Buyer question · scaling efficiently
When fragrance is a third or more of what each candle costs to make, small changes in how you buy and use it move the whole business. Most of the saving is not in the price. It is in how much oil goes into each candle and how much never reaches one.
24.9%
less fragrance spend on a 1,000-candle month (₹1,25,145.72 → ₹93,986.43) from four levers, before any negotiated price · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How can I reduce fragrance oil costs without losing scent throw? Pull levers in this order: find the lowest load that throws as well (blind burn test), cut wastage, buy break oils in bigger packs, add a value tier for entry candles, then ask for a quote on the rest. See the five levers.

Which lever saves the most? Load, usually. On the example month, moving from 9% to 8% saves ₹13,905.08; each load point is worth about ₹13,021.88 a month at 1 kg prices. Wastage and pack sizing together add ₹7,065.62.

Do bigger packs make fragrance cheaper? Only for oils with a real break. In this mix, Jasmine's kilo is 8.8% cheaper than its 100 g; Santal Noir's is 0.8%. Across the catalogue, 24 oils save 5% or more at 1 kg and 52 are within 1%.

What should I not do to save money? Do not swap your lead scent for a cheaper oil without telling customers, do not drop load below where throw holds, and do not buy months of stock hoping for a discount the price list does not show.
The short answer
Levers, priced: Load 9% → 8%: ₹13,905.08 · Wastage 6% → 3%: ₹3,148.32 · 100 g → 1 kg packs: ₹3,917.30 · Entry tier added: ₹10,188.60 · total ₹31,159.29 a month.
Performance guard: Every lever that touches the candle (load, tier mix) is gated by a blind side-by-side burn test. Levers that do not (wastage, packs, quote) have no performance risk.
Quote: After levers 1–4, each 1% negotiated on ₹93,986.43 is ₹939.86 a month. Negotiate or upsize at 5–10 kg a month covers the conversation.

Straight answer
I'm scaling my candle business and fragrance oil is one of my biggest raw-material costs — how can I buy more efficiently without sacrificing performance?
Pull five levers, in this order, and protect performance with a burn test wherever a lever touches the candle. 1. Load: find the lowest load that throws as well as your current one in a blind side-by-side test; on a 1,000-candle month of 200 g candles, moving from 9% to 8% saves ₹13,905.08. 2. Wastage: weigh every pour and scrape every jug; 6% down to 3% saves ₹3,148.32. 3. Pack sizing: buy by the kilo, and first for oils where the kilo is genuinely cheaper; here that saves ₹3,917.30; the biggest rupee saving is on the highest-volume oil, and the only real price break in the mix is Jasmine. 4. Tier mix: give entry-price candles their own value oil, such as Cinnamon Vanilla, rather than your premium vanilla; that saves ₹10,188.60. Together, oil spend falls from ₹1,25,145.72 to ₹93,986.43 a month, 24.9% less, with the same lead scents in the same candles. 5. Quote: bring the leaner monthly volume to a quote on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published, but each 1% is worth ₹939.86 a month. What not to do: silently swap your lead scent for a cheaper oil, cut load below where throw holds, or buy months of stock chasing a price break that, for most oils, the listed catalogue does not have.
One line: use less oil well before paying less for it — then ask for a better price on what you still need.
The one pack change in this plan with a real price saving: Jasmine in 1 kg packs, ₹3,923.00 (₹3.92 a gram) against ₹4.30 at 100 g. On 200 candles a month at 16 g with 3% wastage, that is ₹1,242.59 saved every month with no change to the candle.
Buy Jasmine 1 kg

The starting point

Efficiency starts with an honest number. How many grams of oil does each candle really take, including the ones that never reach a jar?

