How do I match a fragrance oil to a wax and a load? Read both stated maximums and take the lower one. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13%; each oil page states its own candle range. Governing ceiling is the lower figure, and your working load sits two percentage points below it so you have somewhere to go.

What is the minimum cure before a candle can be sold? Burn-test no earlier than 48 hours — several CSI oil pages give 48–72 hours for soy — and judge throw at day 14. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks. Heavy gourmand, vanilla and woody scents get a second look at day 21.

What has to pass before a candle goes on sale? Nine checks: load inside both ceilings, weights to 0.1 g, temperatures inside the wax and jar windows, a clean surface at 48 hours, a pool to the wall on the first burn, no tunnelling on the second, two independent noses on day 14, a 48-hour hold at 35°C without seepage, and a complete record with documentation and retained samples.

How do I professionally match fragrance oil, wax, load and cure before selling a candle?
In a fixed order, with numbers written down, and with a gate at the end that can say no. The jar comes first because fill capacity sets the pour weight: a 150 g jar is 139 g of wax plus 11.1 g of oil at 8%, not 200 g of anything. The wax comes second and brings a stated maximum — CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%. The oil comes third and brings its own published candle range. The load comes fourth, and it is not a choice you make freely: the governing ceiling is the lower of the two stated figures, and a professional working load sits about two percentage points under it, so that a weak batch has somewhere to go and a strong one has nothing to prove. Then the wick, then the temperatures — fragrance in at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir on CSI’s soy pages, poured inside both the wax window and any limit the jar page states — and then the cure: 48 hours for faults, day 3 for the pool, day 14 for throw, day 21 for heavy gourmands. Nine checks then decide whether it goes on sale, including a 48-hour hold at 35°C that catches the loads a stated ceiling will happily let you pour. One line of frozen text, one record sheet, two retained samples per batch. The four variables, and the only order that works

Most candles that fail were designed backwards: a load was chosen first, and everything else was bent to fit it.

Oil, wax, load and cure are not four independent settings. Each one narrows the next, and the narrowing runs in one direction only. Choose the load first and you will find yourself either above a stated maximum or below what the oil needs. Choose the jar last and you will be weighing 200 g of wax into a 150 g container. The order below is the whole of this page in four lines, and the rest is detail.

The container decides grams. A jar has a fill capacity, and it is the total that goes in — wax plus oil. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page states a 150 g fill capacity, 8 cm height and hot-pour safe to 85°C. At a load of 8% of wax weight that is 139 g of wax and 11.1 g of oil, which is 150 g in the jar. Work the other way and you will overfill, which shows up as wax on the rim, a lid that will not seat and a candle that cannot be shipped.

The wax decides the outer limit. Every CSI soy page that publishes a fragrance figure states it as a percentage of total wax weight, and it is the wax manufacturer’s stated formulation maximum, not a suggestion to reach. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 both state up to 13%, and the Chunks page adds that 8% is a starting point, 10% is the recommended figure and 13% is the maximum, to be burn-tested thoroughly. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling at all — ask on WhatsApp before you build a SKU around it, and until you have an answer work to the oil page’s lower bound.

The oil decides the inner limit, and the cure. The British Rose page states soy up to 10%, a flashpoint of 192°C, 0% vanillin and a cure of 48 to 72 hours for best scent throw. The Cinnamon Vanilla page states up to 13% of total wax weight, a flashpoint of 132°C, 2.5% vanillin, and — in its own words — that this is a higher-capacity oil to be tested at the lower end before committing to full production loads. Those sentences are the specification you are formulating against. Where a page does not publish a range, it is not a figure to estimate.

The load is what is left. It is the lower of the two stated maximums, minus a working margin. Nothing about that sentence is about how strong you want the candle to smell, which is the point: strength is bought with wick, pool, cure and oil choice long before it is bought with another two percent of load.

Starting from “I want 10%”. Ten per cent is inside the CSI 464 stated maximum and inside the British Rose stated range, so on those two pages it is defensible. Put the same 10% against Fresh Strawberries, whose page states 6–9% of total wax weight, and you are outside the oil’s own published range with no way to describe what you did to a corporate buyer. The load is an output of two pages, never an input.

