Quick answers — read this first
What's the formula? Order = monthly candles × wicks per candle × (1 + reject allowance) × months of cover + safety stock + QC wicks − wicks on hand − wicks on order, then round up to the smallest pack mix that covers it. Months of cover = how often you order + your lead time (including the new-lot check).

Worked, double-wick: 200 candles × 2 wicks × 1.04 × 2 months = 832; + 167 safety + 23 QC wicks − 260 on hand = 762; in Eco Thin (C1) packs, 770 wicks for ₹4,543.00.

Worked, single-wick: 500 candles × 1 × 1.03 × 2 = 1,030; + 206 + 23 − 180 = 1,079; in Eco Thick (C2) packs, 1,080 for ₹10,195.20. After this first order fills the pipeline, the monthly order settles at about one month's use: 540 C2 for ₹5,097.60.

Should I round up to a 1,000-pack? No. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack. Rounding SKU B to 1,000 would tie up ₹1,357.00 more for no saving.
The short answer
Count wicks, not candles: a two-wick SKU needs twice the wicks; count it as one and SKU B comes up 499 short.
Allowances are measured: rejects from your own batches, not a guess; QC wicks (23 per order) for the retained sample and the lot check.
Cover = interval + lead time: lead time includes the days a new lot spends in its check; CSI publishes no lead times, so measure yours.
Subtract only usable stock: released wicks on hand and orders on their way, never retained samples or quarantined packs.
From candles to a wick order SKU B: 400 g candle, two Eco Thin (C1) wicks · first order · worked example, wicks 0 200 400 600 800 1000 400 2 × 200 candles +16 + rejects 4% +416 × 2 months cover +167 + safety 10 days +23 + QC wicks retain/check −260 − on hand released 762 order before packs 770 in packs C1, no 10s Same steps, other SKUs: A (200 g, one C2): 1,079 → 1,080 in packs. C (300 g, Cotton Braided): 351 → 360 in packs. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack: round to cover the need. Counted as one wick per candle, SKU B would come up 499 wicks short.
The purchase quantity for SKU B, a 400 g candle on two Eco Thin (C1) wicks, built step by step (worked example). Wicks a month, plus rejects, times months of cover, plus safety stock and QC wicks, minus released wicks on hand, gives 762; rounded up to C1 packs (20 is the smallest in stock) it's 770. The same steps give 1,080 C2 for SKU A and 360 Cotton Braided for SKU C.
Straight answer
How do I calculate my wholesale wick purchase quantity from monthly candle sales, wick usage per candle, reject allowance, safety stock and supplier lead time?
Work per wick specification, in wicks, in this order. 1. Monthly wicks = monthly candles × wicks per candle × (1 + your measured reject allowance). 2. Cover = monthly wicks × months of cover, where months of cover = how often you order + your lead time, and lead time includes the time a new lot spends in its check. 3. Add the safety stock (a statistical figure from your own demand, or a simple rule such as ten production days of use, labelled) and the QC wicks each order needs: the retained reference sample and the new-lot check. 4. Subtract usable wicks on hand and wicks already on order; never retained samples or packs still in quarantine. 5. Round up to the smallest combination of packs that covers the result. At CSI, Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack, so rounding is about covering the count, not chasing a price break. Worked example: a 400 g candle on two Eco Thin (C1) wicks, 200 a month, 4% rejects, two months of cover, ten days' safety stock, 23 QC wicks and 260 on hand gives 762 wicks, bought as 500 + 100 + 100 + 50 + 20 = 770 for ₹4,543.00. Do this only for a wick that has passed full-life approval and replicates in that exact formula.
One line: candles × wicks per candle × (1 + rejects) × (interval + lead time) + safety + QC − usable on hand − on order, rounded to the smallest pack mix.
The worked example's first wholesale order, three SKUs: 1,080 Eco Thick (C2) ₹10,195.20 + 770 Eco Thin (C1) ₹4,543.00 + 360 Cotton Braided ₹4,320.00 = ₹19,058.20. All packs in stock on 7 October 2026 (the C1 10-pack is out and isn't used). Lead times aren't published; ask before you set your cover.
Eco C2 1,000-pack — ₹9,440.00

Your order, made precise

Five inputs. Three SKUs. One wick order you don't want to get wrong in either direction.

