CSI Wick Buying · Soot Attribution
Soot on the rim cannot tell you whether the wick, the load or the session length caused it. Twelve candles can: a control and three single-change arms. Only the clean column is allowed to spend money.

Eco C1 20 + C2 10: every wick for a control and three arms · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle leaves black soot around the rim. Is it the wick, the fragrance load or how long it burns? Any of the three, and the soot itself will not tell you which. Change one thing per arm: three candles one wick rung down, three at a lower load, three burned in shorter sessions, beside three control candles that reproduce the soot. The clean arm names the cause.

What do I buy for that? One Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock) for the down-rung arm and one Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) for the other three columns, if you do not already stock them. In the worked example (your 8 cm jar, 200 g of Woody Oud at 8% in CSI 464), the twelve candles use 180 g of oil and 2,220 g of wax: ₹2,044.70 of materials, excluding your jars.

Why not just buy a smaller wick? Because only one of seven possible results calls for one. If the shorter-session arm comes out clean, the fix is a label; if the lower-load arm does, the fix is the formula, which also saves ₹16.10 a candle. A wick bought for a label problem becomes dead stock.

What if every arm still soots? Then none of these three is the cause. Buy nothing more and look at airflow, wick centring and the oil itself.
The short answer
Control: 3 candles of today's build (Woody Oud 8% on C2) burned in the sessions that soot (5 hours here). If the control stays clean, nothing is reproduced: stop.
Arms: A = one rung down (C1, 8%, 5 h) · B = lower load (C2, 6%, 5 h) · C = shorter sessions (C2, 8%, 3.5 h). Three candles each, one pour, one room.
Buy: C1 20-pack ₹118.00 + C2 10-pack ₹94.40 = ₹212.40; Woody Oud and CSI 464 from stock or two 100 g bottles and 2.5 kg.
Release: only "A alone clean" buys production wicks (C1, about 105 a month at 100 candles). B buys nothing and saves oil; C buys labels.
Soot on the rim: which result releases which purchase Worked example: your 8 cm (inside) jar, 200 g of Woody Oud in CSI 464, three candles per column, burned the same days in still air. ● = soot on the rim by the end of the arm ○ = clean · control must soot, or the test has not reproduced the problem. Control A B C C2 8% 5 h C1 8% 5 h C2 6% 5 h C2 8% 3.5 h Result pattern What it releases Control clean too Buy nothing: not reproduced move the test, or check airflow Only A clean Wick: C1 in production ₹3.54 a candle saved Only B clean Load: no wick purchase ₹16.10 a candle saved Only C clean Session: label, no wick stickers ₹0.83 a candle A and B clean Either lever: blind throw decides; never both at once All three clean Marginal: start with label then the cheaper lever None clean None of these three: airflow, centring, oil Order for all four columns: C1 20-pack ₹118.00 + C2 10-pack ₹94.40; twelve candles use 180 g of Woody Oud and 2,220 g of CSI 464. Only one of the seven rows buys wicks for production. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026; worked example, not CSI soot data.
Seven ways the four columns can come out, and what each one lets you buy. Only one row (A alone clean) releases a production wick order. Two rows release no wick at all but change the formula or the label; one row says the test did not reproduce the problem; one says none of the three is the cause. The arms are worth more than their wicks because they stop the wrong purchase.
Straight answer
My candle produces black soot around the rim of the jar. How do I determine whether the wick, fragrance load or burn duration is responsible?
Run an attribution order: four columns of three candles from one pour, burned on the same days in the same still room. The control is today's build burned the way that soots (in the worked example, Woody Oud 8% on Eco C2 in 5-hour sessions). Arm A drops one wick rung (C1) and changes nothing else. Arm B drops the load to 6% on the same wick (still inside the oil page's "candles (6-10%)"). Arm C keeps the build and caps sessions at 3.5 hours. Wipe the rim clean between burns and rate the soot each time. The control must soot, or you have not reproduced the problem. Then read the clean column: A alone clean means the wick, and C1 becomes your production wick (saving ₹3.54 a candle); B alone means the load, which needs no wick and saves ₹16.10 a candle in materials; C alone means burn duration, which needs a label, not a wick. If two arms clean up, choose by a blind throw check and cost. If none does, the cause is something else (airflow, centring, the oil). The wicks for all four columns cost ₹212.40; the candles are the real cost, ₹2,044.70 in materials excluding jars.
One line: change the wick, the load and the session in separate candles; only the clean column is allowed to spend money.
The wick order for all four columns: Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026) and Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). Woody Oud and CSI 464 every size in stock. No production wicks until a single arm comes out clean through the full life.
Eco C1/C2 — from ₹94.40

Why soot on the rim cannot name its own cause

A black ring on the glass is an outcome. Three different habits of the candle can produce it, and the ring looks the same either way.

