Five Diwali Candle Fragrances That Can Become Bestsellers
What does one 200g candle cost to make? ₹267.27 to ₹291.27 in materials at 500g fragrance pricing. Every candle carries the same ₹163.30 base — 184g wax, one wick, one jar — plus 16g of oil at ₹103.97 to ₹127.97.
What should I charge? Six tealights at ₹549, a 200g jar at ₹899, a 300g Royal Oud hero at ₹1,499. That holds materials at 30–34% of retail across all three tiers.
And the gift set? Three 200g candles plus box, filler, tissue and stickers cost ₹909.65 in materials. Sell at ₹2,699 — do not discount it below the sum of its parts.
The five picks, defended
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Lakshmi Puja in the Pradosh Kaal muhurat of 5:31 to 7:55 pm. That is roughly twelve weeks from now, which means fragrance needs to be decided and ordered by late August or early September to pour, cure and ship comfortably. What follows is the decision itself. Each pick is defended on what it smells like, why it fits Diwali specifically, who buys it, what 16g costs in a 200g candle, and what the finished candle should retail at.
Why it fits Diwali: no other family carries the same ritual permission. Sandalwood is the one scent an Indian household already associates with lighting something, which means a sandal candle needs no explanation on a product page and no apology in a pooja room. It is also the safest possible scent for a gift to someone whose taste you do not know — the failure mode of sandalwood is "pleasant", never "wrong".
Who buys it: the household buying for itself, the corporate gifting manager ordering 200 units who cannot risk offending anyone, and the wedding-favour buyer working the November–December season that overlaps Diwali. This is your volume pick and it should be the scent you hold most stock of.
The cost case: at 500g the oil is ₹8.00 per gram, so ₹127.97 of fragrance in a 200g candle and ₹291.27 in total materials. It is the one pick on this list where the jump to 1kg genuinely pays — ₹7.00 per gram, a 12.5% cut.
| Size | Price | Per gram | 200g candles @ 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100g | ₹799 | ₹7.99 | ≈6 |
| 500g | ₹3,999 | ₹8.00 | ≈31 |
| 1kg | ₹6,999 | ₹7.00 | ≈62 |
Why it fits Diwali: Diwali candles burn after dark, in rooms full of people, alongside food. A bright or fresh scent competes with the mithai; a heavy sweet gourmand cloys within an hour. A tobacco-vanilla sits exactly between those two failures. It also photographs well in copy — "warm", "amber", "evening" are the words gifting buyers search with.
Who buys it: the first-time candle buyer, who needs a scent name they can predict from the label, and the person buying three identical gifts in one go. This is your lowest-friction online sale of the five.
The cost case: ₹8.00 per gram at 500g, so ₹127.97 per 200g candle and ₹291.27 in materials. The 1kg tin drops it to ₹7.50 per gram. If your buyer base skews conservative and you want a plainer sweet note, Vanilla Bean at ₹790/100g is the straight substitute — but expect vanillin discolouration in white soy over several weeks.
| Size | Price | Per gram | 200g candles @ 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100g | ₹799 | ₹7.99 | ≈6 |
| 500g | ₹3,999 | ₹8.00 | ≈31 |
| 1kg | ₹7,499 | ₹7.50 | ≈62 |
Why it fits Diwali: spice is the note that makes a candle feel seasonal without being literal. It also solves a real merchandising problem — every collection needs one scent that is unmistakably festive at a glance, and "cinnamon" does that on a label in a way that "oud" does not. In a small vessel it is genuinely excellent, because spice notes project hard from a small melt pool where florals struggle.
Who buys it: the impulse buyer at a market stall or pop-up, the person adding a second item to reach free shipping, and anyone buying tealights. This is the scent that fills your entry tier and gets a customer into the collection at ₹549 rather than ₹899.
