CSI Wick Lab · 9 cm Jars
At 9 cm with 10% oud, a large single and a pair are both plausible, so pour both on day one. Four gates at burn 3 pick a winner or a round-2 move, and a full life approves it.
4 candles
round 1: two on Cotton Braided, two on a C1 pair · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
I'm using a 9 cm jar with 10% oud. Should I start testing with one large wick or two smaller ones? Start with both. At 9 cm a single Cotton Braided is plausible (its page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm"), and a heavy oil at the ceiling is the kind of candle that often ends up on two wicks. Pour two candles on one Cotton Braided and two on a pair of Eco C1, and let round 1 compare them.

What does "winning" round 1 mean? Both candles of a build pass four gates at burn 3: edge, flame, carbon, soot. If both builds win, the single wins the tie. A round-1 winner is a candidate, not an approved build; it still needs a full life.

Is 10% too much? It is the top of both pages: Woody Oud states "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464 "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". If both builds carbon heavily, that is a load question before it is a wick question, and round 2 checks 9% and 8%.

What does round 1 cost? Four 300 g candles at 10% (worked example): 120 g of Woody Oud, 1,080 g of CSI 464, two Cotton Braided and four C1, ₹1,139.19 of materials, your own jars not included.
The short answer
The verdict: don't choose; test both builds from day one. Two candles on one Cotton Braided, two on a C1 pair, same jar, fill, 10% Woody Oud, wax, cure and room.
Winning: both candles pass edge, flame, carbon and soot at burn 3. Both builds win: keep the single. Neither wins: the kind of failure picks round 2.
Round 2: confirm a winner with two more candles; a split verdict tests a C2 pair and a wider C1 pair; carbon on both builds tests 9% and 8% on the better build.
The honest limit: Cotton Braided is CSI's largest ready-made cotton wick, CSI lists no jar at 9 cm, and 10% is at the ceiling on both pages. There may be no CSI single that carries 10% oud at 9 cm.
Opening round for 10% oud at 9 cm: both builds, then one move Worked example: 300 g candles, CSI 464, jar measured 9 cm outside. Gates read at burn 3 on both candles of a build: edge ring 1 mm or less · trimmed flame about 5 cm or less · carbon grade 1 or less · clean soot card. Our judgement, not CSI data. ROUND 1 · 4 candles · both builds from day one 2 × one Cotton Braided, centred 2 × a pair of Eco C1, 4.0 cm apart (starting point) Oil 120 g · wax 1,080 g · cure, then 3 sessions 1 · Both pass all four gates, both candles 2 · Only the pair passes 3 · Single carbons or soots; pair short at the edge 4 · Both builds carbon heavily (grade 2+) Keep the single (simpler build). Round 2: 2 more singles to confirm. Oil 60 g. Then full life. Pair it is. Round 2: 2 more pairs to confirm. Oil 60 g. Then full life. Split verdict. Round 2 of 4: 2 × C2 pair, 2 × C1 pair 4.5 cm. Oil 120 g. Winner → full life. Load confound. Round 2 of 4 on the better build: 2 at 9%, 2 at 8%. Oil 102 g. Winner → full life. What "winning" round 1 means, and what it doesn't Wins: both candles of a build pass all four gates at burn 3, in still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm. Tie-break: if both builds win, the single wins: one wick to set, one to trim, nothing to space. Not a win: one candle of two passing; a pass at burn 1 only; a pass with the flame leaning to the glass. Not approval: a round-1 winner is only a candidate. Approval needs a full life to about 1 cm left. At the ceiling: Woody Oud "candles (6-10%)", CSI 464 "Up to 10%": 10% is the edge on both pages. If CSI 464's ceiling is read on wax weight, 10% of total is past it; 9% of total satisfies both readings. Round 2 adds 2–4 candles. Every round-2 cell holds the jar, fill, wax, cure and room from round 1, and changes one thing.
The opening round as a tree. Round 1 pours both builds at once; the four gates at burn 3 sort the result into one of four outcomes, and each outcome has one round-2 move of two to four candles. Grams are for 300 g candles in the worked example. The gates, the tie-break and the moves are our judgement, not CSI data, and no round-1 result is an approval until a full life has passed.
Straight answer
I'm using a 9 cm jar with 10% oud fragrance. Should I start testing with one large wick or two smaller wicks?
Start with both, in the same pour. A 9 cm jar sits where a large single and a pair can both work, and a heavy oud at the top of its range is exactly the case where makers often guess wrong. Testing one build first costs you a whole cure and three sessions if the guess fails, and even if it passes you never learn whether the other would have been better. Round 1: four 300 g candles at 10% Woody Oud in CSI 464, two on one Cotton Braided and two on a pair of Eco C1, cured and burned together for three sessions of about 3–4 hours. A build wins when both its candles pass edge, flame, carbon and soot at burn 3. If both win, keep the single: it is simpler to make. If neither wins, the way they fail chooses round 2: a single that carbons with a pair that is short at the edge points to a bigger or wider pair; carbon on both builds points to the load, which at 10% is at the ceiling of both pages. Whatever wins still has to pass a full life before production.
One line: at 9 cm with 10% oud, pour the single and the pair side by side; round 1 compares, round 2 moves one thing, and the full life approves.
Round 1 in wicks: Cotton Braided 10 for ₹120.00 and Eco C1 20 for ₹118.00 (the C1 10-pack is out of stock on 29 September 2026): ₹238.00, with spares for round 2. Don't buy C2 until round 1 asks for it.
Cotton Braided — ₹120.00 for 10

