Load to grams, grams to rupees, and the pack-size arithmetic that decides whether a scent line costs you ₹49.09 or ₹100.69 on exactly the same candle.
₹49.09
16 g of British Rose at 1 kg pricing — 8% of a 200 g wax fill · ₹100.69 at 15 gm pricing · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate fragrance oil cost per candle? Oil grams = wax grams × load, then multiply by the pack's per-gram rate. A 200 g wax fill at 8% takes 16 g; British Rose at ₹3.07 a gram (1 kg pack) makes that ₹49.09. The same 16 g from a 15 gm pack is ₹100.69.

Is the fragrance load a percentage of the wax or of the finished candle? On CSI's pages it is a percentage of wax weight. So 200 g of wax at 8% takes 16 g of oil and the finished candle weighs 216 g. If you work from a 200 g finished fill instead, the same 8% is about 14.8 g — ₹3.64 less on British Rose, and worth being consistent about.

How much does fragrance add to a candle? At 8% of a 200 g wax fill, between ₹45.31 for Citrus Lemon and ₹122.34 for Vanilla Bean at 1 kg rates. Against ₹101.48 of CSI 464 wax, that is roughly a third to more than half of the wax line again.

Does buying a 1 kg fragrance pack make each candle cheaper? Yes, and by more than wax does. On British Rose the per-gram rate falls from ₹6.29 (15 gm) to ₹3.07 (1 kg), so a 16 g dose drops from ₹100.69 to ₹49.09 — ₹51.61 a candle, ₹2,580.27 over fifty. The risk is holding a kilo of a scent that does not sell.
The short answer
Grams first: oil grams = wax grams × load. A 200 g wax fill at 6, 8 and 10% takes 12 g, 16 g and 20 g.
Then the pack rate: British Rose runs ₹6.29 a gram at 15 gm and ₹3.07 at 1 kg, so the same 16 g is ₹100.69 or ₹49.09.
Then the lower ceiling: the wax page's maximum and the oil page's range both apply and the lower one governs — which is what caps the line, not your budget.

One 200 g wax fill at an 8% load — 16 g of British Rose Fragrance Oil — priced from each live pack size. Nothing about the candle changes between the bars. Wax, wick, vessel and packaging are excluded; this page costs the fragrance line alone.
Straight answer
What does the fragrance in one candle actually cost?
Three numbers decide it, and only one of them is about the scent. One: grams. CSI's pages state loads as a percentage of wax weight, so a 200 g wax fill takes 12 g at 6%, 16 g at 8% and 20 g at 10%. Two: the per-gram rate of the pack you bought — not of the scent. British Rose is ₹6.29 a gram in the 15 gm bottle and ₹3.07 in the kilo, so the identical 16 g dose is ₹100.69 or ₹49.09. Three: the lower of the two ceilings. The wax page's maximum (CSI 464 up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%) and the oil page's stated candle range both apply, and the lower figure governs — Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%, so 9% is your cap in a 13% wax. Across the catalogue at 8% of a 200 g fill, the fragrance line runs from ₹45.31 to ₹384.90 a candle. Add a stated wastage allowance for what stays in the beaker, and that is the whole method.
One line: Oil grams = wax grams × load; cost = grams × the per-gram rate of the pack you actually bought, capped by the lower of the two stated ceilings.
Costing a scented range? The only number the store fixes is the per-gram rate of the pack you buy. Citrus Lemon is ₹2.83/g at 1 kg, British Rose ₹3.07/g, Roasted Coffee ₹3.74/g, Lavender ₹5.22/g and Vanilla Bean ₹7.65/g. Every figure below is built from rates like those.

Grams before rupees: turning a load into a weight

Nobody buys a percentage. You buy grams, and the percentage only tells you how many.