Two ceilings, one governs — and a ceiling is permission, not a target

The lower of the two stated figures is your limit. The figure you actually pour should be lower again.

Every load decision in this series is a percentage of wax weight, because that is how CSI’s pages state it. Two documents constrain it: the wax page and the oil page. When they disagree, the lower figure governs, and you say so in your own records so that the decision can be explained a year later.

The working margin is the part most makers skip, so it is worth being explicit about what it buys. Pouring at 8% under a 10% ceiling means that if day-14 throw is marginal, you have a move available that costs nothing to justify: go to 9%, or 10%, with the same oil and the same paperwork. Pour at the ceiling on day one and every remaining move is a change of oil, wick or wax — which means a fresh approval, fresh samples and another two to three weeks of calendar. The margin is not caution. It is an option you are buying for about ₹245.44 of British Rose per kilogram of wax at 8%, rather than the higher figure at 10%.

WRITE THE GOVERNING FIGURE DOWN
On the record sheet, log three numbers, not one: the wax page maximum, the oil page range, and the load you poured. A corporate or wedding buyer who asks how you set your fragrance load is not asking for a percentage — they are asking whether you had a reason. Three figures and a sentence answer it, and MSDS and IFRA documentation is available from CSI on WhatsApp to sit behind them.

The formula builder: nine decisions that fit on one line

A formula you cannot write on one line is a formula you cannot repeat.

The diagram at the top of this page is this section. Work down it once per SKU, in order, and stop at every step where you cannot fill in a figure from a product page, a scale or a thermometer. A gap is not a detail to sort out during the pour; it is the thing that will make batch four different from batch one.

Fix the container and read its limits. Fill capacity in grams, height, and any pour-temperature figure the page publishes. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page states 150 g fill and hot-pour safe to 85°C; the Black Glass Jar with Black Lid page states about 150 g fill, 8 cm height and roughly a 7 cm outer rim. Where a jar page does not state a pour limit, treat the wax page window as your only guide and measure your own inside diameter before you size a wick.

Choose the wax grade and log its stated maximum. CSI 464 up to 10%, a single-pour flake wax with 80–90°C given as its working range for melting and pouring. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, melt to about 80–85°C, fragrance in at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, pour at 75–80°C. CSI 468 up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour at 58–60°C. Write the figure you will be held to.

Choose the oil and log its range, flashpoint and vanillin. Four facts from the page: candle usage range, flashpoint, vanillin content and any cure note. Flashpoint is a transport, storage and handling property — it is not the temperature at which fragrance burns off, and the 80–90°C add window sits below every flashpoint quoted here. For the low ones on CSI’s list, such as Palo Santo at 93°C or Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C, add at the lower end of the window.

Take the governing ceiling and set the working load under it. Lower of the two stated figures, minus about two percentage points. Then convert to grams against the jar: at 8% a 150 g jar is 139 g of wax and 11.1 g of oil; at 10% it is 136 g and 13.6 g; a 70 g votive at 8% is 65 g and 5.2 g. Weigh to 0.1 g — a Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00, and stock on it is low, so a kitchen scale that reads 0.1 g will do.

Pick a starting wick and plan the ladder. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each are the working pair for jars of this size; Performance Wooden Wicks and Cotton Braided Wicks cover crackle and large diameters. CSI does not publish wick sizes by jar diameter, so this is a test, not a lookup — start at C1 and keep C2 candles from the same melt so the ladder is one variable wide.

Set the temperatures and write them on the sheet before you melt. Add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, ambient temperature. For CSI 464 in the Clear Glass Jar, the wax page gives 80–90°C as the working range and the jar page states hot-pour safe to 85°C, so the overlap is 80–85°C and that is your pour band. Record the ambient reading too: the same formula poured at 22°C in a Delhi December and 34°C in a Mumbai July sets differently.

Pour, cap, and label every jar with the formula. Batch code, pour date, wax grade and lot, oil and lot, load, wick, temperatures. Six candles per SKU: three go into the gate, three are sealed and kept as retained samples so that batch nine can be smelled against batch one.

