Quick answers — read this first
Can I use a 12% fragrance load? Only if your wax states a load of at least 12% and your oil page states a candle load of at least 12%. On CSI stock that means Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 with Cinnamon Vanilla or Japanese Cherry Blossom. Four combinations.

What about my wax? Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" — so no, not on CSI 464. Eco Soy CSI 400 states no load at all — so no, not there either. A blank is not permission.

12% of what? This matters more than the 12. The Chunks page says "8% to 13% of total wax weight". On that basis 12% is 21.43 g of oil in a 200 g candle. Twelve per cent of the finished candle is 24 g, which works out at 13.64% of wax weight — above every figure CSI publishes.

Is 12% worth it? On Chunks with Cinnamon Vanilla, moving from a 10% finished-candle load to 12% of wax weight adds ₹5.65 a candle, ₹565.11 per 100. Qualify it on six jars before you spend it on five hundred.

Your ceiling is the lower of two published numbers: the wax page's stated fragrance load and the oil page's stated candle load. Never the higher, never an average, never a number from a maker group.

Can I pour a 12% fragrance load in a candle, and how do I know if my materials allow it?
Sometimes — and the test is arithmetic, not opinion. Two published numbers govern you: the fragrance load stated on your wax page and the candle load stated on your fragrance oil's page. Your working ceiling is the lower of the two. On CSI stock, two container waxes state a load that reaches 12%: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ("up to 13% fragrance load capacity", with a recommended range of "8% to 13% of total wax weight" and 10% recommended) and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 ("Fragrance Load Up to 13%"). CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 12% is simply not available on it, and Eco Soy CSI 400 states no load at all, which is a reason to stay conservative rather than a licence. On the oil side, of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages 72 state a candle load and 58 of those cap it at 10%; only three go above 10%, and only two reach 12% — Cinnamon Vanilla and Japanese Cherry Blossom. That is four legitimate combinations. Then the detail that decides the grams: those pages express their figure as a share of total wax weight, so 12% means 21.43 g of oil with 178.57 g of wax in a 200 g candle — not the 24 g you get by taking 12% of the finished candle, which is 13.64% of wax weight and above everything CSI publishes.
One line: 12% is allowed only where the wax page and the oil page both state at least 12% — four CSI combinations — and only as 12% of wax weight, which is 21.43 g in a 200 g candle.

12% of what? The question before the question

Two makers can both pour "12%" and one of them can be using 12% more oil than the other.

There are two conventions in circulation, both legitimate, and they are not interchangeable at the top of a range. The first expresses load as a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, and the two add up to what the customer holds. That is the convention this series and the CSI load-and-throw guide use. The second expresses load as a share of the wax weight: 100 g of wax plus 12 g of oil, which is a 112 g candle. Several CSI pages use this wording explicitly — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says "8% to 13% of total wax weight", and both oils that reach 13% say "Of total wax weight" too.

At 6% or 8% the gap between the conventions is small enough to ignore. At the top of a stated range it is the whole question, because the convention decides whether you are inside the ceiling or over it. Here is the conversion, once, so you never have to derive it at the bench.

Worked out above: a load of L% of wax weight is L ÷ (100 + L) as a share of the finished candle. So 12 ÷ 112 = 10.71%, and a 200 g candle is 200 ÷ 1.12 = 178.57 g of wax with the remaining 21.43 g as oil. Reading it the other way: 12% of a finished candle is 24 g of oil on 176 g of wax, and 24 ÷ 176 = 13.64% of wax weight — higher than the 13% at the top of the Chunks range. The rule that keeps you inside every ceiling
Where a page states a basis, use that basis. Where a page states a percentage with no basis at all — as the CSI 468 page's "Fragrance Load Up to 13%" does — take the stricter reading, which is percentage of wax weight, because it puts less oil in the candle. Write the basis on the recipe card next to the number. A recipe card that says "12%" and nothing else is not a recipe, it is a guess waiting to be repeated wrongly.

What each CSI wax states — and what it forbids

CSI's wax collection holds 15 waxes; four are container waxes with published or partly published specifications, and those are the four that a load question can be answered on. The rest, including the pillar and speciality waxes, publish no fragrance load, which means there is no stated figure to work to. Everything in this table is quoted from the product page.

