CSI Wick Buying · Ten Fragrances, One Jar
Don't assume one wick, and don't buy for every wick either. Screen all ten oils on a house wick, buy the next rung only for the oils that fail, and approve each oil on its own three candles.
₹6,108.22
wave 1 for ten oils in CSI's 150 g jar: C2 20, 20 jars, 3 kg wax, 50 g of each oil · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I wick-test ten fragrances without assuming one wick works for all? In three waves, and buy for one wave at a time. Wave 1: every oil gets two candles on your house wick (worked example: Eco C2 in CSI's 150 g Clear Glass Jar), 20 candles from one C2 20-pack (₹188.80). Wave 2: only the oils that failed, two candles each on the rung in the direction they failed. Wave 3: a third candle per oil on its leading wick, then full life.

What does each wave cost? In the worked example, ₹6,108.22 for wave 1 (wicks, 50 g of each oil, 20 jars, 3 kg wax), ₹2,663.10 for wave 2 and ₹1,545.80 for wave 3: ₹10,317.12 in all for 40 candles. Pouring both neighbour rungs for every oil on day one would cost ₹16,915.52.

What is the one rule? Don't buy wave-2 wicks, jars or oil before wave-1 results. The wave-2 wick packs are cheap (₹238.00); the candles you would pour around them are not.

When do I buy production quantities? Per oil, only after its three candles on one wick pass the full life. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick in every pack, so production packs are sized by the formula, not by a discount.
The short answer
Wave 1: 10 oils × 2 candles on the house wick = 20 wicks (C2 20-pack ₹188.80), 24 g of each oil, from one 50 g bottle each (₹2,509.22 for ten).
Wave 2: only failed directions: two candles per failed oil on the next rung up or down. Worked example: 3 low, 2 hot = Cotton Braided 10 + C1 20 (₹238.00) and 15 g top-ups.
Wave 3: one more candle per oil on its leading wick, so every oil has three on one wick; burn all to about 1 cm left. Only then buy production wicks for that oil.
The rule: no wave-2 purchase before wave-1 results. Staged, the worked example spends ₹10,317.12; front-loaded, ₹16,915.52.
Ten oils, three orders: spend follows the results Worked example: 150 g Clear Glass Jar, 8%, CSI 464, house wick Eco C2. Cumulative cash incl. jars, oils, wax and wicks. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Screen results are an illustration, not a prediction: 5 pass on C2, 3 ring low, 2 run hot. 0 3,000 6,000 9,000 12,000 15,000 18,000 rupees Front-loaded, all on day one: ₹16,915.52 (70 candles) ₹6,108.22 ₹8,771.32 ₹10,317.12 ₹6,598.40 not spent Order 1 before any pour Order 2 after wave-1 screen Order 3 after wave-2 screen Wave 1 20 candles C2 20 · 10 × 50 g 20 jars · 3 kg wax Wave 2 10 candles, fails only CB 10 · C1 20 5 × 15 g · 10 jars 2 kg wax Wave 3 10 candles: 3rd candle per oil C2 10 · 10 jars 1 kg wax · no oil Front-loaded = every oil also poured on C1 and Cotton Braided (2 each) at the start, 100 g bottles, 70 jars, 10 kg wax. Each step is an order placed only after the previous wave's candles have been read. The dashed line is what buying "everything the test might need" on day one would cost. The gap is mostly jars, wax and oil for candles nobody needed: the wicks are a small part of either line.
Straight answer
My candle collection has ten fragrances in one jar. How can I efficiently wick-test all ten without assuming one wick works universally?
Test in three waves and let each wave's results release the next purchase. Wave 1: pour two candles of every oil on one house wick (worked example: Eco C2 in CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), 150 g at 8% in CSI 464): 20 candles, one C2 20-pack, 24 g of each oil from a 50 g bottle. Screen at burn 3. Wave 2: only for the oils that failed, two candles on the rung in the direction they failed: Cotton Braided for a ring or heavy carbon, C1 for a fast, deep pool. Wave 3: one more candle per oil on its leading wick, so each oil has three on one wick, and burn all to about 1 cm left. In the worked example the three orders cost ₹6,108.22, ₹2,663.10 and ₹1,545.80, ₹10,317.12 for 40 candles, against ₹16,915.52 for pouring every neighbour rung on day one. The rule that makes it work: don't buy wave-2 wicks, jars or oil before wave-1 results.
One line: buy one wave at a time; the candles you don't pour are the saving, not the wicks.
Wave 1, the only order to place today: Eco C2 20-pack (₹188.80), Clear Glass Jar pack of 20 (₹1,888.00), three 1 kg bags of CSI 464 (₹1,522.20) and 50 g of each oil (₹2,509.22 for the worked example's ten): ₹6,108.22. All in stock on 1 October 2026.
Eco C2 20 — ₹188.80

