Change Control · Jars · Substitution under deadline
A slightly different jar is practical only if three things hold: the lot you received is close enough, the fill does not quietly change your quantities and label, and the test fits before your date. Measure ten jars, price both fills, and schedule the test before you pour a single production candle.
+5.33%
pool area, 7.6 → 7.8 cm illustrative jars · by-line fill adds 10.7 g per candle, 10.11 kg of wax across 1,000
Quick answers — read this first
What should I measure before substituting a jar for 1,000 candles? On ten jars from the delivered lot: inside diameter at the fill line (mean and range), at mid-height and base, internal height, base and wall thickness, brim volume, weighed fill at your line, finish and lid fit.

How different is too different? Set tolerances before measuring. In the illustration a 7.8 cm substitute is +5.33% in pool area — past an example ±2% CONFIRM tolerance, so it needs a real side-by-side.

Does it change my material order? Only if you fill by line: each candle becomes 210.7 g and the run needs 10.11 kg more wax and 879 g more oil — ₹8,833.80 in this example. By weight, no change.

Is there time to test? In an example schedule the early decision comes around day 10 and full life later. Deadline before day 10: not practical. Between: CONDITIONAL first tranche. Test kit: ₹1,511.60.
The short answer
Gate 1: Measure 10 jars from the lot. Illustration: mean 7.80 cm, range 7.75–7.84 cm (2.3% area spread). Test with the widest three.
Gate 2: By weight: 200 g, fill 4.76 cm. By line: 210.7 g per candle, +10.11 kg wax and +879 g oil over 1,000 (+₹8,833.80).
Gate 3: Six candles from one melt; early decision after cure and early cycles; full life alongside. GO, CONDITIONAL or NO-GO. Several candidates: score them first.

Three gates in the order you open them: measure the delivered lot (illustrative 7.6 cm approved vs 7.8 cm substitute, +5.33% pool area), price the fill decision across 1,000 candles, then check the test fits your deadline. The dashed panel is the decision. Thresholds and the schedule are examples to replace with your own; no burn result is implied.
Straight answer
I have 1,000 candles due but can only source a slightly different jar — what measurements should I compare before deciding whether the substitution is practical?
Compare ten measurements on ten jars from the delivered lot — then check the quantities and the calendar. The measurements: inside diameter at the fill line (mean and range across the ten), inside diameter at mid-height and base (for taper), internal height, base thickness, wall thickness, brim volume, the weighed fill at your line, finish, and lid fit. Convert the diameters to pool area (π × d² ÷ 4): in our illustration a 7.6 cm approved jar against a 7.8 cm substitute is +5.33%, enough to need a real side-by-side. Next, decide whether you fill by weight or by line; by line each candle becomes 210.7 g and 1,000 of them need 10.11 kg more wax and 879 g more oil (₹8,833.80 with Chunks and British Rose). Finally, check the test fits: six candles from one melt, a cure, early burns and a full-life candle per set. If the early decision lands before your deadline and the full life does not, the substitution is conditionally practical — a first tranche, the rest held. Test kit: ₹1,511.60.
One line: measure the lot you received, price the fill you will pour, and check the test fits the date — practical needs all three.
The test that decides this substitution is six 200 g candles — three in your approved jar, three in the substitute — poured from one melt: about 100.8 g of oil and 1,159.2 g of wax at 8% with a 5% allowance. In CSI stock that is British Rose 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g (₹436.60) and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹898.00). For the 1,000-candle run itself, see the quantity maths.

"Practical" means three things, not one

With 1,000 candles due, the question is not only "will it burn the same?" It is "can I prove that, pour it and label it before the date?"

A substitution is practical when three separate conditions hold. The jar you actually received is close enough to the approved one — measured on the delivered lot, not on a sample. The substitution does not quietly change your quantities, costs or label weight. And the test it calls for fits between today and your deadline. This page turns each into a gate you can check. The figures use a labelled illustration — an approved straight jar of 7.6 cm inside and a substitute of 7.8 cm, 200 g candles — because your title gives no dimensions; replace them with your own.

The CSI principle
Measure the lot, price the fill, check the calendar — then decide.
A substitute jar that passes on geometry can still fail on quantity or on time. All three gates have to be open before the first production pour.

Gate 1: the measurement sheet for the delivered lot

Measure ten jars from the lot you will actually use, not the three samples you were sent. The sheet below lists every measurement that affects the candle, how to take it, and an example tolerance that decides whether the line calls for a CONFIRM test, a REPEAT test or a stop. The tolerances are examples — set yours before you measure.