"My wax doesn't say, so it's probably fine." This is the single most expensive sentence in fragrance load. A stated ceiling is a formulation figure: it describes how much oil that particular wax has been built to hold in solution. When the figure is absent, the honest position is that you do not know where the limit is on that wax — so you find out with two jars and a fortnight, not with a 200-candle batch. On Eco Soy CSI 400 and the pillar waxes, treat 8% as your working reference and move only on evidence you collected yourself.

One point of precision that matters if you are reading this to decide whether you are "allowed" to do something. These are formulation limits published by the wax maker, not regulatory limits. Nobody is going to fine you for pouring 14%. The wax will simply fail to hold the oil, and the candle will be worse than the one you were trying to improve — which is the mechanism set out in what happens if you put too much fragrance oil in a candle. Separately, your fragrance supplier's documentation states use guidance per application; CSI supplies SDS and IFRA documentation on request on WhatsApp, and those documents are about safe use levels, not about throw.

The half nobody reads: the oil's own candle load

Your wax gives you a ceiling. So does your oil. The one that binds is whichever is lower.

Most makers who ask about 12% have checked their wax and stopped there. But a fragrance oil is a formulated blend, and its supplier publishes a recommended rate for candles — sometimes a single maximum, sometimes a range, sometimes separate figures for soy and paraffin. Across CSI's 107 fragrance-oil product pages, 72 state a candle load. The distribution is the useful part.

The wax-melt trap, which accounts for most accidental 12% pours. On the same page that caps candles at 10%, the wax-melt figure is routinely 10–15%, and several pages state "Up to 12% for wax melts" or "Wax Melts Up to 12% Higher load than candles". British Rose is the clean example: "Soy Candles Up to 10% Of total wax weight" sits directly above "Wax Melts Up to 12% Higher load than candles." A maker who scans the page and takes the bigger number has not raised their load — they have applied a melt recommendation to a candle by accident. Melts have no wick and no melt pool; a candle has both.

The other place 12% appears legitimately is reed diffusers, where CSI pages commonly state 10–30% of the diffuser base, and room sprays at 8–15%. Those are different products with different bases. If a percentage on a page looks unusually generous for a candle, read the row label before you read the number.

The four combinations that reach 12%

Notice what these four have in common. Both oils are gourmand or soft-floral directions with real weight in the base — the kind of accord that has something left to give at a high load. Neither is a sharp citrus or a thin fresh accord, and that is not a coincidence: a page only publishes an unusually high candle range when the blend is built to be legible at one. It is also why "can I pour 12%?" is usually the wrong question and "is this oil built for 12%?" is the right one.

The only CSI wax that publishes a full band rather than a single maximum: "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight", with 10% recommended, fragrance added at 80–90°C, a pour at 70–80°C and a stated cure of a minimum 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing. That band is what makes a high-load experiment defensible here: you are moving inside a published range, not past a single number. Its page states "Soy Wax Candles Up to 13% Of total wax weight" and, importantly, tells you where to begin: "Start at 8-10% and increase for a bolder gourmand throw." The page states "Candles 6-13% Of total wax weight. Cure 48-72 hours for soy. Wide range allows full intensity control from airy to rich" — a seven-point band, which is the widest candle range published on any CSI oil page. That width is the point: the same oil is intended to work as a quiet 6% bedroom candle and as a 13% retail candle, so it is a sensible subject for a three-load comparison rather than a single guess. At ₹4,842 a kilo, 21.43 g is ₹103.76 a candle.

What the last two points actually cost

Worked out above: oil cost = grams × ₹4.5548 (Cinnamon Vanilla 1 kg ₹4,554.80 ÷ 1,000); wax cost = grams × ₹0.599 (Chunks 1 kg ₹599 ÷ 1,000). The 10%-of-candle to 12%-of-wax-weight step is +₹5.65 a candle, ₹565.11 per 100 — the oil rises ₹6.50 and the wax falls ₹0.86. The illegitimate jump to 12% of the finished candle would cost ₹15.82 a candle, ₹1,582.32 per 100, and puts oil into the wax that no published figure says it will hold.

That first line is the honest headline of this whole page: the legitimate 12% is a ₹5.65 decision, and the illegitimate one is a ₹15.82 decision. Makers reach for 12% expecting a large change and are usually surprised how small the extra dose actually is — 1.43 g more oil in a 200 g candle than a 10% pour. If a candle is failing at 10%, an extra gram and a half is not what rescues it. What rescues it is on the list two sections down.

Price it against the alternative before you commit
₹565.11 per 100 candles is roughly what a hundred Thin (C1) Eco Candle Wicks cost (₹590), and about one and a half pen thermometers at ₹354. If you have not yet wick-tested at your current load or logged your add temperature, spend the money there first. A wick test changes the pool; two extra points of load change 1.43 g.

