Quick answers — read this first
How do I find shared materials? Build a commonality matrix: SKUs as columns, materials as rows, a dot where an SKU uses a material. Count dots per row and add monthly spend.

Which ones should I negotiate? Materials used by half the range or more with real spend — here CSI 464 (12 of 12, 37% of spend), the White Matte jar and the Golden tin. Not single-scent oils.

How do I avoid dead stock? Commit to a floor volume (example: 85% of the average month), prefer monthly deliveries against a quarterly commitment, and keep single-SKU materials small and frequent.

Does CSI give bulk discounts? No discount figure is published, and most shared lines are listed flat. Quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp.
The short answer
Answer: Map every material against every SKU, rank by how many SKUs share it and by spend, and take only the high-commonality, high-spend lines into a quote request — committing to your floor volume.
Why: Shared stock is used by whichever SKU sells: only ₹1,649.05 of a month's CSI 464 depends on any one SKU here, against ₹2,250.00 for the biggest oil.
Method: Matrix → dot count → monthly spend → exposure per dependent SKU → standardise → floor commitment → quote. Standardise materials first.
The commonality matrix: which materials serve many SKUs Reader's example range: 6 scents × 2 formats (200 g White Matte jar, 85 g Golden tin) = 12 SKUs · dot = SKU uses the material Cherry jar Cherry tin Pear jar Pear tin Oud jar Oud tin Gard. jar Gard. tin Pom. jar Pom. tin Rasp. jar Rasp. tin CSI 464 wax 12/12 Wick stickers 12/12 White Matte jar 6/12 Eco Thick C2 6/12 Golden tin 6/12 Eco Thin C1 6/12 Red liquid dye 3/12 Japanese Cherry Blossom oil 2/12 Orchard Pear oil 2/12 Woody Oud oil 2/12 Gardenia oil 2/12 Pomegranate Splash oil 2/12 Spicy Raspberry oil 2/12 Rows with many dots are negotiation candidates: 70% of monthly CSI spend sits in materials used by 6 or more SKUs. Rows with two dots are single-scent oils: buy them small and often — they become dead stock the day one scent stops selling.
Twelve SKUs across the top, every purchased material down the side. CSI 464 and the wick stickers serve all twelve; the jar, the tin and each wick size serve six; the dye serves three; each oil serves two. The rows with many dots are where volume buying is safe and a quote is worth asking for; the rows with two dots are where dead stock comes from.
Straight answer
How do I identify raw materials that are shared across many candle SKUs so I can negotiate better bulk pricing without increasing dead stock?
Build a commonality matrix — SKUs across, materials down, a dot wherever an SKU uses a material — then rank materials by dot count and monthly spend, and take only the shared, high-spend lines into a quote request. In this page's 12-SKU example (six scents in a 200 g White Matte jar and an 85 g Golden tin, all in CSI 464), CSI 464 and wick stickers serve 12 of 12 SKUs, the jar, the tin and each Eco wick size serve 6, and each oil serves only 2. Materials used by six or more SKUs are 70% of the ₹53,496.84 monthly CSI spend. Shared stock is safe in volume because any selling SKU uses it — only ₹1,649.05 of a month's wax depends on any single SKU. Commit to your floor volume (example: 85% of an average month — about 99.12 kg of CSI 464 a quarter), prefer monthly deliveries against a quarterly commitment, and keep oils small and frequent. CSI publishes no volume discount; most shared lines are listed flat, and quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp.
One line: count SKUs per material, weight by spend, negotiate only the shared lines, and commit to your floor — not your forecast.
In this page's 12-SKU example, six materials serve six or more SKUs and carry 70% of the monthly CSI spend (₹37,700.00 of ₹53,496.84): CSI 464 wax, wick stickers, the White Matte jar, the Golden tin and the two Eco wick sizes. Those are the lines worth a volume conversation; the six oils, each used by two SKUs, are not. Start with the material every SKU uses: CSI 464, flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg.

Count SKUs per material, weight by spend, negotiate only the shared lines

A material used by every SKU only becomes dead stock if every SKU stops selling.

Dead stock comes from one place: something you bought that no remaining product uses. A container wax that every candle in your range is poured in cannot become dead stock unless the whole range stops. A fragrance oil used in one scent becomes dead stock the week that scent is dropped. That asymmetry is the whole method. Count how many SKUs use each material, multiply by what you spend on it, and you have a ranked list of where volume buying is safe. The top of the list — shared, high-spend materials — is where a bulk price is worth asking for, because the extra stock will be used by whichever SKU sells. The bottom — single-SKU, low-spend materials — is where you buy small and often, whatever the price ladder says.

