Quick answers — read this first
What are the five numbers in a soy candle formula? Wax grade and weight, fragrance load as a percentage of wax weight, wick size, pour temperature and cure days. Everything else — jar, dye, top-up, storage — hangs off those five. Write them on a card and a second person should be able to reproduce your candle exactly.

How should Indian weather change my formula? In four places. Summer trims the load and slows the cool-down; monsoon lengthens the cure and demands dry jars; the festive weeks fix your pour date — Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, so a 14-day cure plus dispatch means pouring by about mid-October; winter forces you to warm the jars before filling.

What load should a professional formula start at? 8% of wax weight — 16 g of oil on 200 g of wax — which is the starting point the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives. Then take the lower of the wax's ceiling (10% on CSI 464, 13% on Chunks and CSI 468) and the oil page's stated candle range, commonly 6–10%, as your ceiling.

How long does a soy candle need to cure in India? The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. The common standard for soy container candles is 14 to 21 days by fragrance family — closer to 21 for heavy woods, vanillas and ouds, and longer again through a humid monsoon.
The short answer
Lock five numbers, in this order: wax grade, load as a percentage of wax weight, wick, pour temperature, cure days. Change one per test round, never two.
Let the worst week choose the wax: a formula that survives a 41°C May afternoon and a monsoon week at 90% humidity will survive everything else India does to it.
Then prove it with twelve jars: three loads by two wick sizes, two jars each — about ₹1,853.54 of materials, and the formula is yours for good.

The five variables of a soy candle formula, the published figure that anchors each, and the Indian condition that moves it. Deliberately left out: dye, additives and jar choice, which are style decisions layered on top of a formula rather than part of it.
Straight answer
How do I choose the wax, fragrance load, wick, pouring temperature and cure time for a soy candle formula that works in Indian weather?
Choose them in that order, because each one constrains the next. Wax first, selected for the hardest week of your year rather than the easiest: read the stated fragrance ceiling, the published working temperatures and whether the grade is sold as single-pour. Load second, as a percentage of wax weight, set at the lower of the wax's ceiling and the oil page's stated candle range — many CSI oil pages give 6–10% of total wax weight for soy, so a 13% wax does not entitle you to 13% of a 10% oil. Start at 8%, which is 16 g on 200 g of wax, and trim a point in the hottest months if your candles bead. Wick third, sized to the jar's internal diameter and proved by measuring the melt pool at three hours, not by a chart: Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 in C1 and ₹9.44 in C2, and CSI does not publish a size-by-diameter table. Pour temperature fourth, inside the grade's published window and held to one figure all batch — 58–60°C for CSI 468, 75–80°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, and the CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Cure fifth, 14 to 21 days by fragrance family, extended through the monsoon and counted backwards from your delivery date. Four completed cards follow — one each for summer, monsoon, festive and winter — costing between ₹152.69 and ₹224.82 a candle in wax, oil and wick at 200 g. What a professional formula actually is — and why most makers do not have one

If the only copy of your recipe is in your head and it changes slightly every batch, you do not have a formula. You have a habit that has been lucky so far.

A formula is five numbers written down: wax grade and weight, fragrance load as a percentage of wax weight, wick size, pour temperature, cure days. The test of whether you have one is simple and uncomfortable — could you hand the card to somebody else, leave the workshop, and get your candle back. Most makers fail that test on at least two of the five, usually pour temperature and cure.

There is a reason the list is short. Those five are the variables that interact: change the wax and the pour temperature changes, change the load and the wick may need to change, change the season and the cure changes. Everything else — dye, jar, label, decoration, top-up technique — sits on top and can be varied without breaking the candle. A formula that tries to fix twenty things is never followed; a formula that fixes five is.

The Indian part is not decoration either. A soy formula tested once in a 24°C February and never revisited will behave differently when the workshop is at 36°C in May, when the air holds monsoon moisture in July, and when jars sit at 11°C in a Delhi January. The same five numbers, with three or four documented seasonal adjustments, is a professional formula. Five numbers with no seasonal adjustments is a February formula that fails for four months of the year.

Writing the recipe in percentages of the finished candle instead of the wax. CSI's pages state fragrance load as a percentage of total wax weight, and so does this page. If your notes say “10%” but you meant 10% of the finished 216 g candle, you poured 21.6 g of oil into 194.4 g of wax, which is 11.1% of the wax — over the stated 10% ceiling on CSI 464 without you ever intending to exceed it. Write the convention on the card: load = grams of oil ÷ grams of wax.

Step 1 · The wax: choose it for the worst week of your year

Every wax works in October. The question a formula answers is what happens in the third week of May.

Pick the grade against your hardest conditions, not your average ones, because a formula that only works in mild weather has to be rebuilt twice a year. In practice that means three questions: what ceiling do I need for the oils I actually pour, what pour window can I hold in a hot room, and can I buy this grade in the size I will need next year without switching.

Two honest cautions on heat. Melting points are published for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at 50–53°C; for the other container grades the melting point is not published, and if a summer line depends on it, ask CSI on WhatsApp for the figure rather than inferring it from a pour range. And no container soy will hold a perfect surface through a parcel that sits at 45°C in a stationary van and cools overnight. That is a packaging and routing problem, not a grade problem, and a supplier who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

The third question — pack ladder — is the one professionals care about most and hobbyists never ask. CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 all run 500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, so a formula proved on a 500 g trial scales to a 10 kg production bag without a grade change. Above 10 kg in one consignment, pricing is a WhatsApp conversation. A formula that is only valid on a pack size you outgrow is a formula with an expiry date.

