Soy Candles · Hot Throw
Hot throw is the question every soy maker asks and no supplier can answer for your candle. It depends on the oil, but just as much on the melt pool, the cure and the room. This page is honest about what we do not know and specific about how you find out.
12
candles in the hot-throw matrix on this page: 3 oils × 2 wicks × 2 cure times, 200 g at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · ₹4,988.40 at CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils give the best hot throw in soy wax? We have not published throw measurements for any oil, and a ranking without measurements would be marketing. Hot throw in soy depends on the melt pool, cure, load and room as much as the oil. Three oils worth putting in a hot-throw test, with reasons, are Bergamot Amber, Spicy Cinnamon and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco.

Why is my soy candle hot throw weak? In general practice, the most common cause is a melt pool that does not reach the glass, so much of the oil never melts. Next come a short cure and a load below the oil's best point. Check the wick before you change the oil or raise the load.

How long should soy candles cure for hot throw? Soy is commonly cured before judging hot throw, often one to two weeks. We have not measured cure curves. The matrix on this page tests your candles at 7 and 14 days so you can see the difference in your own wax.

Will more fragrance oil improve hot throw? Only up to the oil's best point and only inside the ceiling: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464. If the pool is too small, no load fixes it. Strong Fragrance Oils for Soy Wax Candles has the load-ladder test.
The short answer
Honest position: No hot-throw, cold-throw or wax-compatibility measurements are published for any CSI oil. Candidates here are chosen for stated reasons, not measured throw.
Drivers: Melt pool (wick and jar width), cure time, load within the ceiling, the oil's formula, room and airflow. The first two are the ones makers most often get wrong.
Matrix: Bergamot Amber, Spicy Cinnamon and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco × Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2 × 7-day and 14-day cure: 12 × 200 g candles at 8%. Kit ₹4,988.40.
Hot throw starts at the melt pool — same oil, same load, two different wicks Dark band = liquid wax releasing scent · pale = solid wax still holding its oil Pool stops short of the glassoil locked in the rim · weak hot throw · tunnelling Pool reaches the glasswhole surface releasing · fair test of the oil →
An illustration of general candle-making practice, not a measurement. When the pool stops short of the glass, the wax around the edge stays solid and keeps its oil, so the candle smells weaker than its load suggests and tends to tunnel. Get the pool to the glass first. Only then is a hot-throw comparison between oils fair.
Straight answer
Which fragrance oils give the best hot throw in soy wax, and how do you find out?
Honestly: we have not published hot-throw measurements for any oil, and no list, ours or anyone's, can predict hot throw in your candle. Hot throw in soy comes from several things working together. The melt pool has to reach the glass, which is a wick and jar question. The candle has to be cured, commonly one to two weeks for soy. The load has to be at the oil's best point, inside the wax's ceiling (up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464). And the oil's formula has to release well at candle temperatures. Only the last is the oil. So test in full-size jars. Take three candidates, Bergamot Amber, Spicy Cinnamon and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, pour each with two wick widths and burn one set at 7 days and one at 14. Twelve 200 g candles at 8% cost ₹4,988.40 in materials and tell you which oil, which wick and which cure give your best hot throw.
One line: fix the melt pool and the cure first, then compare oils. Hot throw is a result you measure in your jar, not a claim you buy.
The matrix uses three 100 g bottles: Bergamot Amber ₹560.00, Spicy Cinnamon ₹699.00 and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹899.00 (₹2,158.00). Each supplies four test candles at 16 g and leaves 36 g for a retained reference candle or a load check.

Why no one can rank hot throw for you

A hot-throw ranking is only as good as the candle it was measured in. Nobody measured yours.

Search for "best hot throw fragrance oils" and you will find confident top-ten lists. Ask what they were measured in (which wax, which wick, which jar, what load, what cure, what room) and the answers are usually missing. That is not a quibble. The same oil can throw well in one soy candle and poorly in another because the wick leaves half the surface solid. A list that ignores this does not tell you which oil is best. It tells you which oil someone liked.

