CSI Wick Buying · Early Drowning
A wick that burned perfectly once has shown it can melt your jar. When it drowns on burn 2 or 3, check the candle before you change the wick; buy one rung up only when six free checks come back clear.

Eco C2 10-pack: three test candles + three retained, after the checklist · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My wick drowns on the second or third burn after a perfect first burn. Do I need a bigger wick? Maybe, but not until six free checks are clear: debris in the pool, a trim shorter than about 5 mm, carbon fallen into the wax, a hollow near the wick, a pool driven deep by long sessions, and a load heavier than you planned. Each of those drowns a correctly sized wick.

What do I buy if all six are clear? One rung up, three candles: from Eco C1, the Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40, ₹9.44 a wick). Pour three C2 candles beside three C1 controls from the pack you already have.

Why keep wicks back? Keep three unused C1 from the current pack and three unused C2 from the new one, sealed and labelled. If drowning returns months later, you can burn the old wick beside the new pack's and see whether the wick changed or your candles did.

When do I order production C2? Only when all three C2 candles pass the full life without drowning or overheating. C2 costs ₹9.44 a wick in every pack, so buy what your candles need, nothing more.
The short answer
Check first (free): debris, trim length, fallen carbon, a hollow near the wick, pool depth against session length, the weighed load. A "yes" to any of them is a free fix, not a wick order.
Then buy one rung up: C1 → Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40); C2 → Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00). Three test candles, three controls.
Keep a comparison sample: three unused wicks of each pack, sealed and labelled with the order date. At cost that is ₹17.70 of C1 and ₹28.32 of C2.
Approve on the full life: all three C2 candles burn to about 1 cm without drowning, and without the flame or heat growing in the final third. Then order by the formula.
Drowning on burn 2–3: six free checks before one purchase Run the checks on two of three candles. Any "yes" ends at a free fix. Only six clear answers reach the order. Worked example: Roasted Coffee 8% in your 7.5 cm jar on Eco C1. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. 1 Debris in the pool? match ends, trimmings, dust round the wick yes Lift it out of the cooled wax; relight free fix · no wick purchase no 2 Trimmed shorter than ~5 mm? a stub sits too low in a liquid pool yes Trim to about 5–6 mm, no shorter free fix · no wick purchase no 3 Carbon fallen into the pool? mushroom heads breaking off yes Remove carbon cold, before relighting free fix · no wick purchase no 4 A hollow near the wick? a shrinkage dip that floods on relight yes Top up the dip; second pour next batch free fix · no wick purchase no 5 Pool much deeper than ~1 cm? long sessions deepen the pool yes Shorten the session; re-run free fix · no wick purchase no 6 Load heavier than you planned? scale or calculation error, oil on surface yes Re-pour at the weighed 8% free fix · no wick purchase all six clear on 2 of 3 candles The one purchase: Eco C2 10-pack, ₹94.40 (₹9.44 a wick) 3 C2 test candles beside 3 C1 controls from your current pack · full life before any bigger order Keep back 3 unused C1 from the current pack and 3 unused C2 from the new one: a sealed comparison sample 4 C2 left over. The 20-pack (₹188.80) only if you test two oils or want room for a re-pour. Thresholds (about 5–6 mm trim, about 1 cm pool) are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data.
Six questions stand between a drowned wick on burn 2 and a wick order. Each "yes" ends at a free fix: lift the debris out, trim to about 5–6 mm, remove fallen carbon, top up a hollow, shorten the session, or re-pour at the load you meant. Only six clear answers on two of three candles reach the purchase: the C2 10-pack at ₹94.40, with three unused C1 and three unused C2 kept back as a comparison sample. Worked example for Roasted Coffee at 8% in a 7.5 cm (inside) jar of your own: CSI's 7.5 cm listings state outside or unspecified widths and are out of stock on 1 October 2026.
Straight answer
My wick drowns after the second or third burn even though the first burn looked perfect. What should I examine before sizing up?
Six things, all free, on two of three candles: debris in the pool (match ends, trimmings, dust), a trim shorter than about 5 mm, carbon heads fallen into the wax, a hollow near the wick that floods when you relight, a pool driven well past about 1 cm deep by long sessions, and an actual load heavier than you planned. Each of those can drown a wick that is the right size, and a good first burn is evidence that the size may be right. If all six are clear and the flame still drowns, buy one rung up for three test candles: from C1, the Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). Pour them beside three C1 controls, and keep three unused wicks of each pack sealed as a comparison sample. Approve C2 only when all three pass the full life, then order production by the formula. What not to do: buy a 100-pack of C2 on burn-2 evidence, or skip to Cotton Braided.
One line: six free checks, then ₹94.40 of C2 for three candles, with six unused wicks kept as evidence for later.
If the checklist is clear: the Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40, ₹9.44 a wick) covers three test candles and three retained, with 4 spare. In stock on 1 October 2026, like every C2 pack. Already on C2? The Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) is your up-rung.
Eco C2 10 — ₹94.40