CSI's wax and oil pages both state fragrance loads as a percentage of total wax weight. The arithmetic that follows is deliberately dull: oil grams = wax grams × load. Two hundred grams of wax at 8% takes 16 g of oil, and the finished candle weighs 216 g. If instead you start from a finished weight — a jar you sell as a 200 g candle — the wax is 200 ÷ 1.08 and the oil is about 14.8 g. Both are defensible; mixing them inside one sheet is not.

Write the convention at the top of your recipe card and again at the top of your cost sheet. The gap between the two readings of "8% of a 200 g candle" is only about 1.2 g of oil, which is ₹3.64 on British Rose and ₹9.06 on Vanilla Bean — invisible on one candle, and the reason a kilo runs out three weeks early on a range that pours 500 candles a month.

Oil grams
Grams of fragrance oil per candle, by wax weight and load (load as a percentage of wax weight)
Wax in the jar 6% 8% 10% 13% (only where both pages allow it)
70 g votive 4.2 g 5.6 g 7.0 g 9.1 g
100 g 6.0 g 8.0 g 10.0 g 13.0 g
150 g 9.0 g 12.0 g 15.0 g 19.5 g
200 g 12.0 g 16.0 g 20.0 g 26.0 g
250 g 15.0 g 20.0 g 25.0 g 32.5 g
1 kg batch of wax 60 g 80 g 100 g 130 g

That last row is the one to keep near your melter. Every kilo of wax you melt needs 80 g of oil at 8% — so a 1 kg pack of fragrance covers 12.5 kg of wax, which on CSI 464 is about 62 candles of 200 g. Buy your oil packs against wax kilos, not against a feeling about how often you reach for a bottle.

Measuring oil by volume instead of by weight. Fragrance oils are sold and stated in grams, and their density is not the same as water, so a 20 ml scoop is not 20 g. Weigh on a scale that reads to 0.1 g or better and tare the beaker first — a Silicon Measuring Beaker at ₹300.00 is easy to tare and easy to scrape, and the Candle Making Weighing Scale is listed at ₹354.00, currently on low stock. A 1 g error at 200 g of wax is half a percentage point of load, which is both a cost error and a formula error.

The rate belongs to the pack, not to the scent

Two candles, same scent, same load, same wax — and a ₹51.61 difference that exists only in your purchase history.

Fragrance per-gram rates fall harder with pack size than wax rates do. British Rose is ₹6.29 a gram in the 15 gm bottle, ₹4.25 at 50 gm, ₹3.42 at 100 gm, ₹3.19 at 500 gm and ₹3.07 at 1 kg. That is roughly a halving between the smallest and the largest pack, and it lands directly on every candle: ₹100.69 of scent versus ₹49.09 for the same 16 g.

Priced above: British Rose Fragrance Oil 15 gm ₹94.40, 50 gm ₹212.40, 100 gm ₹342.20, 500 gm ₹1,593.00, 1 kg ₹3,068.00 — live variants, September 2026. Candles per pack are whole 16 g doses, before any allowance for what stays in the beaker.

Two things in that table are worth saying out loud. The 15 gm bottle cannot dose a single 200 g candle at 8% — it is a sampling size, priced like one, and costing a production candle at 15 gm rates makes a viable product look unviable. And the step from 500 gm to 1 kg is small: ₹1.89 a candle. If cash or shelf life is tight, two 500 gm packs bought two months apart cost you very little more than the kilo and leave you far less exposed to a scent that stops selling.

MATCH THE PACK TO THE MONTH
Work out your monthly oil usage per scent before you choose a pack: candles per month × grams per candle. Fifty 200 g candles a month at 8% is 800 g of one scent — a kilo pack, comfortably. Ten candles a month of a seasonal scent is 160 g, which is a 100 gm pack and a top-up, not a kilo sitting in a Mumbai cupboard through the monsoon. Store oils sealed, cool and out of sunlight, as the wax pages advise for wax.
The CSI principle
You do not buy a fragrance. You buy a per-gram rate and a commitment.
The same 16 g of British Rose is ₹100.69 from a sample bottle and ₹49.09 from a kilo — a ₹2,580.27 difference across fifty candles, decided before you melted any wax.

