I Want to Make a Candle That Retails at ₹499 — How Do I Choose Jar, Wax and Fragrance Costs so Enough Margin Remains After Packaging?
शेयर करना
Does a 200 g matte jar candle fit ₹499? At 60% margin with ₹45 packaging, no. A 200 g CSI 464 candle in the matte jar with Lavender costs ₹253.60 in materials, giving about 40% margin.
What build fits the ₹499 example? A 180 g fill in the clear salsa jar with Eco Soy CSI 400 and British Rose at 8% costs ₹145.65 in materials, about 61.79% margin after packaging.
Should I cut fragrance to save money? Usually not. Switching to a lower-cost oil inside its stated range, or a cheaper vessel, protects the scent the customer is paying for.
Start from ₹499 and work down to a materials ceiling
Most makers who aim for ₹499 begin with the nicest jar they can find, add a favourite oil and only then ask whether the price works. By that point the candle is usually ₹60–₹100 over budget and the only lever left is packaging, which is the one thing the customer sees first. Reverse the order. Fix three of your own figures, then let them tell you how much the jar, wax, wick and oil are allowed to cost.
GST assumption for this page: ₹499 is treated as the revenue you keep per candle after GST has been taken out. If ₹499 is your GST-inclusive shelf price, divide it by one plus your applicable rate before you start, and use that smaller figure everywhere below. CSI prices are used exactly as listed on the store.
That ₹154.60 is the number every material choice on this page has to respect. If your margin target or packaging quote is different, rerun the five steps with your own figures; the method does not change.
Four ways to fill the same ₹499 price point
Here are four builds using live CSI prices. Each one uses an 8% fragrance load, measured as a share of total candle weight, which is how this series calculates load. The 200 g builds use the matte 200 ml glass jar at ₹70.80 each (₹708.00 for a pack of 10). The 180 g builds use the clear 200 ml salsa jar at ₹29.50 each when bought in a pack of 100 (₹2,950.00 ÷ 100). The 180 g fill is an example; CSI does not publish the salsa jar's fill weight in grams, so weigh your own filled jar before you lock the recipe.
| Build | Wax | Fragrance oil | Jar | Wick | Materials | Margin after ₹45 packaging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · 200 g, CSI 464, Lavender | 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36 | 16 g × ₹5.221 = ₹83.54 | ₹70.80 | Eco C1 ₹5.90 | ₹253.60 | (₹499 − ₹253.60 − ₹45) ÷ ₹499 = 40.16% |
| B · 200 g, CSI 464, British Rose | ₹93.36 | 16 g × ₹3.068 = ₹49.09 | ₹70.80 | ₹5.90 | ₹219.15 | ₹234.85 ÷ ₹499 = 47.06% |
| C · 180 g, Eco Soy CSI 400, British Rose | 165.6 g × ₹0.399 = ₹66.07 | 14.4 g × ₹3.068 = ₹44.18 | ₹29.50 | ₹5.90 | ₹145.65 | ₹308.35 ÷ ₹499 = 61.79% |
| D · 180 g, CSI 464, British Rose | 165.6 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹84.03 | ₹44.18 | ₹29.50 | ₹5.90 | ₹163.61 | ₹290.39 ÷ ₹499 = 58.19% |
Only build C clears the 60% example target. Build D misses it by under two points, which you could recover with a cheaper box. Builds A and B are perfectly good candles, but they belong at a higher price. That is the honest finding: at ₹499, the matte 200 ml jar alone takes ₹70.80 of a ₹154.60 allowance, and Lavender at 1 kg pricing is one of the dearer oils per gram. Neither is wrong; they simply do not fit this price with this packaging budget.