Wave 1: every oil on the house wick

Twenty candles answer one question per oil: is the house wick close?

The house wick is the one you expect to suit most of the range: in this worked example, C2 in the 150 g Clear Glass Jar. That choice is a starting point, not a claim about the jar; if your first lavender or rose already passed on C1, C1 is your house wick and the directions flip. Two candles per oil is a screen, not an approval: enough to see which way an oil leans, not enough to sign it off.

150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax · smallest in-stock pack per line · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026

Ten oils 24 g each 50 g each ₹2,509.22 see the oil table below
Wave 1 total 20 candles ₹6,108.22 —

Per candle, the jar and wax alone are ₹164.42; a Jasmine screening candle comes to ₹229.06 with its oil and wick. That is why the screen uses two candles, not three: across ten oils, every extra screening candle is another jar, another 138 g of wax and another 12 g of oil, ten times over. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

1
Measure two jars from the packInside diameter near the top and near the base, and the weight of water to your fill line. The page gives "outer diameter 7cm" and a 6.5 cm base; how to turn outer into inside is external versus internal diameter.
2
Pour in pairs from small potsTen oils means ten small batches of 276 g of wax + 24 g of oil, each mixed once and poured into two jars. Same wax bag, same temperature (80–85°C: the jar's 85°C wording caps CSI 464's 80–90°C), same day.
3
Code the basesOil initials, wick and candle letter (JAS-C2-a). Blind codes on the lids help when someone else sniffs.
4
Cure togetherSeveral of the ten pages state a 48–72 hour cure for soy; many makers wait about a week before judging throw. Same shelf, same days.
5
Screen at burn 3Sessions of about 2.8 hours (a very rough hour per 2.5 cm of width), still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm. Score each candle: pool to the edge by burn 3? flame calm? carbon? pool depth past about 1 cm?
6
Sort into three pilesPass (both candles fine), low (ring, small flame, carbon) and hot (fast, deep pool, tall flame). One candle each way is not a direction: treat a split pair as unresolved: it gets its wave-3 candle on the house wick and is read with extra care.

The design behind this, filling only the neighbouring cell in the direction a candle failed rather than the whole grid, is the adaptive ten-fragrance grid post; how many sizes per fragrance to plan for is the sizes-per-fragrance calculator. This page owns the purchasing schedule that makes that method cheap.

Wave 2: only the directions that failed

Five oils passed? Then five oils buy nothing in wave 2.

The worked example's illustration (your results will differ; CSI has no burn data for any oil): Jasmine, Lavender, British Rose, Gardenia and Bergamot Amber pass on C2; Vanilla Bean, Woody Oud and Roasted Coffee ring or carbon (low); Citrus Lemon and Eucalyptus Spearmint pool fast and deep (hot). That spread is plausible because heavier, vanilla-rich, resinous and coffee oils are commonly linked to needing more wick, and light citrus and herbal oils often burn more easily, but it is an illustration of the schedule, not a forecast.

Wave 2 is ten candles: six on Cotton Braided, four on C1. The order: a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and a C1 20-pack (₹118.00, the 10-pack is out of stock), a jar pack of 10 (₹944.00), two 1 kg bags of wax (₹1,014.80; 240 g is left from wave 1) and a 15 g top-up of each failed oil (₹466.30). Wave 2 total: ₹2,663.10.

