High-Performance Fragrance Oils for Candle Making in India
शेयर करना
Which CSI oils have buyer evidence on both throws? Two: Lavender ("Cold through and hot though both are perfect.") and British Rose ("strong fragrance in cold throw and hot throw"). Woody Oud, Roasted Coffee and Orchard Pear have reviews describing strength.
What about colour and load stability? No review covers them for any oil, so they are always yours to test. As a precaution, treat vanilla-named oils as higher colour risk in white wax.
How do I test all four? Four 150g jars per oil — day-14 and day-21 burns, an unburned colour-and-cold-throw jar, and one at the wax's stated ceiling — against an unscented control. A four-oil panel costs ₹5,743.60.
Performance, defined in four tests
Makers usually mean one thing by performance — "it smells strong" — and then get caught out by the other three. A candle that fills the room but turns a white wax beige by week three has failed a customer who bought it for its look. A candle that smells wonderful unlit but has an oily film by the time it reaches a shop has failed a retailer. Performance is the combination, measured on the candle you actually sell. Here are the four tests and what each one catches.
| Dimension | What it is | How to measure it | What a fail looks like | Buyer evidence at CSI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold throw | Scent from the unlit candle — what sells it on a shelf | Remove the lid at day 14 and 21; score 1–5 at arm's length | Customer lifts the lid and smells little | Lavender, British Rose |
| Hot throw | Scent released from the melt pool while burning — what earns the reorder | Burn in a closed room; score 1–5 from the doorway at 30, 60, 120 minutes | "Smells nice but I can't smell it when it's lit" | Lavender (two reviews), British Rose; strength for Woody Oud, Roasted Coffee, Orchard Pear |
| Colour stability | The wax stays the colour you intended through cure, display and daylight | Compare an unburned scented jar with an unscented control at day 21 | White or pastel candle yellowing or browning on the shelf | None |
| Stability at load | The oil stays bound in the wax at the load you pour | Pour one jar at the wax's stated ceiling; inspect the surface at day 14 and 21 | Oily film, droplets, a weeping surface or a drowned wick | None |
| Cost check | Oil cost per candle at the production load | 1 kg price ÷ 1,000 × grams of oil | The oil passes, but only at a load your price cannot carry | Priced from live CSI stock |
The right-hand column is the honest core of this page. Buyer reviews can tell you something about throw, because a buyer who lights a candle notices the scent. Almost nobody writes a review about colour drift at week three or a faint film on the surface, so there is no published evidence on those two dimensions for any oil in CSI's catalogue. That does not make them less important. It makes them the dimensions most likely to catch out a maker who scales on a strong-smelling sample. The cold-throw side is covered in depth in what is cold throw in candles.
The performance matrix: 16 oils
Here are sixteen in-stock CSI oils across the main families, set out against the four dimensions. Evidence means a verbatim buyer review. Flag means a precaution based on the oil's family as its name places it, not a measured result. Test means nothing is known and your scorecard decides. Oil cost is per 200g candle at 8% (16g) at 1 kg pricing.

Three things stand out. First, no oil is evidenced on more than two of the four dimensions — including the two best-reviewed oils in the store. A performance claim that stops at throw is incomplete for every one of them. Second, the two oils with the most evidence are not the expensive ones: British Rose is the second-cheapest oil in the matrix per candle, Lavender sits mid-table, and the dearest, Dark Vanilla, carries a vanilla colour flag. Third, the flags cluster by family — vanilla for colour, citrus for fade, spice and coffee gourmands for a white-wax colour check — which tells you what to test first on each oil, so a panel fails fast where failure is likeliest. For more on hot throw evidence specifically, see best candle fragrance oils for strong hot throw.
Colour stability: the dimension nobody reviews
Some fragrance materials react over time with light, heat and air and tint the wax they are in. The best-known case in candle making is vanillin, the main component of vanilla scents, which can turn pale wax yellow or brown during cure and on display. Some spice and gourmand oils can do something similar. It is a gradual change, which is why a candle that looked perfect on pouring day can look tired at week three — and why no buyer mentions it in a review written the week the parcel arrived. The mechanism, and which families are least likely to discolour, are set out in why some vanilla fragrance oils turn candle wax yellow and which candle fragrances are least likely to discolour white wax.
