CSI Troubleshooting · Help Me Fix This
A candle that is strong at arm's length is throwing; it is small for the room. Measure the reach, check the pool, and change the wick or the vessel before you change a fragrance that works.
114%
more melt-pool area from a 10 cm jar than a 7 cm jar (worked example) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Do I need a different fragrance oil, wick or wax? Usually a wick or a vessel, rarely the wax, and the oil only on evidence. A candle that smells strong near the jar is throwing. What it lacks is reach: not enough scent released per hour for the size and air movement of the room.

What should I measure first? A reach test, free, in two rooms: score the candle at 1 m, 3 m and the doorway at 30, 60 and 120 minutes, in your problem room and in a small room. Then log the melt pool at hour 4. Those two readings tell you which lever to pull.

What does the fix cost? ₹153.40 if the pool is short. ₹639.20 to test a wider vessel (two Apothecary jars, braided and C2 wicks). ₹909.20 to ₹959.20 with a control oil. Three weeks, six test candles at most (eight with an optional wax pair).

What if my candle is just too small for the room? Then no oil will fix it. A 7 cm jar has about 33 cm² of pool. Design a wider candle for large rooms, or label the small one for bedrooms.
The short answer
The diagnosis: strong at the jar, weak across the room is a reach problem. The four levers are pool area (vessel), pool depth and heat (wick), oil structure, and the room itself.
Change first: the wick if the pool is short of the glass at hour 4. Then the vessel if the room is much bigger than the one where the candle works.
Change the oil: only if a control oil in the same candle reaches clearly further in the same room.
Change the wax: last, and only as a paired test. It usually means re-wicking every SKU.
Pool size against room size Left: two full melt pools drawn to scale. Right: square centimetres of pool per square metre of floor. 6.5 cm 9.5 cm 33.2 cm² 150 g jar, 7 cm outer 70.9 cm² Apothecary, 10 cm outer Pool = inside diameter, assumed 0.5 cm under the outer figure. Measure your own jars. Bedroom 3 m x 3.5 m, 10.5 m² Living room 4 m x 5 m, 20 m² Hall 5 m x 7 m, 35 m² 6.5 cm pool 3.16 cm² per m² 1.66 cm² per m² 0.95 cm² per m² 9.5 cm pool 6.75 cm² per m² 3.54 cm² per m² 2.03 cm² per m² Bold cells: the wide pool in a living room gives about the same ratio as the narrow pool in a bedroom. A planning ratio, not physics: ceiling height, fans, AC and open doors change what a nose notices. Floor areas are examples. Find the ratio at which your candle already works (usually the bedroom) and design the living-room candle to match it.
Two full melt pools to scale, and how much pool surface each gives per square metre of floor in three example rooms. The wide Apothecary pool in a 20 m² living room gives about the same ratio (3.54) as a 7 cm jar's pool in a 10.5 m² bedroom (3.16). Air movement and ceiling height also matter; treat the ratio as a planning tool, not a law.
Straight answer
My candle smells strong near the jar but doesn't fill the room. Do I need a different fragrance oil, wick or wax?
Most often a different wick or a different vessel, in that order; the oil only if a control proves it, and the wax last. Strong scent within a metre proves the candle is releasing fragrance; the question is whether it releases enough, fast enough, for the room. First, run a free reach test: score at 1 m, 3 m and the doorway at 30, 60 and 120 minutes in your problem room and in a small room, fan and AC off. Then log the melt pool at hour 4. If the pool is short of the glass, re-wick (₹153.40 for a C1 and C2 pack). If the pool is full and the candle works in the small room but not the big one, the limit is pool area against room size, and a wider vessel is the fix: a 10 cm Apothecary jar gives roughly 114% more pool than a 7 cm jar. Only if a control oil such as Dark Vanilla Oud or Japanese Cherry Blossom reaches clearly further in the same candle and room should you change the oil. The three-week plan costs from nothing, if the room is the limit, to ₹1,018.20 in new materials.
One line: a candle that is strong at arm's length is not weak; it is small for the room.
Test a wider pool, ₹639.20. Two Apothecary jars (500 gm, ₹212.40 each), a pack of 10 Cotton Braided wicks (₹120.00) and a pack of 10 Eco C2 (₹94.40): enough to pour your oil in a 10 cm jar two ways and see which reaches the doorway. All in stock on 25 September 2026.

Strong at the jar, weak in the room: what it tells you

Your candle has already passed the hardest test: it throws. Now you are asking a 150 g candle to scent a room several times the size it was designed for.