The worked example, labelled. You've finished the wick work this series is about: each formula's large-flame or soot problem was diagnosed, a smaller or different CSI wick was tested to the floor, replicated and written into the master formula (6996). Now you're moving from 100-packs to wholesale quantities for three SKUs, each on its own wick:

Three SKUs, three wick specifications
Worked example · your own sales, rejects and stock replace these · load as % of total weight
SKU Candle Approved wick Wicks per candle Candles a month Rejects Usable on hand
A 200 g at 8%, your 8 cm jar Eco Thick (C2) 1 500 3% 180
B 400 g at 8%, your 10 cm jar Eco Thin (C1), a pair 2 200 4% 260
C 300 g at 8%, your 9 cm jar Cotton Braided 1 150 2% 40

You order once a month. Your supplier's lead time is about three weeks to your door (yours to measure; CSI publishes none), and a new lot spends about ten days in its check, so call the lead time a month and the cover two months. You keep 23 QC wicks back from each order: 20 as the retained reference for the lot (6995) and 3 for the new-lot check (6994). Safety stock here is the simple version, ten production days of use at 25 production days a month; if several SKUs share one wick, size the safety stock on pooled demand instead (6997).

Safety first, plainly: quantity maths has one safety job, which is making sure the approved wick never runs out and gets "temporarily" replaced. A substitute that is even one rung too big brings back the tall flame, soot and hot glass the testing removed. If a batch was ever made on an unapproved wick, hold it and burn a retained candle in still air on a heat-safe surface, never unattended. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer (CSI lists none).

Why the calculated quantity comes out wrong: causes, ranked

The formula is simple. The numbers you feed it are where orders go wrong.

The ranking is our judgement from how small makers' wick orders usually miss. The table keeps causes that come from how customers burn your candles apart from what you make and count, because one of them can quietly inflate your reject allowance.

Cause ranking · wick order too big or too small
Counting, production, supply, customer burning and formulation, separated · cheapest check first
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Two-wick SKU counted per candle (counting) Double-wick SKU runs out half-way through the cover Does the line say wicks per candle? Work in wicks; take wicks per candle from the master formula SKU B: 499 short
2. Reject allowance guessed (production) Bins empty early, or wicks pile up Wicks drawn ÷ candles poured over 3 batches Use the measured rate A tally sheet
3. Retained or quarantined wicks counted as stock (counting) "On hand" looks fine; the bench is empty Count only released, usable packs Label retain and quarantine bags clearly Nothing
4. Lead time without the lot check (supply) Packs arrive on time but can't be used for ten days Order-to-release dates for the last packs Lead time = supply + check Nothing; timing
5. Customer soot returns booked as wick rejects (customer burning vs formulation) "Reject rate" rises after a complaint wave Burn retained candles from those batches per your label; clean means burning habit Keep returns out of the wick reject rate One candle per batch
6. A formula changes wick mid-cover (formulation) One wick's stock strands, another runs out Any change planned within the cover? Shorter cover for that SKU Stranded wicks

Cause 5 is easy to miss. If a wave of "your candle smokes" messages comes in after a festive season, some makers start wicking extra spares and call it rejects. Usually the cause is trimming, long burns or fans (the series' soot hub explains why: 6921). Burn a retained candle from the batch the way your label says before letting it touch the reject rate. Cause 6 is cadence territory: if a formula might change wicks, keep its cover short (6998).

Each term, and where its number comes from

Every input should have a source you could show someone.
The quantity formula, term by term
Where each number comes from · what it must not include · worked example values for SKU B

QC wicks Retained reference + lot check, per order Wicks for new development tests 23

On order Placed, not yet released Orders not yet confirmed none
Rounding Smallest in-stock pack mix that covers it Rounding up to a 1,000-pack 762 → 770

Reject allowance deserves the most care. It's wicks lost in production (a tab that lifts, a wick that leans and has to be pulled, a pour that buries a wick) divided by candles made, measured over at least 3 batches. Double-wick candles commonly lose more, because there are two wicks to place and keep straight (a common observation, not CSI data); 4% for SKU B against 3% for SKU A is the worked example's assumption, not a rule. Months of cover is where long lead times enter: a three-week courier time plus a ten-day lot check is about a month, so a monthly order needs two months of cover on the first order. Safety stock here uses the simplest rule (ten production days of use, labelled); for SKU A that's 20.6 wicks a day × 10 = 206.