Before the method, one plain statement about pricing. CSI publishes no volume-discount figure. The listed packs are the only published price breaks — and for the shared materials in this example most are flat: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo in 1, 5 and 10 kg bags, White Matte jars are ₹70.80 each in fives and tens, Eco wicks are ₹5.90 (Thin C1) and ₹9.44 (Thick C2) in every pack. Quantities beyond the listed packs — wax beyond 10 kg bags, jars beyond the pack of 10 — are quoted on WhatsApp. So "negotiating" here means bringing CSI a clear, committed volume for a few shared materials and asking for a quote; this page shows how to build that volume without creating dead stock.

The CSI principle
Negotiate the materials many SKUs share. Buy the materials one SKU uses small and often.
Commonality protects you against dead stock; spend tells you where a better price would matter. You need both before asking for a quote.

Build the commonality matrix

The example range is twelve SKUs: six scents, each sold as a 200 g candle in the White Matte Glass Jar (the reader's weighed fill — CSI does not publish this jar's fill) and as an 85 g candle in the Golden Aluminium Tin (CSI's published fill). All twelve are poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8%. Burn tests approved Eco Thick C2 for the jar and Eco Thin C1 for the tin — the reader's own results; CSI publishes no wick-size chart. Three SKUs are coloured with red liquid dye. Monthly sales are the reader's examples: 150 jars and 120 tins.

1
List every SKU as a columnOne column per sellable product: scent × format. Here, twelve.
2
List every purchased material as a rowWax, each jar or tin, each wick size, stickers, each dye, each oil. Ignore tools; they are not consumed per candle.
3
Mark a dot where an SKU uses a materialThe diagram above is the result for this range. Count the dots in each row: that is the material's commonality.
4
Add monthly quantity and spendUse each SKU's monthly volume and the BOM — the same arithmetic as combining 20 SKUs into one wax requirement — then price the month's need in real CSI packs.
5
Rank by commonality, then by spendMaterials used by half the range or more, with meaningful spend, go to the top. Single-scent oils go to the bottom whatever their spend.
6
Compute dead-stock exposureMonthly spend ÷ SKUs using it: the rupees of stock that depend on each individual SKU continuing to sell. The lower it is, the safer the material is to hold in volume.

Spicy Raspberry 2 of 12 239.6 g 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g ₹1,497.00 2.8% ₹748.50
Total ₹53,496.84 100%

The ranking is stark. Materials used by six or more SKUs account for 70% of the monthly CSI spend (₹37,700.00); the six oils and the dye together account for 30%. CSI 464 alone is 37% of the spend, and because all twelve SKUs depend on it, only ₹1,649.05 of its monthly stock rides on any single SKU. Japanese Cherry Blossom, the biggest oil, has ₹2,250.00 riding on each of its two SKUs. That is why the wax is the first line to negotiate and the oils are the last.

The common error: negotiating on the biggest single-SKU item. Makers often ask for a better price on their best-selling scent because it is the largest oil line. But it is still one scent: if tastes shift, every extra bottle bought for a discount is exposed. Fix: rank by commonality first. A discount on a shared wax is safe at any volume your range uses; a discount on one oil is only safe up to the volume that one scent reliably sells.

Raise commonality before you negotiate

Commonality is not fixed; it is a design choice. This range uses 13 distinct materials, an average of 4.8 SKUs per material. If one wick could serve both the jar and the tin, the range would drop to 12 materials and the average would rise to 5.2 SKUs per material — more volume on fewer lines, a stronger case for a quote, and less dead-stock risk. The catch is that a wick change voids burn tests. Whether one Eco size works in both containers is a test question, not a purchasing one: CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart.

Standardisation moves · each one must pass your own tests first
Ways to concentrate volume on fewer materials
Move Effect on commonality What it risks Test before buying volume
One container wax for every format Already done here — 12 of 12 Nothing new —
One wick size across jar and tin Two 6-SKU rows become one 12-SKU row Pool too narrow in the jar or too hot in the tin Eco Thin C1 20-pack + Thick C2 10-pack, ₹212.40
One jar across all 200 g SKUs Already done — White Matte for all six — —
Drop the dye or use it across more SKUs A 3-SKU row disappears or grows Changes the look of the range Colour trials in the smallest dye size
Fewer, broader scents Each oil row gains SKUs (more formats per scent) Less choice for customers Sales data, not lab tests

These moves are covered in detail by standardising wax, jars, wicks and dyes across 10 SKUs and how much inventory complexity one wax, one jar and a small wick range removes. The point here is narrower: every move that raises a row's dot count makes that material safer to buy in volume, and every move that lowers it makes a volume deal riskier.

What to ask for, and how much to commit

Commit to your floor, not your forecast.

When you ask for a quote on a shared material, the volume you commit to is the dead-stock lever. Commit to the forecast and a slow quarter leaves you holding the difference. Commit to a floor — the volume you are confident of even in a weak period — and the risk shrinks to almost nothing for a shared line. This page uses an example floor of 85% of the average month; use your own lowest recent month instead if you have it. On that basis the commitments for a quarter are about 99.12 kg of CSI 464, 395 White Matte jars and 314 Golden tins.