Hot throw comes from fragrance evaporating off the molten pool. Near the jar you are smelling that plume before it has spread; across the room you are smelling it after it has been diluted through the air and carried away by a fan, an AC or an open door. So "strong near the jar, weak across the room" is a different complaint from "weak when lit" (the fix plan for that is My Soy Candle Smells Strong When Cold but I Can Barely Smell It After Lighting — What Should I Change First?), and it has a different fix list. The general choice between wax, wick and oil is costed in Should I Change My Wax, Wick or Fragrance Oil to Improve Hot Throw?; this page goes one level deeper for the reach problem specifically.

The four levers of reach · what each changes and what it costs to test
Ordered from cheapest to change to dearest, for a candle that already throws near the jar
Lever What it changes Tell-tale sign it is the limit Cost to test
Room and air How fast the scent is diluted and removed Fine in a small room with the door shut; weak with the fan on Nothing
Wick Pool width and depth, and how hot the pool runs Pool short of the glass at hour 4, or very shallow ₹153.40 for C1 + C2
Vessel diameter Total pool area, the surface that releases scent Full pool, fine in the bedroom, weak in the living room ₹639.20 for the wide-jar pair
Oil structure Which notes survive the trip across the room A control oil reaches further in the same candle and room ₹270.00 or ₹320.00 for a 50 g control
Wax Ceiling and how the blend releases oil Everything above passes and the gap remains ₹325.00 for a CSI 468 pair, plus re-wicking later

Is it actually the fragrance oil?

For a reach problem, we treat the oil as a suspect only when three things are true: the pool is full and 0.5 to 1 cm deep at hour 4 (commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data), the candle has cured at least a week, and a control oil poured into an identical candle reaches clearly further in the same room on the same evening, judged blind. If the control stops at the same distance, the oil is not your limit, and a new one would stop there too. The general weak-throw order of suspects is in the hub guide; do not repeat it here if you have already done it.

Argued against our own interest: "doesn't fill the room" sounds like a strength problem, and a stronger-sounding oil is an easy sale. But a 7 cm jar's pool is about 33 cm², and no oil changes that number. If your candle is strong at 1 m and fine in the bedroom, the honest fix is a bigger pool or a smaller room, and the cheapest part of that is a ₹120.00 pack of wicks.

Week 1: the reach test and the pool check

Distance, time and room size, written down. It costs nothing and it decides which lever you pull.

Saturday 26 September — the reach test, two rooms

Use a candle at least a week old. Measure both rooms' floor areas first. In the problem room, fan and AC off, door shut, light the candle and leave. Someone else notes the time. At 30, 60 and 120 minutes, walk in and score at three stations: 1 metre from the candle, 3 metres, and the doorway, on a 0 to 3 scale (0 nothing, 1 faint, 2 clear, 3 strong). Step outside for two minutes between stations to rest your nose. Air the room, and repeat the same evening, or the next, in your smallest room. If you normally sell to people with a ceiling fan running, repeat the problem-room test once more with the fan on its lowest setting.

Reach-test score sheet · worked example of a typical pattern
Stations × times, 0 to 3; write room area at the top
Room / time 1 m 3 m Doorway
Bedroom 10.5 m², 30 min 3 2 1
Bedroom 10.5 m², 120 min 3 3 2
Living room 20 m², 30 min 3 1 0
Living room 20 m², 120 min 3 1 1
Living room, fan low, 120 min 2 0 0

The illustrative pattern above, strong at 1 m everywhere, good at the bedroom door by two hours, poor at the living-room door, is the classic reach problem: the candle works, the room is too big for it. Your own sheet may read differently; the table below tells you what each pattern points to.

Sunday 27 September — the pool check, from the same burn

During the problem-room burn, also measure the pool across and its depth with a skewer at hours 1 to 4, and the jar's inside diameter. Worked example: a 5.5 cm pool in a jar 6.5 cm across inside melts 72% of the surface. A very rough guide is about an hour of burning per 2.5 cm of width to reach the glass; a common target depth is roughly 0.5 to 1 cm (rules of thumb; measure yours).

Week 1 decision rules · judgement, applied to your two readings
Reach pattern + pool reading → which lever, and what to order on Sunday
Reach pattern Pool at hour 4 Lever Order on 27 September
Weak even at 1 m after an hour Any Not a reach problem; it is weak hot throw Nothing yet; follow the 14-day plan
Strong at 1 m, slow to build, weak far off Short of the glass Wick C1 + C2 packs, ₹153.40
Good at the bedroom door, weak at the living-room door Full, 0.5 to 1 cm deep Vessel (pool area vs room area) The reach set, ₹639.20
Weak far off in both rooms Full Oil structure or wax Reach set plus a control oil, ₹909.20 to ₹959.20
Good with fan off, gone with fan on Full Room and air Nothing; set customer expectations
Indian rooms, honestly
Ceiling fans, ACs and cross-ventilated rooms are common, and all of them carry scent away. That is not a candle fault. Many makers print a room-size suggestion on the label (for example "for bedrooms and small living rooms") rather than promise a hall-filling candle from a small jar. That is judgement, and it is often better business than a louder oil.