The cost case: the cheapest of the five at ₹6.50 per gram at 500g — ₹103.97 per 200g candle, ₹267.27 in total materials. It is also the only one of the five with 15g and 50g trial sizes, which makes it the natural scent to test a new vessel or a new load with.
| Size | Price | Per gram | 200g candles @ 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15g | ₹116 | ₹7.73 | ≈1 |
| 50g | ₹349 | ₹6.98 | ≈3 |
| 100g | ₹699 | ₹6.99 | ≈6 |
| 500g | ₹3,249 | ₹6.50 | ≈31 |
| 1kg | ₹6,499 | ₹6.50 | ≈62 |
Why it fits Diwali: rose is the flower of Indian celebration — it is in the garlands, the sweets and the rangoli — and a floral is the only way to reach the customer who finds sandalwood too traditional and oud too heavy. Most makers get this wrong by picking a light, pretty floral that vanishes in a warm November room. The smoke in this one is precisely what gives it enough body to survive a full evening's burn.
Who buys it: women buying for themselves, which is the single most underserved segment in Indian festive candle ranges. Almost every Diwali collection is built for gifting and forgets that a large share of festive candle spend is a woman buying one nice thing for her own house.
The cost case: ₹8.00 per gram at both 500g and 1kg, so ₹127.98 per 200g candle and ₹291.28 in materials — and no reason at all to buy the kilogram unless volume demands it. A cheaper rose route is British Rose at ₹342/100g, but it is a lighter, brighter rose and will not hold a room the same way.
| Size | Price | Per gram | 200g candles @ 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100g | ₹799 | ₹7.99 | ≈6 |
| 500g | ₹3,999 | ₹8.00 | ≈31 |
| 1kg | ₹7,999 | ₹8.00 | ≈62 |
Why it fits Diwali: because somebody in your customer list is buying a gift for their boss. The premium tier of a festive collection is not a vanity exercise — it exists so that a buyer with a ₹1,500 budget does not have to buy two ₹899 candles and pretend it was deliberate. Oud is the fastest scent in the Indian market to signal expense, and it does it before the buyer has even smelled the candle.
Who buys it: corporate gifting, men buying for other men, and the customer who already owns a bakhoor burner. This pick reaches the fewest people of the five and earns the most per unit.
The cost case: the cheapest per gram of the five at 500g — ₹6.60 per gram, ₹105.60 in a 200g candle, ₹268.90 in materials. That is the whole argument for it as a hero: a 300g version costs ₹453.44 in materials and sells at ₹1,499. If you want a second oud for a two-tier premium range, Regal Royal Oud (₹699/100g) and White Royal Oud (₹810/100g) sit either side of it.
| Size | Price | Per gram | 200g candles @ 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100g | ₹699 | ₹6.99 | ≈6 |
| 500g | ₹3,300 | ₹6.60 | ≈31 |
| 1kg | ₹6,400 | ₹6.40 | ≈62 |
What each costs per candle
Every 200g candle in this collection carries the same ₹163.30 base: 184g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999/10kg (₹0.60 a gram, so ₹110.20), one Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 at ₹590 per 100 (₹5.90), and one Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 (₹47.20). The only variable is the 16g of fragrance.
| Fragrance | Oil (16g) | Wax (184g) | Wick | Jar | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spicy Cinnamon | ₹103.97 | ₹110.20 | ₹5.90 | ₹47.20 | ₹267.27 |
| Royal Oud | ₹105.60 | ₹110.20 | ₹5.90 | ₹47.20 | ₹268.90 |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | ₹127.97 | ₹110.20 | ₹5.90 | ₹47.20 | ₹291.27 |
| Tobacco Vanilla | ₹127.97 | ₹110.20 | ₹5.90 | ₹47.20 | ₹291.27 |
| Smoked Rose Royale | ₹127.98 | ₹110.20 | ₹5.90 | ₹47.20 | ₹291.28 |
The spread across the whole collection is ₹24.01 — roughly 8% between the cheapest and dearest candle. That is small enough to justify a single shelf price for all five 200g candles, which is a merchandising decision worth taking deliberately. One price makes five candles read as a collection; five prices make them read as five unrelated products, and the customer starts comparing rather than choosing.
