CSI Wick Buying · Mushrooming
A mushroom after every burn usually means too much fuel at the flame. Test one size down first: it is the cheapest test and the cheapest wick. Change construction only when the size ladder has run out.
₹5.90
Eco C1 per candle, the cheapest tabbed wick and the first test · wooden from ₹41.30 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My wick grows a large mushroom after every burn. Smaller size or a different construction? Smaller size first. It is the cheapest test (an Eco C1 20-pack, ₹118.00), the cheapest wick in production (₹5.90 against C2's ₹9.44) and the most common fix for a wick carrying more flame than the jar and oil need. Try a different construction only if the smaller wick fails.

What does each CSI construction cost per candle? Eco C1 ₹5.90, Eco C2 ₹9.44, Cotton Braided ₹12.00, the Braided Wick Roll ₹7.07 per tabbed wick (100 tabs per roll), Performance Wooden Wicks ₹59.00 in tens, ₹47.20 in fifties and ₹41.30 in hundreds. Flat per wick for the Eco and Cotton Braided packs.

When is a construction change worth testing? When C1 leaves a ring of unmelted wax at burn 3 while C2 mushrooms: the right flame sits between two CSI sizes, and a different construction is the only way to look between them. Then the roll (₹706.82) before wooden wicks (₹590.00 for 10).

Is the wooden wick the clean option? Its page claims wooden wicks "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks"; that is a claim to test. At 4.4 times a C2 per candle even at the 100-pack price, and with no width options, it is the last step, not the first.
The short answer
Step 0 (free): confirm the mushroom on a trimmed wick, in still air, in normal sessions. A mushroom only after very long burns is a session problem.
Step 1: 3 candles on Eco C1 beside 3 on C2 (C1 20-pack ₹118.00). Passes the full life clean? Stop: C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle.
Step 2, only if C1 tunnels or still mushrooms: 3 candles on the Braided Wick Roll cut to length (₹706.82, ₹7.07 per tabbed wick).
Step 3, last: 3 candles on Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10; one width only).
Mushrooming every burn: what each construction costs, and the order to test them Worked example: your 7 cm (inside) jar, 150 g Cinnamon Vanilla at 8% in CSI 468, mushrooming on Eco C2. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Per-candle wick cost is price ÷ wicks; the roll is limited by its 100 tabs. Wick cost per production candle (axis 0 to 60 rupees) Eco C1 (down-rung) ₹5.90 Braided Wick Roll, cut + tab ₹7.07 Eco C2 (today) ₹9.44 Cotton Braided ₹12.00 Wooden, 100-pack ₹41.30 Wooden, 50-pack ₹47.20 Wooden, 10-pack ₹59.00 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 Cost to find out, cumulative (axis 0 to 2,500 rupees): stop at the first step that passes 0 500 1,000 1,500 2,000 2,500 nothing to buy Step 0 trim + session ₹118.00 ₹901.40 Step 1 C1 vs C2 ₹824.82 ₹1,350.30 Step 2 braided roll ₹1,414.82 ₹1,954.99 Step 3 wooden cash spent on new wicks (oil, wax and C2 from your stock) materials consumed by the test candles, excl. jars Per-candle figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Worked example, not CSI mushroom or burn data.
Top: the wick's cost in every production candle, by construction, to one scale. The two cheapest options are the down-rung (C1) and the braided roll; wooden wicks cost several times more per candle in any pack. Bottom: what it costs to find out, in the order we suggest. Step 1 is cheap in cash and in candles; each later step adds a whole new purchase and three more candles. Stop at the first step that passes the full life.
Straight answer
My wick develops a large mushroom after every burn. Should I test a smaller size or a different wick construction?
Test the smaller size first, in the same construction, because it is the cheapest question to ask and the cheapest answer to live with. A mushroom that returns after every trimmed burn is commonly linked to a wick drawing more fuel than its flame burns cleanly, often with a heavy or vanillin-rich oil; one rung down tests that directly. In the worked example (Cinnamon Vanilla at 8% in CSI 468, mushrooming on Eco C2 in your 7 cm jar), that is three candles on Eco C1 beside three C2 controls: a ₹118.00 wick pack and ₹901.40 of materials. If C1 passes the full life clean, stop; it also saves ₹3.54 a candle. Only if C1 tunnels (or mushrooms just as badly) is a different construction worth testing, because then the right flame sits between two CSI sizes. Go to the Braided Wick Roll cut to length next (₹7.07 per tabbed wick in production) and to Performance Wooden Wicks last (₹59.00 a candle in tens, ₹41.30 in hundreds, one width only). No CSI page states a construction spec for any of these, so each is a test, not a known step. Per candle, the order of tests is also the order of cost.
One line: a smaller wick is the cheapest test and the cheapest wick; change construction only when size has run out.
Step 1 is one pack: Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026). The three C2 controls, the oil and the wax come from your stock. The roll and the wooden wicks wait until step 1 has failed.
Eco C1 20 — ₹118.00