Soot is unburnt carbon escaping a flame that is getting more fuel than it can burn cleanly, or being disturbed while it burns. On a container candle it commonly lands on the glass above the wax, where the rim stays coolest. Three common routes lead there, and each points to a different purchase:

Three causes, three purchases · commonly cited tendencies, not CSI test data
What each cause tends to do · what the matching arm changes · what you would buy if it is the cause
Cause How it tends to make soot Arm that tests it Purchase if guilty
Wick too large A bigger flame and more fuel than it burns cleanly; carbon builds on the tip A: one rung down, same load, same sessions Production C1 (or the next rung down from yours)
Load heavy for this oil Heavier, resinous oils are commonly linked to more carbon at the wick; more oil can mean a sootier flame B: lower load, same wick, same sessions No wick; less oil per candle
Sessions too long Carbon accumulates through a long burn; the wick lengthens and the flame grows late in the session C: same build, shorter sessions No wick; a label and a printed session length

The ring's position can hint at the route: a band at a particular depth, soot on the lid, a one-sided smear. Reading those patterns is the late soot-band post, and it is worth doing before you pour anything. But a hint is not attribution. Two causes often act together (a slightly big wick in a long session), and the only way to separate them is to change one at a time in candles poured from the same pot.

This is a narrower kit than the general attribution kit, which separates fragrance chemistry, jar and wick-pack variation. Here the oil, jar and wick pack are held still, and the three levers you control on the bench are tested against each other.

Mistake: seeing soot, ordering a smaller wick, and pouring three candles on it. Why it fails: if the smaller wick comes out cleaner, you still do not know whether the shorter flame or the shorter burns in your test did it, and if the real cause was session length, you now own a wick that does not fix it. Three guessed candles cost ₹515.28 in materials, about 4.4 times the C1 20-pack itself. Fix: pour the control and all three arms together: the extra candles are what make the answer usable.

The attribution order, column by column

Twelve candles, two wick packs, one pour. Every column differs from the control in exactly one way.

The worked example: your own jar, 8 cm across the inside (50.27 cm² of pool; CSI lists no jar at 8 cm), a 200 g fill, Woody Oud at 8% of total weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax) in CSI 464, Eco C2. The soot shows after 5-hour sessions, which is how some customers burn on a long evening. The fill and the session lengths are worked examples; weigh your own fill line and use the session length at which your soot appears.

Attribution order · four columns × three candles · 200 g fill
Materials per candle exclude your jar · Woody Oud at ₹4.53/g, CSI 464 at ₹0.51/g, wicks at pack price per wick · all figures declared
Column Wick Load Sessions Oil + wax per candle Per candle Three candles
Control C2 8% 5 h 16 g + 184 g ₹175.30 ₹525.90
A · down-rung C1 8% 5 h 16 g + 184 g ₹171.76 ₹515.28
B · load-down C2 6% 5 h 12 g + 188 g ₹159.21 ₹477.62
C · session-length C2 8% 3.5 h 16 g + 184 g ₹175.30 ₹525.90
All twelve 3 C1 + 9 C2 — — 180 g + 2,220 g — ₹2,044.70

Why 3.5 hours for arm C: a very rough rule of thumb (about an hour per 2.5 cm of width) puts a full pool in an 8 cm jar at about 3.2 hours, so the shorter session still reaches the glass and does not trade soot for tunnelling. Why 6% for arm B: it is the bottom of Woody Oud's stated "candles (6-10%)" and a clear step from 8%; going below the page's range would test a formula you would not sell.

From nothing, that is ₹2,776.44 in cash before jars. If Woody Oud is already in your range, the oil, wax and C2 come from production stock and the new cash is ₹501.00: the C1 pack and the spray. Argued against our own interest: do not buy the 500 g Woody Oud for this; at ₹4.53 a gram it is no cheaper per gram than two 100 g bottles, and the test needs 180 g.

Don't buy yet: no C1 50-pack, no care sticker roll, no new oil. Each of those is the purchase for one particular result, and you have not got a result. The two small wick packs (₹212.40) are the only wicks this page asks you to buy before the arms are read.