What 16 g of scent costs, oil by oil

At one load, in one jar, the scent line still spans more than eight times between the cheapest and the dearest thing on the shelf.

Everything below is the same candle: a 200 g wax fill at 8% of wax weight, 16 g of oil, priced at each oil's 1 kg rate. The usage column is quoted from each product page — where a page states a range, the lower of that range and your wax's ceiling is your real cap.

Usage ranges are quoted from the product pages; the Club De Nuit page positions candles as a secondary use at 7–10%.

The spread is the story. At 8%, the scent line runs from ₹45.31 on Citrus Lemon to ₹122.34 on Vanilla Bean and ₹384.90 on the Club De Nuit Intense inspired oil — a difference of ₹339.58 on one candle, against a wax line of ₹101.48 for the whole 200 g of CSI 464. Choosing Lavender over Citrus Lemon costs ₹38.22 a candle, ₹1,911.20 over fifty. None of that makes the dearer oil wrong; it makes it a pricing decision rather than a preference.

What this page will not do is rank those oils by throw per rupee. CSI does not publish comparative strength data and we will not invent it — some pages state a range starting at 6%, some at 7%, some simply give a maximum, and how a given oil performs in your wax, your jar and your wick is a test-burn question, not a costing question. Cost the grams you pour; decide the grams somewhere else.

Assuming a dearer oil needs less of it. It might, and if a scent genuinely works at 6% where another needs 10%, the rupees can flip: 12 g of Lavender is ₹62.65, where 20 g of Citrus Lemon is ₹56.64. But that only holds if you have actually burn-tested both at those loads in your own jar. Until then it is a hope with a spreadsheet attached. Cost what you pour today; re-cost after the test.
Planning a festive range for Diwali on 8 November 2026? Pours need to be done by about mid-October to allow a 14–21 day cure plus courier time, and the oil has to land before that. A six-scent range in 50 gm packs is ₹1,331.98; the same six in 100 gm packs is ₹2,424.16. For kilo and bulk pricing across a range, ask on WhatsApp — those quotes are not published on the site.

Two ceilings, and the lower one is yours

The cheapest way to overspend on fragrance is to pour past a limit that was published all along.

Every scented candle has two stated maximums. The wax page gives one — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10% of total wax weight, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13%, while Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish one at all. The oil page gives the other — Fresh Strawberries states 6–9% of total wax weight, Roasted Coffee 6–10% for soy, Vanilla Bean up to 10% for soy. The lower of the two governs. These are the manufacturers' stated formulation maximums, not rules imposed by anyone else, and MSDS and IFRA documentation is available on request.

Lower governs

Wax ceilings and oil usage ranges are quoted from the product pages as printed; Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a fragrance ceiling, so ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming one.

Costing at the ceiling is a useful discipline even if you pour below it, because it gives you the worst case your price has to survive. On a 200 g candle in Chunks with Roasted Coffee, the scent line at the 10% cap is ₹74.76 against ₹59.81 at 8% — a difference of ₹14.95 a candle. If your retail price only works at 8%, you have no headroom to answer a customer who says the scent is faint, and that is a pricing problem disguised as a formulation one.

The load you can afford and the load the page allows are two different limits. Respect the lower of them, then price for it.

The grams that never reach the wax

Oil left in a beaker is the most expensive residue in the workshop, gram for gram.

Wax residue costs you around half a rupee a gram. Fragrance residue costs three to eight, and on the premium end far more. The film left in a measuring beaker, the drops on the pipette, the last of a bottle you cannot tip out and the batch you scrapped after a bad pour all belong in the fragrance line, not in a shrug.

