Shopping list · First formula
Yes, start small, but not too wide. Three waxes, two wicks and one oil in the jar you will sell teach you more than six of everything.
₹3.89
extra materials cost per test candle from small packs versus wholesale
Quick answers — read this first
Should a beginner buy small packs of several waxes? Yes, but keep it to two or three container waxes in 500 g packs, poured in the exact jar you plan to sell, with one fragrance so the wax is the only variable.

How many wicks should I test first? Two neighbouring options, such as Eco C1 and C2, in your jar. CSI publishes no sizing chart, so the burn test chooses, not a table.

Is it more expensive to test from small packs? Slightly. In this example a test candle costs ₹236.86 from small packs against ₹232.97 at wholesale prices, a difference of ₹3.89.

When should I move to 10 kg of wax? After two test rounds and a first sale batch, once the wax, oil and wick are fixed and customers are reordering.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. Test two or three waxes and two wicks with one oil in small packs first; wholesale packs come after a fixed, passing formula.
Cost: Two test rounds cost ₹6,478.92 in this example, against ₹10,885.00 for wax, oil and wicks bought wholesale first.
Limit: Three waxes at most in round one, or the test grid becomes too big to read.

Straight answer
I Want to Sell Candles on Instagram but Have Never Formulated One — Should I First Buy Small Quantities of Several Waxes and Wicks Rather Than Committing to Wholesale Packs?
Yes. If you have never formulated a candle, buy small packs of two or three container waxes and two neighbouring wicks first, and pour them with one fragrance in the exact jar you intend to sell. In this example, 500 g each of CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 100 g of Lavender, Eco C1 and C2, and ten 150 g apothecary jars make a six-candle first round. With basic tools that round costs ₹4,214.40, and a second round testing more oils in the winning wax brings the total to ₹6,478.92. Buying wholesale first would cost ₹10,885.00 before jars, for a formula you have not yet seen burn.
One line: start narrow, change one thing at a time, and let the second round, not the first, decide what you buy in bulk.
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 comes in a 500 g pack at ₹260.00, enough for three 150 g test candles, so a first wax trial does not require a 10 kg commitment.

Why a first-time maker should not start with wholesale packs

Your first candles are lessons, so buy the materials in lesson-sized packs.

You have a product idea and an audience to sell to, but you have never poured a candle that you would put your name on. That is a perfectly normal place to start, and it changes how you should buy. A wholesale pack makes sense when you know the wax, the oil, the load and the wick. Right now you know none of those, so a 10 kg bag is not a saving. It is a bet on a formula you have not yet seen.

Look at what wholesale-first would cost. A 10 kg bag of CSI 464 is ₹5,074.00, a kilogram of Lavender is ₹5,221.00, and 100 Eco C1 wicks are ₹590.00. That is ₹10,885.00 before a single jar, committed to one wax, one oil and one wick. If any of the three turns out wrong for your jar, most of that money sits on a shelf.

Buying small packs of several materials is the right instinct. The mistake to avoid is going too wide: five waxes, four wicks and six oils produce a test grid of 120 candles that no beginner can pour consistently, burn safely or compare honestly. Narrow is what makes small packs useful.

Round one: three waxes, two wicks, one oil

For this worked example, the product you plan to sell is a 150 g candle in the clear apothecary jar with a golden lid. Its page gives an outer rim of about 7 cm, a base of about 6.5 cm, a 150 g fill and a note that it is safe for hot pour up to 85°C. At a suggested 8% load, each candle is 138 g of wax and 12 g of oil.

Choose three container waxes that differ in a way you can see: CSI 464 flakes, a 100% soy single-pour wax; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, with a stated maximum load of 13% of wax weight; and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, a coconut-soy blend with a published melt point of 50 to 53°C. Use one oil, Lavender, so that any difference you notice comes from the wax. Test two neighbouring wicks, Eco C1 and Eco C2, because CSI publishes no wick sizing chart and only a burn test can choose.

Test grid
Round one: six 150 g candles, Lavender at 8%
Candle Wax (500 g pack) Wick What you are watching
A1 CSI 464, ₹260.00 Eco C1 Top finish, adhesion, melt pool
A2 CSI 464 Eco C2 Same, with a larger flame
B1 Chunks, ₹299.00 Eco C1 Top finish against A1
B2 Chunks Eco C2 Throw against A2
C1 CSI 468, ₹325.00 Eco C1 Surface and glass contact
C2 CSI 468 Eco C2 Melt pool speed and soot

Each 500 g pack covers the two candles at 2 × 138 g = 276 g and leaves 224 g, enough for one more candle in the winning wax. The six candles use 72 g of Lavender, leaving 28 g, which is two more candles for round two.

Why not every wax at once

CSI also lists Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Eco Soy CSI 400, and both are reasonable container waxes. Neither is sold in a 500 g pack: Pearl starts at 1 kg for ₹450.00 and CSI 400 at 1 kg for ₹399.00. Adding both would make round one ten candles instead of six and leave you with most of two kilograms you may not use. Neither page publishes a fragrance load, either, so you would be guessing at a starting percentage. Keep them for a later round if the pearlescent finish of Pearl matters to your look, or if none of the first three waxes gives you the top you want.