Every CSI construction, priced per candle

Every construction CSI lists, priced the same way: rupees of wick in one production candle.

Per candle is the number that matters once a wick is approved, because it repeats in every candle you pour. For the tabbed Eco wicks and Cotton Braided it is the same at every pack size; for wooden wicks it falls with the pack; for cut-to-length braid it depends on the length you cut and on whether you have tabs.

Wick cost per candle by construction · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Price ÷ wicks · cut-to-length at a labelled 10 cm per wick · all figures declared
Construction How sold Per candle Tabbed? Sizes at CSI
Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 20 to 1,000 (10-pack out of stock) ₹5.90, every pack Yes The smallest sized, tabbed wick CSI lists
Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) 10 to 1,000 ₹9.44, every pack Yes The next sized, tabbed rung; nothing between C1 and C2
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made 10 to 1,000 ₹12.00, every pack Yes Page: "for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"
Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs 61 m roll + 100 tabs, ₹706.82 ₹7.07 per tabbed wick (tabs cap it at 100) With the 100 supplied tabs Unsized; cut to length
Eco Braided Wicks 5 m ₹472.00 · 10 m ₹826.00 ₹9.44 (5 m) · ₹8.26 (10 m) at 10 cm No tabs stated Unsized; page: "for large diameter container jars"
Eco Candle Wicks Loose 5 m ₹413.00 · 10 m ₹708.00 ₹8.26 (5 m) · ₹7.08 (10 m) at 10 cm Untabbed Page: "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters"
Performance Wooden Wicks 10 · 50 · 100 ₹59.00 · ₹47.20 · ₹41.30 Yes (tabs included) One listing, no width options

Three things in that table shape the test order. First, the cheapest production wick is also the down-rung: C1 at ₹5.90. Second, the braided roll is cheap per candle (₹7.07) but sold as one ₹706.82 roll, so it is cheap to use and dear to try. Third, the wooden wick costs ₹59.00 a candle in tens and still ₹41.30 in hundreds, 4.4 times a C2; the 50-pack labelled "Save 25%" is really 20% cheaper per wick, and the 100-pack labelled "Save 30%" really is 30%.

The untabbed braids (Eco Braided, Loose) need a tab from somewhere; CSI lists tabs only with the roll, so in practice the roll is the cut-to-length option you can test as a finished, tabbed wick. Longer cuts cost more per wick: Eco Braided 5 m cut at 12 cm gives 41 wicks at ₹11.51 each. Per metre, the 10 m Eco Braided is cheaper than the 5 m (₹82.60 against ₹94.40): unlike the tabbed wicks, the braid does get cheaper in the bigger pack.

Per candle, the wick is still small
In the worked example a candle's oil and wax cost ₹142.56 at production prices (excluding your jar). C2 is 6.2% of oil + wax + wick; a 10-pack wooden wick would be 29.3%. The tabbed cotton options are a rounding error next to the oil; wooden is not.

Why the smaller size comes first

Mushrooming every burn usually says "too much fuel at the flame". The most direct way to give it less is the next size down.

A mushroom is carbon that builds on the wick tip when the flame is fed more than it burns cleanly. When it appears after every burn on a trimmed wick, in still air and normal sessions, the common suspects are a wick that is large for the jar and oil, a heavy or vanillin-rich oil, or both. The page for Cinnamon Vanilla states "Vanillin content 2.5%", which is why it is the worked example. A mushroom that appears only late in the jar, or only after several long burns, is a different pattern; reading it is the late-mushrooming post.

