My Wick Mushrooms Only with Dark Gourmand Fragrances — Why Might the Same Wick Behave Normally with Fresh Fragrances?
Share
What do I buy to test the group? Three gourmands in their smallest sensible in-stock sizes: Chocolate Fudge 50 g (₹198.24; its 100 g is out of stock), Coffee Vanilla Tobacco 50 g (₹449.00) and Dark Vanilla as two 15 g bottles (₹260.00), plus one Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00). That is ₹1,025.24 if wax, jars and your house C2 come from stock.
How is the screen laid out? Twelve 150 g candles: each gourmand on your house wick (C2) and one rung down (C1), plus two fresh-oil candles on C1 to ask whether one wick could serve everything.
When does the gourmand group earn its own wick? When at least two of the three mushroom on C2 and run clean on C1, each member then passes a full-life confirm on C1, and your fresh oils fail on C1. If the fresh oils pass on C1 too, don't add a wick: move the whole range to C1 and save ₹3.54 a candle.
Why gourmands and fresh oils load a wick differently
A wick draws molten wax and fragrance up to the flame. When the flame is fed more than it burns cleanly, carbon collects on the tip and grows into a mushroom. Fragrance oils are not all the same fuel. Heavier, sweeter and vanillin-rich materials, the backbone of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, coffee and tobacco accords, are commonly linked to more carbon at the wick and sometimes a smaller, duller flame; lighter citrus, herbal and aquatic oils often burn more easily. These are tendencies reported by candle makers, not CSI measurements: no CSI page publishes wick data for any oil.
| Oil | Notes (page) | Candle load (page) | Vanillin (page) | Role here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chocolate Fudge | cocoa, caramel, chocolate, toasted nuts, vanilla bean, brown sugar | 6-10% for candles | not stated | Gourmand, sweet |
| Coffee Vanilla Tobacco | coffee, cocoa, vanilla cream, tonka, tobacco leaf, amber | 7-9% soy wax | not stated | Gourmand, roasted |
| Dark Vanilla | vanilla, spice, caramel, cream, dark amber, musk | candles (6-10%) | "Vanillin present" | Gourmand, vanilla |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | eucalyptus, spearmint | up to 10% for soy wax | "No vanillin" | Fresh control |
At 8% of total weight every oil here sits inside its own stated range and inside CSI 464's "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" (8% of total is 8.70% of wax weight, inside 10% on either reading). So the test holds the load still and lets the oil and the wick vary. If one particular vanilla is the problem rather than the group, the lever is choosing a different vanilla first: the 6.5 cm vanilla-versus-lavender post owns that comparison by page-stated vanillin. A vanilla whose carbon clears at a lower load may need no new wick at all: the vanilla carbon, load-first post.
The group test purchase
The three are picked to span the group: a sweet dessert gourmand (Chocolate Fudge), a roasted coffee-tobacco gourmand (Coffee Vanilla Tobacco) and a vanilla whose page names vanillin (Dark Vanilla). If all three behave the same way, you have a group; if they split, you have individual oils. The worked example uses CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram): about 7 cm outside and about 6.3 cm inside on our labelled 0.35 cm wall (31.17 cm² of pool), with a 150 g fill at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax) in CSI 464. Your house wick in this jar is Eco C2, where your fresh range already passes the full life.
| Item | Count needed | Smallest in-stock pack | Price | Per unit | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chocolate Fudge | 48 g (4 candles) | 50 g (100 g out of stock) | ₹198.24 | ₹3.96 per g | 2 g |
| Coffee Vanilla Tobacco | 48 g (4 candles) | 50 g (smallest listed) | ₹449.00 | ₹8.98 per g | 2 g |
| Dark Vanilla | 24 g (2 candles) | 2 × 15 g | ₹260.00 | ₹8.67 per g | 6 g |
| Your fresh oil (or Eucalyptus Spearmint) | 24 g (2 candles) | your stock (or 50 g) | nothing new (or ₹212.40) | ₹4.25 per g at 50 g | — |
| Eco C1 | 7 | 20 (10-pack out of stock) | ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 | 13 |
| Eco C2 (house wick) | 5 | your stock | nothing new | ₹9.44 | — |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1,656 g | 2 × 1 kg (or stock) | ₹1,014.80 | ₹0.51 per g | 344 g |
| Clear Glass Jar 150 g | 12 (+ stage 2) | pack of 20 | ₹1,888.00 | ₹94.40 | 8, for the confirm stage |
If wax, jars, your C2 and your fresh oil come from stock, the new cash is the three gourmands and one C1 pack: ₹1,025.24. From nothing, with jars, wax and a fresh oil, it is ₹4,140.44. The twelve candles consume ₹2,992.86 of materials including jars, worked examples that exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Why these sizes. Chocolate Fudge's 100 g is out of stock on 1 October 2026, and its 50 g is already the flat ₹3.96 a gram the 500 g and 1 kg cost, so 50 g is the right buy. Coffee Vanilla Tobacco's smallest listing is 50 g. Dark Vanilla needs only two candles, and two 15 g bottles (₹260.00) cost ₹150.00 less in cash than one 50 g, though the 50 g is cheaper per gram. Each bottle leaves almost nothing over, by design: the screen asks a yes-or-no question, and the oil for the confirm stage is bought only if the answer is yes.