If the pool was short. Pour two 150 g candles at 8% on Tuesday 29 September with your oil, one on C1 and one on C2 (if your current wick is one of these, pour the other plus a repeat of your current). Burn both for the pool log on Friday 2 October, their cure day 3, and carry the winner into week 2. Re-wicking after an oil or jar change is covered in How to Choose a Wick After Changing Fragrance Oil.

The vessel: pool area, room area and the ratio that matters

Pool area goes with the square of the diameter. Three centimetres of jar is roughly double the scenting surface.

A full melt pool is a disc, and the area of a disc grows with the square of its width. Taking the pool as roughly the jar's inside diameter, a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), whose page gives an outer diameter of 7 cm, has a pool of about 6.5 cm and 33.2 cm². The Apothecary Glass Candle Jar, whose page gives 10 cm at the rim and base, has a pool of about 9.5 cm and 70.9 cm². That is roughly 114% more surface releasing scent at the same load. (Both inside diameters are assumptions, 0.5 cm under the page's outer figure; measure yours.)

Now divide pool area by the floor area of the room. We call the result the reach ratio. It is a planning tool, not physics: it ignores ceiling height and air movement, and nobody publishes a threshold. What it does well is compare your rooms with each other.

Reach ratio · square centimetres of full pool per square metre of floor
Find the cell where your candle already works; design for that number in the bigger room
Pool Bedroom 10.5 m² Living room 20 m² Hall 35 m²
6.5 cm (33.2 cm², 150 g jar) 3.16 1.66 0.95
9.5 cm (70.9 cm², Apothecary) 6.75 3.54 2.03

Read it with your reach sheet. If your 150 g candle reaches the bedroom door (ratio 3.16) and not the living-room door (1.66), the Apothecary pool in the living room brings you back to 3.54, close to the bedroom figure. For a 35 m² hall, even the wide pool only reaches 2.03; there, two candles, or a still wider vessel such as the Premium Glass Clip Top Airtight container (page: "Dimension- 11cm * 11cm * 10cm", "Wax Fill - 550g"), are the honest options, each with its own wick test. Height does not add pool: a tall narrow jar burns longer, not wider.

Mistake: pushing load to the wax ceiling to make a 7 cm jar fill a 20 m² room. Fix: more oil in the same pool area rarely reaches much further, and past what the wax holds it tends to sweat (see sweating with weak hot throw). Keep the load inside the lower of the wax and oil page ceilings and change the pool area instead.

Weeks 2 and 3: the reach set, dated and costed

Four candles, one melt, one day. Two answer "does a wider pool reach the doorway?", two answer "is my oil the limit?".

You cannot change a jar's diameter without changing its wick, so the wide-jar candles change the format as a package: vessel plus a wick built for it. That is still one decision variable (the format) against your current candle, and the two wide candles differ from each other by wick only. The oil question runs in parallel in 150 g jars, where it is cheapest.

Materials: 1,196 g of wax, two 150 g jars and two Apothecary jars, one braided and up to four C2 wicks, 92 g of your oil and 12 g of the control (38 g left in its 50 g bottle). Valued at CSI prices, the set consumes ₹1,347.01 excluding your oil (wax ₹606.85 as CSI 464 at the 10 kg price), and your 92 g, valued at the Japanese Cherry Blossom 1 kg price as a worked example, is ₹445.46. Skip the control and N2 if week 1 did not point to the oil.

1
Saturday 3 October — pour the reach setOne melt of 1,196 g, split by weight. Add oil at your wax page's temperature and pour inside both the wax's and the jar's stated limits: with CSI 464 (pour 80°C–90°C) into jars whose pages say "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C", that means 80°C to 85°C. Centre the braided wick in V1; set V2's two C2 wicks at even spacing from each other and the glass.
2
Tuesday 6 October — cure day 3: pool logBurn V1 and V2 for up to 4 hours each and log the pool hourly; a 10 cm jar commonly needs longer than a 7 cm one to reach the glass. Burn N1 and N2 for the pool only. A wide candle that tunnels or smokes here has the wrong wick set; note it.
3
Saturday 10 October — cure day 7: reach test in the problem roomSame stations, same times, same scale, fan and AC off, one candle per session, someone else carrying it in. Score N1, N2, and whichever of V1 and V2 gave the cleaner full pool.
4
Saturday 17 October — cure day 14: confirm and decideRepeat the reach test for the candles that mattered. Only now order production materials, and only the ones the table in the next section names.
5
Optional, from 17 October — the wax pairOnly if N1, N2 and the wide jar all fall short: pour N1 again in CSI 468 beside N1 in your wax (CSI 468 page: pour 58°C–60°C; follow each wax's own figure). A wax switch usually means re-wicking every SKU; this is the last lever, not the first.

