How Do I Choose a Container Wax Using Glass Adhesion, Fragrance Compatibility, Frosting, Hot Throw, Burn Quality and Indian Climate Stability Together?
शेयर करना
Which CSI wax adheres best? Unknown until you test: the Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages all claim excellent adhesion, so the claim ranks nothing.
In what order do I test? Desk screen, appearance, burn and throw, climate, then score and cost. See the stages.
What does it cost? ₹9,458.20–₹9,743.40 in CSI materials for three candidates against your wax, depending on which two survive.
Gate first, score second, cost last
A container wax for clear glass in India has to do six things: set cleanly against the glass, hold your fragrances without sweating or losing throw, give an acceptable top and surface, release scent well when burning, burn safely and evenly with a wick you can buy, and keep doing all of that through a north-Indian summer, a monsoon and a courier van. No wax page can tell you which of CSI's waxes does that in your jar — the Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages all claim excellent glass adhesion, so the claim ranks nothing, and CSI publishes no adhesion, frosting, throw or heat data for any wax.
The method on this page turns the six criteria into four gates and one score. Gates are pass/fail against house rules you write before pouring: a wax that fails a gate is out, whatever else it does well. The survivors are then scored on weighted criteria and compared on cost per visually acceptable candle. The stages run in order of cost — cheap desk checks first, burn tests later — so most waxes are eliminated before the expensive tests. Every stage uses the fair-comparison protocol — one variable, coded jars, rotated rack — and every stage is run in your hardest jar with your hardest oil, so the result covers your range.
The worked example is the series default candle: 150 g at 8% in CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — 12 g of British Rose and 138 g of wax per jar. The candidates are Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, against your current wax as the control. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is a fourth possible candidate, but its page publishes no ceiling, temperature or adhesion statement, so it starts stage 0 with blanks to fill from the maker's instructions on WhatsApp.
The six criteria, each with its test
Each criterion below names how it is measured, whether it is a gate, a weight or both, and which post in this section goes deeper. The scales are example house standards — no industry figure exists for an acceptable wet spot, frost, throw or heat change. Write yours at the top of the qualification file and keep them for every wax you ever test.
| Criterion | Role | How it is measured | Scale | Go deeper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glass adhesion | Gate (clear jars) · weight | Wet-spot grade from four-side photos at 48 h, 7 d, after cycle, 30 d | 0–4 per jar (example) | 7378, 7373 |
| Fragrance compatibility | Gate · weight | Your load inside the page ceiling; no sweating; no worse colour than control; throw holds | Pass/fail + throw score | 7362, 7363, 7379 |
| Frosting and tops | Weight | Frosting and top finish on the same jars as adhesion | 0–3 (example) | 7366, 7367 |
| Hot throw | Gate (your minimum) · weight | Blind panel, fixed room, fixed times and distances | 0–5 (example) | 7374 |
| Burn quality | Gate (safety) · weight | Wick ladder: pool, time to full pool, flame, soot, mushrooming, jar warmth, consumption | No worse than control on every safety line | 7377 |
| Indian climate stability | Gate · weight | Example warm hold and temperature cycles, plus a batch in your hardest season; re-photograph and re-burn | Change in grade vs before cycling | 7346, 7347 |
"Fragrance compatibility" needs a definition, because it is the criterion makers most often leave vague. Here it means four observable things for each of your oils in the candidate wax: your production load sits inside the wax page's published ceiling (13% for Chunks and CSI 468, 10% for CSI 464; none published for Natural Soy Pearl); the candle does not sweat or show an oily surface at that load; its colour is no worse than the same oil in your control wax after storage; and its throw meets your minimum at your standard cure checkpoint. CSI publishes no compatibility data for any oil and wax pair, so each of those is a test, not a lookup.
Stage 0: the desk screen (free)
Before pouring anything, put the page facts side by side and check three things against your product: does the wax's published fragrance ceiling cover your production load; does its published pour figure fit inside your jar's limit; and can you buy it in the packs your production needs. A wax that fails here is out without a single jar poured. Everything in the table is quoted from CSI's product pages — attributed, not tested.