Pouring and reading the screen
| Pattern | Meaning | Next purchase |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 3 gourmands: mushroom on C2, clean on C1 at the glass | A gourmand group exists in this jar | Stage 2 oils for the confirm (below) |
| 1 gourmand only | That oil, not the group | No wick SKU; test that oil's load or choose another (the coffee three-lever post shows the arms) |
| Gourmands mushroom on C2 and on C1 | Not simply wick size | Load step on C2 first; size floor reached at C1 (the mushroom construction post for what lies beyond) |
| Gourmands clean on C1 but leave a ring | Between C1 and C2 for these oils | No CSI size between; load or oil choice, or ask us |
| Fresh control clean and at the glass on C1 | C1 may serve the whole range | Gate 3 (below) before any change |
| No gourmand mushrooms on C2 in the test | Not reproduced: your field reports came from something else | Nothing; check session length and airflow |
When the group earns its own wick SKU
Because CSI's Eco wicks are flat per wick, a second wick SKU does not cost more per candle; it costs attention. Two wick bins, two reorder points, two lines on every batch sheet, and one more way for a vanilla candle to be poured on the wrong wick on a busy day. So the rule is strict, and its last gate often removes the need for a second wick altogether.
| Gate | Pass condition | Purchase to run it | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Screen | At least 2 of 3 gourmands mushroom on C2 and run clean on C1, at the glass by burn 3 | Done: ₹1,025.24 | Fix single oils; no group, no new wick |
| 2 · Confirm | Each member: 3 candles on C1 through the full life to about 1 cm left, no returning mushroom, no drowning low down | Oils for 3 candles each: 50 g Chocolate Fudge ₹198.24, 50 g Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹449.00, 50 g Dark Vanilla ₹410.00 = ₹1,057.24; C1 and jars from the screen packs | That oil stays on C2 (or is reformulated); the rest may still form a group |
| 3 · Fresh on C1 | 3 fresh-oil candles on C1, full life, poured beside the confirm | Your fresh oil; C1 from the same pack | Fresh passes on C1: one wick (C1) for everything. Fresh fails: two SKUs, C2 fresh, C1 gourmands |
Stage 2 pours twelve full-life C1 candles (three for each gourmand and three fresh), using the 13 C1 and eight jars left from the screen plus four of your own jars; it consumes ₹2,958.00 of materials including jars. That is the price of a decision you will live with for every gourmand you pour.
Why gate 3 matters most
If your fresh oil also passes the full life on C1, the cheapest and simplest answer is not a gourmand wick; it is moving the whole range to C1. One wick, one bin, and ₹3.54 saved on every candle, gourmand or fresh. A new oil then joins the range by passing on C1, and the behaviour-group admission test in the behaviour-group standard becomes a one-group test. Only when the fresh candles leave a ring on C1 is the range genuinely split, and only then do two wick SKUs earn their keep. How one extra wick compares with reformulating a single oil's load is costed in the stock-it-or-reformulate post; whether nearby oils can share one approved wick at all is the wick-sharing post.
From the rule to the shelf
Worked example: 200 candles a month in this jar, 80 gourmand and 120 fresh. Wicks to buy = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with a labelled 5% allowance.
| Outcome | Wick SKUs | Wicks a month | Packs | Wick saving a month vs all on C2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates 1–2 pass, fresh fails on C1 | Two: C1 gourmands, C2 fresh | C1 84 · C2 126 | C1: one 100-pack (₹590.00); C2: 100 + 20 (₹1,132.80) | ₹283.20 |
| Gates 1–2 pass, fresh passes on C1 | One: C1 for everything | C1 210 | two 100-packs + one 20-pack (₹1,298.00) | ₹708.00 |
| Gate 1 fails (single oil) | One: C2 | unchanged | unchanged | none; fix the oil instead |
With two SKUs, the second one is small: a week of safety stock for the gourmand C1 is about 20 wicks, ₹118.00. The wick is never the expensive part of a gourmand candle: 12 g of Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at the 1 kg price is ₹103.19, Dark Vanilla ₹91.75 and Chocolate Fudge ₹47.58, against ₹5.90 of wick. Splitting one wick budget across a sales mix in more detail is the two-sizes-by-sales-mix post.

Skip for this test: Coffee Blast and Moca Coffee: most of their sizes are out of stock on 1 October 2026, and the screen needs a coffee gourmand you can reorder in every size. Vanilla Bean: priced the same as Dark Vanilla and a fine substitute for the vanilla seat, but one vanilla is enough in a group screen. Cotton Braided Wicks: a step up, the wrong direction for mushrooming in this jar.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wicks, wax and jars named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to buy 50 g and 15 g bottles rather than 500 g, that a single misbehaving oil does not justify a second wick, and that the best outcome may be one wick for your whole range.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: Chocolate Fudge 100 g and the Eco C1 10-pack are out of stock on that date and are flagged wherever they appear; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (vanillin and cure time for Chocolate Fudge and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco), we say so.
The house wick, 0.35 cm wall, 8% load, screen layout, gate thresholds, 200-candle month, 80/120 mix and 5% allowance are worked examples or our judgement; behaviour by oil type is a commonly cited tendency; CSI publishes no wick-performance data.