Run the cure clock by date, not by feel. 48 hours for faults. Day 3 for the first burn and the pool. A 48-hour hold at 35°C for the heat check. Day 14 for the second burn and the two-nose throw check. Day 21 for heavy gourmand, vanilla-led and woody scents. Dates go on the sheet in advance, which is how a cure survives a busy festive week.

Freeze the line, and change one thing at a time afterwards. The output of all of this is a single string: CSI 464 / 139 g · British Rose / 11.1 g · 8% · C1 · add 85°C · pour 80–85°C · cure 14 d. That line is the product. It goes on the record sheet, in the costing, and on the message you send CSI when you reorder.

The value of the one-line form is not tidiness. It is that a formula written as a line makes a change visible. When batch six smells different from batch one, you compare two lines and find the difference in ten seconds — a 500 g pack instead of a 1 kg pack, a C2 instead of a C1, a pour at 88°C because the melter was left on. When the formula lives in your head, the comparison is impossible and the usual conclusion is that the oil has changed.

The cure schedule: 48 hours, 14 days, 21 days — and what each one is allowed to tell you

Every checkpoint answers one question. The mistake is asking a 48-hour candle about hot throw.

CSI’s oil pages and wax pages are talking about two different things, and reading them as one contradiction is what leads makers to sell too early. Several oil pages — British Rose and Roasted Coffee among them — give a soy cure of 48 to 72 hours. That is the point at which a candle can be lit and inspected without the result being meaningless. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. Neither is wrong: 48 hours is the earliest useful reading, and throw in soy keeps developing after it. The working assumption for judging throw on a soy container candle is 14 days, and 21 days for the heavy end.

The same clock against the festive calendar. A production pour finished by 15 October clears a 14-day cure on 29 October and a 21-day cure on 5 November, ahead of Diwali on 8 November 2026 — which is why an approval batch has to be poured in September, not October.

The 35°C hold deserves its own paragraph, because it is the check that a stated ceiling cannot protect you from. A load can sit inside both published maximums and still push oil out of the wax when a candle spends a week in a Nagpur or Ahmedabad storeroom, or two days in a delivery van. Soy holds a finite amount of fragrance in solution; heat reduces it. Holding three candles at about 35°C for 48 hours and looking at the wax-to-glass line is a cheap, honest proxy for a summer despatch, and it is the check that failed on one of the three worked SKUs below.

Judging throw on the same evening as the pool. A day-3 burn tells you the truth about the wick and almost nothing about the fragrance, so a maker who judges both at once usually up-sizes the wick to fix a throw problem that cure would have fixed for free — and then carries a hotter, faster candle with a shorter burn life through the whole range. Read the pool at day 3 and the throw at day 14, on separate sheets, in that order.

The approval gate: nine checks, all of which must pass

A gate that has never rejected anything is not a gate. It is a form.

Three candles from the approval batch go through this. Every check has a threshold you can write down before you start, and every fail has a named action. There is no “pass with a note”, because a note is what a busy October turns into a customer complaint in December.

How to read the gate. All nine pass, or the SKU does not go on sale. A fail on checks 1 to 4 invalidates the whole batch, because those are pour-time faults; a fail on 5 to 8 costs you a wick step or a load step and a fresh cure clock. Checks 7 and 8 are the two that argue with each other — throw wants more load, heat wants less — and the honest resolution is almost always to fix throw with the wick, the pool and the cure first, and only then to spend load on it. Check 9 is the one makers resent and corporate buyers ask about first.

The sheet is not paperwork. It is the only thing that makes batch nine the same product as batch one.

One sheet per batch, filled in as you go rather than afterwards. It takes about four minutes. The fields below are the minimum that lets you answer three questions later: what exactly did we pour, why was the load set there, and what did it do on each date.

Two fields earn their place more than the rest. Ambient temperature, because it is the variable that changes without anyone deciding to change it — the same formula behaves differently in a 34°C Mumbai July workroom and a 20°C Delhi January one, and without the reading you will blame the oil. And retained samples, because a nose cannot remember a smell across three months but it can compare two jars in ten seconds. Two sealed jars per batch, stored in the dark, is the cheapest quality control in candle making.