There is no CSI figure for decanting loss and this page will not invent one. As a worked assumption, take 2%: a 16 g dose becomes 16.32 g drawn from the bottle, which on British Rose moves the line from ₹49.09 to ₹50.07 and adds ₹49.09 across fifty candles. On Vanilla Bean the same 2% is ₹122.34 over fifty. Measure yours the same way you measure wax: weigh the bottle at the start of a month, weigh it at the end, divide the difference by the candles poured, and compare that with the recipe.

1
Weigh the bottle before the run. Note the gross weight of every oil bottle you will open, to the gram. This takes two minutes for a six-scent range and gives you the only honest usage figure you will ever have.
2
Tare the beaker, not the jar. Zero the scale with the empty beaker on it, pour oil to the target grams, and add it to the wax at the temperature your wax page states — 80–90°C on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page, with a slow two-minute stir. Pouring oil directly into a jar you are also weighing is how doses drift.
3
Scrape and count. Tip the beaker into the melt and let it drain for a few seconds rather than wiping it into the bin. Count the candles the run produced, including the ones you will not sell.
4
Reconcile at the end of the month. Grams used ÷ candles poured is your real dose. If it is 17.5 g where the recipe says 16 g, your wastage allowance is 9%, not 2% — and on British Rose that is ₹4.60 a candle you had not costed.
Topping up a weak-smelling batch from the bottle. Adding a splash mid-pour puts an unrecorded, unrepeatable dose into the candle and an unrecorded cost into the month. If a batch reads weak, finish it, note it, and change one variable in the next batch — the load, the wick or the cure — rather than the pour in progress. The extra grams are silent both in the sheet and in the formula, and they usually push you past the lower of your two stated ceilings.

A fifty-candle scent budget, and the kilo question

The pack you buy for fifty candles decides what the next hundred cost.

Fifty 200 g candles at 8% need 800 g of one scent, plus an allowance. At British Rose's 1 kg rate the oil drawn is ₹2,454.40; at 50 gm packs it would be ₹3,398.40, a difference of ₹944.00 for the identical candles. The kilo costs ₹3,068.00 on the day and leaves about 200 g on the shelf — ₹613.60 of stock, not a loss, and enough for another twelve candles.

Charge it two ways, exactly as with wax. Consumption costing puts ₹49.09 on each candle and carries the remaining 200 g as inventory. Pack costing charges the whole bottle to the run: ₹3,068.00 ÷ 50 = ₹61.36 a candle. Consumption costing is the one to price from; pack costing is the one your bank balance experiences in the week you order. A brand that quotes wholesale off pack costing usually walks away from orders it could profitably take.

Fifty-candle scent budget

The 800 g requirement is fifty 16 g doses before any wastage allowance.

Now the range question, which is where scent budgets actually break. Five scents across the same fifty candles means ten candles each, 160 g of each oil — and a kilo of any one of them would sit for six months. A six-scent range in 50 gm packs is ₹1,331.98 and gives you roughly three 200 g candles per scent; the same range in 100 gm packs is ₹2,424.16 for about six each. Narrow ranges get the kilo rate. Wide ranges pay the sample rate on every candle. That trade-off is worth costing before it is worth debating.

Buying a kilo of an untested scent because the per-gram rate looks good. The rate is real; the risk is the shelf. A kilo of Vanilla Bean at ₹7,646.00 that does not sell is not a bargain, and the page notes vanillin at 2.5% with potential discolouration, which is a cosmetic effect worth seeing in your own wax before you commit. Prove a scent with a 50 gm or 100 gm pack and a cure of 14–21 days, then buy the kilo for the scent that sold.

Five checks before the scent line goes into your price

A fragrance cost you cannot defend is a price you cannot hold.

One: is the load a percentage of wax weight? That is the convention CSI's pages use, and mixing it with percentage-of-candle drifts your grams. Two: is the rate from the pack you buy, not the pack you once bought? Sample-size rates make real candles look unaffordable. Three: is the cap the lower of the two stated ceilings? A 13% wax with a 6–9% oil is a 9% candle. Four: is there a wastage allowance and is it labelled an assumption? Five: does the bottle reconcile? Grams gone ÷ candles poured, monthly.