Why open with both builds

One arm is a guess with a week's delay attached. Two arms are a comparison.

The usual advice is "start with a single and go double if it fails". That sounds economical, and at 6 or 7 cm it usually is. At 9 cm it is not, because the single and the pair are both genuine candidates, and each has a week of cure and three burns attached before you learn anything.

Three ways to open · worked example · 300 g at 10% Woody Oud
What each opening costs, and what it can tell you
Opening Materials What you learn
Start single only 2 candles, ₹569.80 If it fails, round 2 is the pair from scratch: another cure and three sessions, and still no comparison.
Start pair only the same count If it passes, you never learn whether one wick would have done, and you pay the labour of two wicks forever.
Both from day one 4 candles, ₹1,139.19 One cure, one set of sessions, a direct comparison. The extra arm costs ₹569.40.

The second arm costs two candles, ₹569.40 of materials in the worked example. What it saves is time: if the single fails in round 1, the pair's result is already on the table, and round 2 can refine instead of restart. For anyone pouring oud for a season, the week matters more than the rupees.

The jar itself is your own; CSI lists no jar at 9 cm. Measured 9 cm across the outside, on an assumed 0.35 cm wall, it is 8.3 cm inside with a 54.11 cm² pool, 27.05 cm² per wick for a pair. Measure yours at three heights. The broader single-versus-double trade-off in large jars, before any oil is chosen, is single versus double wicks in a large jar; the diameter at which you should start comparing the two at all is the run-both zone.

10% oud: what "at the ceiling" means for the wick

At the ceiling, the load is a suspect before the wick is.

Woody Oud's page states "candles (6-10%)". CSI 464's page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". By the two-ceilings rule the lower governs, and here they agree: 10% is the edge. Neither is a regulatory limit, and neither is a performance target; the most oil the wax is stated to hold is not the same as the load that burns best.

There is a wrinkle. CSI works loads as a percentage of total candle weight, and a 300 g candle at 10% is 30 g of oil and 270 g of wax. CSI 464's page does not say which basis its 10% uses. Read on wax weight, 10% of total is 11.11% of wax, past the ceiling; 10% of wax would be 9.09% of total. If you want a top load that satisfies both readings, 9% of total (9.89% of wax) does. The full conversion is in the load-basis post. None of this changes round 1, but it is why round 2's load check starts at 9%.

Why does the load matter to the wick? Heavy, resinous and woody oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick, sootier flames and slower reach to the glass, and the effect tends to grow with load. A wick that carbons at 10% might be fine at 8%. That is a tendency, not CSI data, and it is exactly what a round-1 result can hint at: if both builds carbon heavily, the common factor is the oil at its ceiling, not the wick count. The same confound in a smaller jar, where the oil and the load changed together, is untangled in the 7.5 cm oud confound.