ONE SHEET, ONE PHOTOGRAPH
Photograph the finished candle on day 0 next to the sheet, in daylight, against a white background. When a vanillin-carrying oil tones the wax over six weeks — the Cinnamon Vanilla page states 2.5% vanillin and advises planning for ivory or warm-toned wax — that photograph is how you tell expected, cosmetic yellowing from a batch that has actually gone wrong, and how you show a customer the difference.

A worked range: three SKUs from blank sheet to on-sale

Three formulas, one of which failed the gate. That is a normal approval, not a bad one.

SKU A — the everyday 150 g rose jar

Container: Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, page states 150 g fill, 8 cm height, hot-pour safe to 85°C, ₹94.40 each at the pack of 10. Wax: CSI 464, stated maximum 10%, working range 80–90°C for melting and pouring. Oil: British Rose, page states soy up to 10%, flashpoint 192°C, 0% vanillin, cure 48–72 hours. Governing ceiling 10%, working load 8%. That is 139 g of wax and 11.1 g of oil: ₹70.53 of wax, ₹34.05 of oil, ₹5.90 for an Eco C1 wick and ₹94.40 for the jar — ₹204.88 a candle. Pour band 80–85°C, the overlap of the wax window and the jar limit.

Gate result: all nine passed on the first attempt. The 0% vanillin figure on the page means no yellowing to explain, which is why this SKU is the one to photograph for the shop. At day 14 both noses marked it clearly noticeable at two hours, and the 35°C hold showed a level surface and a clean wax-to-glass line. SKU B — the festive 150 g cinnamon vanilla jar, and the round that failed

Container: Black Glass Jar with Black Lid, page states about 150 g fill, 8 cm height, roughly 7 cm outer rim, ₹107.00 each at the pack of 10; the page does not publish a pour-temperature limit, so the wax window governed and we asked on WhatsApp before scaling. Wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, stated maximum 13%, melt to about 80–85°C, fragrance in at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, pour at 75–80°C. Oil: Cinnamon Vanilla, page states up to 13% of total wax weight, flashpoint 132°C, 2.5% vanillin.

Both documents allowed 13%, so the first round was poured there: 133 g of wax and 17.2 g of oil — ₹79.67 of wax and ₹78.34 of oil, ₹270.91 a candle. Checks 1 to 6 passed. Check 8 did not: after 48 hours at about 35°C, two of the three candles showed beading at the wax-to-glass line. This is exactly the case the Cinnamon Vanilla page itself warns about when it calls this a higher-capacity oil to be tested at the lower end before committing to full production loads. The ceiling gave permission; the candle did not.

The second round dropped to 10%: 136 g of wax and 13.6 g of oil — ₹81.46 and ₹61.95, ₹256.31 a candle, ₹14.60 a candle cheaper than the version that failed. All nine checks passed, including the heat hold, and the day-14 throw was scored clearly noticeable by both noses, which is the part worth sitting with: three points of load bought no throw and cost ₹14.60 a candle plus a fortnight. Expected yellowing on white wax was recorded against the day-0 photograph and written into the product description as a characteristic of the scent rather than a defect. Frozen line: Chunks / 136 g · Cinnamon Vanilla / 13.6 g · 10% · C1 · add 85°C · pour 78°C · cure 21 d — 21 days, because this is the heavy end.

SKU C — the 70 g coffee votive for discovery sets

Container: White Matte Votive Jar 70 gram, 70 g fill, ₹31.86 each at the pack of 10. Wax: CSI 464, maximum 10%. Oil: Roasted Coffee, page states soy 6–10%, flashpoint approximately 191–193°C, vanillin in the vanilla and caramel base, cure 48–72 hours. Governing ceiling 10%, working load 8%: 65 g of wax and 5.2 g of oil — ₹32.98 and ₹19.44, ₹90.18 a candle. All nine checks passed, with one note on the sheet: at 70 g the burn life is short enough that the care card matters more than usual, and Candle Care Stickers at ₹413.00 for 500 cover it.

