CSI Wick Buying · Reference-First Testing
One oil gets the full ladder so the rest do not have to. Every other fragrance gets two rungs and an approval candle: far fewer candles, and a known, priced risk for the oils that turn out to be outliers.

Quick answers — read this first
Can one reference fragrance narrow the wick range for the rest? Yes, as a purchasing shortcut with a known risk. The reference gets the full three-rung ladder (9 wicks: Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided × 3); every other oil gets only the two rungs nearest the reference's result, two candles each (4 wicks), plus one approval candle on whichever wins.

How many wicks is that? For 1 + 5 oils: 29 screen wicks, 34 with approval candles, against 54 for full ladders. For 1 + 10: 49, 59 with approval candles, against 99. Worked example: your 7 cm inside jar, 150 g at 8%, Lavender as the reference, landing on C1.

What does it save? In the worked example, ₹3,123.24 for 1 + 5 and ₹6,460.88 for 1 + 10, excluding jars, plus 20 and 40 of your jars. The wick packs are a small part of it (₹120.00 and ₹454.40): the saving is candles.

What is the risk? An extra oil whose wick lies outside its two rungs is caught only when both fail the same way, and costs a rescue round. Approvals rest on a one-sided bracket. For a light, similar range that is usually a good trade (judgement); for heavy outliers, test them wider from the start.
The short answer
Reference: full ladder, 3 rungs × 3 candles = 9 wicks. Lavender 100 g + 15 g (₹645.02) for 108 g.
Each extra oil: 2 rungs × 2 candles = 4 wicks, then 1 approval candle on the winner. 60 g of oil each: 50 g + 15 g.
Packs, 1 + 10: C1 two 20s or one 50 (30 wicks), C2 20 + 10 (26), Cotton Braided 10 (3, plus rescue spares): ₹639.20. Full ladders would need ₹1,093.60.
Approve: every oil, three candles on one wick, full life. Production per wick SKU by candles × wicks × (1 + allowance).
One full ladder, then two rungs each: where the candles go Worked example: your 7 cm (inside) jar, 150 g at 8%, Chunks. Lavender is the reference and lands on C1. Which rung each extra oil wins is an illustration, not a prediction. Each dot = one candle = one wick. Filled = screen candle · ringed = approval candle on the winning rung. Full ladders: 99 candles Reference-first: 59 candles C1 C2 Cotton B. C1 C2 Cotton B. Lavender (reference) extra oil 1 extra oil 2 extra oil 3 extra oil 4 extra oil 5 extra oil 6 extra oil 7 extra oil 8 extra oil 9 extra oil 10 33 33 33 30 26 3 wicks per rung wick packs ₹1,093.60 ₹639.20 all materials, excl. jars ₹16,372.36 ₹9,911.48 Reference-first saves 40 candles and ₹6,460.88 here, of which the wick packs are only ₹454.40. The risk: an extra oil whose wick lies outside its two rungs costs a rescue round. Oil priced at Lavender's 50 g per gram as a stand-in; wax at the 1 kg price.
Every dot on the left is a candle you would pour, a jar you would fill and a wick you would buy under full ladders. On the right, the reference row keeps its full ladder and every other row loses its Cotton Braided cell and one candle per rung. The empty column on the right is the risk: no extra oil is tested on Cotton Braided unless it fails low on both C1 and C2.
Straight answer
Can I first identify a likely wick range using one reference fragrance and then test only nearby sizes for every additional fragrance?
Yes, and for a range of similar oils it is usually the cheapest honest way to wick-test, as long as you know what you are giving up. Give the reference oil (worked example: Lavender in your 7 cm inside jar, 150 g at 8%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) a full ladder: three candles each on Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided, 9 wicks. Suppose it lands on C1. Every other oil then gets only C1 and C2, two candles each (4 wicks), plus a third candle on whichever wins, so it can be approved on three candles through the full life. For 1 + 10 oils that is 59 candles instead of 99, packs of ₹639.20 instead of ₹1,093.60, and ₹6,460.88 saved in the worked example before counting the 40 jars you do not fill. The risk: an oil whose right wick is Cotton Braided shows up only when it fails low on both C1 and C2, and then needs a rescue round; and every approval stands on a bracket closed from one side. Choose the reference carefully, flag likely outliers before you start, and approve every oil on its own full life.
One line: nine wicks to find the range, four wicks per oil to place each one in it; the saving is candles, the cost is a one-sided bracket.
Step 1, the reference order: Eco C1 20 (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock), Eco C2 10 (₹94.40), Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00) and Lavender 100 g + 15 g (₹645.02): ₹977.42, wax from stock. All in stock on 1 October 2026. The extra oils' order waits for the reference result.
Lavender 100 g — ₹540.00

Step 1: the reference ladder

One oil gets the full ladder, so every other oil does not have to.