Cure first, or round 1 lies
The Woody Oud page says "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing - oriental fragrance oils like oud benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw." Many makers wait a week before judging an oud candle. Cure is not a wick variable, but a candle burned early can read differently from the same candle a week later, so cure all four for the same time and write the date on each base.

Round 1: four candles, four gates

Both builds, one pour, the same four gates.
1
Measure and mark. Measure the inside of one jar at three heights. Code the bases S1, S2 (single) and D1, D2 (pair).
2
Wick. One Cotton Braided centred in S1 and S2. Two C1 on a line through the centre in D1 and D2; 4.0 cm apart puts each 2.15 cm from the glass along the line in an 8.3 cm inside, a starting point for testing. Set-up geometry in detail: the 9 cm double-wick setup drawing.
3
One batch, one pour. 120 g of Woody Oud into 1,080 g of CSI 464 (1,200 g at 10%), mixed well at the wax page's temperatures (pour 80–90°C), divided into four 300 g candles.
4
Cure alike. At least the page's 48–72 hours; a week is common for oud.
5
Burn three sessions, all four together. About 3–4 hours each (the rough hour-per-2.5 cm rule gives 3.3 hours), still air, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, fully cooled between.
6
Score the gates at burn 3. Every candle, every gate, with a photo. A build wins only if both its candles pass all four.
The four gates at burn 3 · our judgement
What passes, and what to watch with oud
Gate Pass Oud note (tendency)
Edge Pool meets the glass at N, E, S and W by the end of burn 3; ring 1 mm or less Heavy oils often reach the glass more slowly; a single that is "nearly there" at burn 3 is not there.
Flame Trimmed flame about 5 cm or less at 60 and 120 minutes (the top of a commonly used 2.5–5 cm range) A single fed a 10% heavy oil can run tall, or small and dull; log both.
Carbon Wick carbon grade 1 or less at 120 minutes (0 none, 1 bead, 2 cap, 3 cap shedding: our scale) Carbon is the gate heavy oils are commonly linked to failing (a tendency).
Soot A white card held well above the flame for a few seconds stays clean Soot usually follows carbon; record it separately anyway.

The flame gate uses the ruler method from the 9 cm flame-height protocol. Carbon is the gate to watch most closely: heavy oils at high load are commonly linked to carbon that builds over a session and over several burns, which is why burn 3 counts, not burn 1. Carbon that appears only after many cycles is its own diagnostic, mushrooming that appears only after several burn cycles.

What winning means. A build wins round 1 when both its candles pass all four gates. If both builds win, the single takes the tie: one wick to set, trim and explain on the label, and nothing to space. If one candle of a build passes and the other doesn't, that build has not won; check the wick positions before you read anything into it. And a win is a candidate, not an approval. Heavy oils and pairs both commonly change character in the lower half of a jar, so the winner goes on to about 1 cm left before production.

Round 2: the move each result points to

Round 2 changes one thing, chosen by how round 1 failed.
Round 2 by outcome · 300 g candles · worked example
Outcome → move → candles → oil
Round 1 outcome Round 2 move Candles Oil
1 · Both pass Keep the single; pour 2 more singles to confirm 2 60 g
2 · Only the pair passes Pour 2 more pairs to confirm 2 60 g
3 · Single carbons, pair short 2 × C2 pair at 4.0 cm; 2 × C1 pair at 4.5 cm 4 120 g
4 · Both carbon heavily The better build at 9% (2) and at 8% (2) 4 102 g

Outcome 1, both pass. The single is enough. Two more singles confirm it isn't a lucky pair of candles; then all the singles run to full life. Keep the pair's burn-3 records: if the single fails late, the pair is your round-3 fallback with a head start.

Outcome 2, only the pair passes. 10% oud at 9 cm wants two flames. Confirm with two more pairs and run the full life. Watch the lower half closely: two flames add heat to the glass as the jar empties, so judge by observation and with a non-contact thermometer if you own one (CSI does not list one), never by touch.

Outcome 3, a split verdict. The single carbons or soots, too much wick for this oil, while the C1 pair is clean but short at the edge, too little. The answer lies between them on the pair side. Round 2 tests the two ways to give the pair more reach: a C2 pair at the same 4.0 cm (₹18.88 a candle in wicks), and the C1 pair moved out to 4.5 cm, 1.9 cm from the glass along the line. Which of those reaches the glass cleanly is your build. If that sounds like the spacing-versus-size question, it is; the full 2×2 is the spacing × size test.