The smaller size tests the first suspect directly and costs least to find out. A construction change tests something vaguer: a different braid, fibre or wood may carry fuel differently, but no CSI page states a construction spec, so you cannot predict whether the new wick is "smaller", "the same" or "bigger" in effect. Running a type swap first would answer a question you cannot frame. How to design a fair type-swap A/B when you do need one is the wrong-wick-type post; this page owns the order and the cost.

Smaller size vs different construction · what each test can tell you
Judgement, labelled · CSI publishes no construction specs or wick-performance data
Test Question it answers Cash to try Per candle if it wins If it fails
Down-rung (C2 → C1) Is there simply too much wick? ₹118.00 ₹5.90, saves ₹3.54 You learn the size floor: C1 is too small
Braided roll, cut Does a different cotton braid burn cleaner at a workable size? ₹706.82 ₹7.07, saves ₹2.37 You own 97 tabbed wicks' worth of roll
Wooden Does a different system avoid carbon build-up here? ₹590.00 ₹59.00 to ₹41.30 Nothing to step to: one width only
Mistake: switching to wooden wicks because "they don't mushroom". Why it fails: the page claim is that wooden wicks "tend to burn more cleanly"; a tendency is not your jar and your oil, and CSI sells one width, so if it runs too hot or goes out there is no next size. You also add ₹49.56 a candle at the 10-pack price, ₹31.86 even in hundreds. Fix: test the down-rung first. If you want wooden wicks for their look, that is a design decision with its own test plan (the wooden-wick hub), not a mushroom fix.

The purchase order of tests

Each step is bought only when the step before it has failed. Most makers stop at step 1.

The worked example: your own jar, 7 cm across the inside (38.48 cm² of pool; CSI's 7 cm listings give outer or unspecified figures, about 6.3 cm inside if read as outer on our wall assumption, 31.17 cm², so yours has about 23% more surface), a 150 g fill at 8% of total weight (12 g of Cinnamon Vanilla + 138 g of CSI 468; 8% of total is 8.70% of wax weight, inside the wax page's "Up to 13%" and the oil page's "Up to 13% load for candles" on either reading). Today's wick is Eco C2 and it mushrooms after every trimmed 3-hour burn.

0
Step 0: confirm the mushroom (nothing to buy)Trim to about 5–6 mm before each light, burn in still air, sessions of about 2.8 to 3 hours (a very rough hour per 2.5 cm of width). If the mushroom only appears after 4–5 hour burns, it is a session-length problem; if it only appears with a fan on, it is airflow. Neither needs a wick.
1
Step 1: down-rung beside controls (₹118.00)Pour six from one pot: three on C1, three on C2 (72 g oil, 828 g wax). CSI 468's page states "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C". Cure identically. Score the mushroom after each burn (the 0–3 scale in the late-mushrooming post works) and check the pool reaches the glass by burn 3.
2
Read step 1C1 clean and reaching the glass: go to Gate 2 (the full life) and stop testing constructions. C1 leaves a ring at burn 3, or mushrooms as badly as C2: the size ladder has run out, go to step 2.
3
Step 2: braided roll cut to length (₹706.82)Cut three wicks at a labelled length (10 cm in the worked example: jar height plus an allowance to trim), crimp into three of the 100 supplied tabs, prime them the way you will in production, and pour three candles (36 g, 414 g). Compare against your step 1 notes.
4
Step 3: wooden, last (₹590.00 for 10)Three candles on Performance Wooden Wicks. Expect to adjust fill and trimming habits; wooden wicks commonly behave differently with pool depth. If it fails, there is no wider or narrower wooden wick at CSI.
5
Gate 2 for whichever step passedAll three candles burn to about 1 cm left with no returning mushroom, no flame near the glass (by eye, never by touch) and no drowning low down. Only then size production.

3 · wooden 3 Wooden Wicks 10-pack ₹1,414.82 ₹604.69 ₹1,954.99

Per candle at production prices: C1 ₹148.46, C2 ₹152.00, roll ₹149.63, Cotton Braided ₹154.56, wooden ₹201.56 in tens or ₹183.86 in hundreds (₹54.66 of oil and ₹87.91 of wax plus the wick), worked examples that exclude your jar, labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Don't buy the roll and the wooden wicks "while you're at it": bought together with the C1 pack they add ₹1,296.82 in cash for tests you will probably never run, because most mushrooming C2 candles are answered at step 1. Argued against our own interest: the first order on this page is ₹118.00. If C1 fails, come back for the next step; if it passes, you are finished and paying less per candle.

