Cost to Make a 250 g Candle in India

Which line is biggest in a 250 g candle? Wax, at 65.3% of the pour, against 31.6% for fragrance and 3.0% for the wick. Across CSI's six container soy grades the wax line alone spans ₹130.25 a candle, which is wider than the ₹96.28 spread across six fragrance oils at the same load.
Does CSI sell a jar that holds 250 g of wax? No container currently in stock publishes a 250 gram fill weight. Published weights run 50 g, 70 g, 85 g, 135 g, 150 g and 180 g, then jump to about 500 g, 550 g, 600 g and 700 g. So either source the vessel yourself and enter your own price, sell 250 g as a pair of 150 g jars (₹388.81 in materials), or pour a clip-top container to its stated 550 g fill.
How much fragrance oil does a 250 g candle need? 20 g at 8% of wax weight — 15 g at 6%, 25 g at 10%. On 1 kg pricing that is ₹56.64 as Citrus Lemon, ₹61.36 as British Rose and ₹152.92 as Dark Vanilla. A 15 gm sample bottle cannot fill one candle at this size.
What 250 g means before anybody costs it
In this series a 250 g candle means 250 g of wax in the vessel. Fragrance sits on top of that weight rather than inside it: CSI product pages state loads as a percentage of total wax weight, so an 8% load on 250 g of wax is 20 g of oil and 270 g leaves the pitcher. Take 8% of a finished 250 g candle instead and you dose 18.5 g, which is a different candle, a different throw and a different cost. Pick one convention, write it at the top of the sheet, and never mix the two inside one range.
Costed at that unit, the pour is ₹194.11: ₹126.85 of wax, ₹61.36 of oil and ₹5.90 of wick. Read the shares before the total. Wax is 65.3% of what CSI can price, fragrance 31.6% and the wick 3.0%. That is the sentence this page exists to make: at 250 g the wax grade is the largest single decision on the sheet, and unlike the scent it is a decision your customer never sees on the label.
| Line | Quantity | Priced from | Per candle | Share of the pour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy wax | 250 g fill | Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 | ₹126.85 | 65.3% |
| Fragrance oil | 20 g at 8% of wax weight | British Rose 1 kg, ₹3.07/g | ₹61.36 | 31.6% |
| Wick | 1 pre-tabbed wick | Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1), ₹5.90 each at 100 | ₹5.90 | 3.0% |
| The pour | 270 g out of the pitcher | Three live product pages | ₹194.11 | 100% |
| Vessel | 250 g capacity | See the vessel section below | Varies by route | — |

Two small lines belong on the sheet the moment you sell rather than gift: a wick sticker at ₹2.50 and a candle care sticker at ₹0.83, together ₹3.33, which takes the pour to ₹197.44. Everything past that point — the box the candle ships in, the printed label, the ribbon, the courier, the electricity, your own hours — is not a CSI product. Those lines get rows on this page and the rows stay empty, because a supplier that fills them in is guessing with your money.
Wax is the biggest number at this size
Going from a 200 g fill to a 250 g fill adds ₹25.37 of wax and ₹12.27 of oil on this build, ₹37.64 in all, for a candle a quarter larger. That is the arithmetic of moving up a size: the pour scales almost exactly with weight, the wick does not scale at all, and the vessel scales in steps. So the grade you pour becomes the line worth arguing about, and the table below prices all six container soys at the fill.
| Wax grade | 1 kg price | 250 g of wax | Stated maximum load | Pour with British Rose and an Eco C1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹399.00 | ₹99.75 | Not published | ₹167.01 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹450.00 | ₹112.50 | Not published | ₹179.76 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | ₹126.85 | Up to 10% | ₹194.11 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 | ₹149.75 | Up to 13% | ₹217.01 |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | ₹650.00 | ₹162.50 | Up to 13% | ₹229.76 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax | ₹920.00 | ₹230.00 | Not published | ₹297.26 |
The spread across those six grades is ₹130.25 a candle on wax alone. Hold that next to the scent spread in the next section — ₹96.28 between the cheapest and dearest of six oils at the same load — and you have the finding that separates 250 g from every smaller size in this series: at this fill the wax grade moves the bill further than the fragrance does. On a 100 g candle nobody would bother arguing about ₹399.00 against ₹920.00 a kilo. At 250 g, poured forty times, it is the difference between a comfortable batch and a thin one.