Running the twelve candles

An attribution test fails when something other than the arm changes between columns. Hold the room, the days and the trim still.
1
Pour from two pots, the same hourOne pot at 8% for nine candles (control, A, C: 144 g oil and 1,656 g wax), one at 6% for three (arm B: 36 g and 564 g). Same wax bag and oil bottle. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; if your jar states a lower hot-pour limit, the lower figure governs.
2
Label the bases, not the lidsCTL-a/b/c, A-a/b/c, B-a/b/c, C-a/b/c. Lids get swapped; bases do not.
3
Cure togetherThe Woody Oud page says "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing"; many makers wait about a week. All twelve the same.
4
Burn on the same days, in still airControl, A and B for 5 hours; C for 3.5 hours. Same room, no fan or AC vent, candles well apart, full cool-down between sessions, burn within sight. Trim every candle to the same length before each light (about 5–6 mm), so trimming is not a fifth variable.
5
Rate the rim, then wipe itAfter each burn, once cool: photograph the rim from the same angle, rate it 0 (clean), 1 (faint grey), 2 (visible ring), 3 (black band), then wipe the inside of the rim with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth and let it dry fully before the next light.
6
Read at burn 3, confirm through the full lifeMost soot patterns show in the first few long sessions; a column counts as clean only if all three candles stay at 0–1 through the full life (to about 1 cm left), because heat and flame commonly grow lower in the jar.

The minute at which soot first appears inside a session is a second, finer measurement (the soot-onset clock in the coffee soot-with-throw post). It is not needed to attribute the cause, but it is the number you will want if arm C wins and you have to decide what session length to print.

If the control does not soot
Stop and buy nothing. A control that stays clean in your test room means the soot your customers see depends on something your bench does not have: a ceiling fan, a draught by a window, a candle burned beside a door. That is an airflow question (the flicker-or-airflow post), and no wick or load change is justified by it.

Reading the arms: which result buys what

Seven possible results. One buys production wicks.

A column is clean when all three candles stay at 0–1 on the rim scale through the full life; it is sooty when two or three reach 2 or more. One odd candle out of three means re-pour three more of that column before you decide.

Result → purchase · worked example: 100 Woody Oud candles a month
Control must soot · money per month at 100 candles, CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · all figures declared · thresholds are our judgement
Clean columns Reading Purchase Money a month
Control clean as well Not reproduced on the bench Nothing —
A only The wick is too large for this oil and session C1 for production after full life: two 50-packs + a 20-pack (₹708.00) a month ₹354.00 saved on wicks
B only The load is heavy for this oil on this wick No wick. Reformulate to 6% and check throw blind ₹1,609.52 saved on materials
C only Burn duration: clean inside 3.5 h, sooty at 5 h No wick. Print the session length; care stickers ₹82.60 on stickers
A and B Either lever works Choose by a blind throw check, then cost; change one, not both ₹354.00 or ₹1,609.52
All three Marginal: the build is close to the line Label first (cheapest, no reformulation), then the lever with the better throw from ₹82.60
None None of these three is the cause Nothing more; check airflow, centring, the oil (ask us) —

Note the money in row B: dropping Woody Oud from 8% to 6% saves ₹16.10 a candle in materials (4 g less oil at ₹4.53 a gram, 4 g more wax), several times the ₹3.54 the wick change saves. That is not a reason to choose it: the reason must be the clean column and a throw you are still happy with. But it is a reason not to assume the wick is the "cheap fix". For the load arm, the throw check matters more than for the wick arm; how load trades against performance is a formulation question, and why a bigger wick is the wrong response to weak throw is the good pool, weak throw post.

Row C is the one that most often gets misread as a wick problem. A candle that is clean for 3.5 hours and sooty at 5 is usually a candle whose session length needs to be on the label, not a candle with the wrong wick. What session length to print and the care-label wording are the soot-after-long-burns label post; on this page, the purchase is the sticker roll, not a wick.

Mistake: two clean columns (A and B), so change both: C1 and 6%. Why it fails: that combination was never tested. A smaller wick at a lower load may under-wick, tunnel or lose the throw you were proud of. Fix: pick one lever, the one that keeps the better throw in a blind check, and approve it through a full life on three candles. If you want both, test both together as a new column first.

From the clean arm to production

The arm decides the purchase. The formula decides how much of it.

Once one column is clean through the full life, size the order from your own production: units to buy = candles × units per candle × (1 + allowance), with a labelled 5% allowance in our worked example. In the wick branch, 100 Woody Oud candles a month needs 105 C1 a month: two 50-packs and a 20-pack (₹708.00) cover 120. Because C1 and C2 are flat per wick, choose packs that add up to the need: a C1 1,000-pack is ₹5.90 a wick, exactly what the 20-pack costs.