Round one shopping list, ₹4,214.40

Three 500 g waxes ₹884.00; Lavender 100 g ₹540.00; ten apothecary jars ₹944.00; Eco C1 20 ₹118.00; Eco C2 10 ₹94.40; one sheet of wick stickers ₹100.00; weighing scale ₹354.00; pen thermometer ₹354.00; large steel pitcher ₹708.00; five bamboo stirrers ₹118.00. If you have no safe way to melt wax, add the 1 litre Mini Electric Melter at ₹2,360.00. The scale and thermometer are not optional for a first formula. Without them you cannot repeat a result, and a result you cannot repeat is not a formula.

How to read a first round when you have nothing to compare it with

1
Record everything at the pour.Wax weight, oil weight, the temperature you added oil at, the temperature you poured at, and the room. Add oil below its published flashpoint; Lavender's is not published, so request the MSDS from CSI on WhatsApp.
2
Photograph the tops after setting.Your buyers will see the surface before they smell anything. Note frosting, rough patches and pull-away from the glass.
3
Cure before judging. The soy pages state 48 to 72 hours before burn testing. Smell each candle cold at that point and again a few days later.
4
Burn in sessions, side by side.As a suggested starting point, burn each candle for a few hours per session over several sessions, never unattended, and stop any candle that smokes or flares.
5
Pick one wax and one wick. Not the best smell in the room, but the candle whose top, melt pool and flame you would be happy to show a stranger.
If none of the six looks right. Change one thing, not three. If every C2 candle runs hot and every C1 candle leaves wax on the walls, the answer is a wick between them or a change of load, not a fourth wax.

Round two, then a first batch, then wholesale

Round two keeps the winning wax and wick and introduces the fragrances you want to sell. Suppose CSI 464 with Eco C1 won. Buy 1 kg of CSI 464 at ₹507.40, 100 g of Woody Oud at ₹453.12, 100 g of Zesty Lemon at ₹360.00, and another ten jars at ₹944.00, a round-two total of ₹2,264.52. Pour two candles of each oil, including Lavender from the 28 g left, which uses six of the jars and 828 g of wax. Zesty Lemon's page suggests starting at 8% and assessing after a 72 hour cure, which suits this plan.

The two rounds together cost ₹4,214.40 + ₹2,264.52 = ₹6,478.92. You now hold a formula, at least one approved oil, spare jars and every tool you need.

The next step is still not wholesale. Make a first sale batch of, say, 20 candles, a suggested starting size. Twenty candles at 138 g need 2,760 g of wax, so a 5 kg bag of CSI 464 at ₹2,537.00 covers them with room for a retest. Only when that batch sells and customers come back does a 10 kg bag and a 1 kg bottle earn its place.

What small packs really cost you

A round-one candle uses 138 g of wax at ₹260.00 ÷ 500 = ₹0.52 per gram, which is ₹71.76, plus 12 g of Lavender at ₹5.40 per gram, ₹64.80, plus the jar at ₹944.00 ÷ 10 = ₹94.40 and a C1 at ₹5.90, for ₹236.86. The same candle at 10 kg and 1 kg prices is 138 × ₹0.5074 = ₹70.02, plus 12 × ₹5.221 = ₹62.65, plus ₹94.40 and ₹5.90, for ₹232.97. The flexibility of small packs costs ₹3.89 per test candle. Neither figure includes packaging, labels, labour, shipping or GST.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

To test: round one at ₹4,214.40 and round two at ₹2,264.52, as listed above, plus the Mini Electric Melter only if you need a heat source. Once validated: a 5 kg bag of the winning wax for the first sale batch, then 10 kg packs and 500 g or 1 kg bottles of the oils customers reorder, with Eco wicks bought to the count you need, since they cost the same per wick in every pack.

Beginner's rule
Never change two things between test candles. If the wax and the wick both change, you will not know which one made the difference, and you will have to pour the test again.

A 500 g pack of three different waxes will teach you more than 10 kg of one. Come back for the large bag when you know it is the right one.
A result you cannot repeat is not a formula.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

what is the best wax for beginners making candles to sell
There is no single answer for every jar, which is why a beginner should compare two or three. CSI 464 is a single-pour container soy that a reviewer called easy to work with for beginners; test it beside Chunks or CSI 468 in your own jar.
how many test candles should a beginner make
As a suggested starting point, six for the first round: three waxes with two wicks, all in one oil. Then about six more for fragrances in the winning wax. A larger grid becomes hard to pour and compare consistently.
should I test several fragrance oils at the same time as waxes
No. Keep one oil while comparing waxes and wicks, so the wax is the only change. Add more oils in a second round, once the wax and wick are fixed.
is it cheaper to buy candle wax in bulk as a beginner
Per gram, sometimes slightly. Per decision, rarely. In this example a small-pack test candle costs only ₹3.89 more than at wholesale prices, while wholesale-first ties up ₹10,885.00 in an untested formula.
do I need a thermometer to make candles
Yes, if you want repeatable results. You need to add fragrance below its published flashpoint and record the temperatures you pour at. The Pen Thermometer costs ₹354.00; CSI does not publish its range or accuracy, so check it against a second reading if you can.
what wick should I use for a 7 cm candle jar
CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, so no size can be promised. For a jar around 7 cm, test Eco C1 and Eco C2 side by side with your oil and load, and choose by melt pool, flame and soot over several burns.