| Wax | Fragrance ceiling | Temperatures on the page | Pour window in this jar | Cure / shelf life on the page | Adhesion wording (a claim) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 13% | Pour 75–80°C (spec table; steps 70–80°C); fragrance addition 80–90°C | Inside 85°C | Cure min. 48 h, ideally 1–2 weeks | "Excellent adhesion … reduces wet spots and pull-away"; "minimal frosting or wet spots when used correctly" | ₹299.00 / 500 g · ₹599.00/kg at 5 kg |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10% | 80–90°C melt/pour range | 80–85°C only | Shelf life 60 months (page) | "Excellent glass adhesion", single-pour, low frosting | ₹260.00 / 500 g · ₹507.40/kg at 5 kg |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 13% | Pour 58–60°C; melting point 50–53°C | Inside 85°C | Shelf life 60 months (page) | "Formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish" | ₹325.00 / 500 g · ₹637.00/kg at 5 kg |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | Not published | Not published | Ask first | Not published | No adhesion statement | ₹450.00 / 1 kg · ₹424.80/kg at 5 kg |
Two things fall out at once. If your production load is above 10%, CSI 464 is out at stage 0 — its page states a 10% maximum. And in the Clear 150 g jar, CSI 464's 80–90°C page range is cut to 80–85°C by the jar's stated hot-pour limit; the thicker-glass post shows how narrow such windows get. CSI 468's 58–60°C pour sits far below the jar limit. Natural Soy Pearl cannot be placed until you have the maker's instructions; ask us on WhatsApp before including it.
Stages 1–3: three gates, in order of cost
Why this order? Stage 1 costs 3 jars per wax and gives an answer in a week; it eliminates the most. Stage 2 needs a wick ladder per wax — 9 jars each — so it should only run on survivors. Stage 3 takes the longest and depends on stage 2's passing wick. Run in this order, a weak wax costs you three jars, not fifteen. When to evaluate: immediately, at one week and after cycling and how many jars per wax refine the timing and the arm sizes.
Stage 4: the weighted score and the cost
Only survivors are scored. Weights express what your brand cares about most among waxes that already keep every promise, and they are yours — the example below suits a clear-glass, fragrance-led premium range. A frosted-jar brand would move weight from adhesion to throw; a gifting range shipped across India might move weight to climate. Write the weights before unblinding stage 1, and do not change them after you see the results.
| Criterion | Example weight | Score source | Survivor A (0–5) | Survivor B (0–5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glass adhesion | 30% | Stage 1 photos (mean grade, inverted) | _ | _ |
| Hot throw | 25% | Stage 2 blind panel | _ | _ |
| Burn quality | 20% | Stage 2 burn sheet | _ | _ |
| Indian climate stability | 15% | Stage 3 grade change | _ | _ |
| Frosting and tops | 10% | Stage 1 photos | _ | _ |
| Weighted total | 100% | Σ weight × score | _ | _ |
Then cost. Cost per visually acceptable candle = CSI material cost per candle ÷ (1 − reject rate), where the reject rate is the share of stage-1 to stage-3 jars that failed your appearance rule. It is the number that turns a cheaper wax with more rejects into a fair comparison with a dearer wax with fewer. The example below uses two unnamed waxes with example reject rates — CSI publishes no reject rate for any wax and we will not attach one to a named product; replace both rows with your own survivors' measured counts.
| Survivor | Priced as | CSI materials / candle | Reject rate | Per acceptable candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax X (example) | priced as Chunks at the 5 kg rate | ₹219.78 | 12% (example) | ₹249.75 |
| Wax Y (example) | priced as CSI 468 at the 5 kg rate | ₹225.02 | 3% (example) | ₹231.98 |
In this illustration the dearer wax per kilogram ends up cheaper per acceptable candle: ₹231.98 against ₹249.75. With your own reject counts the order may reverse. Labour, labels, discounts and complaint handling sharpen the comparison further; comparing Wax A and Wax B on cost per visually acceptable candle and the economics hub take it all the way.
The priced qualification kit
Stage 1 for the control and three CSI candidates, then stages 2 and 3 for two survivors. Grams use the CSI convention (oil = W × L) and a 5% pour-loss allowance. The Clear 150 g jar is planned in packs of 10 (the pack of 20 is in limited stock). Your control wax is not priced. Which two waxes survive changes the wax lines, so the total is a range.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | 39 jars | 4 × pack of 10 | ₹3,776.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · stage 1 | 434.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹299.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 · stage 1 | 434.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹260.00 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 · stage 1 | 434.7 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹325.00 |
| British Rose at 8% (all stages) | 491.4 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹1,593.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (example current wick) | 39 + 2 | 1 × pack of 50 | ₹295.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 + Cotton Braided (example ladder neighbours) | 10 each | 1 × 10 each | ₹214.40 |
| Wick stickers + IPA spray 150 ml | 39 stickers | 1 sheet of 40 + 1 spray | ₹483.00 |
| CSI subtotal before survivors' extra wax | ₹7,245.40 | ||
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · stages 2–3 if it survives | 1,738.8 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,198.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 · stages 2–3 if it survives | 1,738.8 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,014.80 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 · stages 2–3 if it survives | 1,738.8 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,300.00 |
| CSI total with two survivors | ₹9,458.20–₹9,743.40 |
Oil is the largest line: 491.4 g of British Rose, covered most cheaply by 1 × 500 g. If your production oil is different, use it — the kit is about the wax. Wick lines are examples; the neighbours in each ladder come from your own range, and no CSI wick is "equivalent" to another by rule. Non-CSI items — a min/max thermometer or data logger for your courier route, a chamber or a car for the warm hold — are yours and are not priced here.
