How to Make Candle Fragrance Smell Stronger When Burning

What is the cheapest paid change? A wick step. Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each in Thin (C1) and ₹9.44 in Thick (C2), flat across every listed pack, so a whole 100-candle run moves up one size for ₹354. A wider jar is the next step up at ₹23.60 more per candle.
What should I not do first? Reach for the oil bottle. Raising load only helps below the lower of two stated ceilings — your wax page's and your oil page's — and it is the one change that bills you on every candle you ever pour again.
How do I know a change worked? Every change here has a reading attached — a pool that reaches the glass in two to three hours, a logged add temperature, a timed stir, a doorway score at 30, 60 and 120 minutes. A change with no reading is a habit, not an improvement.
Four changes you can make tonight for nothing
The first instinct, when a candle smells thin, is to reformulate. It is an expensive instinct and usually premature, because a candle can under-perform for reasons that have nothing to do with what is in it. Four of those reasons are free to remove, using a candle you have already poured.
One: stop judging young candles. Curing is the wax crystal structure settling and the fragrance distributing evenly through it, and it takes weeks. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a cure of "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests", and standard practice for soy containers runs to 14 to 21 days, with woody, gourmand and oriental profiles often still improving at day 21. Keep a sister jar from the same pour lidded in a closed carton out of sunlight and burn it at day 21. If it reads stronger than the jar you judged at day two, nothing about your recipe was wrong.
Two: burn to a full pool before forming an opinion. Hot throw comes off the surface of the pool, so a candle alight for twenty minutes is releasing from a fraction of its available surface. Give it two to three hours, undisturbed. Most "weak" verdicts are delivered in the first ten minutes, the part of a burn that tells you least.
Three: put the candle in a room it can fill. A 120 g jar is a bedroom, bathroom or study product; asking it to scent an open-plan living area with a fan running is a specification mismatch, not a fragrance fault. CSI's family-level notes for small bedrooms, large living rooms and bathrooms are a reasonable starting map.
Four: hand the scoring to somebody else. You have been breathing this scent since the pour, and perception drops sharply within about twenty minutes of exposure. Light it, leave the room, return at 30, 60 and 120 minutes and score from a fixed position at the door — better still, let two people who did not make it score it without being told what they are comparing.
The strength ledger — what each change costs, and for how long
Most advice about hot throw sorts changes by how much they help. A supplier cannot honestly publish that ranking, because how much any of them helps depends on your wax, wick, vessel and room. What can be published exactly is what each change costs and how long it keeps costing — a more useful order anyway, because it tells you what to try first when you do not yet know which change your candle needs.
There are three cost shapes. Free forever: calendar time, patience, protocol. One-off: an instrument bought once and reused for years. Per candle, forever: a line on your bill of materials that you pay on every unit you ever make again. Confusing the third shape with the first is how makers end up with a permanently dearer candle and no evidence that it is better.

Read the table twice. The first reading is a spending order. The second is a warning: the two changes at the bottom are three to seven times the cost of the wick step, and both change the candle enough that the wick has to be re-tested anyway. Across a 100-candle run the same rows read ₹0, ₹0, ₹0, ₹0, ₹708 of instruments once, then ₹354 of extra wick, ₹683 of different wax, ₹1,582 of extra oil and ₹2,360 of wider glass — which is the whole argument for doing them in that order.
Buying releasing surface — the part of the candle you can actually enlarge
Fragrance leaves a burning candle by evaporating from the melt pool, which makes pool area the release area. Pool area is set by two things you buy: the wick, which decides how much of the vessel the pool reaches, and the vessel, which decides how much there is to reach. Neither is the oil; both are cheaper than the oil.
The arithmetic is a circle: area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Using the diameters CSI jar pages state, a full pool in the Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid — stated 6 cm diameter, capacity 120 gm — is about 28.27 cm²; in the White Matte Glass Jar, stated 7 cm width and 200 ml fill, about 38.48 cm². That is 36% more evaporating surface for ₹23.60 more per jar.
The wick is where the same idea gets cheap. A pool that stops short of the glass is a candle whose releasing surface you have paid for and are not using. Burn three identical jars across two wick sizes and keep the one that reaches the wall in two to three hours with no soot and no mushrooming — under fifty rupees of wick, and the most informative purchase on this page.