Approving at the ceiling because the ceiling allowed it. SKU B is the whole lesson of this page in one batch. Two product pages permitted 13%, the candle looked correct at 48 hours and burned correctly at day 3, and it still failed a 48-hour hold at 35°C — the one condition that an Indian storeroom or a delivery van guarantees. Had that round gone straight to production, ₹27,090.96 of stock would have been poured at a load the summer would have found for us, in front of customers.

What forces a re-approval, and what does not

The formula is frozen. The world around it is not.

Once a line is approved, the discipline is to change one thing at a time and to know which checks that change re-opens. Most changes do not need the whole gate again; two of them do. The table is the honest version of “we improved the packaging” — some improvements are formula changes wearing a different word.

Changing two things and calling it one improvement. A new 5 kg pack of wax and a new wick arriving the same week is two changes; if the next batch is worse you cannot say which. Keep one approved line running while you test the other, pour both from the same melt where the change allows it, and let the retained samples arbitrate. This is slower for one week and faster for a year.

What the gate costs, and what skipping it costs

The gate is the cheapest line on the invoice and the only one that is optional.

Six candles per SKU. Three through the gate, three sealed. For the three worked SKUs that is ₹3,308.23, and with the failed 13% round included, ₹4,933.69. Set that against a production run of a hundred of each, ₹55,137.13: the full approval, failure and all, is under 9% of the run it protects, and it is paid once for a line you may pour for two years.

The rework line is the one worth reading twice. Re-pouring a hundred SKU B candles is ₹25,630.93 in materials alone, and that is the easy part — two CSI reviewers say plainly that shipping charges are high, and replacement freight on a hundred jars is paid twice, once out and once back. Add the fourteen to twenty-one days of cure you no longer have in a festive window, and a fail found after launch costs several times a fail found on six candles.

Against CSI’s own interest, two things are worth saying plainly. The gate usually points at a lower load, not a higher one. Of the three SKUs above, the one that changed came down from 13% to 10%, which means less oil per candle and a smaller reorder — and a reviewer of British Rose says the same thing from the other side, that you can go for the minimum percentage and still get the smell. And you do not need new materials to run a gate. Six candles, a scale that reads 0.1 g, a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00, a warm cupboard and a written sheet is the entire apparatus. Everything else this series has recommended is optional next to those five things.

Frequently asked questions

Which figure governs when the wax and the oil disagree on fragrance load?
The lower one, always, and both should be written on your batch sheet next to what you actually poured. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% and Roasted Coffee states soy 6–10%, so that pairing governs at 10% and a sensible working load is 8%. Where a wax does not publish a ceiling, such as Eco Soy CSI 400, treat the oil page as your only document, work low and ask on WhatsApp.
Can I sell a soy candle after 48 hours?
You can burn one after 48 hours — several CSI oil pages give 48–72 hours for soy — but 48 hours only tells you about surface faults and cold throw. Judge hot throw at day 14, and give vanilla-led, gourmand and woody scents until day 21. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing.
How do I test whether my load will survive an Indian summer?
Hold three candles at about 35°C for 48 hours — a closed upstairs room in May, or a warm cupboard — and look at the wax-to-glass line for beading or seepage. A load can sit inside both stated ceilings and still fail this. It is the check that sent SKU B on this page from 13% back to 10%, saving ₹14.60 a candle in the process.
How many candles does a proper approval batch need?
Six per SKU: three through the nine checks and three sealed as retained samples so future batches have something to be compared against. For the three worked SKUs here that is ₹3,308.23, against ₹55,137.13 of production — under 9%, paid once.
What does a corporate or wedding buyer actually ask for?
Three things, in our experience of what makers are asked to forward: the fragrance load and why it was set there, documentation for the oil, and evidence that the batch they are buying is the batch that was tested. The record sheet answers all three, and MSDS and IFRA documentation is available from CSI on WhatsApp. Note that the correct phrasing for an oil is that the product page states IFRA certification — not that you have certified anything yourself.
Do I have to re-approve a formula when a new lot of the same oil arrives?
Not fully. Smell the new lot against your retained sample, pour one candle at the approved line, and re-run the 48-hour surface check, the day-14 throw check and the 35°C hold. A full re-approval is needed when the wax grade changes, or when a scent with the same name comes from a different supplier — that is a different oil with a different page behind it.