Why a good first burn can drown later

Burn 1 is a candle with a flat top and a clean wick. Burn 2 is not.

On the first burn everything is in the wick's favour: a level surface, no debris, a fresh untouched wick and no carbon. By the second light the candle has changed. Wax has shrunk as it cooled, sometimes leaving a dip or hollow near the wick. The wick carries carbon from the first burn, and if it mushroomed, a head may have broken off into the pool. Someone trimmed it, perhaps too short. Dust or a match end may have landed in the jar. And if burn 1 ran long, the pool went deep and the wax level dropped further than you think.

A wick that is too small for the jar and oil usually shows it differently: a flame that shrinks session after session, a pool that never quite reaches the glass, and a wick that gets steadily harder to keep alight. Reading that shrink as a curve, burn by burn, is the shrinking-flame post, and drowning that starts only in the bottom third, near the tab, is the bottom-third drowning post. This page sits before both: burn 1 was fine, the trouble is early, and the purchase question is whether anything should be bought at all.

Burn 1 vs burn 2–3 · what changes in the jar
Tendencies, not certainties · each one can drown a correctly sized wick
Condition Burn 1 Burn 2–3 Wick fault?
Surface Flat, poured level May dip near the wick as soy shrinks on cooling No
Wick Clean, factory-primed Carbon from burn 1; may be trimmed too short Not by itself
Pool Builds from solid wax Liquid sooner, deeper if sessions run long Sometimes
Contaminants None Match ends, trimmings, fallen carbon, dust No
Oil Mixed in, as weighed Any excess may show as oil on the surface No; a formula fault

The geometry matters too. Your jar is 7.5 cm measured inside. That is your own jar: CSI's three listings that state 7.5 cm (a ceramic container and two bamboo-lid glass jars) give it as a width or an unspecified diameter, not an inside figure, and all three are out of stock on 1 October 2026. It gives 44.18 cm² of pool, and a very rough rule of thumb of about 3.0 hours to a full first pool. A first burn that reached the edge in roughly that time, with a calm flame, is evidence the wick can melt this surface. That is exactly why early drowning deserves a check before a size change.

The six free checks, and what each one rules out

Every check you clear makes the wick order more likely to be the right one.

Run them on the cooled candle before burn 3, and on two of three candles, because one candle can carry one stray match end. None of them costs anything except a few minutes and a wick cutter or a pair of scissors you may already own.

1
DebrisLook at the cooled surface around the wick: match ends, trimmings dropped into the jar, dust, a fleck of label. Debris near the wick can swamp a small flame or draw it off centre. Lift it out of the solid wax and relight; if the next session is clean, there was nothing wrong with the wick.
2
Trim lengthMeasure the exposed wick before lighting. A stub of 2–3 mm sits low in a liquid pool and can drown however good the wick is. Trim to about 5–6 mm and no shorter (one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn"). If you or a tester has been trimming "neatly short", this is your likeliest cause.
3
Fallen carbonA mushroom head that breaks off lands in the pool next to the wick. Remove carbon with the candle out and cooled, before relighting, and pick out any pieces already in the wax. If heads form after every session, that is a separate signal (the mushrooming post).
4
A hollow near the wickSoy commonly shrinks as it cools. Press gently around the wick on a cooled candle, or look for a dip: a hidden hollow can fill with melted wax early in the next burn and flood a small flame. If you find one, top it up with a little reserved wax and add a second pour to the next batch; no wick purchase.
5
Pool depth against session lengthDip a marked skewer at the end of each session. A pool well past about 1 cm after a long session means the session, not necessarily the wick, made it deep. Re-run with sessions of about 3–4 hours (judgement for this width) before you decide. How to read depth against heat is the 1 cm deep pool post.
6
The load you actually pouredRe-check the batch sheet and the scale. At 150 g, 8% is 12 g of oil; weigh in error to 9.5% and it is 2 g more. Look for oil beading on the surface or at the glass. Excess oil is a formula fault: re-pour at the weighed load, inside the page's "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464's 10%.