Honest limit for this jar: Cotton Braided's own page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm", and this jar is about 7 cm across. For a heavy oil that rings on C2 it is still the only tabbed step up CSI sells, so it belongs in wave 2, but expect some of those candles to run hot. If an oil rings on C2 and runs hot on Cotton Braided, the answer is not another wick: it is a load step (the load-first order), a different oil, or a wider jar for that scent. We would rather say that now than sell you a wick that does not exist.

For the hot side, C1 is the only tabbed step down; below it there is only the untabbed loose 2-inch wick. An oil that runs hot on C1 in this jar is unusual at 8%, and if it happens, check centring and draughts before buying anything.

Wave 3: the third candle and the full life

Two candles find the wick. Three candles burned to the bottom approve it.

Every oil needs three candles on one wick through the full life before it is approved. The two wave-1 candles of a passing oil keep burning; wave 3 adds one more on C2 so it has three. For an oil that failed, its two wave-2 candles on the winning rung keep burning and wave 3 adds a third on that rung. Pour the five passers' third candles as soon as wave 1 is read (they do not depend on wave 2), and the rest when wave 2 is read. Pour them early and the C2 10-pack and one jar pack simply move into order 2; the total does not change.

CSI 464 1,380 g 860 g left 1 kg ₹507.40
Oil 12 g per oil in every bottle already nothing —
Wave 3 total 10 candles ₹1,545.80

Approve an oil when all three of its candles reach about 1 cm left with no heat, soot or flame trouble in the final third; judge how close the flame sits to the glass by eye, never by touch. How far down a test must go is the acceptance-depth post. After wave 3 you hold 5 C2, 1 Cotton Braided, 14 C1 and 480 g of wax: a reserve for re-pours, not a mistake.

A split result in wave 3
If two of three candles pass, the oil is not decided. Re-pour three on the same wick from what is left in its bottle (a passer has 14 g, enough for one candle; buy another 15 g for a full re-pour). Do not average a split into an approval.

Oil grams per oil, matched to real bottles

Buy 50 g of every oil for wave 1. Buy more only for the oils that earn a wave 2.

Each candle takes 12 g. An oil that passes the screen uses 24 g in wave 1 and 12 g in wave 3: 36 g, so its 50 g bottle leaves 14 g. An oil that fails uses 24 g + 24 g + 12 g = 60 g, 10 g more than one 50 g holds; a 15 g top-up, bought with the wave-2 order, covers it and leaves 5 g. After wave 1 every bottle still holds 26 g, which already covers that oil's wave-3 candle.

Bottle choice per oil · 50 g up front vs 100 g up front
Ten oils · in-stock sizes · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Strategy Order 1 Order 2 Total oil cash What it risks
50 g each, 15 g top-ups for failed oils (this page) ₹2,509.22 ₹466.30 ₹2,975.52 A second small order for five oils
100 g of every oil on day one ₹4,592.32 nothing ₹4,592.32 ₹2,083.10 more on day one, mostly for oils that pass and never need it
Don't buy 100 g of all ten "to be safe": it costs ₹2,083.10 more up front, and in the worked example half the oils never use more than 36 g. Argued against our own interest: we sell the 100 g and the 500 g; for a ten-oil screen, the 50 g is the right size for every oil, and the 15 g top-up is the right size for the ones that fail. Buy 500 g of an oil after it is approved, when it is production stock.

Every one of the ten pages states a candle load up to 10% for soy (some as a 6–10% range), and CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 8% sits inside every ceiling. A different load for one oil is a different test; keep the screen at one load.

The rule: no wave-2 purchase before wave-1 results

The wave-2 wicks cost ₹238.00. The candles they invite you to pour cost far more.

It is tempting to buy C1 and Cotton Braided with wave 1 "so they are here". On the wick line alone the damage is small: a C1 20 and a Cotton Braided 10 are ₹238.00, and they will probably be used eventually. The real cost is what having them in the drawer encourages: pouring both neighbours for every oil on day one. That front-loaded route, two candles on C1, C2 and Cotton Braided for all ten plus the third candles, is 70 candles, 70 jars (₹6,608.00), 10 kg of wax (₹5,074.00), 100 g of every oil (₹4,592.32) and the wicks (₹641.20): ₹16,915.52. The staged route is ₹10,317.12 for 40 candles. The difference, ₹6,598.40, is jars, wax and oil for candles whose answer you could have predicted from wave 1.