Run those five and the fragrance line becomes the most predictable number on your sheet — which matters, because it is usually the second largest material line after wax and the one that changes most between two products in the same catalogue. On a 200 g candle in CSI 464 with an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, wax and wick together are ₹107.38; British Rose at 8% adds ₹49.09 on top of that, and Vanilla Bean would add ₹122.34. Same jar, same wick, same wax — and a different business.

Two things this page leaves for elsewhere. It does not choose the scent or argue about throw; the fragrance guides own that, and your own burn tests settle it. And it does not price your outer packaging, labels, courier or labour, because CSI does not sell them — those are rows you fill from your own invoices. What CSI can quote, on WhatsApp and with a GST invoice, is the kilo rate for the scents you have already proven.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells fragrance oil, and the commercially convenient message would be that a heavier load and a premium scent always earn their keep. This page says the opposite where the numbers do: going from 8% to 10% on Lavender adds ₹20.88 to every candle and ₹1,044.20 to a fifty-candle run before it has sold anything, several oils state ranges that stop below the wax's own ceiling, and the cheapest way to cut the fragrance line is usually a bigger pack of a scent you have already proven, not a different scent.

Every per-gram rate is calculated from live CSI variant prices in September 2026, and the linked product pages are authoritative. Usage ranges are quoted from the oil pages as printed — Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Apple Cinnamon and Woody Oud state 6–10% of total wax weight for soy; British Rose, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Jasmine and Vanilla Bean state up to 10% for soy; Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%; Dark Vanilla Oud and Lavender state 6–10%. Where a page publishes no range we say so rather than estimate one. Wax ceilings are from the wax pages: CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%. Decanting losses and the 2% allowance are stated assumptions, not measured data.

Multiply the wax weight by the load to get oil grams, then multiply by the pack's per-gram rate. A 200 g wax fill at 8% is 16 g; at British Rose's 1 kg rate of ₹3.07 a gram that is ₹49.09. Add a wastage allowance for what stays in the beaker — this page assumes 2%, which makes it ₹50.07.
How much fragrance oil goes into a 200 g candle?
With load stated as a percentage of wax weight, a 200 g wax fill takes 12 g at 6%, 16 g at 8% and 20 g at 10%, and the finished candle weighs 212, 216 or 220 g. If you want the finished candle to weigh exactly 200 g, use about 185 g of wax and 14.8 g of oil at 8%.
Which fragrance oil gives the lowest cost per candle?
At 1 kg rates, Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at ₹2.83 a gram gives the lowest scent line of the oils compared here — ₹45.31 for a 16 g dose against ₹83.54 for Lavender and ₹122.34 for Vanilla Bean. Cheapest per gram is not automatically cheapest per candle: if a scent needs a higher load to satisfy you in your own burn test, re-cost it at that load.
Is it cheaper to buy fragrance oil in 1 kg packs?
Per gram, yes, and the step is large. British Rose falls from ₹6.29 a gram at 15 gm to ₹3.07 at 1 kg — ₹100.69 against ₹49.09 for the same 16 g dose. The honest caveat is exposure: a kilo is 62 candles of one scent at 8%, so buy it for a scent you have already sold, not one you hope to.
Does the fragrance load limit come from the wax or the oil?
Both, and the lower figure governs. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% of total wax weight, but Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%, so 9% is the cap for that pairing — 18 g on a 200 g fill, ₹63.72 of oil. These are the stated formulation maximums from the product pages; MSDS and IFRA documentation is available on WhatsApp.
How much oil do I need for 50 candles, and what should it cost?
Fifty 200 g candles at 8% need 800 g of one scent plus an allowance. On British Rose that is ₹2,454.40 of oil drawn at 1 kg rates, or ₹3,398.40 if you were buying 50 gm packs. A 1 kg pack at ₹3,068.00 covers the run and leaves about 200 g — ₹613.60 of stock — for the next batch.