Measurement sheet · approved jar vs substitute lot · example tolerances are the reader's to set
Ten measurements before 1,000 candles
Measurement Approved jar Substitute lot How Example tolerance / action
Inside diameter at fill line (mean of 10) 7.60 cm 7.80 cm Caliper inside jaws, two directions Pool area ±2% → CONFIRM; beyond → REPEAT
Inside diameter, lot range record 7.75–7.84 cm Min and max of the 10 Spread smaller than the change you are testing
Inside diameter at mid-height and base 7.60 / 7.60 cm measure Caliper Any taper → see the tapered posts
Internal height measure measure Depth gauge Headspace within ±5 mm of approved
Base thickness measure measure Outside height − internal depth Within 1 mm of approved
Wall thickness at fill line measure measure (outside − inside) ÷ 2 Within 1 mm of approved
Brim volume 363 ml if 8 cm deep measure Water to the brim, weighed (1 g ≈ 1 ml) Information only
Fill weight at your line 200 g weigh a pour Melted wax to the line, weighed Label weight must stay true
Finish / glass type clear record Look; ask the supplier Change → add the frosted-glass checks
Lid / closure fit record record Fit test on 10 jars Packaging line, not burn

In the illustration the substitute averages 7.80 cm inside, which gives a melt pool of 47.78 cm² against 45.36 cm² — +5.33%. That is outside a ±2% CONFIRM tolerance and inside a ±10% REPEAT tolerance, so on geometry alone the substitute needs a real side-by-side, not just a glance. The lot range, 7.75–7.84 cm, is worth as much attention: it is a 2.3% spread in pool area within the substitute lot. If the spread inside the lot is bigger than the difference you are testing, a six-candle test can pass on lucky jars and still leave a quarter of the 1,000 outside what you proved.

Test with the worst jars, not the average
Sort the ten measured jars and use the widest three for the substitute test candles. If they pass, the narrower jars in the lot sit between the approved jar and a result you have proven. Here that means jars at 7.82, 7.83 and 7.84 cm. For the full substitution scoring rule across several candidate jars, see the alternative-container post.
"The supplier's drawing says 7.8 cm." A drawing gives a nominal size, usually of the outside or the rim. The candle is decided by the inside diameter at the fill line, lot by lot. The makers who get caught by a "slightly different jar" are almost always the ones who measured a sample — or nothing — and then received a lot that ran wider, thicker or more tapered than the sample.

Gate 2: what the jar does to 1,000 candles of material

A wider jar filled to the old line is a heavier candle — a thousand times over.

Decide first whether production fills by weight (every candle 200 g, fill line lower) or by line (same visual fill, more wax). By weight, 200 g stands 4.76 cm tall in the substitute instead of 5.01 cm. By line, each candle becomes 210.7 g. Over 1,000 candles, with a 3% pour-loss allowance (a labelled working assumption) and an 8% load, the two choices order different amounts of wax and oil.

British Rose bottles 16 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g · ₹50,681.00 17 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g · ₹53,524.80 ₹2,843.80
Wax + oil ₹1,64,491.00 ₹1,73,324.80 +₹8,833.80

Filling by line costs ₹8,833.80 more in wax and oil across the run, and every candle carries 10.7 g more than the label says. Filling by weight costs nothing extra but gives a visibly lower fill in the substitute jar, which some customers will notice beside older stock. Neither is wrong — but the choice changes both the product and the test, so make it before Gate 3. Two further notes on the order: the practical wax mix is 5 kg bags — CSI's 10 kg bag of Chunks is 90 paise a kilo dearer than the 5 kg, and the 500 g bag is only ₹1.00 a kilo cheaper, which is not worth opening 380 bags; and British Rose is one of the oils with a real per-gram step (₹3.42 at 100 g, ₹3.07 at 1 kg). Quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp, and no volume discount figure is published.

Gate 3: does the test fit before the deadline?

The substitute in the illustration needs a side-by-side on the wick-and-jar lines, with one candle per set taken to the end of life. The schedule below is an example working plan — your cure and burn practice set the real one. What it shows is the shape of the problem: the early decision comes around ten days after the jars arrive, and the full-life result comes later still.

Example working schedule · cure length and cycles are labelled assumptions
From delivered jars to a production decision
When What
Day 0 Measure 10 jars from the delivered lot; weigh-pour two; decide by weight or by line
Day 1 Pour 6 test candles from one melt of the approved formula
Days 2–8 Cure (example: 7 days — use your usual cure)
Days 8–10 Early burn cycles on all six, one cycle a day (3–4 h, labelled)
Day 10 Early decision: GO / CONDITIONAL / NO-GO for the early lines
Day 10 onward One candle per set continues to the end of life while production is prepared

That leaves three honest positions. If the deadline is comfortably beyond the full-life result, test fully and decide once. If it falls between the early decision and the full-life result, the substitution is conditionally practical: pour a limited first tranche once the early lines pass, hold the remainder, and release the rest when the full-life candles finish clean. If the deadline falls before the early decision, the substitution is not practical on this timetable, and the substitution-partial-production-or-wait post weighs the alternatives.

