My 8 cm Oud Candle Produces a Large Flame but Still Doesn’t Create Strong Room-Filling Fragrance — Why Doesn’t a Hotter Burn Automatically Mean Better Hot Throw?
शेयर करना
How do I check? A blind character check. Burn your current (hot) wick and one rung down side by side, plus one unscented candle on the hot wick. At 1 hour and 3 hours, three people who don't know the codes tick words on a sheet: the page's notes (saffron, rose, sandalwood) and off-notes (burnt, smoky, sharp, flat).
What does it show? If the hot wick loses the named notes by 3 hours and gains off-notes the unscented candle also has, heat is distorting the oud. Move down a rung. If both wicks read the same, heat isn't your problem; look at the room, cure, load and the oil itself.
What does it cost? Five 200 g candles: 64 g of White Royal Oud, 936 g of wax, ₹1,048.21 in materials in your own jars, or just ₹94.40 for a C2 pack if you own the rest.
Four reasons a bigger flame doesn't fill the room
1. The surface is fixed once the pool is full. Fragrance leaves the candle from the liquid pool. A bigger wick gets the pool to the glass sooner; after that, extra heat goes into depth. The evaporating surface stops growing at the jar's inside diameter (the numbers are in the next section).
2. A flame has its own smell. Soot and smoke from an oversized or untrimmed wick are commonly described as burnt or fuel-like, and they are made at the flame, not by the oil. On a light floral they stand out as a fault. On an oud, whose own notes lean woody and resinous, they blend in and read as "more oud, but flatter". That is why the check uses an unscented candle on the same wick: it tells you what the flame alone smells like.
3. Heat can change the balance of the oil. Lighter top notes commonly leave a hot pool faster, and long, hot sessions can flatten a layered fragrance towards its heaviest part. That is a tendency, not something CSI has measured. Oud's balance shifting towards plain wood as it burns is a known complaint, and how CSI's oud listings compare on that is the oud-flattening post; this page is about whether your wick's heat is doing it.
4. Noses and rooms. Perceived strength drops with continuous exposure, and a large room, an open door or a ceiling fan dilutes whatever the candle gives. A candle judged by the person who has sat beside it for three hours will usually seem weaker than it is. Fresh, blind noses fix that.
The pool is capped by the glass
Evaporation needs surface. In a jar measured at 8 cm outside, on a 0.35 cm wall (our labelled assumption), the inside is 7.3 cm and the full pool is 41.85 cm² (π r² on the inside radius). If 8 cm is your inside figure, it is 50.27 cm². Measure yours (why the outside figure misleads).
| Quantity | Smaller flame | Bigger flame |
|---|---|---|
| Pool surface once full | 41.85 cm² (7.3 cm inside) | the same 41.85 cm² |
| Time to reach it | longer; rule of thumb about 2.9–3.2 h | shorter |
| Pool depth and temperature | shallower, cooler | deeper, hotter |
| Wax and oil used per hour | less | more |
| Soot, smoke, burnt smells | less likely | more likely |
| Top notes lasting through a session | commonly longer | commonly shorter |
There is one place where a bigger flame genuinely helps: before the pool is full. A 5 cm pool part-way through a first burn is 19.63 cm², only 47% of the full surface. If your candle takes most of a session to reach the glass, room fill will suffer at the start. But a large flame on an 8 cm jar usually gets to the glass early; after that, the extra heat is only depth and smoke.
The character check: hot wick v one rung down
Hold everything but the wick: the same wax bag, White Royal Oud at 8% of total weight (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax in a 200 g fill, our worked example for 8 cm), jar batch, pour temperature, cure and room. The "hot" arm is the wick you use now; the other is one rung down. In CSI terms: Cotton Braided → C2, or C2 → C1. Add one unscented candle on the hot wick.
| Candle | Oil | Wick | Why it's there |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-a, H-b | White Royal Oud 16 g | hot (your current) | Your problem, repeated under control |
| D-a, D-b | White Royal Oud 16 g | one rung down | The cooler burn |
| U | none, 200 g wax | hot | What the flame alone smells like |
| Materials: 64 g of White Royal Oud (₹518.40; 36 g left in the 100 g), 936 g of CSI 464 (₹474.93; 64 g left in the 1 kg), three Cotton Braided and two C2 wicks (₹54.88). Total ₹1,048.21, jars not counted. | |||
Costs are worked examples and exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. From nothing, the cash outlay is ₹1,531.80; if you already own the oil, wax, jars and your current wick, it is ₹94.40 for a C2 pack. Two White Royal Oud 50 g bottles (₹840.00) cost more than the 100 g and hold the same oil.