Three of the six do not publish a maximum fragrance load at all — Eco Soy CSI 400, Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Premium Coconut Soy Wax. At a 250 g fill an unpublished ceiling costs more to get wrong than at 100 g, because a batch that has to be remelted takes 250 g of wax with it each time. Ask for the figure on WhatsApp before you commit a 250 g range to any of them, and keep the 8% starting point until you have it in writing.
Soy Pillar Wax is deliberately missing from the table even though at ₹600.00 a kilo it sits right in the middle of the range. Its page sells it for moulds, pillars and designer candles, not for jars, and a 250 g jar poured in it is a support conversation waiting to happen. If you want the case for paying more per kilo inside a jar, the argument for a luxury soy in jar candles is about adhesion and finish rather than about the ₹130.25 itself.
Twenty grams of scent, and the bottle that cannot fill one candle
Twenty grams is the number that changes how you buy fragrance. CSI's smallest oil packs are 15 gm — British Rose at ₹94.40, for instance — and 15 g will not fill a single 250 g candle at an 8% load. At this size the smallest realistic test purchase is the 50 gm bottle at ₹212.40, which is two candles with 10 g to spare, and the smallest sensible production pack is the 500 gm at ₹1,593.00 or the kilo at ₹3,068.00. Makers who moved up from 100 g candles often keep buying the same small bottles out of habit and quietly pay for it on every pour.
| Fragrance oil | Per gram | 6% · 15 g | 8% · 20 g | 10% · 25 g | 8% → 10% adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2.83 | ₹42.48 | ₹56.64 | ₹70.80 | ₹14.16 |
| British Rose | ₹3.07 | ₹46.02 | ₹61.36 | ₹76.70 | ₹15.34 |
| Roasted Coffee | ₹3.74 | ₹56.07 | ₹74.76 | ₹93.45 | ₹18.69 |
| Sandalwood | ₹5.03 | ₹75.40 | ₹100.54 | ₹125.67 | ₹25.13 |
| Apple Cinnamon | ₹4.74 | ₹71.15 | ₹94.87 | ₹118.59 | ₹23.72 |
| Dark Vanilla | ₹7.65 | ₹114.69 | ₹152.92 | ₹191.15 | ₹38.23 |
Two ceilings govern the figure you actually pour: the wax page's stated maximum and the oil page's stated candle range, commonly 6–10% of total wax weight on CSI oil pages. The lower of the two is the one that applies, every time. These are formulation maximums stated by the wax and oil manufacturers rather than limits imposed from outside, and MSDS and IFRA documentation is available on request. Where a wax page publishes no ceiling, treat the oil page's range as your working limit until CSI confirms the wax figure.
One wick, two wicks, or a wooden one
A 250 g fill can be a tall narrow candle on one wick or a wide one that needs two. The cost difference looks trivial and is not. One Eco C1 is ₹5.90, two are ₹11.80, two C2 wicks are ₹18.88, a Cotton Braided Wick is ₹12.00, and a Performance Wooden Wick is ₹59.00 each in the pack of ten or ₹41.30 each at a hundred. A wooden wick alone costs more than the fragrance in a value pour. What it buys is a crackle and a look, not a stronger throw, so it deserves to be a deliberate brand decision rather than an accident of the order form.
| Wicking choice | Per candle | Priced from | What the page states |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 | ₹590.00 per 100 | Cotton and paper fibres, made for natural waxes |
| One Eco Candle Wick Thick (C2) | ₹9.44 | ₹944.00 per 100 | The heavier of the two Eco sizes |
| Two Eco C1 wicks | ₹11.80 | ₹590.00 per 100 | Two wicks, two stickers, twice the centring work |
| Two Eco C2 wicks | ₹18.88 | ₹944.00 per 100 | The usual answer for a genuinely wide 250 g jar |
| One Cotton Braided Wick | ₹12.00 | ₹600.00 per 50 | For diameters exceeding 8 cm; 10.16 cm tall |
| One Performance Wooden Wick | ₹59.00 | ₹590.00 per 10, ₹4,130.00 per 100 | Imported, supplied with tabs, crackles while burning |
Double-wicking does something to your buying that the per-candle figure hides: it halves what a pack yields. A hundred-wick pack covers a hundred single-wick candles or fifty double-wick ones, and it doubles the sticker count as well. Forty 250 g candles on two wicks need eighty wicks and eighty stickers rather than forty of each — a small arithmetic slip that has ended more than one Friday batch three candles short.
