One kilo of fragrance oil at an 8% working load pours 50 illustrative 250 g pillars or 125 decorative pieces of 100 g, and commits you to 11.5 kg of wax. For some oils it is genuinely cheaper per gram. For most it is not. This page tells you which, and when the kilo is still worth it.
50
illustrative 250 g pillars from 1 kg of oil at 8% · 125 decorative pieces of 100 g · 11.5 kg of wax either way · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How many pillar candles does 1 kg of fragrance oil make? At an 8% working load, 50 illustrative 250 g pillars or 31.25 of 400 g. For decorative pieces, 208.33 of 60 g, 125 of 100 g or 83.33 of 150 g. Weigh your moulds, as fill weights are not published.

Is 1 kg cheaper per gram? For 24 of 91 oils, by 5% or more; for example Mango Coconut is 20.7% cheaper per gram at 1 kg. For 52 oils it is within 1% of the 100 g, such as Apple Cinnamon and Sandalwood. Which oils save lists pillar-friendly examples.

How much wax goes with 1 kg of oil? At 8%, 11.5 kg (1 kg ÷ 0.08 − 1 kg). In Soy Pillar Wax that is ₹6,900.00, bought as 10 kg + 1 kg + 500 g. Order them together.

Which 1 kg packs are out of stock? On 24 September 2026, 13 oils that were otherwise in stock had no 1 kg available, including Vetiver and Sacred Sandal Ember. Check stock first lists them.
The short answer
Yield: 1 kg at 8% → 50 × 250 g pillars · 31.25 × 400 g · 208.33 × 60 g · 125 × 100 g · 83.33 × 150 g (illustrative weights).
Savings: Pillar-friendly kilo breaks: Mango Coconut 20.7% · Lemongrass and Lime 11.9% · British Rose 10.3% · Fallen Leaves and Cinnamon 10.0% · Fresh Strawberries 6.3%. Flat: Sandalwood, Apple Cinnamon, White Royal Oud.
Rule: Buy the kilo when you will pour it within your planning horizon. At 20 pillars and 40 pieces a month (720 g), a kilo lasts 1.39 months.
One kilo of oil at 8% — what it pours, by product (illustrative weights) 250 g pillars 50 400 g pillars 31.25 60 g pieces 208.33 100 g pieces 125 150 g pieces 83.33 Each kilo also needs 11.5 kg of wax at 8%, whatever you pour it into. Weights are illustrative — CSI does not publish mould volumes or cavity weights. Weigh your own.
Pieces per kilo = 1,000 g ÷ (piece weight × 0.08). The weights are illustrative, and 8% is a working load, not a ceiling. CSI publishes neither mould volumes nor a pillar-wax maximum. Replace the weight with your mould's weighed wax fill.
Straight answer
Should I buy 1 kg fragrance oil for pillar and mould candle making?
Buy the kilo when two things are true: you will pour it within your planning horizon, and you know the scent works in your pillar wax. One kilo at an 8% working load pours 50 illustrative 250 g pillars, 31.25 of 400 g, or 125 decorative pieces of 100 g, and it needs 11.5 kg of wax to go with it. On price, the kilo is a real saving only for some oils. Of 91 oils that list both sizes, 24 are 5% or more cheaper per gram at 1 kg, including pillar-friendly Mango Coconut (20.7%), Lemongrass and Lime (11.9%) and British Rose (10.3%). For 52 oils, such as Apple Cinnamon and Sandalwood, the kilo costs the same per gram as ten 100 g bottles. For those it buys fewer reorders and stock security, not a lower rate. Check stock before you plan, because some oils have no 1 kg available. Beyond one kilo, ask on WhatsApp for a quote; no discount figure is published.
One line: a kilo is 50 pillars and 11.5 kg of wax; buy it for a proven scent, and for the price only where the oil has a real break.
A kilo with a real saving: Mango Coconut 1 kg at ₹3,964.00 (₹3.96/g against ₹5.00 at 100 g). It pours 50 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%, at ₹79.28 of oil each. Its 500 g (₹1,982.00) carries the same rate if a kilo is more than you need.

