My Candle Has a Large Flame but Surprisingly Weak Hot Throw — Why Should I Not Assume a Bigger Flame Means Better Fragrance Performance?
शेयर करना
So what controls throw? A full pool, the oil you chose and its load, cure time, and the room you test in. Flame size matters only up to the point where the pool is full and properly warm.
How do I prove it for my candle? A blind sniff test: three candles on your current wick and three one CSI rung down, same oil, load and cure age, sniffed by coded number at fixed distances and times. If the smaller wick scores about the same, the big flame was buying you nothing but risk.
What does it cost? From Cotton Braided, a C2 10-pack (₹94.40). If both wicks throw weakly, the wick is not your problem: test the load or a second oil (a 100 g comparison oil from ₹342.20).

Where hot throw actually comes from
Your symptom, restated: the flame is large (taller than you expect, perhaps flickering), the pool is full or nearly so, and yet a room you expected to fill smells faint. It feels wrong because a bigger fire looks like more output. But fragrance in a container candle reaches the room mainly by evaporating from the hot liquid wax, not by passing through the flame. The flame's job is to melt and warm the pool. Once it does that job well, extra flame has very little extra to give.
The pool's surface area is π × r² of the inside of the jar, once the pool reaches the glass. These are geometry, not burn predictions:
| Inside diameter | Pool surface | What it means for throw |
|---|---|---|
| 7 cm | 38.48 cm² | once full, a bigger flame adds depth and heat, not surface |
| 7.5 cm | 44.18 cm² | about 15% more surface than 7 cm, from the jar alone |
| 8 cm | 50.27 cm² | 30.6% more surface than 7 cm, from the jar alone |
| 8 cm jar, pool only 5 cm wide | 19.63 cm² | 39% of the full surface: this candle cannot throw fully yet |
Two consequences. First, a pool that is not yet full is a real throw problem, and there a bigger wick can help; a 5 cm pool in an 8 cm jar offers only 39% of the surface. That case is the opposite of yours. Second, once the pool is full, throw is mostly about what is in it and how warm it is. A warmer pool evaporates fragrance faster, which is why an under-wicked candle throws weakly. But there is a ceiling to that benefit, and beyond it an aggressive flame trades scent for heat, fuel and soot. An 8 cm oud candle with a large flame and no room-filling scent is the same lesson in a jar-specific post. If the pool you have is not just full but very deep, 6907 separates wick power from the formula.
Then there is what the flame does to the scent itself. Fragrance vapour that drifts into a very hot flame can be burned rather than released into the room, and an oversized wick commonly produces soot and smoke whose own smell sits on top of the fragrance. Both are hedged, common observations, not CSI measurements. If your large flame also smells sharp, burnt or smoky, the scent character question is the harsh-smell post (6909); this one stays with strength.
The causes of weak throw, ranked
The ranking is our judgement for a large flame with weak throw. It separates how the candle is tested and burned from how it was made, and it puts the free checks first.
| Cause | What you'd notice | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The test, not the candle (testing: nose, room, fan) | Strong at first, then "gone"; weak in a big or breezy room; fine to visitors | Fresh noses, a closed room of known size, fan off, fixed stations | Standardise the sniff test | Nothing |
| 2. Not cured long enough (making: time) | Weak at day 1–2, better later | Same candles sniffed at day 3, 7 and 14 | Test at a fixed cure age | Nothing |
| 3. Oversized wick masking and burning scent (making: wick) | Big flame, deep pool, soot or a burnt note, hot glass, no gain over a smaller wick | Blind sniff: current wick against one CSI rung down | Step down one rung | ₹94.40 (C2 10, from Cotton Braided) or ₹118.00 (C1 20, from C2) |
| 4. Load too low or too high (making: load) | Weak at every wick; or oily surface and a struggling, sooty flame at a high load | A 6/8/10% ladder within both ceilings on the chosen wick | The load your nose and burn log pick | Your oil: 48 g for one candle at each rung |
| 5. The oil itself (making: oil choice) | Weak at every wick and load; other oils fine in the same candle | Same wick, load and cure: your oil against a second oil | Change oil | From ₹342.20 (British Rose 100 g) |
| 6. A draught carrying scent away (burning: room) | Flicker; scent fine in a still room, weak with fan or AC | Repeat in still air | Placement and care instructions | Nothing |
If the flame stays large even after a correct trim, 6904 confirms an oversized wick first. Cause 1 deserves its place at the top. Olfactory adaptation is well established: you stop noticing a smell you have been sitting in. A maker who has poured, cured and sniffed the same candle all week is the worst judge of its throw, and a ceiling fan both spreads and dilutes scent. Fix the test before you fix the candle. If you also have a candle that smells strong cold and faint lit, the strong-cold, faint-lit post sorts oil from wax from wick for that pattern.