There is no published table of wick size against jar diameter on CSI's wick pages, and this page will not invent one. The honest method is unchanged whatever the candle weighs: pick a starting wick from the diameter guide, pour two or three test candles, burn them for four hours, and look at the melt pool and the mushrooming before you buy a hundred of anything. At 250 g the test is worth more than at any smaller size, because every failed candle takes ₹126.85 of wax down with it.
The vessel step CSI's catalogue does not make
No container currently in stock at CSI publishes a 250 gram fill weight. The published weights climb from 50 g and 70 g through 85 g, 135 g, 150 g and 180 g, and then jump to about 500 g, 550 g, 600 g and 700 g. The 200 ml matte and salsa jars sit in between, but they publish a volume rather than a weight, and millilitres are not grams: soy is lighter than water, so a jar that holds 200 ml of water holds less than 200 g of soy. CSI publishes no density figure for its waxes, and this page will not invent one to bridge the gap.
| Container | Published fill | Pack | Per unit | Usable for a 250 g candle? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar | 50 g | 10 for ₹450.00 | ₹45.00 | No |
| White Matte Votive Jar | 70 g | 10 for ₹318.60 | ₹31.86 | No |
| Tin Container, 85 g | 85 g | 12 for ₹849.60 | ₹70.80 | No |
| Tin Container, 135 g | 135 g | 12 for ₹1,161.12 | ₹96.76 | Only as half of a 250 g pair |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 150 g; hot-pour safe to 85°C | 10 for ₹944.00 | ₹94.40 | Only as half of a 250 g pair |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | 150 g | 10 for ₹1,070.00 | ₹107.00 | Only as half of a 250 g pair |
| Ceramic Jar | 180 g | Single unit | ₹129.80 | No |
| Apothecary Jar with Dome Lid | About 500 g to 700 g | Single unit | ₹212.40 / ₹250.00 | Only if the candle moves up to its fill |
| Clip-Top Glass Container | 550 g; 11 × 11 × 10 cm | Single unit | ₹229.00 | Only at 550 g |
| Borosilicate Glass Jar | 500–600 g | Single unit | ₹200.00 | Only at 500–600 g |
A 250 g candle built from this catalogue therefore takes one of three routes, and each has a different bill. Route one: buy the vessel elsewhere. CSI prices the pour at ₹194.11 and the vessel becomes your own figure, entered from your own invoice; no number goes in that box on this page. Route two: sell 250 g as a pair. Two 150 g glass jars at ₹94.40 each, poured to 125 g apiece, make a boxed set whose CSI materials come to ₹388.81. Route three: stop fighting the catalogue and go bigger. A clip-top container at ₹229.00 states a 550 g wax fill; poured to it, that is ₹279.07 of wax, ₹134.99 of oil at 8%, two C2 wicks and the vessel, or ₹661.94 in all.
Route two is the one Indian brands underestimate most often. Splitting 250 g across two vessels doubles the vessel line and the wick line, so the pair costs ₹388.81 against a pour of ₹194.11 plus whatever a single jar costs you — ₹188.80 of that total is glass. What you get back is a gifting format that sells at Diwali and in corporate orders, where two smaller candles in a box read as more generous than one larger one. It is a marketing decision with a cost attached, and it should be taken with the cost in front of you rather than after the boxes arrive.
Route three deserves a fair hearing too. The economics of a 550 g candle are better per gram than a 250 g one, because the vessel and the wicks are shared across more than twice the wax. ₹661.94 of materials for a candle that can carry a much higher price is arithmetic worth checking before you commit to the smaller size, especially for the corporate gifting season, where one substantial candle often out-sells two modest ones. Choosing the jar is where that decision actually gets made.