If your wax caps at 10%, do this instead

Most makers asking this question are on a wax whose answer is no — CSI 464 states up to 10%, and Eco Soy CSI 400 states nothing. There are three honest routes forward, and none of them involves pouring past a published figure.

Route three is where the evidence actually points, and it is the cheapest of the three. A candle poured at 10% and cured a fortnight, in a jar whose wick opens the pool to the glass, will out-perform the same recipe at a higher load with a four-day cure and an undersized wick. The CSI principle
A ceiling is a description of what the wax can hold, not a dare. The number you are allowed to pour and the number worth pouring are two different questions.
Chunks state a maximum of 13% and recommend 10% on the same page. That is not a contradiction — it is the whole subject of fragrance load, printed twice on one product listing.

How to qualify a high-load recipe on six jars

Being allowed to pour 12% is not the same as knowing it works in your jar. A high-load recipe has more ways to fail than a mid-load one, and all of them show up within three weeks if you are looking. Six jars, two arms, ₹1,425 of materials.

Burn both arms blind on day 21Same room, windows shut, three hours, labels hidden by someone else. Score scent at 30 and 120 minutes on a five-point scale, and record minutes to a full melt pool, flame height, soot and mushrooming. At a high load the burn column is as important as the scent column — a drowning wick is the classic high-load symptom.

Go or no-go, in writingGo only if the high arm shows no separation or sweating at any inspection, burns as cleanly as the control, and beats it on blind scent by more than a point. Anything less and the extra ₹565.11 per hundred candles is buying risk. No-go is a perfectly good result: you have a documented reason to pour 10% and never revisit it.
Do not qualify a high load on one jar. Separation and sweating are partly a function of how a particular jar cooled — position on the bench, draught, how warm the glass was when you poured. One clean jar at 12% proves nothing; three clean jars in three positions is evidence. Is 12% fragrance load too much for soy wax?
It depends entirely on which soy wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state a recommended range of 8% to 13% of total wax weight, so 12% of wax weight sits inside it. CSI 464 states up to 10%, so on that wax 12% is too much. There is no universal "soy takes X%" figure, which is why the number on the bag you actually bought is the only one that counts. Your oil's page has to agree as well.
How much fragrance oil is 12% in a 200 g candle?
On the wax-weight basis that the relevant CSI pages use, 21.43 g of oil with 178.57 g of wax — because 200 ÷ 1.12 = 178.57. If you instead take 12% of the finished candle you get 24 g of oil and 176 g of wax, which is 13.64% of wax weight and above every load figure CSI publishes. The difference is 2.57 g a candle, so decide the basis before you weigh, and write it on the recipe card.
What happens if I go above my wax's stated fragrance load?
The surplus does not dissolve. It migrates while the candle cools and cures, and you get the familiar sequence: visible separation, an oily film sweating to the surface, a wick drawing oil rather than wax, and a melt pool that never opens out — a weaker candle that cost more to make. Ceilings are formulation limits, not regulatory ones, so nothing stops you; the wax simply will not cooperate. Which CSI fragrance oils allow a candle load above 10%?
Three of the 107 pages state a candle range that goes above 10%: Autumn at "Candles 7-11% Of total wax weight", Cinnamon Vanilla at "Soy Wax Candles Up to 13%", and Japanese Cherry Blossom at "Candles 6-13%". Only the last two reach 12%. 58 pages cap candles at 10% and 35 state no candle figure at all. Always read the row label: melt, diffuser and room-spray percentages on the same page are higher and do not apply to candles.
Does a 12% load need a different wick?
Assume yes until a burn test says otherwise. More oil changes what the wick draws and how the pool behaves, so a wick sized at 8% or 10% is an untested wick at 12%. Burn three jars of the high arm alongside three of your current recipe and compare minutes to a full melt pool, flame height, soot and mushrooming. Will a 12% candle smell noticeably stronger than a 10% one?
Often not enough to justify it. On the legitimate reading, 12% of wax weight is 21.43 g against 20 g in a 200 g candle — 1.43 g more oil, and ₹5.65 more per candle on Chunks with Cinnamon Vanilla. Perceived strength is driven far more by cure length, melt-pool area and the oil's note structure than by a gram and a half. Test blind at day 14 before you commit a batch, and read does more fragrance oil make a candle smell stronger first.
