I Want My Candle Brand to Use One Standard Jar Across the Entire Collection — How Do I Build a Wax and Wick Testing System Around That Container?
शेयर करना
What does fixing the jar buy me? Two of the four variables in a candle, permanently. Diameter and fill stop moving, so every test after that is wax × wick or oil × wick — two dimensions instead of four.
What does the first grid cost? ₹2,686.88 in consumed materials for twelve jars — three container waxes × two wick sizes × two jars each — which is ₹223.91 a data point. The first purchase that lets you run it, with wax and wicks left over, is ₹4,735.60.
And each new fragrance after that? A four-jar scent gate: two wick candidates, two jars each, on the chosen wax. ₹903.19 to ₹1,017.73 depending on the oil — the only line that changes is the oil's per-gram price.
What a fixed container actually removes
A container candle has four things that interact: the diameter of the melt pool, the wax, the oil and its load, and the wick. Change any one and the burn changes. The reason a standard jar is worth more than it looks is arithmetic: fixing the container fixes two of the four — the diameter and the fill weight — and it fixes them permanently, for every product you will ever launch in it.
Fill weight matters more than makers expect. It is the number that turns a percentage into grams. At a 150 g fill and 8% of total wax weight — the convention CSI's own wax pages use — every jar in your collection is 138.89 g of wax and 11.11 g of oil, whatever is in it. Change the jar and that pair of numbers changes, which changes your per-candle cost, your pack arithmetic, your labelled weight and your oil order. Keep the jar and one line of arithmetic serves the whole range.
| Question you are asking | Variables with a floating jar | Variables with a fixed jar | Jars needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which wax suits my product? | Jar × wax × wick × load | Wax × wick | 12 |
| Can I add this fragrance? | Jar × oil × wick × load | Oil × wick | 4 |
| Can I run this at a higher load? | Jar × load × wick | Load × wick | 4 |
| Does this colour disturb the burn? | Jar × dye × wick | Dye only | 1 |
| Is this new wax bag the same as the last? | Not answerable | Batch only | 1 per scent |
| What does one candle cost me? | Recalculated every season | One line, reused | 0 |
Read the last two rows as the real payoff. Once the jar is a constant, "is this bag of wax the same as the last one" becomes a question you can answer with a single jar — and "what does a candle cost" stops being a spreadsheet exercise you redo whenever the packaging changes. Neither is possible while the container is still moving.
Choosing the jar you will live with
There are three questions, in this order. Does the page publish what I need to plan? Does the pack ladder go where my volume is going? Is it a diameter I can wick? Aesthetics come fourth, and they come fourth because you can change lids and labels far more cheaply than you can re-run a grid.
| Container | Stated capacity | Stated dimensions | Stated hot-pour limit | Packs and price each |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | "150g fill capacity." | "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm."; base approx 6.5 cm | "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C." | 10 ₹944 · 20 ₹1,888 → ₹94.40 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 gram) | "Fill capacity: ~150 gm" | Height with lid approx 8 cm; outer rim approx 7 cm; base approx 6.5 cm | "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C" | 10 ₹1,070 · 20 ₹2,140 → ₹107 |
| Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid | "Capacity: 120 gm" | "6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height" | Not stated | 1 ₹47.20 · 5 ₹236 → ₹47.20 |
| Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid | "Capacity: 120 gm" | "6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height" | Not stated | 1 ₹47.20 · 5 ₹236 → ₹47.20 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | "fill weight of 200 ml" — a volume, not a weight | "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" | Not stated | 5 ₹354 · 10 ₹708 → ₹70.80 |
| 200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap | "The 200ml capacity" — a volume, not a weight | Not stated | Not stated | 5 ₹200.60 · 50 ₹1,475 · 100 ₹2,950 → ₹40.12 then ₹29.50 |
| Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid | "Fill capacity: ~500 g - 700 g (2 sizes)" | Outer rim approx 10 cm; base approx 10 cm | "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C" | 500 gm ₹212.40 · 700 gm ₹250 |
Two of those rows are instructive in opposite directions. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid publishes everything and has a flat per-piece price, which makes it a very easy jar to build a system on but not a cheap one at volume. The 200 ml Salsa jar publishes least and prices best — ₹29.50 a piece at fifty and above, a 26.5% step down from ₹40.12 — which makes it a good commercial choice and a jar you will have to characterise yourself with a scale and a burn. Both are legitimate. What is not legitimate is choosing the second and planning as if it were the first. The fundamentals of jar selection are in the guide to choosing glass jars.