Notice what is not on the list: a new wick type, a bigger wick "just to see", or a change of oil. Each of those changes more than one thing at once. And notice the session-length check works in both directions: if you have been running long burns, shorter sessions may cure the drowning; if you have been running short ones, the pool may never have reached the glass on burn 2, leaving a tunnel wall that later slumps into the pool. Both are about how the candle was burned, not what it was wicked with.

A one-line log makes the checks count
For each candle and session write: exposed wick before lighting (mm), anything removed from the pool, carbon yes/no, a dip near the wick yes/no, session length, pool depth at the end (skewer, cm), flame held or drowned. Six columns, one row a session. Two of three candles with the same row pattern is the evidence; a memory of "it kept going out" is not.
Don't buy yet: not the C2, not Cotton Braided, not a trimmer, until all six are checked. Argued against our own interest: a clean pair of scissors does checks 2 and 3, a skewer does check 5, your scale does check 6. If any check finds the cause, the honest purchase from CSI is nothing.

The release rule: when the checks earn a purchase

One drowned candle is an event. Two clean-checked drownings out of three is evidence.

After the checks, relight and run one more session in still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm. The thresholds below are our judgement, written so they can be read off a candle, not a feeling.

Release rule · drowning after a good first burn (our judgement, labelled)
Three candles · all six checks run · still air · trimmed to about 5–6 mm
What the candles show after the checks Reading Purchase
A check found a cause; after fixing it, the flame holds on 2 of 3 The wick was never the problem Nothing
Clean checks, flame holds on burn 3 but shrinks again on burn 4 A slow shrink, commonly clogging Read the shrink curve first (4223)
Clean checks, flame drowns again on 2 of 3, pool shallow, no debris The wick cannot keep up with this pool and oil One rung up × 3
Clean checks, drowns only with this oil, fine with a lighter one in the same jar An oil-specific behaviour One rung up for this oil only; see 5550
Only 1 of 3 drowns after clean checks Not decided Nothing; re-pour three if needed

The release threshold is deliberately the same shape as the cluster's other size-up rules: three candles, clean conditions, the same failure on at least two. Where the failure is the opposite one, a pool that never reaches the glass even though the flame survives, the evidence for sizing up and the count to buy are in the never-reaches-the-edge post. Which symptoms justify any wick purchase at all is summarised in the cluster hub.

The up-rung order and the comparison sample

Buy the next rung for three candles. Keep three of the old rung you will never burn.

In CSI terms "one rung up" is short and specific: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, then pairs for wide jars. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, so if C1 drowns and C2 runs hot, the answer lies between two CSI rungs and the honest step is a WhatsApp question, not a guess.

Cash for the test is ₹991.80 (the C2 pack, a 100 g Roasted Coffee and a 1 kg bag of CSI 464), or ₹1,286.80 with the cutter. The six candles consume ₹746.95 of materials before your jars: ₹126.26 for each C2 candle and ₹122.72 for each C1 control, of which the wick is the smallest part. Every candle excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Why the 10-pack, not the 20

For one oil, six C2 are needed and the 10-pack leaves 4. The C2 20-pack (₹188.80, the same ₹9.44 a wick) earns its place in two cases only: you are testing the up-rung in two oils at once (two × three candles plus three retained, leaving 11), or you want room for a three-candle re-pour if one candle is spoiled (11 left). Otherwise it is the same per-wick price for more wicks you have not approved.