Pack arithmetic: where 250 g is kind, and where it bites
A 250 g fill is the only common size that divides CSI's wax packs without a remainder: 1 kg is exactly four candles, 5 kg is twenty, 10 kg is forty. That makes planning unusually clean and makes one mistake unusually expensive — order exactly 10 kg for forty candles and the wax that stays in the pitcher costs you a whole candle rather than a fraction of one. Allow for pot loss before you count the candles, not after you have promised them.
| Pack | Price | Candles at 250 g / 20 g | Rate per candle | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 500 g | ₹260.00 | 2 | ₹130.00 | ₹520.00 a kilo — the one wax pack that costs more per kilo |
| CSI 464 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 4 | ₹126.85 | The reference rate used all over this page |
| CSI 464 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | 20 | ₹126.85 | Same printed rate as the kilo, fewer parcels |
| CSI 464 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | 40 | ₹126.85 | The largest printed wax pack |
| British Rose 15 gm | ₹94.40 | 0 | — | Below one candle's 20 g dose |
| British Rose 50 gm | ₹212.40 | 2, with 10 g over | ₹106.20 | ₹4.25 a gram |
| British Rose 100 gm | ₹342.20 | 5 | ₹68.44 | ₹3.42 a gram |
| British Rose 500 gm | ₹1,593.00 | 25 | ₹63.72 | ₹3.19 a gram |
| British Rose 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | 50 | ₹61.36 | ₹3.07 a gram |
| Eco C1 100 wicks | ₹590.00 | 100 single-wick, or 50 double-wick | ₹5.90 | One sticker per wick at ₹2.50 |
Two lessons fall out of that table. The first is that wax pack size barely moves the printed rate — ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, the same at 5 kg and within a rupee at 10 kg — so the reason to buy big is fewer parcels, fewer part-packs and one consistent batch of wax, not a discount. Only the 500 g pack differs, at ₹520.00 a kilo, which quietly costs ₹3.15 on every 250 g candle you pour from it. Soy wax pricing by pack shows the same flat pattern across the range.
The second is that fragrance packs move a great deal, and at 20 g a candle they move fast. The kilo question answers itself at this size: forty candles need 800 g of one scent, two 500 gm packs of British Rose are ₹3,186.00, and the 1 kg pack is ₹3,068.00 — ₹118.00 less for more oil. Buying two mid-size packs because the kilo felt like a commitment is the most common self-inflicted cost in a 250 g line, and it repeats on every reorder.
Forty candles: what actually leaves your account
Forty 250 g candles at the standard pour consume ₹7,764.40 of wax, oil and wick, or ₹7,864.40 with a wick sticker each. The order is larger than that, because 10 kg of wax with no allowance is a batch that ends one candle short, because wicks come in fifties and hundreds, and because a sticker sheet holds exactly forty with nothing spare. A 3% pot-loss allowance on wax and oil is assumed here and stated as an assumption — it is not measured data, and your own rate will depend on your pitcher, your pouring speed and how cold the workshop gets.
| Item | Needed | Packs bought | Spend | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10 kg, 10.3 kg with a 3% allowance | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg = 11 kg | ₹5,581.40 | About 700 g — nearly three more candles |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 800 g, 824 g with the allowance | 1 × 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | About 176 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 40 single wicks | 1 × 50 pack | ₹295.00 | 10 wicks |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 40 | 1 sheet of 40 | ₹100.00 | None — buy two sheets if you double-wick |
| Order total | ₹9,044.40 | |||
| 250 g vessels | 40 | Not published at this fill by CSI | your figure | |
| Outer boxes, labels, courier, labour | your figure | Not sold by CSI | — |
That is ₹226.11 a candle of cash out against ₹7,864.40 of cost in across forty candles. The difference is stock rather than loss — the leftover wax and oil pour the next batch — but it is the number your October balance feels. Note too that 10 kg is the largest printed wax pack: a single consignment beyond that is quoted on WhatsApp, and no rate that is not printed on a product page appears anywhere on this page.
What this page will not put a number on
CSI sells wax, fragrance oil, wicks, containers, dyes, stickers and tools, and every one of those has a live price on a product page. CSI does not sell outer cartons, bubble wrap, mailers, printed labels, tags, ribbon, shrink wrap, courier services, electricity, rent, insurance, photography, advertising or your time. Because it does not sell them, it does not know what they cost you, and a number invented for those rows would quietly corrupt every price you set from them. They stay blank.