Staged vs front-loaded · ten oils · worked example
Cash per order, incl. jars · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Route Order 1 Order 2 Order 3 Candles Total
Staged (this page) ₹6,108.22 ₹2,663.10 ₹1,545.80 40 ₹10,317.12
Front-loaded, both neighbours for all ten ₹16,915.52 — — 70 ₹16,915.52

What staging costs you is time: three orders instead of one, and your own order-to-bench time between waves (CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times; confirm on WhatsApp). If that time matters more than the money, order the wave-2 wick packs with wave 1, because they are cheap, but still do not pour or buy jars and oil for wave 2 until wave 1 is read. A fixed reference oil that brackets the range first is a different shortcut with different risks: the reference-first post. Which oil makes the best reference is the heaviest-reference post.

Mistake: approving all ten on C2 because seven looked fine at burn 3. Why it fails: one wick working for most oils is not one wick working for all, and burn 3 hides the final third. Fix: each oil earns its own three-candle, full-life approval, on whichever wick it led on. That is the whole point of not assuming a universal wick.

From ten approvals to production quantities

Ten oils, one jar, and in the worked example three wick SKUs.

After wave 3, each approved oil has a wick. In the worked example that is C2 for five oils, Cotton Braided for three and C1 for two. Production follows the series formula per SKU: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance. Because all three are flat per wick, pack sizes only change your cash outlay.

Production · worked example: 40 candles of each oil a month
Reorder point = daily use × 10-day lead time + 7 days safety stock (both yours, labelled) · flat per-wick pricing
Wick Oils on it Wicks a month Packs Reorder at
Eco C2 5 210 2 × 100 + 10 = ₹1,982.40 119
Cotton Braided 3 126 100 + 3 × 10 = ₹1,560.00 71
Eco C1 2 84 50 + 2 × 20 = ₹531.00 48
All wicks 10 — ₹4,073.40 —

Oil per fragrance at 40 candles is 480 g a month: the 500 g of each, all in stock on 1 October 2026. Whether three wick SKUs for ten oils is worth simplifying, and how to test whether a low-volume oil can share a neighbour's wick, is the sharing-trial post; whether one odd oil deserves its own wick at all is the extra-SKU post. Per-SKU reorder points at higher volumes are the 500-candles-a-month post.

Don't buy a 1,000-pack of C2 because "most of the range" uses it: at 210 a month it is nearly five months of stock at the same ₹9.44 a wick as the 10-pack, and the first new oil or jar batch reopens the question. Buy the month plus safety stock per SKU and reorder on the formula.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items, in wave order, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use 12 g per 150 g candle at 8%.

Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
The jar this schedule is costed in, and a real CSI listing: the page states "150g fill capacity", "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm" and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C". With CSI 464 (pour 80–90°C), the lower figure governs: pour at 80–85°C. No inside diameter is stated; at a 0.35 cm wall (our assumption) it is about 6.3 cm inside, 31.17 cm² of pool. The listing calls it a "curved silhouette" in one place and straight-sided in another, so measure yours at two heights. Flat at ₹94.40 a jar in both packs. Limitation: the 85°C figure is a pour limit, not a burn rating; judge heat in the final third by eye, never by touch.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thick (C2) and Thin (C1)
C2 is the worked example's house wick: every oil gets two candles on it first. The page describes wicks of "natural fibers like cotton and paper" that "pair perfectly with soy wax" and states no length, width or jar range in the text we captured, so C2 being the house wick is our starting point, not a fact about this jar. Flat per wick at every pack. Stock on 1 October 2026: the C1 10-pack is out of stock; every other pack is in. Argued against our own interest: the C2 20-pack covers wave 1 exactly; buy the C1 20 only when a wave-1 candle runs hot.