1
Day 0: measure and weighTen jars from the lot on the sheet; two weigh-pours to your line. Decide by weight or by line and write it down.
2
Day 1: pour six from one melt3 × approved jar (control) and 3 × the widest substitute jars, approved wick, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per 200 g candle at 8% (or the by-line weight if that is your plan).
3
Days 2–8: cureYour usual cure — 7 days here is an example checkpoint, not a rule. Prepare production materials in parallel, but do not pour.
4
Days 8–10: early burnsAbout 3–4 hours per cycle (a commonly used cycle; label it), one cycle a day, all six side by side. Full scoring sheet each time: time to full pool, pool depth, tunnel ring, flame, soot, jar-side reading, weight loss.
5
Day 10: early decisionApply the decision rule. A pass on every early safety line allows a limited first tranche if your deadline needs it.
6
Afterwards: finish the full-life candlesOne per set to the end of usable wax. Release the held stock only when both are clean to the end.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 1,000-candle order is a large order for us, and the path of least resistance is to ship the wax and oil and let you pour. The test above costs ₹1,511.60 — 0.92% of the run's wax and oil — and it is the cheapest insurance on the whole job. If the timetable does not allow it, the honest answer is a smaller first tranche or a later date, not a larger order placed on hope.

Decision rule: go, conditional or no-go

CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit. The burn lines pass only if no worse than the approved jar on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one).

Whatever the outcome, record the lot measurements, the fill decision, the test sheets and the date, and keep one unburned candle from each set. The change-control form post has a one-page form for this, and the reproducibility-record post shows how to write jar dimensions so the next substitution starts from numbers, not memory.

Large festive and wedding orders cluster around Diwali (8 November 2026) and the November–February wedding season. If a 1,000-candle order depends on a substitute jar, send us the lot measurements and your fill decision on WhatsApp; we will help size the test kit and quote the run — 189.5 kg of wax and 16.48 kg of oil by weight in this example. No volume discount figure is published; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp.

If you have several substitutes to choose between, rank them first with the scoring rule in the alternative-container post. If the substitute is wider in a way that also changes the shape — shorter, thicker-walled, tapered — the specific posts cover each: wider and shorter, thicker glass, tapered. For the area maths behind a small diameter change, the hub post has the sensitivity table, and the only-the-jar post has the general retest list.

CSI containers as substitutes: the White Matte Glass Jar (₹354.00 for 5), 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar (₹200.60 for 5, ₹1,475.00 for 50, ₹2,950.00 for 100) and Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml (₹47.20 each) are listed without published dimensions or fill weights — put ten through the measurement sheet before you commit 1,000 candles to them. See all glass jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not jars. On a 1,000-candle order the commercial pull is to ship and let you pour. This page recommends a test that costs well under one per cent of the run's wax and oil, and a smaller first tranche or a later date when the timetable will not allow it.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, rechecked 25 September 2026. The jar diameters and the ten lot readings are illustrations; pool areas, fill heights, by-line candle weight, the 1,000-candle quantities and the listed pack mixes are plain arithmetic.

The 200 g fill, 8% load, 3% run allowance, 5% test allowance, 0.88 g/ml wax factor, tolerances, 7-day cure, 3–4 hour cycles and the day-by-day schedule are labelled examples. CSI publishes no jar dimensions, burn results or safety limits and no volume discount; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp +91 7397976926, where we also provide GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different jar for a large candle order?
Only after measuring the delivered lot, deciding how you fill it, and running a side-by-side against the approved jar that fits before your deadline. Otherwise pour a limited first tranche or wait.
How many jars should I measure from a new batch?
Ten is a practical working sample for a 1,000-candle order: enough to see the lot's range. Use the widest three for the test candles.
How much extra wax do I need if the new jar is wider?
None if you fill by weight. If you fill to the old line, multiply by the area ratio: a 7.6 → 7.8 cm change makes a 200 g candle 210.7 g, about 10.11 kg more wax over 1,000 at 8% and 3% allowance.
How long does it take to test a new candle jar?
It depends on your cure and burn practice. In an example plan — 7-day cure, one 3–4 hour cycle a day — an early decision comes around day 10, with the full-life result later.
What if the new jars vary a lot within the batch?
If the spread within the lot is bigger than the difference you are testing, a small test can pass on lucky jars. Ask for a tighter lot, sort jars by measurement, or test the extremes.
Should I change the wick to make a substitute jar work in time?
Not under deadline. A new wick resets the whole test. If the approved wick fails in the substitute, wait, split the order or choose another jar — the substitution-or-wait post weighs those options.