Example floor = 85% of the average month · CSI publishes no discount figure — anything below listed prices is by WhatsApp quote
The negotiation pack for shared materials

CSI 464 12 of 12 38.87 kg 99.12 kg (85% of 3 months) 466 kg Listed flat at ₹507.40/kg to 10 kg; bags beyond 10 kg and any lower rate by WhatsApp quote
White Matte jar 6 of 12 155 395 jars 1,860 jars Listed flat at ₹70.80 in 5s and 10s
Golden tin 6 of 12 123 314 tins 1,476 tins Listed at ₹360.00 per 12 (₹30.00 each)
Eco wicks (both) 12 of 12 (two sizes) 154 + 123 — 3,324 Flat ₹9.44 / ₹5.90 at every pack; 500 and 1,000 packs listed

Ask about structure as well as price. A committed quarterly volume taken in monthly deliveries keeps cash and shelf space free while giving the supplier the volume certainty that justifies a quote — ask CSI on WhatsApp whether that arrangement is possible for your lines; it is not a published offer. Bring the matrix: material, SKUs using it, monthly need, the floor commitment and the pack sizes you want. A clear request is easier to price than "can I get a discount?".

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Most of the shared materials in this example are listed at flat prices, and we publish no volume discount. If you buy CSI 464 in 10 kg bags today you already pay the same ₹507.40 a kilo as you would in larger quantities from the listing. Ask us for a quote on genuine volume beyond the listed packs — but do not pre-buy months of wax or jars in the hope of a discount that is not published. Buy monthly until you have a quote in writing.
Keep oils out of the bulk conversation
Even the best-selling oil in this range is used by only two SKUs. Buy oils at the size that one month (or one quarter, if the return-on-cash test says so) actually uses, and let their own price ladders do what they can. Choosing 500 g or 1 kg for a 1.3 kg need shows how much those ladders differ.

This month's consolidated order

Until a quote changes anything, the right purchase is the monthly order at listed prices, bought in the cheapest real packs. Here it is in full — ₹53,496.84 of CSI materials for 270 candles, before labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Keeping shared stock from turning dead

Review the matrix every quarter, and immediately when you drop or add a SKU. Dropping a SKU removes dots: a material can fall from "shared by six" to "shared by three" without anyone noticing, and the volume commitment that was safe last quarter is no longer safe. Adding a SKU that reuses existing materials is the cheapest growth there is, because it raises commonality without adding a row. Safety stock by material role uses the same commonality idea to size buffers, and the reorder sheet carries the SKU count as a column so a falling count is visible.

Finally, keep the bulk decision and the stock decision separate. A quote can improve the price of a shared material; it does not change how much you need. Order quantities still come from monthly sales converted into requirements and one consolidated monthly order, with per-material reorder points deciding when.

The safest stock to buy in volume is the stock every candle uses. The riskiest is the oil only one candle uses — however cheap it looks.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We publish no volume discount and say so on this page. We also tell you not to pre-buy months of our flat-priced wax and jars in the hope of one, and to keep oils — even your best seller — out of a bulk deal.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026; jar, tin, wick and sticker prices were re-checked 4 October 2026. Frequently asked questions

What is a commonality matrix for candle making?
A grid with your SKUs as columns and purchased materials as rows, marking which SKU uses which material. The number of SKUs per material shows where volume buying is safe.
Which candle raw materials are safest to buy in bulk?
The ones every or most SKUs use — usually the container wax, the main jar or tin, and the main wick — provided they have a real price advantage at volume. Single-scent oils are the riskiest.
How do I negotiate a bulk price with a candle supply company?
Bring a clear request: the shared material, the SKUs that use it, monthly need, a floor volume you can commit to, and the pack sizes and delivery pattern you want. At CSI, ask on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
How much should I commit to in a bulk deal?
Your floor, not your forecast — the volume you are confident of in a weak period. This page uses 85% of the average month as an example; your lowest recent month is better.
Does standardising wicks across jars reduce inventory?
It can turn two six-SKU rows into one twelve-SKU row. But a wick change voids burn tests, and CSI publishes no wick-size chart — test both containers before buying volume.
Are CSI's jar and wax prices lower in bigger packs?
For most shared lines, no: CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg from 1 to 10 kg and White Matte jars are ₹70.80 each in 5s and 10s. Natural Soy Pearl, Mini Glass Jars and Salsa jars do have listed breaks.

They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: load is a share of finished weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). The Golden tin's 85 g fill is CSI's published figure; the 200 g White Matte fill is the reader's. Wick choices are the reader's burn-test results; dye dose follows the dye's page. Volumes, allowances, the 85% floor and lid and label prices are labelled examples. CSI's page for CSI 464 states up to 10% fragrance and a 60-month shelf life. CSI publishes no lead times, delivery times, minimum order quantities, volume-discount figures, jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), wick-size-per-diameter charts, throw data or shelf-life figures for its oils. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