Week 1 re-wick alone brought the doorway score to 2 or better The wick A 100 pack of the winning Eco size (₹590.00 C1, ₹944.00 C2)
V1 or V2 reaches the living-room door; N1 does not The format: a wide candle for big rooms, the small one labelled for small rooms Apothecary jars and the winning wick set

N1 and N2 reach the same distance; the wide jar reaches further The format, not the oil No oil
Nothing reaches further, including the wide jar Wax, or the room is beyond one candle The CSI 468 pair (₹325.00), or nothing
When the right purchase is no oil at all: four of the five rows above end without a new fragrance. If your control oil stops at the same distance as yours, both oils are fine and the candle is small for the room. We would rather sell you two jars and a wick pack that solve it than a kilogram of a second oil that stops at the same metre.

The wide candle as a product: cost per candle

If the verdict is "format", you are designing a second, bigger product, and it should be priced as one. Worked example, oil valued at the Japanese Cherry Blossom 1 kg price (₹4.84 per gram), wax at CSI 464's 10 kg price (₹0.51 per gram, ₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g), all at 8%:

Total ₹231.97 ₹651.48 ₹658.36
Full-pool area (approx.) 33.2 cm² 70.9 cm² 70.9 cm²

The wide candle costs about 2.8 times as much in materials for roughly 114% more pool and more than three times the wax. That is not a bad deal, but it is a different product at a different price point, and it deserves its own label: the room it is designed for. The small candle does not become a failure because a bigger one exists; it becomes the bedroom candle.

What to buy, lever by lever

In the order the plan reaches them: wick and vessel for the wide format, two control oils (choose the one in your family), and the wax as the last lever. The Eco C1 and C2 packs for week 1 (₹153.40) are covered in the text above. Oils are chosen on stated basis: a candle load range on the page, a stated base-note structure, price per gram and stock at every size on 25 September 2026. CSI has no measured throw or reach data for any oil. Oil candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If the answer to "doesn't fill the room" is a wider pool, you need a wick built for a wider jar. The page says these are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and gives the wick height as 10.16 cm; the Apothecary jar below is approx. 10.8 cm tall without its lid, so check the wick clears your fill line before you pour. All pack sizes are in stock on 25 September 2026 (500 and 1,000 packs also listed). Limitation: the page publishes no size chart, and one centred wick in a 10 cm jar is one option, not the answer; the reach set pours it against two Eco C2 wicks (₹9.44 each) so the jar tells you which. Ask us on WhatsApp with your jar's inside diameter.

Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid
The most direct way to put more pool surface in front of a room: a wider jar. The page gives "Diameter (outer rim): Approx. 10 cm", "Base diameter: Approx. 10 cm", height approx. 10.8 cm without the lid, a fill capacity of "~500 g - 700 g (2 sizes)", and "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C". That last figure matters: CSI 464's page states a pour temperature of 80°C–90°C, so pour inside both, 80°C to 85°C. Against a 7 cm jar, its pool is roughly 114% larger by area (worked example, 9.5 cm against 6.5 cm inside). Limitation: a wider candle is a dearer product (see the cost table) and needs its own wick test; it is a new SKU, not a fix to the old one. Both sizes in stock on 25 September 2026.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil
A control for floral or fresh ranges, and a candidate if yours loses. The page states "6-13% for candles" and describes "sweet cherry and soft pink petals opening into a rose and jasmine heart, grounded by warm sandalwood and musk": a light opening over a stated woody-musky base, which in our judgement makes a useful contrast to a light, top-led oil in a reach test. The 13% top is the oil page's; your wax decides the real ceiling. In CSI 464 (up to 10%) you stop at 10%; in CSI 468 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (both up to 13%) you may test higher, where 13% of a 150 g candle is 19.5 g, but the maximum is rarely the best load. The page does not state a cure in the text we hold. Limitation: two 500 g packs cost ₹158.00 more than the 1 kg, so if it becomes a production oil, the kilogram is the better buy.