The reference ladder is an ordinary three-rung bracket: C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, three candles each, nine candles from one pot. Your 7 cm inside jar has 38.48 cm² of pool; that is not a CSI jar (CSI's 7 cm glass listings state an outer figure, about 6.3 cm inside on our 0.35 cm wall assumption), so measure your own at two heights. The 150 g fill at 8% is 12 g of oil + 138 g of wax, load as a share of total candle weight.

Keep one reference candle back
Pour a tenth Lavender candle on the winning rung and keep it unburned and labelled. When an extra oil behaves strangely months later, burning the retained reference beside it tells you whether the jar batch, the wax or the oil changed. It costs one jar and 12 g of oil; the 100 g + 15 g leaves only 7 g, so add a second 15 g (₹105.02) to the reference order.

Burn the nine in sessions of about 2.8 hours (a very rough hour per 2.5 cm of width), still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, and take the reference through its full life before you trust it: the reference result is the foundation every other oil stands on. A bracket closes when the chosen wick has a documented fail on each side; how that rule works is the 7 cm adjacent-sizes post.

Honest limit at the bottom of the range: in the worked example Lavender passes on C1 and runs hot on C2. That closes the bracket from above only: CSI sells no sized, tabbed wick below C1, and the only thing under it is the untabbed Eco Candle Wicks Loose, whose page says "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters". For a reference that is acceptable (C1 passed the full life). For a lighter extra oil that runs hot on C1, there is no tabbed step down: ask us, and look at the load before the wick (the fast-deep-pool post).

If your reference lands on C2 instead, nothing about the method changes except the rungs: light oils then test on C1 and C2, heavy ones on C2 and Cotton Braided. Which oil to use as the reference, and whether a heavy one sets better inventory bounds, is the heaviest-reference post; this page assumes you have chosen.

Step 2: two rungs for every other oil

Four candles per oil: two on the reference's wick, two on its nearest neighbour.

With Lavender on C1, the "nearby sizes" for every extra oil are C1 and C2: the reference's wick and the next rung up, because most oils in a range are at least as demanding as a light herbal (judgement). Two candles each on C1 and C2, screened at burn 3; then a third candle on whichever led, so the oil can be approved on three candles through the full life. Each extra oil uses 48 g for the screen and 60 g with its approval candle: a 50 g bottle leaves only 2 g after the screen, so buy 50 g + 15 g (₹375.02 at Lavender's prices as a stand-in), which leaves 5 g.

Wait for the reference screenOrder the extras' oil and the second wick packs only after the reference's burn-3 screen shows where Lavender lands. Ordering them with step 1 is guessing which two rungs they need.
2
Flag the likely outliers on paperBefore buying, mark any extra oil whose page notes are dense gourmand, vanilla-rich, oud or coffee, or that states vanillin. Give those C2 + Cotton Braided instead of C1 + C2; the counts stay at four.
3
One pot per oil, one sessionEach oil mixed once in its own small pot (552 g of wax + 48 g of oil), poured into its four jars the same day, from the same wax bag.

5
Screen at burn 3 against the reference's standardPool to the edge, calm flame, carbon, pool depth past about 1 cm: the same criteria and session length you used on Lavender, so the comparison means something.
6
Pour the approval candle on the leaderFrom the 15 g top-up, one more candle on whichever rung led, then burn all three of that rung to the bottom.

Approve an oil only when three candles on one wick reach about 1 cm left with no heat, soot or flame trouble in the final third, judged by eye and never by touch. How far down a test must go to count is the acceptance-depth post.

Counts and packs: 1 + 5 and 1 + 10

The wicks barely change the bill. The candles change it a lot.

Worked example winners: for 1 + 5, four extras win on C1 and one on C2; for 1 + 10, seven on C1 and three on C2. Packs are the smallest in-stock combination that covers each count. Oil is priced at Lavender's bottles as a stand-in for every oil (your oils' prices differ); wax at the Chunks 1 kg price; your jars excluded.

Saved ₹3,123.24 and 20 jars ₹6,460.88 and 40 jars

Look at where the saving comes from. For 1 + 10, the wick packs account for ₹454.40 of the ₹6,460.88, 7.0% of it; the rest is oil and wax you never pour, plus 40 of your jars. That is why reference-first is worth its risk at all: not because wicks are expensive (they are flat per wick and cheap), but because every unnecessary rung costs a whole candle.

C1 50-pack or two 20-packs?