What one kilo pours

Before "is the kilo cheaper?", ask "how many months of my production is a kilo?"

The table converts one kilo of oil into finished products at an 8% working load, and adds the wax and wicks each one commits you to. The pillar and decorative weights are illustrative, because CSI publishes no mould volumes or cavity weights. Weigh a wax fill of your own moulds and replace them. The 8% is a working point from your own tests, not a ceiling. No pillar-wax ceiling is published, and nothing in this series goes above 13%.

Per 1 kg of oil at 8% · wax at Soy Pillar Wax ₹0.60 / g · one braided wick per piece at ₹12.00
One kilo of oil, five products
Product Oil each Pieces per kg Wax needed Wax cost Wicks at ₹12.00
250 g pillar (illustrative) 20.0 g 50.00 11.50 kg ₹6,900.00 ₹600.00
400 g pillar (illustrative) 32.0 g 31.25 11.50 kg ₹6,900.00 ₹375.00
60 g decorative piece (illustrative) 4.8 g 208.33 11.50 kg ₹6,900.00 ₹2,500.00
100 g decorative piece (illustrative) 8.0 g 125.00 11.50 kg ₹6,900.00 ₹1,500.00
150 g decorative piece (illustrative) 12.0 g 83.33 11.50 kg ₹6,900.00 ₹1,000.00

Whatever you pour, a kilo of oil at 8% needs 11.5 kg of wax. The pieces change, the ratio does not. That is the first thing to plan: a kilo of oil is not a kilo purchase, it is a 12.5 kg production commitment. In Soy Pillar Wax the wax costs ₹6,900.00, more than the oil for most mid-priced scents. Wicks scale with the piece count, and the 60 g decorative line needs four times as many as the 250 g pillars for the same oil. If your decorative pieces are sold unwicked, drop that column.

Now put it against your sales. An illustrative maker selling 20 pillars of 250 g and 40 decorative pieces of 100 g a month uses 400 g + 320 g = 720 g of oil a month across all scents. If that is one scent, a kilo lasts 1.39 months. If it is spread over four scents, each kilo lasts over five months. Five months of a single scent on a shelf is a long commitment for a seasonal oil and a reasonable one for a year-round best-seller. CSI does not publish a shelf life for its oils in this data, so store them tightly closed, cool and dark, and plan to use a kilo within a period you are comfortable with.

Work out months per kilo for each scent
Grams per month for one scent = pieces × weighed fill × load. Months per kilo = 1,000 ÷ that. Do it for every scent before you buy kilos. It will usually tell you that one or two scents deserve a kilo and the rest belong in 100 g or 500 g.

Which pillar and mould oils save at 1 kg

Ten 100 g bottles or one kilo: for most oils, the answer is the same number of rupees.

The table sets fifteen oils that suit pillars and decorative pieces against the same test: what ten 100 g bottles cost compared with one kilo. The saving column is per gram, and the rupee column is the cash difference for the same 1,000 g. Across the whole catalogue, 52 of 91 oils are within 1%, and 24 save 5% or more.

Wild Berries ₹599.00 ₹5,999.00 -0.2% -₹9.00 Kilo fractionally dearer

The top of the table is where the kilo earns its place on price. Citronella is an outlier at 62.3%, useful for outdoor garden pillars. Honeydew Melon and Mango Coconut save a fifth. For these, a proven scent should be bought by the kilo, or by the 500 g where that already carries the kilo rate, as it does for Mango Coconut and Honeydew Melon. The bottom of the table is where the kilo is a convenience. Sandalwood, Apple Cinnamon and White Royal Oud cost the same per gram at both sizes, and Wild Berries costs fractionally more at the kilo.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the 1 kg pack, and it would be convenient to tell every pillar maker it is the professional buy. For more than half our oils it costs the same per gram as ten 100 g bottles. With a flat-priced oil, the 100 g lets you stop at 300 g if the scent does not sell, and keep the rest of the money. Buy the kilo of a flat oil only when you are sure you will use it, or when running out mid-season would cost more than the stock.