First order vs every order after
The first calculation also fills the pipeline, so it's big. Once an order is always on its way, each monthly order comes out at about one month's wicks plus QC wicks: for SKU A, 515 + 23 = 538, bought as 500 + 20 + 20 = 540 for ₹5,097.60. If your steady-state orders keep coming out much bigger than a month's use, an input is wrong; start with the reject allowance.

Three SKUs worked, and the order that results

Same formula, three wicks, three rounding outcomes.

₹ ₹10,195.20 ₹4,543.00 ₹4,320.00

The whole first order is ₹19,058.20. Notice the rounding in column B: CSI's C1 10-pack is out of stock on 7 October 2026, so a C1 count can only be made of 20s, 50s and larger, and 762 rounds to 770: the nearest smaller mix, 760, falls two wicks short. Column A can use the C2 10-pack and lands within one wick of the need. Argued against our own interest: rounding SKU B up to a 1,000-pack would add ₹1,357.00 of cash for wicks at exactly the same ₹5.90 each. We'll sell you the 1,000-pack when your count is near 1,000; for 762, buy 770.

Counting SKU B per candle instead of per wick is the most expensive error in the table: the same steps with one wick per candle come out at 263 wicks to order, 499 short of the real need, and a double-wick SKU that runs out mid-month is exactly where people start "borrowing" a different wick. For a double-wick candle's own wick choice (reduce both before removing one), see 6917.

Before the wholesale order: three gates

A quantity is only as good as the specification it multiplies.

The formula assumes three things are already true. Each has its own check, and the third is a small controlled test you can run on the first production batch.

1
Gate 1: the wick is approved in this exact formulaAt least three candles to the floor with every third passing your limits, and replicates from a second pour date (6991). For a 2,000-candle plan, replicate before you buy (6992).
2
Gate 2: the reject rate is measuredOver your first 3 production batches, record wicks drawn and candles poured per SKU, and why each reject happened. Use that rate, not the worked example's 3% or 4%.
3
Gate 3: write the confirmation rule before the first batch3 candles from the first production batch of each SKU must pass the same in-house limits as the approval candles, in every third. One fail stops the wholesale order for that SKU until you know why. An in-house protocol, not an industry standard.
4
Burn the confirmation candles in four-hour sessionsStill air, trimmed to 5–6 mm. Log flame height, pool width and depth, mushroom size and a white soot card at hours 1–4, grams per session on one scale, and glass at fixed points with your own non-contact thermometer.
5
Go to the floorSKU A: 200 g above a 25 g floor at roughly 7 g an hour is about 7 sessions per candle (weigh your own). Judge top, middle and bottom separately; production batches drift late in the jar first.
6
Then place the orderRun the formula with the measured reject rate and today's usable stock, round to packs, and send it as written.

The confirmation candles cost little next to the order they protect: three SKU A candles are about ₹525.90 of materials at 1 kg oil and 10 kg wax prices (Woody Oud, CSI 464, C2; your jars excluded), against ₹10,195.20 of wicks and a month of production. If you're buying on CSI's stock, the published post on first burn-test wick purchases covers the sample-to-bulk step; this post assumes it's done.

The CSI wick buy list and the step to production

Your sheet does the maths. The pack mix does the buying.

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs, Eco Thin (C1), Eco Thick (C2) and Cotton Braided, with nothing in between and one wooden width. That makes the quantity sheet short: most ranges have one to three wick lines. It also means there is no nearby size to borrow if a line runs out, which is why safety stock and the "wicks per candle" column matter. When your counts are ready, send the sheet on WhatsApp; we'll confirm stock and dispatch time, and tell you plainly if a variant is short rather than substituting. Lot continuity across orders is something to ask about, not something our pages promise.

The exceptions: wooden wicks and cut-to-length rolls
The "smallest pack mix" rule assumes a flat price per wick, which holds for C1, C2 and Cotton Braided. It doesn't hold for Performance Wooden Wicks (₹59.00 each in 10s, ₹47.20 in 50s, ₹41.30 in 100s), so there the rule becomes "cheapest mix that covers the count". Worked example: a need of 42 wooden wicks costs ₹2,950.00 as five 10-packs but ₹2,360.00 as one 50-pack, so the 50-pack is cheaper even with 8 spare; a need of 90 costs ₹4,720.00 as two 50-packs and ₹4,130.00 as one 100-pack. For the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters), ₹706.82, the count is limited by the 100 tabs, and the cost per wick depends on the length you cut; your master formula's cut length turns metres into wicks. Either way, the wick still has to be the one your formula was approved on: CSI sells one wooden width only, so a wooden SKU's quantity sheet has no size to switch to.