The comparison sample: six wicks you never burn

Put three unused C1 from the pack that drowned and, when it arrives, three unused C2 from the new pack into small sealed bags, labelled with the product, the order date and the candles they went into. At cost that is ₹17.70 and ₹28.32. They earn their keep later: if drowning reappears after a reorder, burn a retained wick beside a new one in twin candles and you learn whether the wick changed or your candles did. CSI publishes no wick lot data, so your own retained sample is the reference you will have. How many to keep per lot in a larger operation is the retained-wicks post; what to measure when a new shipment looks different is the incoming-QC post; and the single measurement that exposes a changed wick, grams burned per hour, is the same-size-different-burn post.

Don't buy the big pack: a C2 100-pack (₹944.00) bought on burn-2 evidence leaves 97 unapproved C2 (₹915.68 at cost) if the checklist later shows a short trim was the cause. C2 costs ₹9.44 a wick in the 10 and in the 1,000. Argued against our own interest: the 10-pack is the whole wick order on this page.

After full life: the production order

C2 is approved when three candles reach the bottom without drowning or running hot. Not before.

Burn the three C2 candles to about 1 cm left. Moving up a rung fixes early drowning by adding heat, and heat commonly builds as a candle burns down, so the up-rung must also pass the final third: flame steady, nothing touching the glass, no growing pool. When to place each order against that calendar is the final-third order-timeline post. Once all three pass, size the order: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance.

Production order · worked example: 160 coffee candles a month on C2
160 × 1 × 1.05 = 168 wicks · flat ₹9.44 per wick · reorder point with your own lead time
Line Figure How
C2 needed a month 168 160 × 1 × 1.05
Wick cost a month ₹1,585.92 168 × ₹9.44
Packs that cover it 100 + 50 + 20 = 170 wicks ₹1,604.80; the same per wick as any other mix of packs
Extra over C1, for scale ₹566.40 a month ₹3.54 a candle × 160
Roasted Coffee, for scale 1,920 g, ₹7,176.96 at the 1 kg per-gram price
Daily use 5.6 168 ÷ 30
Reorder point 67 wicks 5.6 a day × (7-day lead time + 5 days' safety stock), your figures

The 7-day lead time is a worked example: CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times or stock depth, so confirm on WhatsApp before a big run. The C1 you still hold is not dead stock if C1 is approved in a lighter oil or a smaller jar; use it there. Keep the retained bags with the batch records, and keep them until the candles they represent are long sold.

Don't stock the 1,000-pack because C2 "fixed it": at 168 a month the C2 1,000-pack (₹9,440.00) is about six months of stock at the same ₹9.44 a wick, and it is exposed to change: a new jar batch, a lighter oil that runs hot on C2, or a move from 8% to 10%. Buy a month plus safety stock and reorder on the formula (the pilot's production formula).

Before sizing up: what to buy and what to skip

Five items, in the order this decision needs them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use 12 g per 150 g candle at 8%.

wick · the up-rung, only after the checklist
Eco Candle Wicks — Thick (C2)
The next rung above C1 in CSI's short tabbed range (C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided). The page describes wicks of "natural fibers like cotton and paper" and, in the text we captured, states no length, width or jar range, so C2 is a rung to test in your jar, not a size anyone can promise. Every C2 pack is in stock on 1 October 2026 and the price is flat at ₹9.44 a wick from 10 to 1,000. Argued against our own interest: the 10-pack covers one oil's test and a retained sample; buy the 20 only for a second oil or re-pour room.

Candle Wick Cutter (5.5 cm blade)
Trim length and fallen carbon are two of the six checks, and both need a clean cut inside the jar. This cutter's page lists "Total Size: 11 cm Blade Size: 5.5 cm Width: 2 cm" and promises "Clean cuts" with a stainless blade (page wording). In a 7.5 cm jar a longer blade reaches the wick without tilting the jar. Argued against our own interest: the ₹177.00 cutter (3 cm blade) makes the same cut for ₹118.00 less, and the ₹588.82 trimmer's "built-in debris catcher" is a convenience, not a requirement. Never trim to a stub: about 5–6 mm is the commonly used length.