When a construction change earns its test

C2 mushrooms, C1 tunnels. That is the one result that justifies looking at a different construction.

If C1 leaves wax on the glass at burn 3 while C2 builds a mushroom every burn, the flame this jar and oil need sits between CSI's two sized, tabbed rungs, and CSI lists nothing between them. There are three honest ways forward, and two of them are not wick purchases.

Between C1 and C2 · three ways forward
Cheapest to try first · judgement, labelled
Route What you buy Why it might work The catch
Change the fuel, keep C2 Oil grams only: a lower load inside the page range A lighter load commonly means less carbon at the flame Throw may fall; a formulation change, tested blind (gourmand behaviour and load-first logic)
Different cotton construction Braided Wick Roll, ₹706.82 An unsized braid cut to length may land between C1 and C2 in effect No stated spec; it may land above C2 or below C1
Different system Performance Wooden Wicks, ₹590.00 The page claims cleaner burning One width; ₹59.00 to ₹41.30 a candle
A finer cotton step Ask us; or another supplier Some ranges have sizes between C1 and C2 CSI lists none; we will say so plainly

If the roll passes, it is also cheaper per candle than C2 (₹2.37 less), with one cost the table hides: you cut, tab and prime every wick yourself, so price your own time before you choose it for production. Priming (waxing the braid before use) is itself a variable; the comparison of raw, hand-primed and ready-made wicks is the pre-waxed wick post. If wooden passes, check the move as a system change, load and pool depth included (the cotton-to-wooden retest post).

Mistake: reading "Cotton Braided" as the different construction to try. Why it fails: its page describes it for "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; in a 7 cm jar it is a step up from C2, the wrong direction for a mushrooming wick. Fix: keep Cotton Braided for wide jars. The cut-to-length roll is the cotton construction to test here.

From the passing step to production

The test decides the construction. The formula decides the order, and the cost per candle decides how much it matters.

Size production from your own volume: wicks to buy = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with a 5% allowance as our worked-example figure. In the worked example, 150 candles a month:

A month of wicks by passing construction · worked example: 150 candles
Wick cost at the per-candle price · packs that cover the need · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · all figures declared
Passing construction Wicks a month Cost a month Against C2 today Packs
Eco C1 157.5 ₹885.00 ₹531.00 less 100 + 50 + 20 = ₹1,003.00
Eco C2 (today, for comparison) 157.5 ₹1,416.00 — —
Braided Wick Roll 157.5 ₹1,413.64 (two rolls) tabs limit each roll to 100 wicks two rolls; 42 tabbed wicks carried over
Cotton Braided (for scale) 157.5 ₹1,800.00 more not a fix here
Wooden, 100-pack 157.5 ₹6,195.00 ₹4,779.00 more two 100-packs

Because C1 and C2 are flat per wick, choose packs that add up to the need; a 1,000-pack is ₹5.90 a wick, the same as the 20-pack. Reorder at daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times or stock depth, so confirm on WhatsApp. If the step 1 result moves this product off C2, the C2 left on your shelf goes to products where C2 is approved, never back into this candle: the wicking-down transition post times the switch against stock and lead time.

Don't buy the wooden 100-pack for the "Save 30%": it is genuinely 30% cheaper per wick than the 10-pack, but ₹4,130.00 of wooden wicks before step 3 has passed the full life is a bet on a wick with no second size. If wooden passes, buy to the formula; if you are only testing, the 10-pack has seven spares.

Five items, in the order the tests need them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance or mushroom data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil counts use 12 g per 150 g candle at 8%.

Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters)
Braided cotton you cut to your own length and fix in the supplied tabs. The page calls it "a long spool of braided cotton wick, ideal for creating custom-sized wicks" and says "You can cut the wick to the desired length for your specific candle container size". It states no braid size or construction, so it is a different wick to test, not a known half-step. Limitation: the 100 tabs, not the 61 m, cap the tabbed yield, and you pay ₹706.82 for the three wicks a test needs, about 33.3 times their per-wick cost. Ask us for any construction detail before you buy.

