Which fragrance oils cannot be used at 10%? Three CSI pages stop below it: Fresh Strawberries at 6–9%, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco and Mahogany Teakwood at 7–9% in soy. Another 20 pages publish no candle range at all — ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming 10%.
How much does 10% cost compared with 8%? On a 200 g candle the step is 4 g of extra oil: ₹11.33 with Citrus Lemon, ₹12.27 with British Rose, ₹20.88 with Lavender at 1 kg pricing. Across 500 festive candles that is ₹6,136.00 to ₹10,442.00.
How do I know the wax is not holding 10%? Look at the surface at 48 hours and again at day 7: beads or a greasy film, a wet ring where the wax meets the glass, or oil under the jar mean the batch is above what that wax will bind. A flame that drowns or soots, and throw that is no better than 8%, are the burn-side signs.
10% needs two permissions, and the lower one wins
Every fragrance load in this catalogue sits under two separate stated limits. The wax page gives the maximum the grade is formulated to hold — a formulation maximum set by the wax manufacturer, not a rule imposed on you from outside. The fragrance oil page gives the candle usage range the oil is sold for. Both apply to the same batch, so your working limit is whichever number is lower. Nothing else — not the family, not the price, not how strong the bottle smells — changes that arithmetic.
That is why "can I use 10%" has no single answer. In Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, whose page states up to 13% of total wax weight, 10% sits three points below the ceiling and the oil decides. In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, 10% is the ceiling and you have no margin left for a weighing error. With Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil, whose page states 6–9% of total wax weight, 10% is not available in any wax, however much headroom the wax has.
Loads on CSI pages are stated as a percentage of wax weight, not of the finished candle. On 200 g of wax, 10% is 20 g of oil and the jar holds 220 g in total. If you work in percentage of the finished candle instead, the same jar needs 22 g to read 10%, which is a real 10% overshoot against the page figure — and on a wax rated to exactly 10% that overshoot is the whole of your margin.

Which CSI wax grades will take 10%
Of the soy and soy-blend grades CSI sells, three publish a fragrance maximum: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at up to 13% of total wax weight, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at up to 13%, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at up to 10%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish one, and neither do Premium Coconut Soy Wax, Natural Soy Pearl Wax, Soy Butter Wax or Soy Pillar Wax. We are not going to estimate those for you. The practical difference between 13% and 10% grades at a 10% load is margin. On Chunks or CSI 468 you are three points inside the stated maximum, so a gram of overshoot on a 200 g pour — 20 g becoming 21 g, a 10.5% load — is still comfortably inside the figure on the page. On CSI 464 at 10% the same gram takes you past it. That is not a safety cliff; it is the difference between a batch you can defend to a customer and one you cannot.
Which oil pages allow 10% — and the three that stop at 9%
CSI lists 92 fragrance oils. Seventy-two of those pages publish a candle usage range. Of those 72, 66 top out at exactly 10% — some as "up to 10% for soy wax", some as "soy 6–10%", some as "recommended load 7–10%, start at 7%" on the fine-fragrance pages. One page, Autumn Fragrance Oil, goes to 11%. Two go to 13%. Three stop at 9%. And 20 pages publish no candle percentage at all.
That distribution is the real answer to this question. If you pour a general CSI oil in a soy container candle, 10% is almost always the top of what the page will support — which means 10% is a boundary you are standing on, not a mid-range setting with room above it. Forty of the pages that name both waxes give a lower figure for paraffin than for soy, commonly 6% or 6–8% against 10% in soy, because paraffin releases fragrance more readily and needs less of it to read the same.

The three 9% oils are worth knowing by name because two of them are exactly the kind of rich, dark, expensive-smelling scent a maker reaches for when they want more throw — and reaching for more of them is the wrong move. If Mahogany Teakwood at 9% is not filling the room, the answer is a bigger melt pool or a different oil, not a percentage the page does not offer.
For the 20 oils with no published candle figure, the honest position is that CSI has not published one and you should ask. Send the product name on WhatsApp and ask for the recommended candle load and the MSDS; in the meantime, if you must test, 6–8% is where general soy container practice starts and you can move from there once you have the figure in writing.
What the two extra points actually cost
The step from 8% to 10% on a 200 g candle is exactly 4 g of oil — 25% more fragrance than you were using. What that costs depends entirely on which oil, and the spread across CSI's range is wide: the cheapest 1 kg oils sit near ₹2.83 a gram and the fine-fragrance pages run several times higher.

