Procurement · 5 kg fragrance decision
A 5 kg fragrance rate is attractive on paper and dangerous in the stock room, because 5 kg of one scent is hundreds of candles of that scent alone. The discount almost always beats the holding cost. The question that decides it is how many months that single scent needs to use 5 kg.
51
200 g candles a month of that one scent to use 5 kg within six months (8% load, 3% loss) · 101 a month for three months · reader's quote ₹5,221.00 vs ₹4,700.00 a kilo
Quick answers — read this first
How many candles a month justify a 5 kg fragrance order? For 200 g candles at 8%, each uses 16.48 g of oil with loss, so 5 kg is 303 candles. To use it within six months you need about 51 candles a month of that one scent; within three months, about 101.

Does the discount pay for holding 5 kg? Usually yes. A 10.0% lower rate saves ₹2,605.00 on 5 kg. At an example 2% a month holding cost, it breaks even at only 351 g of oil a month — about 21 candles. The time limit bites long before the money does.

Does CSI sell 5 kg of a fragrance oil? Not as a listed pack. CSI lists oils up to 1 kg per listing; five 1 kg packs cost exactly five times one. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp, with no published discount.

What if the 5 kg can be mixed across scents? Then work the test on total oil. Five scents selling 180 candles a month together use 2.97 kg of oil, so a pooled 5 kg lasts 1.7 months. See pooled offers.
The short answer
Saving: (₹5,221.00 − ₹4,700.00) × 5 kg = ₹2,605.00 — ₹8.34 per 200 g candle at 8% (reader's hypothetical rate; ₹5,221.00 is CSI's Lavender 1 kg).
Money test: Extra average stock ₹11,750.00 − ₹2,610.50 = ₹9,139.50 × 2% a month (example) × months to use 5 kg. Break-even 351 g of oil a month.
Time test: 5 kg ÷ monthly use ≤ your planning horizon. Six months: 51 candles a month of that scent; four: 76; three: 101.

5 kg ÷ monthly oil use for one scent in 200 g candles at 8%. Darkest bars are used within three months, mid-grey within six, lightest take longer. The money test (discount against holding cost) passes from about 21 candles a month, so it is the time horizon, not the price, that sets the threshold. The three- and six-month horizons are labelled planning examples.
Straight answer
My fragrance supplier offers a better rate at 5 kg — how many monthly candle sales do I need before buying that quantity makes sense?
Enough sales of that one scent to use 5 kg within the time you are willing to hold it. Take a quote of ₹5,221.00 a kilo at 1 kg (CSI's listed Lavender kilo, used as the reference) against a hypothetical ₹4,700.00 a kilo at 5 kg: a 10.0% cut, worth ₹2,605.00 on 5 kg, or ₹8.34 on every 200 g candle at 8%. Holding 5 kg instead of 1 kg adds ₹9,139.50 of average stock; at an example holding cost of 2% a month, the discount still wins down to about 351 g of oil a month — roughly 21 candles. So the money test is rarely the problem. Time is. Each candle uses 16.48 g of oil with a 3% loss allowance, so 5 kg is 303 candles of one scent. To use it within six months you need about 51 candles a month of that scent; within three months, about 101. Smaller candles or lower loads need more. CSI's own listings stop at 1 kg per oil and five kilos cost five times one; above that, quantities are quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount.
One line: 5 kg of one oil is about 300 candles of one scent — make sure that scent sells that many within your horizon before the rate matters.
Benchmark any 5 kg quote against a listed kilo. Lavender 1 kg is ₹5,221.00 (₹5.22 a gram) and sits at the top of CSI's best-selling sort; five kilos from the listing cost ₹26,105.00. If a scent really sells hundreds of candles a month, send us the volume for a quote above the listed kilo.
Buy Lavender

The money test

Fragrance is expensive per gram, so a percentage off is worth a lot per kilo — and that is why the money test is usually the easy one.

Use your supplier's two actual prices. For the worked example, take ₹5,221.00 a kilo at 1 kg — CSI's listed Lavender 1 kg, a real anchor — and ₹4,700.00 a kilo at 5 kg, the reader's hypothetical better rate, 10.0% lower. Buying 5 kg saves ₹521.00 a kilo, ₹2,605.00 in all, over the months it takes to use it.

Against that, holding. Buying a kilo at a time, the bottle averages half full: ₹2,610.50 of stock. Buying 5 kg, the stock averages 2.5 kg: ₹11,750.00. The difference, ₹9,139.50, is held for as long as 5 kg lasts. At an example holding cost of 2% a month — your cost of money plus storage and risk, a figure you should replace — that is ₹182.79 a month.