| Fragrance | 100g | 500g | 1kg | 500g → 1kg saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sacred Sandal Ember | ₹799 | ₹3,999 | ₹6,999 | ₹8.00 → ₹7.00 · 12.5% |
| Tobacco Vanilla | ₹799 | ₹3,999 | ₹7,499 | ₹8.00 → ₹7.50 · 6.3% |
| Royal Oud | ₹699 | ₹3,300 | ₹6,400 | ₹6.60 → ₹6.40 · 3.0% |
| Spicy Cinnamon | ₹699 | ₹3,249 | ₹6,499 | ₹6.50 → ₹6.50 · none |
| Smoked Rose Royale | ₹799 | ₹3,999 | ₹7,999 | ₹8.00 → ₹8.00 · none |
| All five | ₹3,795 | ₹18,546 | ₹35,396 | ≈31 / ≈156 / ≈312 candles |
The three-tier pricing ladder
A Diwali range needs three price points because it serves three budgets: the ₹500 add-on, the ₹900 gift, and the ₹1,500 statement. Building all three from the same five oils costs you almost nothing extra in fragrance and multiplies what a single customer can spend. Materials are held at 30–34% of retail across every tier, which is the working rule for a small Indian candle brand once labour, packaging, courier, gateway fees and breakage are accounted for.
Naming and packaging the five as one collection
Five candles become a collection through three things: a shared naming grammar, a shared vessel, and a single differentiator. Get those right and a customer who buys one candle understands immediately that there are four more. Get them wrong and you have five products that happen to have launched in the same month.
Naming grammar. Pick one structure and hold it across all five. The commonest workable pattern for an Indian festive range is a two-word name where the first word is sensory and the second is the note — so a sandalwood candle, a rose candle and an oud candle all read as siblings rather than as a supplier's product list. What you must avoid is mixing registers: one Hindi name, one English name and one French-sounding name in the same five will read as three collections. Whatever you choose, the scent description underneath should always name the actual notes, because that is what a gifting buyer scans for.
One vessel, one differentiator. Use the same jar for all five 200g candles and let the label carry the difference. Amber Shiny Glass with a black lid at ₹47.20 each hides the tinting that dark oils cause and reads warm under diya light; Red Shiny Glass with a golden lid at ₹50 and Black Shiny with golden lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 are the more overtly festive options. Then break the pattern exactly once, for the 300g Royal Oud hero, which gets the borosilicate jar with golden lid at ₹120. One deliberate break makes the hero legible on a shelf; two breaks make the range look accidental.
| Scent | Role | Formats | Retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sacred Sandal Ember | Devotional anchor · stock deepest | Tealights, 200g, hamper | ₹549 / ₹899 |
| Tobacco Vanilla | Warm gourmand · lowest-friction sale | 200g, hamper | ₹899 |
| Spicy Cinnamon | Spiced · entry tier and impulse | Tealights, 200g | ₹549 / ₹899 |
| Smoked Rose Royale | Floral · self-purchase | 200g | ₹899 |
| Royal Oud | Luxury hero · exclusive to 300g | 200g, 300g, premium hamper | ₹899 / ₹1,499 |
The hamper maths
The hamper is where a Diwali collection makes its money, because it converts one transaction into three candles. It is also where most makers quietly destroy their margin, by treating the box, filler and tissue as free and then discounting the set below the sum of its parts. Here is the actual arithmetic for a three-candle gift set built from Sacred Sandal Ember, Spicy Cinnamon and Royal Oud — one devotional, one spiced, one luxury, which is the most defensible trio for a gift.