A free variant of the same idea: two burning points release from two surfaces. A pair of 6 cm jars gives about 56.55 cm² of combined pool against 28.27 cm² from one, from two positions in the room. It costs one more jar, one more wick and twice the wax per pair — but sold as a two-candle set it raises the order value along with the coverage. The four numbers in your recipe that decide how much of the oil survives
Assume the free changes are made and the pool reaches the glass. The next place strength leaks away is the pour itself, through four numbers most makers can quote approximately and almost nobody has written down: the weight of oil, the temperature it went in at, how long it was stirred, and the load that results. All four are free to fix; two need instruments you buy once.
Weigh, do not measure. Load is a weight percentage and oils differ in density, so millilitres will not give a repeatable load. A Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 is the cheapest purchase that turns a good batch into a recipe.
Add inside the band your wax page states, and log the reading. Not a band from a video — the one printed on the wax in your hand. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C; Eco Soy CSI 400 states 80–90°C (85°C) with a two-minute stir; CSI 464 states both melt and pour as 80–90°C; CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C — an entirely different working range. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354. One CSI customer of the Mini Electric Wax Melter, Arzoo Vyas, describes the leak from the inside: "My temperature would drop within seconds due to which I was not getting a good hot throw." That is one maker's experience rather than a specification — but it is exactly what this number closes.
Stir for two timed minutes. Eco Soy CSI 400's page specifies two minutes for its own wax and it is sensible practice on any soy. Oil that is dispersed rather than dissolved migrates as the candle cools, giving a jar richer in some places than others — weak in the pool, oily at the surface.
Then the load, and only within two stated ceilings. Your wax page states the maximum load that wax is formulated to hold; your oil page states the candle load its supplier recommends; work to the lower of the two. Chunks state 8% to 13% with 10% recommended, CSI 464 up to 10%, CSI 468 up to 13%. Most candle-facing CSI oil pages state 6–10% or up to 10% for soy — Cinnamon Vanilla is one of the few stating "Up to 13% of total wax weight", which makes it one of the rare pairings where 13% is supported by both pages. At 6% with both ceilings higher, raising the load is legitimate and probably your answer; at the lower ceiling it is finished as a variable. Oils that are still working in hour two
A fragrance oil is a mixture of materials that leave a warm surface at very different rates, and the perfumer's top / heart / base description is a description of that order. In a candle it maps onto the clock of a burn: the first minutes are mostly top notes, hour two is mostly base. A candle that smells enormous at the strike and quiet by the time guests arrive is not failing — it is behaving as its structure says it will.
That makes the stated base line the line to read, and it is published on most of the range: 88 of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages state a full top / heart / base pyramid, 14 state a single-note profile, five state nothing. What no page publishes is how much of each material is in the blend — no CSI page lists constituent materials or percentages, and none publishes a laboratory or GC-MS report. A base line is a direction to test, never a prediction.

None of this is an instruction to abandon fresh and citrus scents, which sell hard through an Indian summer. The structural argument says an unanchored bright oil has less left in the pool at hour two; it does not say the candle is bad. Give a fresh oil the top of its stated band, a full cure, a pool that reaches the glass and — if you blend — a heavy base underneath. The top half of that table is reversible and costs under ₹1,200 across a hundred candles. The bottom half is a permanent rise in your bill of materials, or a new product. Run the cheap rows first and you reach the expensive ones knowing what you are buying — the only condition under which they are worth buying.
Six weeks, three changes, one variable at a time
Most makers never find out which change fixed their candle because they make three at once. A batch with a longer cure, a bigger wick and a new oil that comes out well tells you the batch is good; it tells you nothing you can repeat, and when it drifts you have three suspects and no notes. Here are the same changes spread across six weeks, one variable per batch, working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026.
One closing caution: perceived strength is not proportional to anything you can put on a batch sheet, and the same candle reads weaker to whoever has sat with it for an hour than to whoever has just walked in. That is why every reading here is taken from a doorway, at a fixed time, ideally by somebody else — and why the record card, not the wick, is the part of this page that compounds.