For 1 + 10, C1 is the busiest rung: 30 wicks (23 for the screen and 7 approval candles). Two 20-packs (₹236.00) cover it with 10 spare; one 50-pack (₹295.00) covers it with 20 spare, ₹59.00 more cash at exactly the same ₹5.90 a wick. The only reason to choose the 50 is that, with Lavender and seven extras approved on C1, those 20 wicks are production stock you will burn next month. That is a cash-timing choice, not a saving; with the 50-pack the 1 + 10 wick order is ₹698.20.

Don't buy production wick packs alongside the test: not the C1 100 (₹590.00), not the C2 50 (₹472.00). Per wick they cost the same as the small packs, and until each oil passes its own full life you do not know how many of your oils will sit on C1. Argued against our own interest: the wick order for the whole 1 + 10 test is ₹639.20; your production order comes later, from the formula below.

The risk you are buying

Reference-first trades certainty for candles. Know which certainty.

Three things are given up, and one of them costs real money when it happens.

What reference-first gives up · and what to do about it
Our judgement, labelled · worked-example costs at Lavender stand-in prices
Risk When it bites Cost when it happens Mitigation
Outlier above the two rungs A heavy oil rings on both C1 and C2 A rescue round: wax and wicks for 3 Cotton Braided candles (₹283.99) + another 50 g of that oil (₹270.00) + one more cure-and-screen cycle of time Flag likely outliers (vanilla, oud, coffee, dense gourmands) before you start and give them C2 + Cotton Braided instead
Outlier below C1 A light oil runs hot on C1 No tabbed wick exists below C1 Check centring and load; ask about the untabbed loose wick
One-sided bracket An oil passes on C1 with no fail below it, or on C2 with C1 failing and nothing tested above Nothing up front; less margin for batch-to-batch variation For best-sellers, add one candle on the untested side later
Unrepresentative reference The reference is lighter or heavier than most of the range Many extras fail the same way and need rescues Pick the reference deliberately (see 5536)

In numbers: if two of ten extras turn out to be outliers above C2, the rescues cost about ₹1,107.97 in the worked example, and the 1 + 10 saving is still ₹5,352.91 after them. The time cost does not show in rupees: each rescue adds a cure and a screen. A cheaper way to catch likely outliers before pouring anything is a paper pre-screen of each oil's stated family, notes, vanillin and load range: the twelve-fragrance pre-screen post. Grouping oils by burn behaviour as a house standard is the behaviour-groups post. And if you would rather screen everything on one house wick and buy neighbours only for failures, that is the staged ten-fragrance schedule: a different trade, with no reference ladder.

Mistake: using the reference's wick for every extra oil without testing them at all. Why it fails: the reference finds the jar's range, not each oil's place in it; heavier oils commonly need more wick than a light herbal in the same jar. Fix: the four-candle, two-rung screen is the minimum, and every oil still earns its own three-candle, full-life approval.

From approvals to production quantity

Eleven oils, two wick SKUs in the worked example, and one of them does most of the work.

After every oil is approved, size production per wick SKU: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance. Worked example: 30 candles of each oil a month; Lavender and seven extras on C1, three extras on C2.

The lead time is yours: CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times or stock depth, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before a big run. Whether a third SKU for one odd oil is ever worth carrying is the extra-SKU post; per-SKU reorder points at higher volume are the 500-candles-a-month post.

Lavender Fragrance Oil
The worked example's reference: a light, common oil most ranges carry, which is why it makes a sensible place to find the jar's range (which oil should be the reference is its own question). The page describes "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base" and states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"; the text we captured says nothing about wicks. Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026; the 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram. The nine-candle ladder needs 108 g: the 100 g + 15 g (₹645.02) covers it with 7 g to spare.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
In the worked example Lavender lands on C1, so C1 and C2 become every extra oil's two rungs. The page describes wicks of "natural fibers like cotton and paper" that "pair perfectly with soy wax" and states no length, width or jar range in the text we captured. Per wick the price is flat at every pack: the C1 50-pack is ₹5.90 a wick, exactly the 20-pack's ₹5.90. Stock on 1 October 2026: the C1 10-pack is out of stock. Argued against our own interest: for 1 + 10, two C1 20-packs (₹236.00) cover the 30 wicks for ₹59.00 less than the 50-pack; buy the 50 only because C1 is about to become a production wick, not to save money.

wick · the reference ladder's top rung
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
Only the reference ladder uses it in the worked example: three candles to close Lavender's bracket from above, if C2 has not already done so. Its page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", so in a 7 cm jar it is expected to run hot; that is its job in this ladder. The 7 spare wicks are your rescue stock for any heavy extra oil that fails low on both C1 and C2. Flat at ₹12.00 a wick in every pack.

wax · the container soy the worked example uses
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
The worked example's wax. The page claims "up to 13% fragrance load capacity"; Lavender states 6–10% for candles, so the lower figure, 10%, is the ceiling that governs and 8% of total weight (8.70% of wax weight) is inside it. Per gram the bags run from ₹0.60 at 500 g to ₹0.60 at 10 kg: no saving for buying big. If your extra oils will be poured in a different wax, the reference ladder must be too: a reference only transfers within one wax.