The example is a growing brand pouring 1,000 candles of 200 g a month in four scents. Dark Vanilla is the lead at 400 candles, then Lavender at 300, Jasmine at 200 and a premium Santal Noir at 100. The team pours at 9% because early candles seemed weak, loses about 6% of oil to jugs, spills and rejects, and still buys in 100 g bottles out of habit. That is 19.08 kg of oil a month, costing ₹1,25,145.72, or ₹125.15 of fragrance per candle. Fragrance is 40.3% of each candle's material cost (oil, wax, wick and jar).

Starting point · 1,000 candles of 200 g · 9% load · 6% wastage · 100 g prices · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
The monthly fragrance bill before any changes · ₹1,25,145.72
Oil Candles Oil with 6% ₹/g at 100 g Monthly cost Per candle
Dark Vanilla 400 7,632 g ₹7.90 ₹60,292.80 ₹150.73
Lavender 300 5,724 g ₹5.40 ₹30,909.60 ₹103.03
Jasmine 200 3,816 g ₹4.30 ₹16,408.80 ₹82.04
Santal Noir 100 1,908 g ₹9.19 ₹17,534.52 ₹175.35
Total 1,000 19,080 g ₹1,25,145.72 ₹125.15

Every number in that table is a habit rather than a decision: the load, the wastage and the pack size. Habits are where the savings are. None of the levers below needs a cheaper oil for your lead scents, and the two that touch the candle are gated by a burn test. For the wider context, see how many kilos a small manufacturer needs a month and bulk pricing for small businesses.

The five levers, priced

Applied in order to the same 1,000-candle month · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
What each lever saves, and what protects performance
Lever Change Monthly saving % of start Performance guard
1 · Load optimisation 9% → 8% after a blind side-by-side burn ₹13,905.08 11.1% Hot throw scored equal or better at 8%
2 · Wastage 6% → 3%: weigh, scrape jugs, pour to the gram ₹3,148.32 2.5% None — same candle
3 · Pack sizing All four oils from 100 g to 1 kg ₹3,917.30 3.1% None — same oil
4 · Tier mix 200 of 400 vanilla candles become an entry line in Cinnamon Vanilla ₹10,188.60 8.1% Different product; test and price it separately
5 · Consolidated quote Each 1% on the remaining monthly oil spend ₹939.86 per 1% — None — same oil
Levers 1–4 together ₹31,159.29 24.9%

The order matters. Load and wastage come first because they reduce the grams you buy, which makes every later saving smaller in rupees but larger in effect: there is no point negotiating a price on oil you did not need. Pack sizing comes next because it is free. Tier mix comes fourth because it is a product decision, not a purchasing one. The quote comes last, on a lean, predictable monthly volume. After levers 1–4, fragrance is 33.5% of each candle's material cost, down from 40.3%.

The CSI principle
Use less oil well before you pay less for it.
Load and wastage are fully in your control and carry no supplier risk. Price is partly in someone else's hands. Fix what you control first, then bring a smaller, cleaner number to the conversation you do not control.

Lever 1: the load

Every percentage point of load is 2 g of oil in every 200 g candle. At 1,000 candles, that is 2 kg a month.
Same four-scent mix · 3% wastage · 1 kg prices · 200 g candle
What each load costs on 1,000 candles a month
Load Oil per candle Oil a month Monthly cost Per candle
6% 12 g 12.36 kg ₹78,131.27 ₹78.13
7% 14 g 14.42 kg ₹91,153.15 ₹91.15
8% 16 g 16.48 kg ₹1,04,175.02 ₹104.18
9% 18 g 18.54 kg ₹1,17,196.90 ₹117.20
10% 20 g 20.60 kg ₹1,30,218.78 ₹130.22

Each point of load is worth about ₹13,021.88 a month on this mix. That is why load is the first lever, and why it needs the strictest test. A load that is too high does not add throw once the wax and wick are saturated; a load that is too low makes a weak candle that customers do not reorder. The right load is the lowest one that performs as well as your current candle, in your wax, your jar and with your wick. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%; those are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not targets.

