Product Brief · Ten SKUs
Every material on your list carries four costs before it makes a candle: a smallest pack, a remainder, a test and a reorder point. Standardise everything the customer does not choose, and spend your variety on the scent.
31 → 18
distinct raw materials for ten SKUs: an unplanned wish-list against a standardised range (ten oils included in both)
Quick answers — read this first
What should I standardise? Wax, jar formats, wick per format, stickers and dyes. Keep the fragrance as the variety.

What does the standard set look like? One wax (Soy Pearl), two formats (Salsa with cap, 85 g tin), two wick types, one sticker, two dyes — 18 materials with the ten oils.

What does extra variety cost? Here: a second wax ₹2,762.00 more on production wax, a third jar ₹1,463.20, a third dye ₹236.00 — each plus a remainder, a test and a reorder point.

What does the order cost? ₹55,090.76 in CSI items for 300 units. See the BOM.
The short answer
Answer: Run all ten SKUs on one wax, two jar formats, one wick per format, one sticker and two dyes; let the ten fragrances carry the variety.
Why: Each distinct material adds a smallest pack, a rounding remainder, a qualification test and a reorder point; a shortage of a shared material stops every SKU, so shared materials should be few and deep.
Method: Write standards → weigh fills → wick-test per format → one candle per scent on the standard → exceptions in writing → buy the platform deep, oils per scent.
Ten SKUs, fewest materials: what each standard removes Illustrative wish-list (31 materials) → standardised range (18 materials) · 6 scents in Salsa jars + 4 in 85 g tins · 30 each BEFORE AFTER Wax 4 waxes 1 · Natural Soy Pearl Jars 6 styles 2 · Salsa + 85 g tin Wicks 4 types 2 · one per jar (after tests) Dyes 6 colours 2 + uncoloured Stickers 1 1 Oils 10 10 — the variety Every material kept off the list removes a smallest pack, a remainder, a qualification test and a reorder point. The scent is the one dimension left free: ten oils stay ten oils, because that is what the customer is choosing.
Each row is one material group. Left: an illustrative unplanned wish-list for ten SKUs; right: the standardised range. Every block removed is a smallest pack, a remainder, a test and a reorder point you no longer carry. The oils stay at ten because the scent is what the customer is choosing.
Straight answer
I want to launch 10 candle SKUs but minimise the number of raw materials I stock — how should I standardise wax, jars, wicks and dyes?
Standardise everything the customer does not choose and let the fragrance carry the variety: one wax for all ten, two jar formats (one per price point), one wick type per format chosen by burn test, one wick sticker, and two dyes plus uncoloured. In CSI's range that can be Natural Soy Pearl (the only soy wax with a bulk step, ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg — no ceiling published, so all ten oils must pass in it), the Salsa jar with cap and the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin (published fill), Eco Thick C2 and Thin C1 as wick candidates, and liquid red and blue. That is 18 materials with the ten oils, against 31 for an unplanned wish-list. For six Salsa SKUs and four tin SKUs at 30 each, the standardised CSI order is ₹55,090.76. Each extra material — a second wax, a third jar, a third dye — adds a smallest pack, a remainder, a qualification test and a reorder point; on this plan a second wax alone adds ₹2,762.00 of production wax.
One line: standardise what the customer does not choose; vary only the scent.
Ten SKUs can run on one wax, two jar formats, two wick types, one sticker and two dyes — 18 materials including the ten oils, against 31 for an unplanned wish-list. On this page's range (six scents in Salsa jars, four in 85 g tins, 30 each) the standardised CSI order is ₹55,090.76, built on Natural Soy Pearl Wax.

Every material has a fixed cost before it makes a single candle

A raw material is not just its price per gram. It is a smallest pack, a remainder, a test and a reorder point.

When a maker plans ten SKUs, each one tends to arrive with its own personality: this scent deserves a frosted jar, that one a tin, this one a deeper colour, that one a wooden wick. Each choice looks small. But every distinct material on the list carries four costs that do not depend on how much of it you use. A smallest pack you must buy to have any at all. A remainder after rounding to packs, which sits on the shelf. A qualification test, because a new jar, wax or wick has to be burn-tested with your oils. And a reorder point — one more thing that can run out and stop a SKU.

Standardising is the practice of paying those four costs as few times as possible, while keeping the variety where the customer actually sees it. For a candle range that is almost always the fragrance. The rest — wax, jar, wick, sticker, dye — is the platform, and the fewer versions of it you run, the less cash sits in remainders and the fewer tests stand between you and a restock. The five-scent platform post introduces the platform idea with a single jar; this page extends it to two formats and colour.