For a buyer, colour stability changes the performance ranking depending on the product. In an amber jar or a deeply dyed candle, a small tint may be invisible and irrelevant. In a white soy candle in clear glass, sold on a clean, minimal look, it is a fail. One CSI customer, Antara Srinivas Iyer, reviewing a liquid dye, wrote of "Good vibrant colours in both luxury soy wax and coconut soy wax" — a reminder that makers building coloured ranges care about colour as much as scent, and that any colour test should be run with your dye in, not just in plain wax.
| Your product | Vanilla-named oils (Dark Vanilla ₹122.34, Dark Vanilla Oud ₹91.06, Cinnamon Vanilla ₹72.88 per candle) | Spice and coffee gourmands | Other families |
|---|---|---|---|
| White or ivory wax in clear glass | Colour test is a gate — fail means no launch in this format | Colour test before launch | Colour test as routine |
| Pastel dyed wax | Colour test with your dye at your dose | Colour test with your dye | Routine |
| Deep dyed wax, or amber, black or matte jars | Lower concern — check the top surface, which is what customers see | Lower concern | Routine |
| Wax melts and tins | Check the visible surface through cure | Check surface | Routine |
Stability at load: performance that holds
Stability at load is whether the oil stays bound in the wax at the percentage you pour. Every wax has a limit, and CSI's wax pages state it: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% (8–13%, 10% recommended), Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. Those are wax formulation limits. Whether a particular oil sits comfortably at that limit in your jar and your climate is a separate question — and the one this dimension answers.
The test is simple: pour one jar per oil at the wax's stated ceiling, cure it beside the others, and inspect the surface at day 14 and day 21 for an oily film, droplets or a wet feel. An oil that stays clean at the ceiling has headroom — you can raise its production load later without re-qualifying from scratch. An oil that sweats at the ceiling but is clean at your production load still passes, with a note that its load must not rise. The cost of that headroom is visible per candle.
| Oil | 8% · 16g | 10% · 20g | 13% ceiling · 26g | Extra per candle, 10% → 13% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹49.09 | ₹61.36 | ₹79.77 | ₹18.41 |
| Fresh Strawberries | ₹56.64 | ₹70.80 | ₹92.04 | ₹21.24 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | ₹72.88 | ₹91.10 | ₹118.42 | ₹27.32 |
| Pumpkin Spice | ₹84.96 | ₹106.20 | ₹138.06 | ₹31.86 |
| Bergamot Amber | ₹86.99 | ₹108.74 | ₹141.36 | ₹32.62 |
| Dark Vanilla | ₹122.34 | ₹152.92 | ₹198.80 | ₹45.88 |
Four oils worth scoring next
The best-reviewed oils have already had their throw covered in CSI's other guides. These four are chosen to exercise the scorecard: one praised oil with a colour flag, one well-liked fruity oil with no throw evidence, one spice oil with a colour flag, and one citrus-over-amber blend that tests the fade question. Each card shows every size, the price per kilo, and how many 150g scorecard jars at 10% (15g each) a pack fills.

The four-dimension scorecard test
This is the test behind the headline figure. It scores four oils on all four dimensions in one 21-day run, with British Rose as the benchmark — the oil with buyer evidence on both throws and the lowest cost per candle of the two — and one unscented control jar for colour. The panel below uses three of the pick oils; swap in any oil you are considering.
| Item | Pack | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose (benchmark) | 100 gm | ₹342.20 | 3 jars × 15g + 1 ceiling jar × 19.5g = 64.5g |
| Dark Vanilla | 100 gm | ₹790 | 64.5g |
| Fresh Strawberries | 100 gm | ₹377.60 | 64.5g |
| Bergamot Amber | 100 gm | ₹560 | 64.5g |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 2 × 1 kg + 500 g | ₹1,497 | 4 × (3 × 135g + 130.5g) + 150g control = 2,292g |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Pack of 20 | ₹1,888 | 17 jars — clear glass so colour is visible — plus 3 spare |
| Eco Candle Wicks · Thick (C2) | 20 wicks | ₹188.80 | One wick size across all 17 jars |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 40 | ₹100 | Centring held constant |
| Panel total | ₹5,743.60 | ₹1,435.90 per oil |
| Dimension | Jar | Measure | Example pass line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold throw | C | 1–5 at arm's length, day 14 and 21 | 3 or more at day 21, and within a point of the benchmark |
| Hot throw | A (day 14) · B (day 21) | 1–5 from doorway at 60 and 120 min | 3 or more at 60 min on B, and within a point of the benchmark |
| Colour stability | C vs control | Visible difference at day 21 | None you would not sell in this format |
| Stability at load | A, B, C at 10% · D at 13% | Surface film or droplets, day 14 and 21 | Clean at production load; D result recorded as headroom |
| Cost | — | Oil per candle at production load, 1 kg pricing | Fits your price — e.g. ₹61.36 for British Rose at 10% in a 200g candle |
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and does not publish performance scores for its oils. It would be easy to label a dozen oils "high-performance". Instead this page shows that no oil in our catalogue has published evidence on more than two of the four things that matter, names the ones that do, and gives you a ₹1,435.90-per-oil test to settle the rest — because the only performance claim worth making to your own customers is one you have measured.
Every price and pack size comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. Reviews are quoted verbatim from Judge.me. Colour and fade flags are general precautions by fragrance family inferred from oil names, not measured results. Wax loads and temperatures are quoted as the product pages state them — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468, up to 10% for CSI 464 — and are formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Pass lines in the scorecard are examples.