How long it takes, and the festive calendar
With the example checkpoints, stage 1 needs its 7-day read before stage 2 can start; stage 2 needs a cure and several burn cycles per jar; stage 3 needs its cycles and a re-burn. Run back to back, that is roughly five to seven weeks, plus a seasonal batch that may take months to come round. With Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026, a wax chosen by this method today will not be in this year's festive pour — and should not be.
| Weeks from start | Stage | What you have at the end | Can you buy production wax yet? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Stage 0 desk screen | Candidates that fit your load, jar and packs | No |
| 0–1 | Stage 1 pour and 7-day read | Appearance survivors | No — buy 1 kg bags only |
| 1–4 | Stage 2 wick ladders and throw | A passing wick and throw score per survivor | No |
| 3–6 | Stage 3 warm hold, cycles, re-burn | Climate survivors | A 5 kg bag of the leader for a pilot |
| 6–7 | Stage 4 score and cost; pilot batch | One wax, one wick, one record | Yes — for the November–February wedding season |
Buying the winner
Once a wax wins, buy production quantities in the cheapest listed packs — computed, not assumed. For an example month of 500 candles, each with 138 g of wax and a 5% allowance, you need 72.45 kg of wax. The cheapest listed covers differ by wax, and two of the price quirks matter at this scale.
| Wax | Practical pack mix | Price | Strictly cheapest mix | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 14 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹43,427.00 | 145 × 500 g | ₹43,355.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹36,792.80 | 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹36,792.80 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹46,215.00 | 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹46,215.00 |
Chunks is cheapest per kg in the 500 g bag (₹598.00/kg) and slightly dearer in the 10 kg bag (₹599.90/kg) than in two 5 kg bags; CSI 464 is flat at ₹507.40/kg from 1 kg up; CSI 468 drops from ₹650.00/kg at 1 kg to ₹637.00/kg at 5 and 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only soy wax with a real bulk break (₹450.00 → ₹424.80/kg from 5 kg) but would need its own full qualification first. CSI publishes no volume discount beyond listed packs; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp. Keep a retained, numbered, unlit jar from every production lot — monitoring future wax and jar lots explains why.
The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do / buy |
|---|---|---|
| Your current wax passes every gate and scores within your margin of the best | No case for switching | Keep it. Buy nothing new; file the evidence |
| Only one candidate passes every gate | The choice is made by the gates | Pilot batch with a 5 kg bag; then production packs |
| Two or more pass every gate | A genuine choice | Pick the highest weighted score; break ties on cost per acceptable candle |
| A candidate fails only the climate gate | Not for your shipping routes | Out for courier SKUs; possibly fine for local sale — record it |
| Every wax fails the appearance gate in your hardest jar | The jar or process | Don't buy wax. Change the jar or fix the process first |
After the purchase, the winning wax becomes your control for the next decision: every future jar, oil, dye or lot change is tested against it with the same gates. Locking jar preparation, load, pour temperature and cooling and the series capstone carry the method into production.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. All three CSI container-wax pages claim excellent glass adhesion, so we cannot honestly rank them for you, and we publish no adhesion, frosting, throw, heat or reject data for any wax. This method is built so that your current wax can win — and when it does, the advice is to keep it.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Series default candle 150 g at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax) in the Clear 150 g jar. Illustrative: two stage-1 survivors; example weights; example reject rates for unnamed Waxes X and Y (priced as Chunks and CSI 468 only to show the arithmetic); example month of 500 candles. Working practices: 3 jars per arm, wick ladder of three per survivor, 5% pour loss, photo checkpoints at 48 h and 7 days plus cycles, example warm hold 40–45°C for 6 hours and cycles of 8 h warm / 16 h room for 3–5 cycles (replace with your logged route), burn cycles of about 3–4 hours. Wick lines are examples, not size recommendations. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), stir 2 minutes, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, and "excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces reduces wet spots and pull-away"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range, "excellent glass adhesion", single-pour, low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, "formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish"; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperature, cure or adhesion statement published. Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — thick-walled clear glass, approximately 150 g wax fill, about 8 cm tall with lid, rim about 7 cm, base about 6.5 cm, "safe for hot pour up to 85°C". All three wax pages make the same adhesion claim, so the claim cannot rank them. CSI publishes no adhesion, wet-spot, shrinkage, contraction or frosting data for any wax, oil, dye or jar, no glass thickness in millimetres, no internal jar diameters and no wick-size-per-jar chart; no industry acceptance threshold for wet spots exists. Mechanisms (wax contraction as it cools and crystallises, glass temperature, cooling rate, residues, temperature cycling, load and dye effects) are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as commonly described. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