Roasted Coffee Fragrance
The oil this page is costed on, and a fair suspect for burn-2 trouble: the page describes "fresh coffee bean top notes, dark chocolate and espresso heart, and a warm vanilla and caramel base", and dense gourmands are commonly linked to carbon on the wick, which is check 3. The page states "candles (6-10%)" and its FAQ says "Always cure soy wax candles for at least 48-72 hours before burn testing for best scent throw". 8% is inside both stated ceilings (8.70% of wax weight, inside CSI 464's 10% on either basis). Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026. If drowning appears only with dark gourmands, read the dark-gourmand mushrooming post before sizing up.

The worked example's wax. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" and calls it "single-pour". wick · the rung after C2, not before it
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
Listed here so you know where the ladder goes if C2 also drowns, not as part of this order. The page describes it as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" with "preventing tunneling" as its own claim, and gives "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm". A 7.5 cm jar sits below that wording, so treat it as a rung to test, not a cure. Don't buy it with the C2: skipping a rung tells you nothing about the one in between.

Skip for this decision: Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10), a different construction with its own drowning behaviour (wooden wicks are commonly sensitive to pool depth and trim height); the Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82), a type change, not a size step; and any second oil "to compare" unless the release rule pointed at the oil.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 38 days from 1 October 2026. Run the six checks this week. If they are clear, pour the C2 test at once: cured and burned through the full life, it can be decided in time for a late-October production run. Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, cutters, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to buy nothing until six free checks are done, that scissors do two of them, that the ₹177.00 cutter does what the ₹295.00 one does, and that bigger wick packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The checklist order, the two-of-three rule, the release table, the retained-sample count, session lengths, the 5% allowance, the 160-candle month and the 7-day lead time are our judgement or worked examples. Trim length (about 5–6 mm), pool depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and about an hour per 2.5 cm of width are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance or lot data. Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle wick drown after the first burn?
Commonly because something changed in the candle, not the wick: debris or fallen carbon in the pool, a trim shorter than about 5 mm, a hollow near the wick left by shrinkage, a pool made deep by a long session, or more oil than planned. Check all of those before sizing up.
How short should I trim a candle wick?
About 5–6 mm is the commonly used length; one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn". Shorter than that and the wick can sit too low in the melted wax and drown, however well sized it is.
Should I use a bigger wick if my candle keeps going out?
Only after the free checks are clear on two of three candles. Then test one size up on three candles: from Eco C1, the C2 10-pack (₹94.40). Keep three of your current wicks as controls, and approve the bigger wick only after a full-life burn.
Can too much fragrance oil drown a wick?
It can contribute: heavier loads are commonly linked to smaller, sootier flames and to oil on the surface. Check your batch sheet and scale before buying wicks. Roasted Coffee's page states "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464's page "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"; stay inside both.
Why should I keep unused wicks from each pack?
So you have a reference if a problem returns. Three sealed, labelled wicks per pack let you burn the old wick beside a new pack's in twin candles and see whether the wick changed or your candles did. CSI publishes no wick lot data, so your own sample is the comparison.
Do candle wicks get cheaper in bigger packs?
Not CSI's Eco C1, Eco C2 or Cotton Braided: each costs the same per wick in every pack (₹5.90, ₹9.44, ₹12.00). A bigger pack only raises the cash you spend before the wick is approved.
Drowning on burn 2–3 · before you size up
Six free checks, then, only if all clear, C2 for three candles at ₹94.40.
Lift out debris, trim to 5–6 mm, remove carbon, top up any hollow, shorten long sessions and verify the load. If two of three candles still drown, test one rung up beside controls, keep a retained sample, and approve only on the full life. Send us your checklist answers on WhatsApp first.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on tunnelling, flame, soot and melt-pool decisions (5541–5560) in the series on wick purchase × jar × wax × fragrance. It covers the purchase side of a wick that drowns on the second or third burn after a good first one: why early drowning is often not a size fault, a six-point pre-purchase checklist, the release rule that earns a purchase, the up-rung order with a retained comparison sample, and the step to production quantity and reorder point.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 7.5 cm inside diameter is the reader's own jar (CSI's three 7.5 cm listings give a width or unspecified diameter and are out of stock on 1 October 2026); pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Roasted Coffee 6–10% for candles): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Trim length, pool depth and pool-time figures are commonly cited rules of thumb; the shrinkage, carbon and load effects are tendencies. The checklist, release rule, retained sample, 160-candle month, 5% allowance and 7-day lead time are editorial judgement or worked examples. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