CSI has not published hot-throw, cold-throw or wax-compatibility measurements for any of its 93 oils. We could write a ranking from the best-selling sort, but that sort tells you what people buy, not what throws best in soy. What we can do is explain what drives hot throw in soy, name candidates for stated reasons, and give you a matrix that measures the thing you actually care about: hot throw in your jar, with your wick, at your cure.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A "best hot throw" page is the easiest place to push premium oils: put the ₹9-a-gram oils at the top and let the price imply performance. We will not do it. Price reflects the formula, not how well an oil throws in your soy blend. The matrix below deliberately includes a ₹5.60-a-gram oil next to a ₹8.99 one. If the cheaper one wins in your jar, buy it.

What drives hot throw in soy

These are the drivers of hot throw as general candle-making practice describes them, from most to least often overlooked. None of the descriptions is a CSI measurement. Each row tells you what to check and which CSI item, if any, is involved.

Hot-throw drivers in a soy container candle · general candle-making practice
What makes a lit soy candle fill a room
Driver Why it matters What to check What you control
Melt pool Scent leaves the liquid wax. A pool that stops short of the glass leaves oil locked in the solid rim. Is the pool edge-to-edge by the time you would normally blow it out? Wick type and size (Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2, cotton braided, wooden)
Cure time Soy is commonly cured before judging hot throw, often one to two weeks. Test every candle at the same cure, then again a week later. Your calendar
Load, within the ceiling More oil helps up to the point where the oil stops improving. Found by a load ladder (method) Chunks up to 13% · CSI 464 up to 10%
The oil's formula Which materials are volatile at candle temperatures. Same wick, load and cure; oil is the only change. Choice of oil
Jar width Wider jars need a bigger pool, and a bigger pool releases more. Test in the jar you sell in. White Matte Glass Jar ₹70.80
Room and airflow Scent has to travel. Fans and open doors disperse it. Same room, door shut, same position. Where you test

The melt pool leads the list for a reason. Soy releases scent from liquid wax. If the wick leaves a narrow pool, most of the surface stays solid, and the oil in it contributes nothing. It is also the driver most makers misread. They see a weak candle, blame the oil, raise the load, and the candle stays weak because the pool never changed. Wick sizing for a given jar diameter is not published in our data, so the matrix below tests two wick widths directly: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹5.90 each) and Thick C2 (₹9.44 each in the 20-pack, ₹94.40 for 10).

Cure is the second trap. Soy is commonly given time to cure before hot-throw testing, and makers often report the throw developing over the first week or two. We have not measured this in CSI waxes. That is why the matrix burns one set of candles at 7 days and a matching set at 14. If the 14-day candles are clearly better, you have learned your minimum cure. If they are the same, you can ship sooner.

Test in the jar you sell in
Hot throw depends on jar width, because a wider jar needs a wider pool. A test in a small tin tells you about the tin. The matrix uses the White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), the default jar across this cluster. If you sell in a different vessel, swap it in and keep everything else the same.

Three oils for the matrix, and why

Three oils is enough to learn from and few enough to burn in one room over two weekends. They are chosen to span families and price tiers, which is the most useful comparison for a range decision. None of the reasons is a throw claim.

Why each oil is in the matrix
Oil Family ₹/g at 100 g Oil per candle Reason to test
Bergamot Amber Citrus-amber ₹5.60 ₹89.60 #11 in the best-selling sort · core-tier price · a citrus top over a warm base tests how both halves hold up when lit
Spicy Cinnamon Spice ₹6.99 ₹111.84 Spice oils are a common festive choice for room fill · 7.0% cheaper per gram at 1 kg · relevant for Diwali on 8 November

If you would rather test oils from the hub's tester set, Blue Ocean or Sandalwood slot straight into the matrix. The design works for any three oils. What matters is that each oil sees both wicks and both cure times, so the comparison is fair. For the premium end, premium oils for luxury soy lists more candidates. For a first test across every family, see the soy hub.

The oil × wick × cure matrix

Twelve candles, three questions: which oil, which wick, which cure. Change one thing at a time and the answers fall out.