Outcome 4, carbon on both. Both builds grow carbon caps (grade 2 or worse) at 10%. The wick count is probably not the problem. Take the better build and pour two at 9% (27 g of oil in 300 g) and two at 8% (24 g). If carbon clears at 9%, you also land on the load that satisfies both readings of CSI 464's ceiling. Dropping from 10% to 9% saves ₹13.59 of oil per candle; to 8%, ₹27.18. Argued against our own interest: if 8% is where the carbon clears, 10% was costing you oil and burn quality at once, and the right purchase is less oud, not more wick.

One move per round
It is tempting, after a split round 1, to try a C2 pair at 4.5 cm and 9%. Don't: if it works, you won't know which of the three changes did it, and your production record will carry three changes you can't unpick. Round 2 changes one thing from the round-1 build it starts from. Three wicks in a larger jar with oud are a different question: 12 cm, three wicks, 8% oud.

Grams, wicks and rupees for both rounds

Woody Oud is flat per gram from 100 g up, so buy for the rounds you will actually run.

Round 1 consumes 120 g of Woody Oud (₹543.60), 1,080 g of CSI 464 (₹547.99) and six wicks (₹47.60): ₹1,139.19, your jars not included. From nothing, round 1 costs ₹1,729.92: Woody Oud 100 g and 50 g (₹724.52, leaving 30 g, one more candle), CSI 464 1 kg and 500 g (₹767.40), a Cotton Braided 10 and a C1 20. If you already own the oil and wax, the wicks are ₹238.00.

Per candle at 10%, oil, wax and wick only: ₹284.90 on one Cotton Braided, ₹284.70 on a C1 pair, ₹291.78 on a C2 pair. The wick build moves the cost by paise; the load moves it by rupees (₹135.90 of oil per candle at 10%, ₹122.31 at 9%). All figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Buying for both rounds. Round 2 adds 60 g to 120 g of oil, depending on the outcome. Three 100 g bottles (₹1,359.36) cover round 1 and any four-candle round 2 at 10%. The 500 g (₹2,265.60) covers both and a full-life pair, with more left. Per gram they are identical; choose by whether oud is going into production.

Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
The oil in the question. The page lists "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk", states "candles (6-10%)" and claims "Strong throw". Its FAQ says "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing - oriental fragrance oils like oud benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw." No vanillin figure or wick advice in the text we captured. Argued against our own interest: the 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg are all ₹4.53 a gram, so the 500 g saves nothing per gram. It is the tidy buy if you will run both rounds and a full-life pair (it leaves 260 g after two four-candle rounds at 10%, 8 more candles); for round 1 alone, two 100 g (₹906.24) do the job and leave 80 g. The 50 g is dearer at ₹5.43 a gram.

Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The single arm. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", which makes it the natural single for a 9 cm jar, and it is CSI's largest ready-made cotton wick: if the single carbons at 10%, there is no bigger single to try and no smaller single between it and C2. Round 1 uses two from a pack of 10, leaving 8. Flat ₹12.00 per wick at every pack size.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
The pair arm starts on C1: each wick serves half the pool, 27.05 cm² here. The page states no size or jar range in the text we captured. Stock on 29 September 2026: the C1 10-pack is out of stock; the 20-pack covers round 1 with 16 spare. Buy C2 only if round 1 lands on outcome 3. Argued against our own interest: no sized, tabbed wick sits between C1 and C2, so a pair that is "almost right" may need spacing, not a CSI size.

The page says "3-hole layout fits single, double, or triple wick setups" and fits jars "up to 9 cm wide": a jar measured 9 cm outside is at that stated limit, so lay one across your rim first. The page states no hole spacing; measure it and use the outer holes if their pitch is close to the 4.0 cm starting point, or a card template if not. For the two singles, the Wick Centering Device (₹118.00 for 5, one hole, for openings "less than 4"") is the cheaper hold.

Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The worked example's wax. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C", and does not say whether 10% is of total or of wax weight. At 10% of total you are at the ceiling on CSI's convention; read on wax weight, 10% of total is 11.11% of wax, past it. That is why round 2's load check starts at 9%. Round 1 needs 1,080 g: a 1 kg bag and a 500 g bag (₹767.40) leave 420 g; price is flat per gram from 1 kg.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here

5 kg ₹2,537.00 ₹0.51 per g both rounds and the full-life candles
10 kg ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 per g production; flat per gram from 1 kg

Skip: a second oud "to compare" in round 1. White Royal Oud (₹810.00 for 100 g) and Dark Vanilla Oud (₹590.00 for 100 g) are different oils with their own pages; adding one turns a wick test into an oil test. Skip Eco C2 until round 1 lands on outcome 3. And skip a bigger pack of anything until a build has passed its full life: every wick here is flat per wick at every pack size.

The CSI principle
When two builds are plausible, pour both on day one.
A heavy oil at its ceiling in a 9 cm jar is where guesses are most expensive. Round 1 compares, round 2 moves one thing, and only a full life approves.
"A second test arm costs two candles. A wrong first guess costs a week."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oud, wicks, holder and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says our 500 g oud saves nothing per gram, that the answer may be less oil rather than more wick, and that our range may have no single wick that carries 10% oud at 9 cm.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Load, cure and wick wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (CSI 464's load basis, Woody Oud's vanillin and wick advice), we say so.

The two-arm opening, the four gates, the tie-break and the round-2 moves are our judgement; the 300 g fill, 0.35 cm wall and spacings are worked-example inputs; flame, trim and session figures are commonly cited rules of thumb. CSI publishes no wick-performance data for any oil. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use one wick or two for a 9 cm oud candle?
Test both from the start: two candles on one large wick (for CSI, Cotton Braided) and two on a pair of smaller wicks (Eco C1). Keep the build whose candles both pass edge, flame, carbon and soot at burn 3; if both pass, keep the single.
Is 10% fragrance load too high for oud in soy wax?
It is the top of both CSI pages involved: Woody Oud "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464 "up to 10%". It is allowed, not required. If the wick carbons on every build at 10%, test 9% and 8% before changing the wick again.
Why does my oud candle mushroom?
Heavy, woody and resinous oils at high loads are commonly linked to carbon build-up on the wick, as is a wick too large for the pool. Test the wick build and the load separately, one change per round.
How long should I cure an oud candle before burn testing?
The Woody Oud page says 48–72 hours for soy and that oriental oils "benefit from full cure time". Many makers wait about a week before judging. Cure all test candles for the same time.
How many candles do I need for a first wick test on a wide jar?
Four is a sensible opening: two per build, both builds at once. Round 2 then adds two to four candles, and the winner runs a full life before production.
Is the Woody Oud 500 g cheaper per gram than the 100 g?
No. The 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg are all ₹4.53 a gram on 29 September 2026; only the 15 g and 50 g cost more per gram. Buy the size that matches the rounds you will run.
Before you pick a wick for 10% oud
Pour the single and the pair together; let round 1 choose round 2.
Four 300 g candles at 10% Woody Oud: two on Cotton Braided, two on a C1 pair. Score edge, flame, carbon and soot at burn 3, then run the one round-2 move your result points to. Round 1 wicks cost ₹238.00. Send us your gates on WhatsApp.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 8.5–9 cm jars (4241–4260). It owns the opening-round design for a heavy oil at CSI 464's 10% ceiling in a 9 cm jar: both builds from day one (one Cotton Braided v a C1 pair, two candles each), what winning round 1 means, the four round-2 moves, and grams and ₹ for both rounds. It links rather than repeats the 7.5 cm oud confound (4222), the 12 cm three-wick oud test (4276) and the heavy-single soot run (4242).

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (300 g at 10% = 30 g oil + 270 g wax; at 9% = 27 g + 273 g; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g); of-total to of-wax conversions use t/(100−t). The 9 cm outside, 0.35 cm wall, 300 g fill and 4.0/4.5 cm spacings are worked-example inputs; pool area = π r² on the inside radius; wick-to-wall = r − s/2. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, basis not stated, pour 80–90°C; Woody Oud 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame (about 2.5–5 cm), trim (about 5–6 mm) and session (about an hour per 2.5 cm) figures are commonly cited rules of thumb. The gates, carbon scale, tie-break and round-2 moves are editorial judgement. Round durations are planning estimates. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