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The worked example's wax. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". All ten oils state up to 10% for soy, so 8% of total weight (8.70% of wax weight) is inside every ceiling. Price is flat at ₹0.51 a gram from 1 kg to 10 kg, which is exactly why there is no reason to buy the 5 kg or 10 kg before you know how many waves you will need.
Pack Price Per unit Which wave
500 g ₹260.00 ₹0.52 per g top-ups
1 kg ₹507.40 ₹0.51 per g bought by wave: 3, then 2, then 1
5 kg · 10 kg ₹2,537.00 · ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 per g the same per gram: no reason to buy ahead
Wave 1 2,760 g, wave 2 1,380 g, wave 3 1,380 g: six 1 kg bags in all. Buy 1 kg — ₹507.40

Skip for this schedule: 100 g bottles for every oil, the 5 kg or 10 kg of wax (flat per gram, so nothing is saved by buying ahead), Performance Wooden Wicks (one listing, no widths, so no rung to step to), and a Steel Wick Holder (a single wick per jar here; the ₹118.00 Wick Centering Device pack of 5 does the job).

The CSI principle
Buy one wave at a time, and let the candles write the next order.
Wave 1 asks every oil the same question on one wick. Wave 2 buys only the directions that failed. Wave 3 earns each oil its own approval. Production waits for that.
"Ten fragrances do not need thirty wick tests. They need ten honest answers, and you only pay for the questions they raise."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wicks, wax and oils named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to buy 50 g not 100 g of every oil, to hold back two wick packs and two jar packs until results justify them, that Cotton Braided may run hot in this jar, and that bigger packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock, including every size of all ten oils. Jar, wick, wax and oil wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The house wick, the screen results, the 0.35 cm wall, the approval thresholds, the 5% allowance, the 40-candle month, the 10-day lead time and the front-loaded comparison are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool and session times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

How many test candles do I need to wick test ten fragrances?
In a staged schedule, 20 for the screen (two per oil on your house wick), two more per oil that fails in a direction, and one more per oil so each has three on its leading wick. In the worked example that is 40 candles, not the 70 a front-loaded grid would pour.
Can one wick size work for all my candle fragrances?
Sometimes for many, rarely for all. Heavier and vanilla-rich oils commonly need more wick than light florals and citrus in the same jar. Screen every oil on one house wick, then give only the oils that fail their own rung.
How much fragrance oil do I need to wick test one scent?
At 150 g and 8%, each candle takes 12 g. An oil that passes the screen uses 36 g (a 50 g bottle leaves 14 g); one that needs a second rung uses 60 g, so add a 15 g top-up with your second order.
Should I buy all my test wicks at once?
Buy the house wick for the screen and wait for results before buying the others. The wick packs are cheap, but buying them early tempts you into pouring jars, wax and oil for directions no oil needs.
What wick should I use for the CSI 150 g Clear Glass Jar?
No one can name it before you burn it. The jar is about 7 cm across on the outside and states no inside diameter. A screen on Eco C2 with C1 and Cotton Braided as the neighbours is a sensible start; each oil's own three-candle, full-life result decides.
How long does it take to wick test a whole candle collection?
Three cure-and-screen cycles plus full-life burns, and your own order-to-bench time between waves. Many makers cure about a week and screen at burn 3; full-life burns in a 150 g candle run to many sessions. Start early before a season such as Diwali.
Wick-testing ten fragrances in one jar
Wave 1 today (₹6,108.22); the next two orders only when the candles ask for them.
Two candles per oil on your house wick, a screen at burn 3, two more only where an oil fails, a third candle per oil on its leading wick, and full life before any production pack.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on how fragrance changes wick behaviour (5521–5540): a staged purchase schedule for wick-testing ten fragrances in one jar, with what each wave buys and costs, oil grams per oil matched to real bottle sizes, the rule against buying wave-2 materials before wave-1 results, and the step to per-SKU production quantities and reorder points.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The jar page states "150g fill capacity", outer diameter 7 cm, base 6.5 cm and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C"; the 6.3 cm inside diameter (31.17 cm²) uses our 0.35 cm wall assumption. Ceilings are as the pages state (all ten oils up to 10% for soy; CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. The house wick, the screen results, the approval thresholds, the 5% allowance, the 40-candle month, the 10-day lead time and the front-loaded comparison are editorial judgement and worked examples. Session length is a commonly cited rule of thumb. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