Track grams per candle, not percent
A load written as 8% hides drift. Record the grams of oil actually used per batch divided by candles poured. If the answer creeps from 16.0 g towards 16.5 g, that is ₹3,823.00 a month on a 1,000-candle Dark Vanilla run, and nobody decided it.
1
Pour three candles per load for your lead scentYour current load (9% here), one point lower and two points lower, all in the production jar, wax and wick, poured on the same day.
2
Cure them identicallySame room, same time. Judge them at the same age as the candles you sell.
3
Blind test with three peopleCode the candles. Score hot throw at one and two hours, walking in from outside the room, on a 1–5 scale.
4
Check the wick at the lower loadA lower load can change how the candle burns. Confirm a full melt pool and a clean flame before you decide.
5
Adopt the lowest load that scores equalNot the lowest load that is "fine". Equal to what customers already buy, or better.
6
Repeat for each scentDifferent oils throw differently. A vanilla may hold at 8% and a citrus need 9%. Load is set per scent, not per range.
The saving that costs customers. Dropping load across the whole range because one scent tested well lower. Customers who buy the same scent every month notice a weaker candle before you do, and the reorders stop quietly. Set load scent by scent, and never below the level that won the blind test.

Levers 2 and 3: wastage and packs

Wastage is oil you paid for that never reached a candle: the film left in a pouring jug, a spill, a candle rejected for a sinkhole, a test pour nobody recorded. The series working assumption is 3–5%. At 6%, this business loses 0.96 kg a month at an 8% load. Weighing oil into each batch, scraping jugs into the next batch of the same scent, and fixing the cause of rejects brings it down to 3%, saving ₹3,148.32 a month with no change to the candle at all.

Pack sizing is the free lever, with a caveat. On CSI's listed catalogue, the reliable per-gram step is from 15 g to 100 g (a median 23.1% premium on 15 g). From 100 g to 1 kg, 52 of 91 oils are within 1% per gram, and 24 save 5% or more. So moving from 100 g bottles to 1 kg saves little on most oils and a lot on a few. Here is the mix:

8% load · 3% wastage · per-gram at 100 g vs 1 kg · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Where the pack change actually saves
Oil Candles Oil a month ₹/g at 100 g ₹/g at 1 kg Monthly saving Step
Dark Vanilla 400 6,592 g ₹7.90 ₹7.65 ₹1,674.37 3.2%
Lavender 300 4,944 g ₹5.40 ₹5.22 ₹884.98 3.3%
Jasmine 200 3,296 g ₹4.30 ₹3.92 ₹1,242.59 8.8%
Santal Noir 100 1,648 g ₹9.19 ₹9.12 ₹115.36 0.8%

In rupees, Dark Vanilla saves most because it is the biggest volume, but only at 3.2%. Jasmine's 8.8% is the only real price break in the mix; Lavender saves 3.3% and Santal Noir under 1%. The total, ₹3,917.30, is real but modest. At 1,000 candles a month the bigger benefit of 1 kg packs is operational: fewer bottles to open, fewer reorders, less chance of running out. For the oils with the biggest kilo breaks across the whole catalogue, including Mango Coconut (20.7%), Verbena (20.0%) and Eucalyptus Spearmint (13.3%), the pack lever is much stronger. And watch for anomalies: Saffron Cedarwood is cheaper per gram at 500 g than at 1 kg.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if we told you that buying bigger is the main way to cut fragrance costs. On our own listed prices, it is the third lever of five, and for most oils it saves little per gram. Using 2 g less oil per candle, where the burn test allows, is worth far more than any pack size. Fix load and wastage first; they are yours to control and cost nothing.

Levers 4 and 5: tier mix and the quote

Tier mix is a product decision with a cost effect. The example brand sells 400 Dark Vanilla candles a month, some at gift prices and some as its entry candle. Dark Vanilla costs ₹7.65 a gram at 1 kg; Cinnamon Vanilla costs ₹4.55. Moving 200 of those candles to a separate entry line scented with Cinnamon Vanilla saves ₹10,188.60 a month. The guard is honesty: it is a different candle with a different name and price, tested on its own merits, not Dark Vanilla made cheaper. Fragrance oils for a small candle brand and for a premium brand cover how tiers work.