1 + 10 reference-first: 8,142 g of wax across 59 candles. Buy 1 kg — ₹599.00

Skip for this method: Cotton Braided packs beyond the reference's 10 (the extras never test on it unless they fail low on both rungs); Performance Wooden Wicks (one listing with no widths, so it cannot be a rung in a bracket); 100 g bottles of every extra oil (50 g + 15 g covers five candles); and the 5 kg or 10 kg of wax (no cheaper per gram).

The CSI principle
Spend a full ladder once, then spend two rungs per oil, and approve every oil on its own.
The reference finds the jar's range; each extra oil's four candles place it in that range; three candles through the full life approve it. The saving is candles, not wicks.
"One ladder tells you where the wicks are. It does not tell you where every fragrance sits."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oil, wicks and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that two C1 20-packs cost less than our 50-pack for the same test, that the wick packs are the smallest part of the saving, that we sell no tabbed wick below C1, and that bigger packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, oil and wax wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The reference result (Lavender on C1), the winners of each extra oil, the Lavender stand-in prices, the 7 cm jar, the 150 g fill, the approval thresholds, the rescue costs, the 5% allowance, the 30-candle month and the 10-day lead time are our judgement or worked examples; session times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Can I use one fragrance to find the right wick size for all my candles?
You can use one fragrance to find the jar's likely range, not every oil's wick. Give the reference a full three-rung ladder, then test each other oil on the two rungs nearest the result, two candles each, and approve each on three candles through the full life.
How many wicks do I need to test 11 fragrances?
Reference-first: 9 for the reference, 4 per other oil for the screen and 1 approval candle each, so 59 for 1 + 10, against 99 for full ladders. With CSI packs that is C1 two 20s (or a 50), C2 20 + 10 and one Cotton Braided 10.
Is lavender a good reference fragrance for wick testing?
It is a common, light choice, which makes it a reasonable reference for a range of similar oils. If your range is mostly heavy gourmands or ouds, a lighter reference may place many of them outside its two nearby rungs; which oil to use as the reference is a separate decision.
What happens if a fragrance fails both wick sizes I tested?
It is an outlier and needs a rescue round on the next rung in the direction it failed: Cotton Braided if it rang or carboned on both C1 and C2. The reference's spare Cotton Braided wicks usually cover it; you will need more of that oil and another cure-and-screen cycle.
Is it cheaper to test fewer wick sizes per fragrance?
Yes, mainly in candles rather than wicks. In the worked example for 1 + 10 oils, reference-first saves ₹6,460.88 excluding jars, and the wick packs are only ₹454.40 of that.
Should I buy the C1 50-pack for wick testing?
Only if the extra wicks will become production stock. CSI's C1 costs ₹5.90 a wick in every pack, so the 50-pack saves nothing per wick; for 30 test wicks, two 20-packs cost ₹59.00 less.
Reference-first wick testing
Nine wicks for the reference, four per oil after it: 59 candles for 1 + 10, not 99.
Run the reference ladder to full life, give every other oil two rungs and an approval candle, rescue the outliers, and size production per wick SKU. Send us your oil list and we will count the packs with you.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on how fragrance changes wick behaviour (5521–5540): wick counts for reference-first testing (a full ladder for one reference oil, two rungs × two candles for every other oil, plus approval candles), totals and packs for 1 + 5 and 1 + 10 oils against full ladders, the money saved and the risk taken, and the step to production quantity and reorder point.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Lavender Fragrance Oil, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the wick-purchase advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Priyanka Purohit, Akansha, Anonymous, Monika Deep, Sakshi Jain. The reviews from Ashwini are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 7.0 cm inside diameter (38.48 cm² of pool) and the 150 g fill are labelled assumptions for the reader's own jar; CSI's 7 cm listings state outer figures. Ceilings are as the pages state (Lavender 6–10% for candles; Chunks up to 13%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Oil costs for "an extra oil" use Lavender's bottle prices as a stand-in. The reference result, the extra oils' winners, the approval thresholds, the rescue costs, the 5% allowance, the 30-candle month and the 10-day lead time are editorial judgement and worked examples. Session length is a commonly cited rule of thumb. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