What changes on the shelf, by branch
Worked example: 100 Woody Oud candles a month · your lead time and safety stock set the reorder point
Branch New standing item Stops Records to update
A · wick Eco C1, 105 a month C2 for Woody Oud (C2 stays for products approved on it) Approved wick for this jar + oil + load
B · load Woody Oud at 6%: 12 g a candle Nothing; C2 stays Formula sheet; oil reorder quantity falls
C · session Care stickers, one a candle Nothing; build unchanged Label wording and printed session length

If the wick branch wins, the C2 left on your shelf belongs to products where C2 is approved, not to Woody Oud; how to run that transition against stock and lead time is the wicking-down transition post. If C1 is already your house wick and arm A still soots, CSI lists no smaller sized, tabbed wick: the options below C1 are in the smaller-wick post.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no soot or wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per standard 150 g candle at 8%.

fragrance oil · oud · the oil in the worked example
Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
The worked example's oil, and a good one to attribute soot on: resinous, woody oils are among those commonly linked to more carbon on the wick. The page lists "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk", states "candles (6-10%)", says to "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing" and calls the throw "Strong" (the page's word). So both 8% and the load-down arm's 6% are inside its stated range. Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026; per gram it is ₹4.53 from 100 g to 1 kg, so the 500 g saves nothing per gram over two 100 g bottles. Limitation: CSI has no soot or wick data for this oil; the arms are how you find out.

Skip for this test: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made: a step up, the wrong direction for soot. Performance Wooden Wicks: a new system with its own soot behaviour; its page claims wooden wicks "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot", which is the page's claim to test, not a fix to assume. A second oud: changing the oil is a fourth variable, and it belongs to a different test.

The CSI principle
Only the clean column spends money.
Soot cannot tell you whether it came from the wick, the load or the session. Twelve candles can. One result buys production wicks; the others buy a formula change, a label, or nothing.
"The cheapest wick to buy is the one that turns out to be the cause. The dearest is the one bought for a label problem."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, wax, spray and stickers named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that most soot results do not call for a wick purchase, that the 500 g oil is no cheaper per gram than two 100 g bottles, and that a lower load may save you more than a smaller wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The 8 cm jar, 200 g fill, 5-hour and 3.5-hour sessions, 6% arm, rim rating scale, clean/sooty thresholds, 100-candle month and 5% allowance are worked examples or our judgement; soot causes are commonly cited tendencies; melt-pool timing is a rule of thumb; CSI publishes no soot or wick-performance data. Soot is unburnt carbon from a flame getting more fuel than it burns cleanly, or one disturbed by moving air. Common routes are a wick that is too large, a heavy fragrance load for that oil, and long burning sessions, often together. The soot looks the same either way, so test one change at a time.
Can too much fragrance oil cause soot?
It can contribute: heavier, resinous oils at higher loads are commonly linked to more carbon at the wick. Test it with three candles at a lower load inside the oil page's stated range (6% for Woody Oud's "candles (6-10%)") beside a control on the same wick.
Does burning a candle too long cause soot?
Often. Carbon builds on the wick through a long session and the flame can grow. If three candles are clean in shorter sessions but sooty in long ones, print the session length on a care label; a smaller wick is not the fix.
How many test candles do I need to find the cause of soot?
Twelve in the layout here: three controls that reproduce the soot and three for each of the three single changes (smaller wick, lower load, shorter sessions). In the worked example they cost ₹2,044.70 in materials, excluding jars.
How do I clean soot off a candle jar between test burns?
Once the candle is cool, wipe the inside of the rim with a cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol, let it dry fully, then relight. Rate the soot before you wipe, so each session starts from clean glass and is scored on the same scale.
Should I switch to a smaller wick if my candle soots?
Only if the smaller-wick arm alone comes out clean. If shorter sessions or a lower load also clean it up, those are cheaper or more appropriate fixes, and a wick bought for them becomes dead stock.
Soot on the rim
Three arms and a control, then buy only what the clean column names.
C1 20-pack (₹118.00) and C2 10-pack (₹94.40) cover every wick in the test. Pour twelve candles from one session, burn them on the same days, wipe and rate the rim, and let the result decide between a wick, a formula and a label.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on tunnelling, flame, soot and melt-pool decisions (5541–5560) in the series on wick purchase × jar × wax × fragrance. This page owns the three-arm soot attribution order (down-rung, load-down and session-length arms beside a control) with counts and rupees, and which result releases which purchase, so a label or load problem does not trigger a wick purchase.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Woody Oud Fragrance Oil. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the wick-purchase advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Renam Dhoundiyal, Payal Patel, Subhankar Roy, Thenirvaofficial, Jaya Sawlani. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; at 6% = 12 g + 188 g). The 8 cm inside diameter, 200 g fill, session lengths, rim rating scale, clean/sooty thresholds, 100-candle month and 5% allowance are labelled worked examples and judgement. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Woody Oud candles 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Soot causes are commonly cited tendencies; melt-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) is a rule of thumb. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