Reader's hypothetical rate · ₹5,221.00 reference = CSI Lavender 1 kg · safety stock excluded (same both ways)
What the 5 kg rate gains and what it holds
1 kg at a time 5 kg at once Difference
Price per kilo ₹5,221.00 ₹4,700.00 ₹521.00
Cost of 5 kg used ₹26,105.00 ₹23,500.00 ₹2,605.00 saved
Cash out on the day you buy ₹5,221.00 ₹23,500.00 ₹18,279.00 more
Average oil on the shelf 0.5 kg 2.5 kg 2 kg more
Average stock value ₹2,610.50 ₹11,750.00 ₹9,139.50 more
Holding cost a month at 2% (example) ₹52.21 ₹235.00 ₹182.79 more

Set saving equal to holding cost: ₹2,605.00 = ₹182.79 × (5 ÷ monthly kg). The break-even is 351 g of oil a month, about 21 candles of 200 g at 8%. At that rate 5 kg would last 14.3 months. Nobody should hold a single fragrance that long just because the arithmetic says the discount survives it.

The 5 kg rate at different sales of that scent

25 412 g 12.1 months ₹2,218.33 ₹386.67 1 kg at a time
50 824 g 6.1 months ₹1,109.16 ₹1,495.84 1 kg at a time
75 1,236 g 4.0 months ₹739.44 ₹1,865.56 5 kg if your horizon allows 4.0 months
100 1,648 g 3.0 months ₹554.58 ₹2,050.42 5 kg if your horizon allows 3.0 months
150 2,472 g 2.0 months ₹369.72 ₹2,235.28 5 kg
200 3,296 g 1.5 months ₹277.29 ₹2,327.71 5 kg
The mistake: counting the whole range's sales. "We sell 400 candles a month, so 5 kg is barely three weeks" is true for all your oils together, not for one of them. A 5 kg rate is almost always for a single oil. If Lavender is 70 of those 400 candles, Lavender's 5 kg lasts 4.3 months. Run the test on the scent, not the business.

The time test — the one that decides

Five kilos of one oil is roughly three hundred candles that all smell the same. The question is how many months your customers take to buy them.

Fragrance oil is not wax. It is a blend of aroma materials, some of them volatile, and it is commonly described as changing slowly in storage — especially once a container is opened and partly empty, or kept warm. CSI does not publish a shelf life for individual oils in this data. Ask for the oil's MSDS and storage guidance on WhatsApp, keep bottles sealed, cool and dark, and keep a retained sample from each lot so you can compare an old candle with a new one.

Because of that, set a planning horizon — the longest you are willing to hold one scent. We show three and six months as labelled examples. Months to use 5 kg = 5,000 g ÷ (candles a month × 16.48 g). Solve for candles and you have the sales you need:

One scent · 200 g candles at 8% · 16.48 g of oil per candle with 3% loss
Candles a month of one scent needed to use 5 kg
Planning horizon Oil a month Candles a month Candles a week
3 months 1,667 g 101 23
4 months 1,250 g 76 18
6 months 833 g 51 12

That is the answer to the title. For a standard 200 g candle at 8%, a 5 kg rate makes sense once that one scent sells about 51 candles a month if you are comfortable holding six months, or about 101 a month if you want the stock gone in three. Below that, keep buying by the kilo — the discount is real, but you are buying months of one smell.

1
Isolate the scent's own salesTake the last three months of that scent only, in every size it sells in. Convert each size to oil: units × fill × load × (1 + loss).
2
Run the money testSaving = (1 kg rate − 5 kg rate) × 5. Holding = (average stock at 5 kg − at 1 kg) × monthly rate × months to use. It almost always passes; note by how much.
3
Run the time testMonths to use 5 kg against your horizon. Over the horizon: do not buy 5 kg, whatever the price.
4
Check the cash on the day5 kg at the example rate is ₹23,500.00 paid at once, against ₹5,221.00 for a kilo. Make sure that does not starve your wax, jars or other scents.
5
Ask for the rate on split deliveriesThe best version of a 5 kg deal is the 5 kg price delivered a kilo or two at a time. Ask your supplier — including us — before accepting 5 kg on the shelf.
The CSI principle
A bulk fragrance rate is a promise about one scent's future.
The wax you buy in bulk will go into whatever sells. The oil you buy in bulk only goes into one scent. Commit to 5 kg of it only when that scent has earned the promise with its own sales.

Candles needed by size and load

Smaller candles and lower loads use less oil, so they need more units to move 5 kg. The two tables below give monthly candles of a single scent, rounded up, for three candle sizes at 6%, 8% and 10% — each with the 3% loss allowance. Load is a share of the finished candle weight; stay within your wax's stated maximum (13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464).