Per candle · oil only · 8% load · 3% wastage · 1 kg prices
What a tier structure looks like per candle
Tier Oil ₹/g at 1 kg Oil per candle Use it for
Entry Cinnamon Vanilla ₹4.55 ₹75.06 Everyday and entry-price candles
Core Jasmine ₹3.92 ₹64.65 The main range
Core Lavender ₹5.22 ₹86.04 The main range
Premium Dark Vanilla ₹7.65 ₹126.01 Signature and gift candles
Luxury Santal Noir ₹9.12 ₹150.30 Limited, higher-priced pieces

The quote comes last. After the first four levers, the monthly oil spend is ₹93,986.43 for 16.48 kg in 1 kg packs, a cleaner, more predictable order than the one you started with. Bring it to CSI on WhatsApp with three months of usage by oil and your forecast. No volume discount figure is published, so we will not suggest one; the arithmetic is that each 1% is worth ₹939.86 a month, ₹11,278.37 a year. Negotiating versus bigger packs sets out what to include, and consolidating to one supplier covers wax, wicks and jars in the same order.

The same levers apply to wax. At 1,000 candles a month, 189.5 kg of wax at 3% wastage. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg and ₹5,999.00 for 10 kg; CSI 464 is ₹5,074.00 for 10 kg, so 190 kg as nineteen 10 kg packs costs ₹96,406.00 against ₹1,13,981.00, ₹17,575.00 a month less; Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg. A wax change is a performance change, though: test it with the same blind burn as a load change, and never change wax and load in the same month.

Efficiency at scale is mostly measurement: grams per candle, loss per batch, per-gram price at the size you buy, and hot-throw scores that tell you when a saving has gone too far. The price of candle fragrance oil covers the per-candle method, calculating bulk requirements the quantity side, and the ₹5,000 first order is where this series of buyer questions started.

The cheapest gram of fragrance oil is the one you never needed to pour.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The levers that save most on this page — lower load where it performs, less wastage — reduce how much oil you buy from us. We put them first because on our own listed prices they are worth more than pack sizing, which for most oils saves little per gram.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices used in the material-share figures are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Every pack referenced was in stock on the pull date. Savings, shares and per-candle figures are arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

The example brand, its scent mix, starting load (9%) and wastage (6%) are illustrations. Your savings depend on your own load tests and losses. No volume discount figure is published or implied. Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce the cost of fragrance oil in candles?
Find the lowest load that performs equally in a blind burn test, cut wastage to about 3%, buy oils with real kilo breaks in 1 kg packs, add a value tier for entry candles, then ask for a volume quote. On the example month those steps cut oil spend by 24.9%.
What is the ideal fragrance load for soy candles?
The lowest load that throws as well as your current candle in your wax, jar and wick. 8% is a common working load. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% (wax makers' stated maximums).
Does a higher fragrance load mean a stronger candle?
Only up to a point. Beyond what the wax and wick can carry, extra oil adds cost, not throw. Wick size and cure time often matter as much as load; check them before raising it.
How much fragrance oil is wasted in candle making?
Plan 3–5% as a working assumption for pour loss and test burns. Weighing every batch, scraping jugs into the next pour of the same scent and fixing the causes of rejects keeps it near 3%.
Is it cheaper to buy fragrance oil in 1 kg?
For about a quarter of oils, yes: 24 of 91 save 5% or more at 1 kg against 100 g. For 52 the price per gram is within 1%, so the kilo buys convenience rather than a lower rate.
Can I get a better price on fragrance oil as my business grows?
Pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published. Bring monthly usage by oil and a forecast. On a ₹93,986.43 month, each 1% is ₹939.86.
Less oil, well used, then a better price