When to buy the kilo anyway

Price is only one reason to buy a kilo. For a pillar and mould maker there are four others, and any one of them can justify the kilo of a flat-priced oil.

1
It is a proven, year-round sellerIf you pour a scent every month and it sells every month, fewer reorders is worth something even at the same per-gram price.
2
A festive run depends on itDiwali is on 8 November 2026. If a festive pillar line needs a particular scent, holding the whole run's oil protects you from a late stockout. Restocks on popular sizes cannot be guaranteed close to the festival.
3
Batch consistency mattersIn general practice, makers prefer a run's oil from one purchase so the scent is consistent across the batch. Ask on WhatsApp if you need a specific quantity from one lot.
4
Handling and freightOne kilo is one bottle to receive, store and weigh from, rather than ten. For a small workshop that is a real saving of time.
5
But not when it is untested in your waxA kilo of an oil that sweats in your pillar wax, or drags in your moulds, is a kilo you cannot use for pillars. Pass it through How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Pillar Candles? and Strong Fragrance Oils for Scented Mould Candles first.
The CSI principle
The kilo is a production decision that sometimes saves money, not a money decision that sometimes suits production.
Decide by months of use, festive exposure and test results. Then check the price table. If the oil has a real break, that is a bonus on a decision you would have made anyway.

Check stock before you plan a kilo

On the pull date, 73 oils had a 1 kg in stock. Some oils that were otherwise in stock had no 1 kg available. If your pillar line depends on one of them, plan with 500 g or 100 g packs, or ask on WhatsApp for a restock date. Never plan a production run around a size you cannot buy.

Wild Berry ₹6,287.00 · Out of stock 50 g, 100 g
Spicy Raspberry (second listing) ₹5,850.00 · Out of stock 50 g

Two of these matter most to pillar makers. Vetiver (an earthy, woody profile) has its 500 g at ₹2,900.00 in stock but not its 1 kg. Sacred Sandal Ember had only its 500 g (₹3,999.00) in stock. Seven oils in the collection had no size in stock at all, including Rajnigandha, Mogra and Spiced Rum. Stock changes, so check the product page on the day you order.

The kilo that wasn't there. A maker builds a festive pillar line around an earthy scent, costs it at the 1 kg rate, and takes orders. When she goes to buy, the kilo is out of stock and the 500 g is not enough. The fix is boring but it works. Check the exact size on the product page before you cost a line, keep a second-choice scent tested and ready, and ask on WhatsApp for a restock date before you promise delivery.

A kilo order, priced

Here is one kilo of Mango Coconut turned into a complete order for 50 illustrative 250 g pillars at 8%. The wax is 11.5 kg, bought as 10 kg + 1 kg + 500 g of Soy Pillar Wax. There are 50 braided wicks, a Ribbed Pillar Mould in 5 × 15 cm and sealer. Weigh the ribbed mould's wax fill before you pour. Its dimensions are published but its fill weight is not, and your pillars may not weigh 250 g.

The consumables (oil, wax and wicks) come to ₹11,464.00, or ₹229.28 per pillar, before dye, labour, packaging, freight and GST. Bought as ten 100 g bottles, the same oil would have cost ₹5,000.00, which is ₹1,036.00 more, or ₹20.72 more per pillar. That is what a real kilo break looks like. With a flat oil like Apple Cinnamon, the same comparison gives a difference of ₹0.00.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page is about a pack we sell, and it says plainly that for most of our oils the kilo costs the same per gram as ten 100 g bottles. It names the oils where the kilo saves money and those where it does not, and lists the kilos that were out of stock.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Mould and sealer prices come from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull, and wick prices from Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026, rechecked on 25 September. Yields, savings and totals are plain arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

Pillar and piece weights and the 8% load are illustrative; mould volumes and a pillar-wax ceiling are not published. Months-per-kilo uses an illustrative sales mix.