The standing wax × wick grid
Tier 1. Three container waxes, two Eco wick sizes, two replicate jars in every cell, one reference fragrance at 8% of total wax weight, and the jar's own figures held constant throughout. Twelve jars, and you run it once for the life of the container.
| Line | Consumed by the grid | Cost consumed | Pack you actually buy | Purchase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jars | 12 | ₹1,132.80 | 1 × pack of 20 | ₹1,888 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 555.6 g | ₹332.78 | 1 kg | ₹599 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 555.6 g | ₹281.89 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | 555.6 g | ₹361.11 | 1 kg | ₹650 |
| British Rose · reference oil | 133.33 g | ₹456.27 | 2 × 100 gm | ₹684.40 |
| Eco C1 | 6 | ₹35.40 | 20 wicks | ₹118 |
| Eco C2 | 6 | ₹56.64 | 20 wicks | ₹188.80 |
| Wick stickers | 12 | ₹30 | 1 sheet of 40 | ₹100 |
| Tier 1 | 12 jars | ₹2,686.88 · ₹223.91 a jar | ₹4,735.60 | |
| Pen Thermometer + Scale | — | — | 1 each | ₹708 |
The gap between ₹2,686.88 and ₹4,735.60 is not waste — it is the 1.3 kg of wax, 67 g of oil, 28 wicks and 28 stickers sitting on the shelf for tier 2. In practice the first grid leaves you most of what the first two scent gates will need.
The four-jar scent gate
Tier 2. Everything is already decided except two things: what load this particular oil will carry, and whether it changes the wick verdict. So the gate is two wick candidates, two jars each, on your chosen wax, at the lower of your wax's stated ceiling and the oil's stated ceiling.
| Fragrance oil | 100 g price · per gram | Stated candle load | Oil for 4 jars (44.44 g) | Gate cost | Per jar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹342.20 · ₹3.422 | "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" | ₹152.13 | ₹903.19 | ₹225.80 |
| Sandalwood | ₹502.68 · ₹5.0268 | "Up to 10% for soy wax" | ₹223.42 | ₹974.48 | ₹243.62 |
| Bergamot Amber | ₹560 · ₹5.60 | "6-10% for soy wax candles"; start at 8% | ₹248.87 | ₹999.93 | ₹249.98 |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | ₹590 · ₹5.90 | "6-10% for candles, 10-15% for wax melts" | ₹262.22 | ₹1,013.28 | ₹253.32 |
| Vetiver | ₹600 · ₹6.00 | "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" | ₹266.67 | ₹1,017.73 | ₹254.43 |
The three waxes to put in the grid
Choose grid candidates on what their pages publish, because a wax with a stated load range and a stated pour band gives you a starting point and a wax with neither gives you a guess. These three publish the most in the CSI range, and they differ enough from each other to make the grid worth running.

The record that makes the system work
A test system is a filing system with a bench attached. If you cannot read a result back in eighteen months, you did not build a system — you bought some candles. Two documents do the whole job.
The container sheet. One page, created once, changed almost never. Jar name and handle, the weighed fill in grams and the date you weighed it, the stated outer and base diameter, the stated hot-pour limit, the pack sizes and price per piece on the day you bought, and the chosen wax with its add and pour bands. Every other sheet in the system starts by referring to this one.
The jar line. One line per test jar, ever. Date poured · wax and batch · oil and grams · load as a percentage of total wax weight · add temperature actually read · pour temperature actually read · wick · cure days · burn date · minutes to full pool · flame notes · soot or mushrooming · surface finish · throw at 30 and 120 minutes · verdict. Fifteen fields, one line, and it is the only thing standing between you and re-running tier 1.