Argued against our own interest, again: don't buy a festive year's wicks in October because the sheet makes it easy. Run the formula with your festive months' real candle counts and keep the cover at what your lead time needs. For a published view on when bulk-buying a single size is justified at all, see the post on buying 1,000 wicks only after every fragrance has passed. The full series route from first soot to this order is the playbook.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. If your festive candle counts are higher than usual, re-run the sheet with them now, with a lead time that includes the lot check, and order once. Send the counts per wick on WhatsApp for stock, dispatch and a GST invoice.

SKU A runs on one Thick (C2), SKU B on two Thin (C1). ₹9.44 and ₹5.90 a wick at every pack, so rounding is about covering the count with the fewest packs, never about a discount: SKU A's 1,079 becomes 1,000 + 50 + 20 + 10 = 1,080 for ₹10,195.20; SKU B's 762 becomes 500 + 100 + 100 + 50 + 20 = 770 for ₹4,543.00. In the text we captured the page states no dimensions and claims "minimal soot or smoke" (the page's words). Limitation: the C1 10-pack is out of stock on 7 October 2026, so C1 counts round to 20s and 50s.

The page states "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" and "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" (page wording, one rung of a test ladder). Limitation: there's no sized, tabbed CSI wick above it, so its safety stock matters more than the others'; if you run out there's nothing tested to fall back on.

Steel Wick Holder (Set of 5)
SKU B is the double-wick candle, and its reject allowance (16 wicks a month at 4%, labelled) is higher partly because two wicks have to stay put. The page describes a "3-hole layout" that "fits single, double, or triple wick setups" for jars "up to 9 cm wide". Limitation: in the text we captured the page doesn't state the hole spacing, so measure it against the spacing your approved candles used before you rely on it; a wider jar than 9 cm needs a different holder.

Skip for now: 1,000-packs for counts nowhere near 1,000; wick lines for formulas that haven't passed replicates; and any "spare" wick of a different size bought as insurance. A spare that isn't approved for the formula isn't a spare.

The CSI principle
Count wicks, not candles; measure rejects, don't guess them; subtract only what you can use; round to cover the count, not to the biggest pack.
Candles × wicks per candle × (1 + rejects) × (interval + lead time) + safety + QC − usable on hand − on order.
"Most wrong wick orders are right arithmetic on the wrong inputs. Check the wicks-per-candle column first."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you not to round up to our 1,000-packs, that bigger packs of C1, C2 and Cotton Braided aren't cheaper per wick, and that our pages publish no lead times or lot information you can plan on without asking.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used in any count. Page wording is quoted and attributed: the Eco page's "minimal soot or smoke" claim, Cotton Braided's 10.16 cm height and "exceeding 8 cm", and the Steel Wick Holder's "3-hole layout" and "up to 9 cm wide".

How do I calculate wicks for double-wick candles?
Multiply candles by two before anything else, and use the double-wick SKU's own reject rate. In the worked example, 200 two-wick candles a month need 416 wicks a month including 4% rejects.
What reject allowance should I use for wicks?
Your own measured rate: wicks drawn ÷ candles poured over at least three batches. The 2–4% in our worked example are assumptions, not industry figures.
Should lead time include testing a new wick lot?
Yes. A pack in its lot check can't be used, so your lead time is supply time plus check time. CSI publishes no lead times; ask on WhatsApp and log your own arrivals.
Is it cheaper to buy 1,000 wicks than 500?
Not for Eco C1, Eco C2 or Cotton Braided at CSI: the price per wick is the same at every pack. Buy the smallest pack mix that covers your calculated count.
Do retained sample wicks count as stock on hand?
No. Retained reference wicks and quarantined packs aren't usable stock. Add the retain and lot-check wicks to each order instead.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on moving from a failed wick to the correct CSI wick and a bulk purchase (6981–7000). It covers the wholesale wick purchase formula: each term and its source, a cause ranking for wrong orders, three SKUs worked (single C2, double C1, Cotton Braided) with pack rounding, first and steady-state orders, three gates before ordering with a first-batch confirmation rule, and the monthly routine.