Dark Vanilla Oud
A control for warm ranges, chosen for a base the page spells out: "opening with vanilla and spicy cardamom, deepening into exotic oud and deep amber, and settling into warm musk and woody cedar". The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"; "Strong throw" is its wording, not a CSI measurement. If your oil is light and top-led and this control reaches further in the same candle, oil structure is part of your reach problem. Limitation: it is dearer than card 3 at every size, the page does not state a vanillin figure, and a vanilla opening may tint pale wax over time; test it in the jar you sell in. The 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs. An unverified review on this page says the buyer is "obsessed with the vanilla fragrance".

Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (Flakes Form)
Changing wax is the most expensive change on this page, because every SKU usually needs re-wicking afterwards. It is here because its page states a 13% load ceiling (CSI 464 states 10%), a melting point of 50°C–53°C and a pour temperature of 58°C–60°C, and describes "Excellent hot and cold throw" and "minimal frosting". Those are the page's claims; CSI has not measured throw in your candle. Honest price facts: at 10 kg it costs 25.5% more per gram than CSI 464, and the 10 kg is only 2.0% cheaper per gram than the 500 g. Buy the 500 g for one side-by-side pair, and only if cards 1 to 4 have not closed the gap. For the full wax decision, read whether to change soy wax.

The CSI principle
Size the pool to the room before you blame the bottle.
A candle that is strong at arm's length is already doing its job. Measure the reach, check the pool, and change the vessel or the wick before you change a fragrance that works.
"No oil makes a seven-centimetre pool behave like a ten-centimetre one."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wicks, wax and fragrance oils named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page sends most readers to a wick pack or a wider jar before any fragrance, and says plainly when the candle is simply small for the room.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size in the pick cards is in stock on that date, and any that was not would be flagged in its row. Jar dimensions, wick descriptions, wax figures, loads and notes are quoted from product pages and attributed to them; inside diameters are stated assumptions.

The reach test, the reach ratio, the decision tables and the choice of controls are editorial judgement; the reach-sheet scores are illustrative; CSI has no measured throw or reach data for any oil. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle smell strong up close but not fill the room?
Because it is throwing, but not enough for the room's size and air movement. The usual limits are a melt pool short of the glass, a jar too narrow for the room, a fan or AC carrying scent away, and sometimes an oil whose light top notes do not carry. Run a reach test before changing anything.
Will a bigger jar make my candle scent a bigger room?
Often, because pool area grows with the square of the diameter: a 9.5 cm pool is roughly 114% larger than a 6.5 cm one. It needs its own wick test; CSI's Cotton Braided wick page says they are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm".
Should I use a stronger fragrance oil for a large room?
Only if a control oil, poured into an identical candle, reaches clearly further in the same room. If it stops at the same distance, your oil is not the limit and the pool or the room is. The control test costs ₹270.00 or ₹320.00 for 50 g.
Do ceiling fans affect candle scent throw?
Yes. Moving air dilutes and removes scent faster, so a candle can smell weak with the fan on and fine with it off. Test with fan and AC off first, then once on low, and consider printing a room-size suggestion on your label.
Can I use two wicks in a wide candle jar?
Many makers do in wide vessels, but it is a test, not a rule. Pour one wide candle with a single braided wick and one with two Eco C2 wicks, log the pools, and keep whichever reaches the glass cleanly without soot.
How much does it cost to fix a candle that doesn't fill the room?
Nothing if it is the room, ₹153.40 if it is the wick, ₹639.20 to test a wider Apothecary jar two ways, and up to ₹1,018.20 for the whole three-week plan with a control oil. Figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Test the reach, not the bottle
Two Apothecary jars and two wick options: ₹639.20.
A free reach test this weekend tells you which lever to pull; a four-candle set on 3 October tells you whether a wider pool, a different wick or a different oil fills the room. Verdict on 17 October, in time for Diwali production.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: a deep fix plan for a candle that is strong near the jar but does not fill the room: the four levers of reach, a free two-room reach test, the pool-area-to-room-area ratio, a dated four-candle reach set, decision tables and the cost of a wide-format candle. It goes deeper than the wax-wick-oil decision page and links the hubs rather than repeating them.

Non-price figures: candle maths assume load as a percentage of total weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil; 500 g at 8% = 40 g); candle counts are floor(grams ÷ 12). Jar dimensions and hot-pour limits are the jar pages' wording; inside diameters (6.5 cm and 9.5 cm) are assumptions; pool areas are π × r². The reach ratio, room sizes, reach scores and decision tables are editorial judgement or illustration. Wax ceilings and temperatures are as stated on the wax pages (formulation limits, not regulatory limits). Melt-pool benchmarks are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