One scent · 3% loss · candles a month to use 5 kg within SIX months
Six-month horizon

100 g 270 203 162
150 g 180 135 108
200 g 135 102 81

A business selling 100 g candles at 6% needs more than twice as many units of a scent as one selling 200 g candles at 8% to justify the same 5 kg. If your range sells one scent in several sizes, convert each size to grams of oil and add them, rather than reading a single row. I Have 5 Kg of Fragrance Oil — How Many 200 g Finished Candles Can I Produce at 8% Before I Need to Reorder? counts how many candles 5 kg makes in the first place, and My Bestseller Sells 300 Units a Month and Uses 16 g of Fragrance per Candle — How Many Kilograms of Fragrance Should Trigger My Reorder? sets the reorder trigger once you hold it.

Check the load before the rate
Cutting the load from 10% to 8% saves 20% of the oil on every candle — twice the example discount. If your candles perform at 8% in burn tests, that change is worth more than a 5 kg rate, and it needs no stock at all. I'm Making 100 × 200 g Candles at 6% Fragrance — Should I Buy a 1 Kg Fragrance Bottle or Will I Need More? works a load comparison against a 1 kg bottle.

Pooled offers across scents

Some suppliers apply a 5 kg rate to a mixed order — 5 kg in total across several oils. That changes the arithmetic completely, because the time test now uses the whole range's oil. Five scents selling 60, 45, 35, 25, 15 candles a month (180 in all, 200 g at 8%) use 2.97 kg of oil a month together, so a pooled 5 kg lasts 1.7 months — comfortably inside any horizon. Each scent's share is still rounded to its own bottles.

Ask the question plainly when a rate is offered: is it per oil or per order? The answer decides whether you need one scent selling hundreds of candles a month, or simply a busy range. CSI's listed prices are per oil and per size; for a mixed order above the listed packs, ask on WhatsApp — no volume discount figure is published.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. On our listed catalogue there is no 5 kg rate to take. Five 1 kg bottles of Lavender cost ₹26,105.00, exactly five times one. Buying five kilos from our listings only buys stock, not a price. If your scent sells 51+ candles a month, ask us for a quote above 1 kg and run it through the tests on this page. If it does not, keep buying by the kilo — or by the 100 g, which for most of our oils costs the same per gram.

Where CSI's own price breaks are

CSI's listed oils run from 15 g to 1 kg. For most of them, price per gram is flat from 50 g or 100 g upward. But 24 oils show a 1 kg saving of 5% or more over the 100 g, and a few step down at 500 g. For those, some of the benefit a 5 kg rate would give is already on the listing, without holding 5 kg:

A worked case to close. A maker sells 70 Lavender candles a month (200 g, 8%). That uses 1,154 g of oil; 5 kg would last 4.3 months and, on the reader's rate, save ₹1,812.74 net of holding. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A fragrance supplier could simply tell you to buy bigger. This page says that on our own listings five kilos cost five times one, shows the oils where our 500 g or 1 kg already carries a real saving, and gives you the tests to judge any 5 kg offer.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. The ₹5,221.00 reference is CSI's listed Lavender 1 kg. Savings, holding costs, months of cover and sales thresholds are plain arithmetic, shown so you can check them.

The ₹4,700.00 5 kg rate is the reader's hypothetical; the 2% monthly holding rate, the three- and six-month horizons and the 3% loss allowance are labelled examples. CSI publishes no shelf life, throw data or volume discount for individual oils in this data; ask for MSDS and storage guidance, or a quote above 1 kg, on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy fragrance oil in 5 kg?
Only if your supplier prices it lower and you use it fast enough. On CSI's listings, oils stop at 1 kg and five kilos cost five times one. A quoted 5 kg rate pays once that single scent uses 5 kg within your planning horizon.
How many candles does 5 kg of fragrance oil make?
At 16 g per 200 g candle (8%), 312 candles before loss, 303 with a 3% allowance. At 10% (20 g) it is 250 before loss; at 6% (12 g), 416. I Have 5 Kg of Fragrance Oil — How Many 200 g Finished Candles Can I Produce at 8% Before I Need to Reorder? works it in full.
How long does fragrance oil last in storage?
CSI does not publish a shelf life for individual oils in this data. Ask for the MSDS and storage guidance on WhatsApp, store sealed, cool and dark, and keep a retained sample from each lot. This page uses three and six months only as planning horizons.
Should I buy one fragrance in bulk or several?
Bulk-buy only the scents whose own sales use the quantity within your horizon. If a supplier's rate applies to a mixed order, the test uses your whole range's oil, which is far easier to pass.
Which CSI fragrance oils are cheaper per gram at 1 kg?
24 oils show a saving of 5% or more over the 100 g, including Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%), Mango Coconut (20.7%), Verbena (20.0%) and British Rose (10.3%). For most others the per-gram price is flat from 100 g.
What is a good holding cost to use for fragrance stock?
Your own: what the cash would otherwise cost or earn, plus storage and the risk of an oil ageing or a scent dropping out of the range. This page uses 2% a month as an example; fragrance carries more product risk than wax, so err higher, not lower.