The CSI principle
Standardise everything the customer does not choose. Vary only what they do.
Customers choose a scent and a format; they rarely choose a wax or a wick. Spend your material count on the first two.

The five standards for a ten-SKU range

Standardisation decisions · the reason column states what is and is not published
What to standardise, to what, and why
Material Standard CSI option Condition Price
Wax One wax for all ten Natural Soy Pearl Wax Its 6–10% test range must pass with all ten oils; no ceiling published, so test before standardising ₹450.00 → ₹424.80/kg from 5 kg
Jars Two formats: one per price point Salsa 200 ml (cap) + Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g Tin has a published 85 g fill; Salsa fill is not published — weigh a pour ₹29.50 and ₹30.00 each
Wicks One per jar format Eco Thick C2 / Eco Thin C1 (candidates) No wick size per jar is published; two candidates per format, then one ₹9.44 / ₹5.90 each
Wick stickers One Wick Stickers One per wick ₹100.00 / 40
Dyes Two colours + uncoloured Liquid Red + Liquid Blue Shade through dose; dose per the dye's product page — none published here ₹236.00 / 15 g each
Fragrance Not standardised ten oils The variety the customer is buying per scent

Wax. One wax for all ten SKUs is the biggest single simplification. This page uses Natural Soy Pearl Wax because it is the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk step (₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg) and a ten-SKU range reaches it. Its page publishes no fragrance ceiling, no melt point and no pour temperature, so 8% is a working figure in a 6–10% test range and the standard is only valid once all ten oils pass in it. If you want a published ceiling, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (10%) and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (13%) are the alternatives at higher per-kilo prices.

Jars. Two formats give the range two price points without multiplying materials. The Golden Aluminium Tin has a published 85 g fill — one of two published fills in CSI's catalogue — at ₹360.00 for 12. The 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar comes with a golden lug cap (₹29.50 each at 50 and 100), which removes a lid line; its fill is not published, so this page uses an illustrative 170 g — weigh a test pour. A third or fourth jar style would add a smallest pack, a remainder and a wick test each.

Wicks. One wick type per jar format, chosen by test. CSI publishes no wick size per jar, so each format gets two candidates — Eco Thick C2 and Eco Thin C1 — in two test candles each, and the winner becomes the standard for every scent in that format. If one scent fails with the standard wick, record it as an exception rather than adding a wick type for everyone.

Dyes. Two colours plus uncoloured cover a surprising range: different doses of one dye give lighter and deeper shades, and red and blue together commonly give purples — check on test pieces, because CSI publishes no dye dose per kilo and colour depends on wax and oil. Each additional colour is at least a ₹236.00 bottle. The pastel-pink rose post covers colour trials in detail.

Write the standard on one page
List the standard wax, both jars with their weighed fills, the wick per format, the sticker and the dye doses on one sheet, with the date each was proven and the scents it was proven with. When a new SKU is proposed, it starts on that sheet; anything it changes is an exception that has to earn its place. The product-to-BOM template is the sheet each new SKU fills in.

What a little extra variety costs, priced

Variety is not free, but it is not expensive either. It is just easy not to add up.

Here are four common additions to a standardised ten-SKU range, each priced against the standardised plan with CSI's listed packs. None is a reason never to add variety; each is the number to weigh against what the variety earns.

Priced against the standardised plan · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026 · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 · jars and wicks re-checked 4 October 2026
The price of one more material
Addition What changes Extra CSI spend Plus
A second wax for 3 SKUs Three Salsa scents move to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks; Soy Pearl total shrinks ₹2,762.00 on production wax ₹599.00 of test wax, a second remainder (383 g across both waxes), one more reorder point
A third jar for 2 SKUs Two Salsa scents move to Yankee 130 ml at ₹47.20 ₹1,463.20 on jars a new fill to weigh, a wick test in the new jar, one more reorder point
A third wick type One format gets a Cotton Braided option ₹882.39 for one extra 4-candle qualification an extra stock line if it is adopted
A third dye colour One more 15 g liquid dye ₹236.00 minimum colour trials across every SKU that uses it

None of these is large on its own. Together, the second wax, third jar and third dye add ₹4,461.20 to this order before any test cost — and, more importantly, they add three more things that can run out. On a range of ten SKUs, a shortage of a shared material stops all ten; a shortage of a SKU-specific material stops one. Standardising makes the shared materials deep and the specific ones few. Safety stock for materials that stop the whole line picks up from there.