Every candle is 200 g at 8% (16 g oil, 184 g wax) in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, in a White Matte Glass Jar. The load is fixed at 8%, inside both published ceilings, because this matrix is about wick and cure, not load. Each oil needs 64 g for four candles, so one 100 g bottle per oil is enough. The wax need is 2,208 g, or about 2.3 kg with a 5% allowance.

Reading the results

Read the matrix in this order. First, the pool. For each oil, did either wick give a full pool by three hours? If only the Thick C2 did, the Thin C1 scores for that oil tell you about the wick, not the oil. Discard them and compare oils on the Thick C2 candles. If neither wick reached the glass, the jar needs a different wick altogether. Ask us on WhatsApp, and do not judge the oils yet.

Second, the cure. Compare each oil's 7-day and 14-day scores on the wick that gave a full pool. A clear gain means your minimum cure is nearer 14 days. No gain means 7 is enough for that oil. Oils can differ, and it is common for heavier gourmands to be judged after a longer cure. Third, the oils. Only now compare the three oils, on the same wick and the same cure. The highest 3-hour doorway score with a character score of 2 or 3 and a clean burn is your best hot throw, in your candle.

The oil that was never tested. A maker burns three oils on day 3 with a thin wick, finds them all weak, and concludes soy "has no hot throw". Nothing was tested except the wick and the calendar. The matrix exists to separate those. A result where every oil is weak points to the wick or the cure. A result where one oil is weak points to the oil.

The cost side of the answer: at 8%, Bergamot Amber puts ₹89.60 of oil in the candle, Spicy Cinnamon ₹111.84 and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹143.84. The Thick C2 wick costs ₹3.54 more than the Thin C1. If the Thick C2 turns a weak candle into a strong one, that is the cheapest hot-throw improvement you will ever buy. It costs far less than moving to a pricier oil or raising the load. Fragrance oils at 6–8% load has the full cost-by-load tables.

The CSI principle
Pool first, cure second, oil third.
Hot throw in soy is only a fair test of the oil once the melt pool reaches the glass and the candle has cured. Fix those two with a wick-and-cure matrix. Then the oil comparison means something, and the best hot throw is a result you can repeat.
If every oil seems weak, the oil is not the problem. Look at the wick.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We have not measured hot throw for any oil in any wax. This page therefore gives no throw ranking. It names candidates for stated reasons and gives you a matrix that measures hot throw where it matters, in your jar.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. The Thick C2 10-pack price comes from the 25 September pull. Thin C1 wick, jar and centring-device prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-candle and matrix totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

Melt pool, cure and room effects are general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements. The 7- and 14-day cure points, the 8% load and the scoring sheet are working assumptions for a fair comparison. Load ceilings (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oil has the best hot throw in soy wax?
No honest single answer exists without testing in your candle, and CSI has not published throw measurements. Put three candidates, such as Bergamot Amber, Spicy Cinnamon and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, through a wick-and-cure matrix and let the scores decide.
How do I get a better hot throw in soy candles?
Make sure the melt pool reaches the glass (wick), cure the candles (commonly one to two weeks for soy), set the load at the oil's best point within the ceiling (13% Chunks, 10% CSI 464), and test in a closed room. In that order.
Does wick size affect hot throw?
In general practice, yes, through the melt pool. A wick that leaves a narrow pool leaves much of the oil in solid wax. Wick sizes for jar diameters are not published in our data, so compare two widths, such as Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2, in your jar.
Why does my soy candle smell strong cold but not when burning?
Cold throw comes from the surface of solid wax. Hot throw needs a liquid pool. A strong cold throw with weak hot throw usually points to the pool or the cure, not the oil. Strong Fragrance Oils for Soy Wax Candles explains the difference.
Is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 464 better for hot throw?
We have not measured it. Chunks allow up to 13% load and CSI 464 up to 10%, so Chunks give more room to test. Run the same matrix in both if you are choosing between them.
How long should I burn a soy candle to test hot throw?
Long enough for the pool to reach the glass, then score at a fixed time, such as 1 hour and 3 hours after lighting. Always score from the doorway after a few minutes outside the room.