The descriptor sheet
The top half of the sheet takes its words from the oil's own page, so you are checking whether the notes the page promises actually reach the room. The bottom half lists the off-notes a flame commonly adds. Each sniffer ticks every word they notice and gives one intensity score for the room.
| Group | Word | Tick | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notes | Bright top: bergamot, saffron | ☐ | page top notes |
| Notes | Rose petals | ☐ | page middle notes |
| Notes | Oud, woody | ☐ | page middle notes |
| Notes | Creamy sandalwood, musk | ☐ | page base notes |
| Off-notes | Burnt | ☐ | commonly linked to the flame |
| Off-notes | Smoky, acrid | ☐ | soot and smoke |
| Off-notes | Sharp, fuel-like | ☐ | commonly an oversized or untrimmed wick |
| Off-notes | Flat, dull | ☐ | notes merged into one heavy smell |
| Intensity from the doorway (0–3) | __ | one number | |
With three sniffers and eight words, a column can hold at most 24 ticks. Add them up by group for each candle and time: note ticks and off-note ticks. The diagram above draws a worked example: on the hot wick at 3 hours the bright top, rose and creamy base have faded and the off-notes rise; the unscented candle on the same wick shows the burnt tick too; one rung down still carries the notes at 3 hours.
Reading the sheet
| What the sheets show | Reading | Next |
|---|---|---|
| Distortion at 3 h on the hot wick; unscented candle also ticked burnt or smoky | Heat is distorting the oud. The flame adds its own smell | Move down a rung; carry that wick through full life before approving |
| Distortion at 3 h; unscented candle clean | Heat is changing the oil's balance | Move down a rung, or shorten the printed session; re-sheet at the new setting |
| Both wicks read alike; intensity low on both | Not a heat problem | Check the room, cure and load, and the oil's structure (oud flattening); keep your wick if its burn is otherwise clean |
| One down loses room fill at 1 h (pool slow to reach the glass) | The smaller wick is under-powered at the start | Stay on your wick but trim more strictly, or test a shorter printed session |
| Hot wick smokes visibly or soots the glass | A burn failure before it is a scent question | Move down a rung regardless of the sheet |
Intensity scores rarely settle this on their own. In our worked example the hot wick scores 2.0 at 1 hour and 1.7 at 3 hours, and one rung down scores 1.7 and 2.0: close enough to be noise with three people. The words are what separate them. A candle that smells "burnt, smoky, flat" at 3 hours will lose a customer faster than one that smells slightly softer but still of rose and sandalwood.
If the thing that bothers you is that the oversized wick seems to smell better, a separate checklist tests whether a strong result is hiding a poor burn: the masking post. And if you want the room-fill number itself, measured as throw per gram burned, see throw per gram.
Two ouds, two structures
White Royal Oud is layered: "bergamot and saffron top notes, white royal oud, rose petals, and labdanum middle notes, and creamy sandalwood, ambergris, and soft musk base". Its character depends on the bright top and the rose surviving the burn, which is why it is our worked example: heat has the most to erase. Dark Vanilla Oud is built differently: "opening with vanilla and spicy cardamom, deepening into exotic oud and deep amber, and settling into warm musk and woody cedar". There is less top to lose, but vanilla-rich oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick, so on a hot wick it may drift towards "burnt sugar" and smoke instead. Use its own notes as the sheet's top-half words.
Two neighbouring questions have their own posts. If your oud problem is a mushrooming wick that appeared when you moved from lavender to oud at 10%, untangle oil from load first with the 7.5 cm oud confound test. If you are thinking of running a costly oud at a lower load to save money, the premium-oil-at-6% post sets out where to start the wick. And if the smaller wick seems to reach the glass too slowly, the timing checks in the 45-minute pool post and the four-hours-to-the-edge post help you read the pool before you judge the scent.
| Oil | Stated candle load | Structure (page notes) | Per gram (100 g / 1 kg) | Oil per candle (100 g / 1 kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Royal Oud | 6–10% | bright top, floral heart, creamy base | ₹8.10 / ₹8.10 | ₹129.60 / ₹129.65 |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | 6–10% | vanilla-spice opening, oud-amber heart, musk-cedar base | ₹5.90 / ₹5.69 | ₹94.40 / ₹91.06 |
Both pages describe a "Strong throw"; that is page wording, not CSI measurement. White Royal Oud is flat at ₹8.10 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg, so buying more doesn't lower its per-gram price; Dark Vanilla Oud drops from ₹5.90 to ₹5.69. Neither oil reproduces any particular perfume, and we don't claim they do. To run the second oil too, add a pair of Dark Vanilla Oud candles on each wick (64 g, ₹377.60 from a 100 g bottle).

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oud oils, wicks and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says the likely fix is a cheaper wick rather than a dearer oil, that this check may need nothing new from us, and that CSI has no measured throw data for any oil.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: every size shown is in stock except the Eco C1 10-pack, flagged where it appears. Load and note wording is quoted from the product pages; "Strong throw" is the pages' own claim; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The descriptor words (top half from the White Royal Oud page), the decision rule, the 200 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the room and the diagram's ticks are our judgement or worked examples; the effects of heat on notes and the smell of combustion are commonly reported tendencies, not CSI data. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 200 g fill, 0.35 cm wall and 12 m² room are labelled worked-example inputs; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; both oud oils 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Full-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) is a rule of thumb.