The page says "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs" and claims "Wooden wicks tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot" and a "Crackling fireplace ambiance": the page's claims, to be tested, not assumed. Limitation: there is no wider or narrower wooden wick at CSI, so if it fails there is nothing to step to. It is the only tabbed wick here that gets cheaper per wick in bigger packs, but the 50-pack's "Save 25%" is really 20%.

The worked example's oil, and a typical mushroom suspect: the page states "Vanillin content 2.5%", and vanillin-rich, sweet oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick. It lists "cinnamon and clove top notes, vanilla bean and sugar middle notes, and cream and butter base" and states "Up to 13% load for candles"; 8% is inside that and inside CSI 468's "Fragrance Load Up to 13%". Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026; per gram it falls from ₹7.08 at 15 g to ₹4.55 at 1 kg. Skip for this problem: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made: a step up in a 7 cm jar. Eco Braided Wicks and Eco Candle Wicks Loose: unsized and sold without tabs, so they add a tab problem to a burn problem; the Loose page describes it for "2 inch diameters". Steel Wick Holders: centring helps any wick, but it is not a mushroom fix.

The CSI principle
Size first, construction second, system last.
The smaller wick is the cheapest test and the cheapest wick. A different construction earns its test only when the size ladder has run out between C1 and C2, and a wooden wick is a system with one width, not a mushroom cure.
"Most mushrooms are answered by a ₹118.00 pack of smaller wicks. The roll and the wooden wicks are for the candles that refuse."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every wick named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to test our cheapest wick first, to skip the roll and the wooden wicks unless it fails, that our tabbed range has nothing between C1 and C2, and that the wooden 50-pack's "Save 25%" is really 20%.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (construction, braid size, priming), we say so.

The 7 cm jar, 150 g fill, 10 cm cut length, 150-candle month, 5% allowance, step order and thresholds are worked examples or our judgement; mushroom causes are commonly cited tendencies; melt-pool timing is a rule of thumb; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle wick mushroom every time I burn it?
Carbon builds on the tip when the flame is fed more than it burns cleanly. When it happens every burn on a trimmed wick in still air, the common causes are a wick that is large for the jar and oil, a heavy or vanillin-rich oil, or both. Test one size down first.
Do wooden wicks mushroom less than cotton wicks?
CSI's wooden-wick page claims they "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot". Treat that as a claim to test in your jar. CSI sells one width, at ₹59.00 a wick in tens and ₹41.30 in hundreds, so it is the last thing to try for mushrooming, not the first.
What is the cheapest candle wick per candle?
Among CSI's tabbed wicks, Eco C1 at ₹5.90 a wick in every in-stock pack. The Braided Wick Roll works out at ₹7.07 per tabbed wick (100 tabs per roll), and the untabbed braids can be cheaper per cut piece but need tabs.
Is a braided wick better than a regular wick for mushrooming?
Not necessarily. A different construction changes how the wick carries fuel, but no CSI page states a construction spec, so you cannot predict the effect. Test it only if a smaller size has already failed, three candles at a labelled cut length.
How many test candles do I need to fix wick mushrooming?
Six for step 1 (three on the smaller wick, three controls on your current wick), poured together. Add three per extra construction only if step 1 fails. In the worked example, step 1 consumes ₹901.40 of materials, excluding jars.
Should I trim a mushroomed wick before relighting?
Yes, to about 5–6 mm; one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn". If the mushroom comes back after every trimmed burn, trimming is treating the symptom, and the wick size is the next question.
Mushrooming every burn
Test one size down first; change construction only when size has run out.
Step 1 is an Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00) and six candles. If C1 passes, it also saves ₹3.54 a candle. If it tunnels, the roll (₹706.82) comes next and wooden wicks (₹590.00 for 10) last.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on tunnelling, flame, soot and melt-pool decisions (5541–5560) in the series on wick purchase × jar × wax × fragrance. This page owns the cost per candle of every CSI wick construction set against the cheaper down-rung test, and the purchase order of tests for a wick that mushrooms after every burn.
