What Is the Best Fragrance Load for Candles?

Which ceiling applies — the wax or the fragrance oil? The lower one. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13%, but Fresh Strawberries states 6–9% for candles, so 9% governs that pair. Of CSI’s 92 oil pages, 66 cap candles at 10% and only 3 state anything above it.
Does a higher load always mean a stronger candle? No. Above the load a wax can hold, extra oil pools, beads on the surface and drowns the wick instead of evaporating. It also costs: one percentage point on a 200 g candle is ₹5.66 with Citrus Lemon and ₹17.92 with Gilli Mitti Patchouli.
How do I know my load is right? Judge at day 14, not day 2. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks; 14–21 days is standard practice for soy. A right load gives a full pool, a dry top and no oily beads.
What “best” means once you are paying for the oil
Ask ten makers for the best fragrance load and you will get ten numbers, because they are answering ten different questions. A hobbyist pouring for her own flat is optimising for scent at any cost. A Shopify brand shipping 400 Diwali jars is optimising for a scent that survives a courier van, a week on a shelf and a customer who lights it once. A contract maker filling a corporate gifting order is optimising for a cost sheet that has already been signed.
All three are bounded by the same four things, and they apply in a fixed order. Two of them are published and are not negotiable: the fragrance oil page’s stated candle range, and the wax page’s stated maximum. Two of them are yours: the melt pool your wick and jar actually open, and the price your candle can carry. Get the first two right and you cannot ruin a batch. Get the second two right and you stop paying for oil that never reaches anybody’s nose.
That is the whole method. What follows is the arithmetic behind it, using live CSI stock as at September 2026 and a consistent unit throughout: 200 g of wax, the oil priced at 1 kg, and one Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90. One percentage point of load on that unit is exactly 2 g of oil, which makes the cost of moving a load trivially easy to work out.

Two ceilings, and the one that governs
The wax side is short and easy to memorise. Four CSI soy and soy-blend grades are sold specifically for container candles, and two of them publish a maximum load.

The oil side is longer, because every oil is its own page. Across the 92 live fragrance oil pages, 72 publish a candle usage range and 20 do not. Where a page publishes nothing, that is not a hidden permission to guess — it is a question for WhatsApp before you scale the batch.

Put the two sides together and the rule is one line long: the lower figure governs, every time. It is worth working through, because the result is often not the number on the wax bag.

Notice what the third row does to a familiar assumption. Buying the 13% wax does not give you a 13% candle unless the oil page agrees. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with British Rose you are capped at 10% by the oil, and you have paid ₹18.32 more per 200 g candle for wax headroom you cannot use on that scent. That is not an argument against the Chunks — its finish, adhesion and 13% headroom are exactly right for a maker whose range includes Cinnamon Vanilla or Japanese Cherry Blossom — but it is an argument against buying a ceiling before you have read your oils.
What one percentage point actually costs
Because loads are stated as a percentage of wax weight, a 200 g candle makes the maths disappear: 1% is 2 g, 8% is 16 g, 10% is 20 g. Multiply 2 g by the oil’s per-gram rate and you have the price of every step you are considering — per candle, and across a production run.

The spread is the point. Moving from 8% to 10% costs ₹12.27 a candle on British Rose and ₹35.84 on Gilli Mitti Patchouli — a 2.9-fold difference for the same two points of load. If your range mixes a ₹2.83/g citrus with an ₹8.96/g earthy oil, a single house load across both is a decision to overspend on one of them.
Where to start on each CSI soy grade
Where it needs care: on the three oils capped at 9%, your ceiling is 9%, not 10%. And it is not the grade to buy if your range is built on Cinnamon Vanilla or Japanese Cherry Blossom, whose pages go to 13%.

Honestly: on a 10% oil you pay ₹18.32 more per 200 g candle than CSI 464 for headroom the oil will not let you use. Buy it for the finish and for the oils that actually reach 13%.

It is the most expensive of the three per kilogram, so the case for it is finish and cool-pour behaviour, not load headroom.

Eco Soy CSI 400 is the fourth container option and the cheapest at ₹399.00 per kilogram, but its page does not publish a fragrance load ceiling. That is not a reason to avoid it — it is a reason to let the oil page govern on its own and to confirm the wax side on WhatsApp before scaling. The page does state the process clearly: add fragrance at 85°C within an 80–90°C window, stir gently for two minutes, pour directly, and use Eco Wicks. It is sold as needing no additives.
The two factors only your own bench can settle
The melt pool sets the ceiling nobody prints
Fragrance leaves a candle from the liquid surface, so the pool is the doorway. A jar 70 mm across inside gives about 38.48 cm² of surface when the pool reaches the wall; if the wick only opens a 50 mm pool you are working with about 19.63 cm², roughly 51% of it. Doubling the oil does not double a doorway that is half shut. This is why a load increase so often disappoints: the wax is holding more fragrance, but the same small pool is releasing it. Fix the pool with a wick ladder and the wick guide by diameter before you spend on oil.
Cure decides when you are allowed to judge
Some CSI oil pages give a short cure of 24 to 48 hours. Read that as the earliest you can safely test burn, not as the point at which the scent has finished developing. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks, and 14–21 days by fragrance family is standard practice for soy container candles. A load judged on day two is almost always judged too low, and the usual response — adding two more points — is an expensive way to buy back something that twelve more days would have given free. Price decides which points you actually buy
At the series unit, a 200 g CSI 464 candle with British Rose at 8% and a C1 wick is ₹156.47 in materials; the same candle at 10% is ₹168.74. Swap in Gilli Mitti Patchouli at 8% and it is ₹250.74. Across 500 candles at 8% on Roasted Coffee the materials bill is ₹83,594.00, of which ₹29,904.00 is fragrance; taking it to 10% makes it ₹91,070.00. None of those numbers include your jar, lid, label, packaging, courier or GST, and the point of listing them is that fragrance is usually the fastest-moving line in the bill and the easiest to inflate by habit.
Setting the load for a new fragrance oil
What changes the answer in Indian conditions
Soy is a soft wax with a low melting point, and Indian ambient temperatures routinely sit above 40°C in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Nagpur through the summer. A candle poured at the top of its stated ceiling has the least margin when a delivery van parks in the sun for three hours. That is not an argument for pouring weak candles; it is an argument for knowing which of your scents are at their ceiling and which have headroom, and for testing summer stock in summer conditions rather than in an air-conditioned room in January.
Humidity works on the other side of the process. In Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata through the monsoon, jars that sit open on a bench collect moisture and wax picks up the ambient damp; the usual symptoms are wet-looking tops and pull-away from the glass, which get blamed on load when the real cause is the room. Keep oils sealed — the CSI 468 page asks for containers kept sealed and lists a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage — and pour into dry, room-temperature jars.

One clarification worth repeating, because it drives a lot of bad load decisions: flash point is a transport, storage and handling property. It is not the temperature at which fragrance “burns off”, and it does not rank hot throw. Sixteen of the 92 CSI oil pages publish a numeric flash point, and most of those sit far above the 80–90°C add window — Sandalwood 203°C, British Rose 192°C, Jasmine 185°C. Raising a load because an oil has a high flash point is a category error.