The quiet creep: one exception per SKU. Ten SKUs, each with one small difference — a different jar here, a different colour there — become a range where nothing is shared and every material is bought in its smallest pack. Fix: write the standards first, then admit exceptions only where a SKU fails its test on the standard, and write the exception down with its reason. How much inventory complexity one wax, one jar and a small wick range removes quantifies this for a first launch.

The standardised BOM, stacked and rounded

Per unit, a Salsa candle at an illustrative 170 g and 8% is 13.6 g of oil and 156.4 g of wax; a tin at its published 85 g is 6.8 g and 78.2 g. Thirty of each SKU, 4 wick-test candles per format (in the first scent of each), 3% rejects and 5% pour loss; 2% breakage applies to the glass Salsa jars only — tins do not break.

Buy now, buy after the standards are proven

A standard is a promise that one material works for every SKU it covers, so it has to be proven before it is bought deep. The test stage proves the wick per format and the wax with all ten oils; colour trials prove the two dyes. Wax and jars can be bought early — they are shared by everything and no single result is likely to change them — but production wicks wait for the burn.

1
Write the standards down firstOne wax, two formats, one wick per format, one sticker, two dyes. Every SKU starts on the standard.
2
Weigh the Salsa fillThe tin's 85 g is published; the Salsa's is not. Replace the illustrative 170 g with your weighed fill.
3

4

5

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A standardised range buys fewer kinds of thing from us: one wax instead of three or four, two jar styles instead of six, two dyes instead of six. That is the right way to run ten SKUs. And if your ten scents all pass in Natural Soy Pearl, it is the cheapest container soy wax we sell — ₹424.80 a kilo against ₹507.40 for CSI 464 and ₹599.00 for Chunks. Add variety only where a customer sees it.
Ten SKUs, ten scents, and everything else the same. The range looks wide on the shelf and narrow in the stockroom.

Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, and a standardised range is the fastest to restock when one scent sells out. Send us your ten SKUs, formats and counts on WhatsApp and we will check the standardised order against CSI's listed packs. Larger quantities are quoted; no volume discount figure is published.
Check my standardised range

For a single-jar platform across five scents, shared wax and jars, separate oils. For sizes rather than formats, three sizes in one plan and the 15-SKU grid. For moulded or melt lines that sit outside the platform, sculptural candles and candles plus melts. The budget-side version of this argument is standardising on one jar and one wax, and every new SKU you add later starts with a complete BOM before buying.

Want a third format? Weigh it against the table above: a new jar adds a smallest pack, a remainder, a fill to weigh and a wick test. The Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (₹45.00, published 50 g wax capacity) is the one CSI option whose fill you would not need to weigh.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's shopping list is easy to pad. Every line on this page is computed from a per-unit quantity and an allowance you can see, rounded to the cheapest in-stock pack combination we list, with the leftover shown — including where a smaller or cheaper option means a smaller order from us.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Wick and jar prices were re-checked 4 October 2026. Dye prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24–25 September 2026. Grams, pack rounding, leftovers and ₹ totals are computed to two decimals so you can check them.

The 170 g Salsa fill, 8% load, 30 units per SKU, the six/four format split, 4 wick tests per format, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, spare wicks, the wish-list material count and the example label and box figures are illustrative. They are labelled working assumptions, not standards, and every non-CSI line is an example you replace with your own quote. Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce the number of raw materials for my candle range?
Choose one wax, as few jar formats as your price points need, one wick per format and a small dye set, and test all your scents on that platform. Vary the fragrance, not the base.
Can I use one wax for all my candles?
Usually, if every scent passes in it at its working load and inside its published ceiling where one exists. Natural Soy Pearl publishes none, so test all your oils before standardising on it.
How many jar types should a small candle brand stock?
As few as your price points need — often two. Each extra style adds a smallest pack, a remainder, a fill to weigh and a wick test.
Can one wick work for all fragrances?
Often within one jar and wax, but CSI publishes no wick data per oil. Test the standard wick with each scent and record any exception.
How many candle dye colours do I need?
Fewer than you think: dose changes shade, and red and blue commonly combine into purples. CSI publishes no dye dose per kilo, so trial on test pieces.
Which CSI candle container has a known fill weight?
Two: the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g) and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity). Every other jar's fill must be weighed.