Which lever moves the margin most
When a build sits over the ceiling, makers tend to cut fragrance first. That is usually the wrong lever, because fragrance is what the customer pays for. Look at the gaps in the table instead. Moving from the matte jar to the salsa jar saved ₹41.30 per candle (₹70.80 − ₹29.50). Moving from CSI 464 to CSI 400 at the 180 g fill saved ₹17.96 (₹84.03 − ₹66.07). Moving from Lavender to British Rose at 16 g saved ₹34.45 (₹83.54 − ₹49.09). The vessel was the biggest single lever.
Fragrance: choose the oil, keep the load
Dropping from 8% to 6% saves money but weakens the throw the customer judges you on. A better move at ₹499 is to choose oils whose 1 kg price per gram is lower and whose product page gives a load range you can sit comfortably inside. British Rose (up to 10% soy, 0% vanillin, flashpoint 192°C), Citrus Lemon (₹2,832.00 per kg) and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3,068.00 per kg) all cost far less per candle than Lavender or Dark Vanilla. Keep the dearer oils for a higher price tier rather than starving them at 6%.
Wax: test before you economise
CSI 400 has no published fragrance load, so 8% in that wax is something you must prove with burn tests, not assume. CSI 464 states up to 10%. If CSI 400 fails to hold 8% cleanly in your tests, fall back to build D and find the missing two margin points in packaging rather than in the oil.
Wick and jar
An Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90 is a sensible first candidate for a jar of this size, but CSI publishes neither the salsa jar's diameter nor a wick sizing chart. Test Eco C1 against Eco C2 (₹9.44 each) in your filled salsa jar. If C2 wins, your build C materials rise to ₹149.19 (₹145.65 − ₹5.90 + ₹9.44), still under the ceiling.
Prove the ₹499 build before you buy for production
A cheaper recipe only counts if it burns well. Before you order 100 units of anything, run a small comparison between build C and build D so you know whether the cheaper wax earns its place. Five test candles per wax is a suggested starting point; it lets you burn a few and keep a couple back for cure checks.
Your test-first and production shopping lists
The test list below covers both waxes so the comparison is fair. The production list assumes build C passed and you are making a first batch of 100 candles at 180 g.
| Stage | Item | Pack | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | Eco Soy CSI 400 | 1 kg | ₹399.00 | Enough for five 180 g candles (5 × 165.6 g = 828 g) |
| Test | Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | The comparison wax with a stated load up to 10% |
| Test | British Rose | 100 g | ₹342.20 | Five candles need 5 × 14.4 g = 72 g, so one pack covers one build; buy two packs (₹684.40) for both |
| Test | Clear 200 ml salsa jar | 2 × 5 pcs | ₹401.20 | ₹200.60 per pack of 5 |
| Test | Eco C1 wicks | 20 | ₹118.00 | Add a 10-pack of Eco C2 at ₹94.40 for the backup test |
| Production (100) | Eco Soy CSI 400 | 17 × 1 kg | ₹6,783.00 | 100 × 165.6 g = 16.56 kg; 17 × ₹399.00 |
| Production (100) | British Rose | 1 kg + 500 g | ₹4,661.00 | 100 × 14.4 g = 1,440 g; ₹3,068.00 + ₹1,593.00 |
| Production (100) | Clear 200 ml salsa jar | 100 pcs | ₹2,950.00 | ₹29.50 each |
| Production (100) | Eco C1 wicks | 100 | ₹590.00 | Swap for Eco C2 at ₹944.00 if C2 won your test |
The test spend with two Rose packs and the C2 backup comes to ₹2,204.40 (₹399.00 + ₹507.40 + ₹684.40 + ₹401.20 + ₹118.00 + ₹94.40). That is small money set against a 100-unit order of about ₹14,984.00 (₹6,783.00 + ₹4,661.00 + ₹2,950.00 + ₹590.00), and it is the only way to know whether the cheaper wax is genuinely good enough to carry your name.
One last honest note. If your tests show the 200 g matte jar is what makes the candle feel worth ₹499 to your customers, do not force it into this budget by cutting oil. Raise the price, or move that jar into your next tier, and keep the ₹499 candle lean and well scented.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