Read the last column before the first. A 500-candle Diwali run at 10% instead of 8% costs between ₹5,664.00 and ₹10,442.00 more in oil alone, and you commit that money in one purchase order weeks before a single jar is sold. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026; with a 14–21 day cure plus courier time, festive stock wants pouring by about mid-October, which means the oil order goes in now, at the load you have already tested — not at a load you hope will work.
There is a stock-side cost too. At 10%, a 1 kg bottle of oil dresses 10 kg of wax instead of 12.5 kg — 50 candles of 200 g instead of 62. If you plan fragrance inventory by candle count rather than by bottle count, moving the whole range from 8% to 10% quietly removes a fifth of your season's capacity (planning fragrance inventory before the festive season).
How to move from 8% to 10% without losing a batch
The point of this test is narrow and worth keeping narrow: it asks whether the wax in front of you holds 10% cleanly, and whether 10% reads differently from 8% in your jar and your room. Run it on the grade and the oil you actually sell, in the jar you actually sell, because the answer does not transfer between waxes.
Three test jars in CSI 464 with Sandalwood at 10% cost ₹623.75 in materials. The equivalent decision taken blind — moving a 500-candle festive run from 8% to 10% because a customer said a sample smelled faint — commits ₹10,053.60 with no evidence attached.
Six signs the wax is not holding your 10%
Soy holds fragrance in a solid crystal structure that formed while the jar cooled. There is a quantity it can bind and keep bound; past that, the surplus migrates to the nearest boundary — the top surface, the glass wall, or the base — and shows itself. These are the six tells, in the order they usually appear.

The last row is the one that costs the most money and gets noticed the least. If a scent scores the same at 8% and 10% after a proper 14-day cure, the extra 4 g a candle is a pure loss — ₹1,044.20 over a 50-jar batch with Lavender — and the real constraint is somewhere else entirely: melt pool, wick size, jar diameter or the oil itself (why more fragrance oil does not always mean stronger candles).
Indian storage conditions sharpen every one of those signs. A load that sits quietly at 24°C in a Bengaluru flat can weep on a Nagpur or Ahmedabad shelf that touches 40°C by April, and a monsoon week in Mumbai or Kochi keeps surfaces tacky long enough for a customer to notice. If your 10% jars behave at home and fail after a courier run in May, the load is marginal for your climate rather than wrong on paper — and 9% will usually fix it for less money.
What changes in the process once you reach 10%
Temperature and stirring
The published add window is unchanged: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for 85°C within an 80–90°C band and a gentle two-minute stir. What changes is how much that stir has to do. Twenty grams of oil takes longer to disperse through 200 g of wax than 16 g does, and under-stirring shows up as streaks, uneven throw between jars from one batch, and oil at the surface — which looks exactly like an over-ceiling load and is not (add temperature for soy wax). Time the two minutes with a clock, not by feel.
Flash points and the add window
Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property. It is not a ranking of hot throw and it is not the temperature at which fragrance burns off in wax. Sixteen CSI oil pages give a numeric figure, and most sit far above the add window — Sandalwood at 203°C, British Rose at 192°C, Blue Ocean at 143°C. A few sit low: Neroli at 85°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C. With those, add at the lower end of the 80–90°C window, stir and pour promptly rather than holding the pot hot — and the advice is the same at 8% as at 10%.
The wick is part of the load decision
More oil makes the fuel wetter and the melt behaviour slightly different, so a wick that gave a full pool at 8% is not automatically right at 10%. Re-run the pool check: light a cured jar for three hours and see whether the pool still reaches the wall without the flame flaring or the wick mushrooming. CSI's Eco Candle Wicks come as Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each; wick sizing tables by jar diameter are not published per wick, so this is a test-burn question (wick guide by diameter).
Colour, vanillin and cure
Where an oil contains vanillin, 25% more oil means 25% more vanillin in the wax, so the ivory or amber toning those pages warn about arrives sooner and a shade deeper. Cinnamon Vanilla states 2.5% vanillin and moderate discolouration; Vanilla Bean states 2.5% and advises testing with lighter wax. British Rose, Sandalwood, Jasmine, Blue Ocean, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Vetiver state 0% vanillin. Yellowing is cosmetic — it changes nothing about burn or throw — but it changes what a white-wax gifting range looks like in week three (fragrances least likely to discolour white wax). Cure does not shorten at a higher load either: some oil pages quote 24–48 hours before a candle can be lit, which is fair as the earliest a jar can be test-burned, while soy throw keeps building to 14–21 days.
When 8% is the better commercial answer
Four situations where the honest recommendation is to stay at 8%, or to go to 9% and stop. First, a wax whose page states 10% as its maximum, in a workshop that weighs to the nearest 5 g: you are asking a ceiling to absorb your measurement error. Second, small jars in small rooms — a 100 g votive at 8% in a 10 × 12 ft bedroom is already enough for most buyers, and the complaint you will get is that it is too much, not too little. Third, summer and monsoon dispatch, where a marginal load plus a 40°C delivery van is what turns a clean jar into a weeping one at the customer's end. Fourth, any oil the page already describes as high strength: paying 25% more for an oil that was designed to work at 7% is a margin decision disguised as a quality decision.
The reverse case is real too. Large open-plan living rooms, wide multi-wick jars, and light citrus or aquatic profiles that read softer in soy are the places where the top of the range earns its keep — and on Chunks or CSI 468, 10% is a comfortable setting rather than a ceiling. One verified reviewer of British Rose above puts the counter-argument better than we can: they found that with the right oil you can go for the minimum percentage and still get the smell you want. Both things are true, and only your own three jars can tell you which applies to your scent.
If you are genuinely at the top of what both pages allow and the candle still under-performs, the load is no longer the variable. Look at pool width and wick size, at the cure clock, at the room, and at whether the oil suits soy at all (why the same fragrance smells weaker in soy). Adding a percentage the page does not offer is not an option we will help you justify.