| Line | Where your number comes from | CSI figure |
|---|---|---|
| Outer carton or mailer | Your packaging supplier's invoice, per unit at the quantity you buy | your figure |
| Printed label and tag | Your printer's invoice, with any setup charge spread over the run | your figure |
| Ribbon, tissue, filler | Your own invoice, per candle | your figure |
| Courier or freight | Your courier's rate card at the dead weight and the volumetric weight of a 250 g candle | your figure |
| Payment gateway or marketplace fee | Your channel's own statement | your figure |
| Electricity and workshop | Your own bills, divided by the candles made that month | your figure |
| Your labour | The hourly figure you are willing to work for, times the hours the batch takes | your figure |
| Materials from CSI | Live product pages, September 2026 | ₹194.11 pour, plus the vessel |
One point is worth making plainly, because CSI's own reviews raise it: delivery charges are a real cost and they are your cost, not a CSI figure this page can quote. A 250 g candle is heavy, and forty of them are heavier still, in both directions — the wax coming in and the candles going out. Whatever you pay to receive raw materials and whatever you pay to send finished candles both belong in that table, entered from the actual bill. Consolidating into fewer, larger consignments is usually the lever that moves it, which is another reason the 10 kg wax pack earns its place even though its printed rate matches the kilo.
Nor does this page work out your tax position or tell you which registrations a candle business needs. Store prices are inclusive of tax and GST invoicing is available on request; what that means for your own accounts is a question for your own adviser. What a supplier can do is hand you a clean materials number, dated and sourced, so that the conversation with that adviser starts from facts rather than from guesses.
Five habits that keep a 250 g costing honest
Date every rate and name every pack
Every figure here is live for September 2026, and prices and availability change. A sheet that says British Rose is ₹3.07 a gram is only correct while the kilo pack is ₹3,068.00. Write the pack size and the month beside each rate, so that next quarter you can see which line moved instead of re-costing the whole candle from scratch. The linked product pages are always the authoritative version.
Recheck the fill weight after any vessel change
A 250 g candle is defined by what the vessel actually takes, and two jars of the same nominal size from different batches rarely take the same weight. Weigh the first pour of every new vessel, then check again after a reorder. If the real fill turns out to be 235 g, your oil at 8% is 18.8 g and the pour is ₹182.82 rather than ₹194.11 — a difference you only ever find on a scale. A kitchen scale you already own will do the job; CSI's own candle making tool list covers the rest of the bench.
Cost colour, or leave it out on purpose
Liquid dye is the line most often forgotten, because one bottle lasts so long that it stops feeling like a cost. A 50 gm bottle of liquid candle dye is ₹472.00; assume a fiftieth of a bottle per 250 g candle — an assumption, not a measured dose — and the line is ₹9.44. That is small, but a range of six colours means six bottles sitting on a shelf, and stock is cash. Either cost it or write on the sheet that you have deliberately left it out.
Re-cost each scent separately before a festive drop
A 250 g range is rarely one scent. The pour runs from ₹162.29 on the cheapest combination in the tables above to ₹392.36 on the dearest, and a festive range priced off the cheapest one will lose money on exactly the scents that sell. The Diwali fragrance shortlist is a sensible place to start choosing, but cost each candidate at your own fill before you print a price list.
Separate what the candle cost from what the month cost
A materials number is not a business number. Forty candles at ₹7,864.40 of materials tells you nothing about whether the month worked, because the month also contains the boxes, the courier, the failed batch, the samples you gave away and your evenings. Keep the two sheets apart and use a proper method for the second one — the 2026 pricing formula for Indian makers and how much profit is really in candle making both start where this page stops.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the wax, oil and wicks costed on this page, which makes the vessel section worth reading twice. We do not currently stock a container that publishes a 250 gram fill weight, and rather than steer you into half-filling a 550 g jar we have written the gap down and left that row of the worksheet blank. The second admission is cheaper for you than for us: the ₹162.29 value pour is ₹162.57 below the premium one, and if your own burn test says the cheaper grade and the cheaper scent perform in your jar, that difference is yours to keep.
Every price is from live CSI stock in September 2026; the linked product pages are authoritative, and prices and availability change. Fragrance ceilings are quoted from the product pages — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13% — while Eco Soy CSI 400, Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Premium Coconut Soy Wax publish none, and the tables say so rather than estimate. Container capacities are quoted exactly as each page states them, in grams or in millilitres, with no conversion between the two. The 3% pot-loss allowance and the one-fiftieth dye dose are stated assumptions, not measured data. Store prices are inclusive of taxes as stated on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page; nothing here is tax, registration or licensing advice.