When one jar stops being the right answer
Being honest about the limits is part of the method. A single standard container is a strong default and it is not a permanent law.
| Situation | What changes | Can you reuse tier 1? | Cost to extend |
|---|---|---|---|
| A second size at the same diameter (taller jar, same 7 cm) | Fill weight only | Mostly — the wick bracket is a strong prior, not a result | 4 jars per scent to confirm |
| A second size at a different diameter (a 500 g apothecary at 10 cm) | Diameter and fill | No | A new tier 1 grid in that container |
| A votive or tin sub-range | Diameter, fill, and possibly wall material | No | A new grid; tins and glass are not interchangeable |
| Moving to a multi-wick product | Wick count and spacing | No — spacing is a bench problem, not a chart | Its own test programme |
| Your container listing goes out of stock | Possibly nothing, possibly everything | Only if the replacement's stated diameter matches | 4 jars per scent if it matches; a grid if it does not |
| Volume outgrows the pack ladder | Price per piece, not geometry | Yes, entirely | Nothing — it is a purchasing decision |
The last row is the happy case and the third is the one that catches brands out. A votive line looks like a small addition and is a new grid, because a 5.3 cm diameter is a different melt pool from a 7 cm one and no wick verdict carries across. Plan a second range as a second system, budget it at ₹2,686.88 plus a gate per scent, and you will not be surprised. And keep an eye on the one risk you cannot test your way out of: if the exact container listing you standardised on becomes unavailable, your system is only as portable as the stated diameter of its replacement. That is a reason to standardise on a jar whose page publishes its dimensions — and a reason to talk to your supplier about continuity before you print ten thousand labels.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials. We do not sell finished candles, and we do not manufacture wax or fragrance oil. We stock seventy-eight containers, and the commercially convenient version of this page would tell you to try several. Instead it tells you to pick one, pick it for what its listing publishes, and stop — because a brand with a filed grid and one jar reorders the same things every month for years, and a brand that re-tests from scratch every season usually stops making candles.
Every price, pack size and specification here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which is always the authority on current price and availability. Stated fills, dimensions, hot-pour limits, fragrance loads and temperatures are quoted only where the page states them, and in the page's own words — including the cases that matter, such as containers stating a capacity in millilitres rather than grams, the Apothecary listing giving the same dimensions for two sizes, and the Eco C1/C2 page stating no diameter at all. We publish no wick-to-diameter chart, no burn-hour figures and no melt-pool temperatures, because those are not measurements CSI holds, and a chart we invented would cost you a grid. The planning assumptions on this page — 8% as the reference load, two replicate jars per cell, a 14–21 day cure — are ours, and labelled.

Figures verified September 2026: Load convention — fragrance load is a percentage of total wax weight, the wording CSI's wax pages use. A 150 g fill at 8% of wax weight = 138.89 g wax + 11.11 g oil, which is 7.41% of the finished candle under the other convention. Planning assumptions, all ours and all labelled in-text: 8% as the reference load, two replicate jars per cell, a 14–21 day cure window, one wick per jar, and British Rose as the grid's reference oil. Tier 1 arithmetic: jars 12 × ₹94.40 = ₹1,132.80 · wax 555.6 g each at ₹0.599, ₹0.5074 and ₹0.65 per gram = ₹332.78, ₹281.89 and ₹361.11 · oil 133.33 g at ₹3.422/g = ₹456.27 · wicks 6 × ₹5.90 and 6 × ₹9.44 = ₹92.04 · stickers 12 × ₹2.50 = ₹30; total ₹2,686.88 = ₹223.91 a jar. Purchase to run it: ₹599 + ₹507.40 + ₹650 + ₹684.40 + ₹1,888 + ₹118 + ₹188.80 + ₹100 = ₹4,735.60, plus ₹354 + ₹354 for the thermometer and scale. Gate arithmetic: ₹332.78 wax + oil at its 100 g per-gram price + ₹377.60 jars + ₹30.68 wicks + ₹10 stickers. Eighteen of the seventy-eight active container listings state a numeric diameter. No CSI page states a burn time, a melt-pool temperature, a wick diameter for C1/C2, or a dye dosage. Loads are formulation guidance from the product pages, not regulatory limits. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