| Line | Source | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 200g Sacred Sandal Ember | Wax, wick, jar, 16g oil | ₹291.27 |
| 200g Spicy Cinnamon | Wax, wick, jar, 16g oil | ₹267.27 |
| 200g Royal Oud | Wax, wick, jar, 16g oil | ₹268.90 |
| Outer box | 7 × 5 × 4 inch, 3-ply, ₹1,336 / 50 | ₹26.72 |
| Crinkle filler (≈60g) | 500g at ₹300 | ₹36.00 |
| Tissue, 2 sheets | 100 sheets at ₹650 | ₹13.00 |
| Care stickers ×3 | 500 at ₹413 | ₹2.49 |
| Paper tape | 50m at ₹236 | ₹4.00 |
| Total materials | Candles ₹827.44 + packaging ₹82.21 | ₹909.65 |
Price it at ₹2,699. That is 33.7% materials, identical to the margin structure of the single candles, and it is the same as three individual candles at ₹899. The instinct to knock it down to ₹2,499 as a "gift set saving" costs you ₹200 a box and pushes materials to 36.4% — and it does so for a customer who is not price-shopping. A Diwali hamper buyer is solving a social obligation under time pressure. What they want is for the box to look worth what they paid, and packaging is what makes it look that way, which is exactly the line the discount comes out of.
For the premium hamper, swap one 200g for the 300g Royal Oud hero: ₹453.44 plus two 200g candles at ₹291.27 each is ₹1,035.98, plus the same ₹82.21 of packaging, for ₹1,118.18 in materials. Price it at ₹3,499 — 32% materials, and a genuinely different object from the ₹2,699 box rather than the same box with a sticker on it. Everything above lives in the packaging materials range; jars are in glass jars for candle making.
Wax, fragrance load and cure
All five of these oils are heavy enough to carry well in soy at an 8% load, which is what every cost figure on this page assumes. The wax you choose sets your ceiling, and the ceiling is not a target — going over it does not produce a stronger candle, it produces an oily one that sweats and burns unpredictably in a room full of people.
| Wax | Best for in this collection | Load | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | The default for all three tiers; the headroom lets you push Spicy Cinnamon and Smoked Rose Royale harder than 8% | Up to 13% | ₹299 / 500g |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes) | Clear or pale glass where frosting would show; melt and pour 80–90°C, 60-month shelf life | Up to 10% | ₹260 / 500g |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | First-time makers and small tealight runs; one-pour, no additives, fragrance in at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring | Standard | ₹399 / 1kg |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | The 300g Royal Oud hero, where a smoother top and fuller throw justify the higher wax cost | Standard | ₹325 / 500g |
| Soy Pillar Wax | Moulded diya-shaped or sculptural pieces sold alongside the jars | Standard | ₹300 / 500g |
Wick to the jar diameter, not to the scent. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹590 per 100) suit the 200g amber jar; Thick C2 (₹944 per 100) suit the wider 300g borosilicate. An undersized wick will make all five of these read as weak, and it is the single most misdiagnosed fault in festive production, because the candles that get rushed are the ones that get under-wicked. Browse the full wick range if you are working with a vessel not listed here.
"Can become bestsellers" is a prediction, not a measurement. We are not claiming these five are bestsellers, and we are not quoting sales figures for them — CSI supplies raw materials and does not have visibility into what your finished candles do on your shelf. What is on this page is a reasoned commercial judgement, made on five stated criteria: cultural fit with Diwali specifically, breadth of buyer so that the five do not compete with each other, gifting suitability including corporate and hamper use, performance in soy at a realistic 8% load, and cost-per-candle headroom against a workable retail price. Any figure in this guide you can check; the picks themselves are an argument, and you are entitled to disagree with them.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We stock oils from ₹300 to over ₹24,000 per kilogram, so there is no commercial reason to steer you toward the expensive end. Three of these five are among the more affordable premium oils in the range, and the luxury hero is the cheapest of the five per gram at 500g.
