Committing to one wax at 5 kg: plan 25 candles, not 27
On paper, 5 kg makes 27 candles of 200 g: 27 × 184 g is 4,968 g, which leaves 32 g in the bag. Real pouring loses more than that to pot residue, a spilt jar and the odd test pour. Use this run to set your own standard
This is the first time you pour enough candles from one bag to notice drift. Keep a notebook: the temperature you melt to, the temperature you add fragrance at, the pour temperature, the room conditions and how many candles each melt produced. Hold two candles from this bag back, unsold, as your reference. When the next bag arrives, pour a few from it and compare against those two before you make a full batch.
Problem: the last kilogram behaves differently from the first. Often the cause is the opened bag rather than the wax. A 5 kg bag opened during the monsoon and folded shut sits in humid air for weeks. Decant what you are not using into an airtight tub, keep it off the floor and out of sunlight. CSI 464 states a 60-month shelf life under cool, dry storage, and the storage is the part you control.