The blind sniff test: set-up, scoring and approval
The worked example, labelled: your jar is 8 cm inside, the candle is the series default 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax, and your current wick is Cotton Braided. Phase A tests it against C2, three candles each, 6 in total, all in your oil. If you are on C2 now, the arms are C2 and C1.
| Score | Means (at the station) | Note also |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Nothing | — |
| 1 | Faint, only if you look for it | Character: true to the oil? burnt? smoky? |
| 2 | Clear but light | Soot card darker than the other code? |
| 3 | Easily noticed, pleasant | Flame height and pool depth at this time |
| 4 | Strong, fills the space | Glass reading (your non-contact thermometer) |
| 5 | Very strong, close to too much | Room temperature |
In the diagram's illustrative result, the Cotton Braided candles averaged 2.4 at 3 m and C2 averaged 2.6, inside any sensible threshold, while the C2 flame was calmer. The bigger flame bought nothing. Makers commonly report this pattern with an over-wicked candle, but your scores decide, not ours.
Routing the result: wick, load, oil or cure
| Phase A result | Meaning | Next |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller wick scores about the same, burns cleaner | The big flame was adding risk, not scent | Approve the smaller wick through full life; then work on throw (load, oil, cure) |
| Both wicks weak, both full pools | The wick is not the throw problem | Phase B: a 6/8/10% ladder within both ceilings, or a second oil on the smaller wick |
| Smaller wick clearly weaker and short of the glass | Pool area is limiting it; no single CSI rung fits | A pair of smaller wicks, or ask us; keep the formula fixed meanwhile |
| Bigger wick clearly stronger but sooty or hot | Throw is being bought with combustion | Reject it; improve throw in the formula on the smaller wick |
Phase B, if both were weak: on the winning wick, burn 3 candles of a comparison oil at 8% (48 g from a 100 g bottle, 52 g left) beside three of yours, sniffed blind the same way. If the comparison oil fills the room and yours doesn't, it is the oil. If neither does, it is the load, the wax or the cure. A single-candle 6/8/10% ladder in your oil uses 48 g, inside Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's "Up to 10%" and any oil page stating 10%. More oil does not raise throw in a straight line, and past what the wax holds it can sweat and hurt the burn. The strong-cold, weak-hot post in the load series walks through the formula side; large pool, weak throw explains why a bigger wick rarely rescues it.
The CSI buy list, and the step to production
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. One rung down is Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between them, no smaller one than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. If the smaller rung throws as well but won't reach the glass, we can't sell you the size in between because we don't stock it: ask on WhatsApp and we will say what we have.
| You burn now | Test against | Pack and price | Per wick | Left after 3 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided | C2 | C2 10 ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | 7 C2 |
| C2 single | C1 | C1 20 ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 | 17 C1 |
| Performance Wooden | C2 (no narrower wooden wick exists) | C2 10 ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 (wood is ₹49.56 more a candle in 10s) | 7 C2 |
| C1 single | Nothing smaller and tabbed | Check the test and the formula; then ask us | — | — |
| Item | Phase A (6 candles) | Phase A + B (9 candles) |
|---|---|---|
| Eco C2 10-pack | ₹94.40 | ₹94.40 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg + 500 g, ₹767.40 (1,104 g needed, 396 g spare) | 2 × 1 kg, ₹1,014.80 (1,656 g needed, 344 g spare) |
| Your oil | 96 g from stock | 96 g from stock |
| Comparison oil, 100 g | — | British Rose ₹342.20 or Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹354.00 |
| Total | ₹861.80 | ₹1,451.40 (with Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹1,463.20) |
Argued against our own interest: if your sniff test shows the room or the cure was the problem, you need to buy nothing. If both wicks throw weakly, don't buy wicks at all; one 100 g comparison oil is the whole next purchase. And the 1 kg of an oil you have never sniffed in your own wax is never the right first order.
The step to production quantity
Once the smaller wick passes the sniff test and three full-life candles, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 120 candles a month with a 2% allowance is 123 C2 wicks; 100 + 20 + 10 = 130 cost ₹1,227.20 and leave 7. Moving from Cotton Braided to C2 also saves ₹2.56 a candle, ₹307.20 a month at that volume, a side effect, not the reason. C2 is flat per wick, so the 500-pack saves nothing. Skip for now: a bigger wick "for throw" when your pool is already full; a second comparison oil before the first has been sniffed blind; and any 1 kg oil or 500-wick pack before the full-life test passes.
Outside this series: a 7 cm candle with a perfect pool and little room scent is the perfect-pool, weak-throw post; and wicking down a big-flame candle without losing its throw is the wick-down-without-losing-throw post. A flame that only looks impressive is not the same as one that performs, which is 6919's subject; if the big flame also soots the glass, see the soot hub (6921).
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax and oils named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that a bigger wick rarely fixes weak throw, that you may need no new wicks, that a 100 g comparison oil beats a 1 kg gamble, and that we have no half-sizes between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke", the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm", Eucalyptus Spearmint's "up to 10% for soy wax" and British Rose's "up to 10% soy".
The pool areas are geometry. The 2.5–5 cm flame band, the 1 cm wax floor and the 5–6 mm trim are common rules of thumb. The 0–5 scale, the 0.5-point threshold, the sniff room, the diagram's scores, 120 candles a month and the 2% allowance are labelled examples or our judgement. Throw and combustion effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