ONE GRADE, NOT FOUR
The temptation once you have four season cards is to stock four waxes. Resist it for as long as you can. Every extra grade means another wick ladder, another pour temperature, another cure schedule and another slow-moving bag on the shelf. Most Indian makers are better served by one grade and a documented load and cure adjustment per season, moving to a second grade only when a specific product line genuinely needs it — a premium finish, or a ceiling above 10%.

Step 2 · The fragrance load: the lower of two ceilings, minus a hot-month margin

Two documents set your maximum, and the one most makers read is the wrong one.

Load is grams of fragrance oil divided by grams of wax. The wax page states a maximum the wax is formulated to hold; the oil page states a candle range the oil is meant to be used at. Where they differ, the lower figure governs — a 13% wax does not entitle you to 13% of an oil whose page stops at 10%. Many CSI oil pages state 6–10% of total wax weight for soy candles, including Citrus Lemon, Lavender, Woody Oud, Apple Cinnamon and Roasted Coffee; the Sandalwood page states up to 10% for soy.

Read the money row before you set the load. On Lavender, going from 8% to 13% adds ₹52.21 to every 200 g candle, which is ₹26,105.00 across a 500-candle season — real margin, spent on a difference your customer may not be able to name. Raise the load only after the wick and the cure are right, because both of those improve throw for almost nothing.

Then the Indian adjustment. In the hottest months, a load that sat comfortably in February can push oil out of the wax: beads on the surface, a wet film, a slick under the lid. That is the wax releasing oil it can no longer hold at 38°C, and the honest fix is a point off the load for those months — 8% becomes 7%, 10% becomes 9% — rather than a new wax. Document it on the card as a seasonal setting, not as a permanent change, and put it back in October (candle sweating).

Two oil properties belong on the formula card as well, because both are published and both change what you can promise. Vanillin: the Apple Cinnamon and Dark Vanilla pages note vanillin present, which can yellow white and pastel wax over time, while British Rose states 0% vanillin and a flashpoint of 192°C. Flashpoint: a transport and safety property, not the temperature at which fragrance burns off in wax — Roasted Coffee is stated at approximately 191–193°C and Sandalwood at 203°C, comfortably above the 80–90°C at which soy pages ask you to add oil.

Measuring oil by volume, or topping up “a bit more” at the pot. Fragrance oils differ in density, so a measuring beaker is an approximation while a scale is a fact. A Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00, though stock is low at present, and any 0.1 g kitchen scale does the job. An extra 2 g of oil on a 200 g candle moves an 8% formula to 9% — invisible at the pot, visible three weeks later as beading on twenty jars, and ₹181.25 of oil you did not plan to spend on a Woody Oud batch of twenty.

Step 3 · The wick: sized to the jar, proved by the pool

This is the cheapest variable in the formula and the one that moves hot throw most. It is also the one nobody can hand you as a chart.

CSI does not publish wick-size tables by candle diameter on the wick pages, and no honest supplier should invent one for you: pool behaviour depends on the wax, the load, the jar's glass thickness and the room. What the catalogue does give you is a small, clear ladder — Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each at the 100-pack, both cotton and paper fibre wicks made for natural waxes; Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 each, stated for large diameters above 8 cm and 10.16 cm tall; and Performance Wooden Wicks with tabs at ₹41.30 each in the 100-pack if you want crackle.

The sizing method is a measurement, not a lookup. Burn one jar for three hours and measure the melt pool diameter and depth. A pool that reaches the glass at around three hours, roughly 6–12 mm deep in common practice, with a steady flame and no soot, is the target. Short of the wall means size up; a deep, hot pool with a flickering flame, soot or a carbon ball on the wick tip means size down.

The table is the argument for testing wicks before anything else. Ten millimetres of missing pool in a 70 mm jar costs you roughly a quarter of the liquid surface that carries scent into the room, and you cannot buy that back with fragrance: raising an 8% load to 10% adds 25% more oil to a pool that is still too small, and on CSI 464 it also puts you at the page's stated maximum with nowhere left to go (wrong wick size).

One Indian note. A wick sized in a 22°C January room will run slightly differently in a 36°C May room, because the candle body starts warmer and the pool forms faster. It is rarely enough to change wick size, but it is enough to make a borderline C1 tunnel in winter and soot in summer. If your jar sits on the boundary between C1 and C2, choose the size that behaves in your hottest month and accept a marginally slower pool in January rather than the other way round.

Step 4 · The pour temperature: set by the room, not the calendar

The published window tells you where you may pour. Your room tells you where inside it you should.

Pour temperature decides surface finish, glass adhesion and — the part professionals care about — whether jar number one and jar number sixty match. The published windows are narrow enough to be useful: CSI 468 at 58–60°C, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 75–80°C after a fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of slow stirring, CSI 464 with 80–90°C given on the page as the working range for melting and pouring, and Eco Soy CSI 400 adding fragrance at 85°C and pouring directly.

Inside that window, the room decides. A hot, still workshop keeps the jar warm and slows the set, which flatters adhesion but risks a dip at the wick if you pour at the top of the range; a cold room pulls heat out fast, which risks early crystallisation, rough surfaces and lost contact with the glass. So the rule on the card is not a single number for the year — it is a number per season, with the jar temperature written next to it.

The equipment that makes this repeatable is modest. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 is the single most valuable purchase in this list, because every published window on every wax page is useless without one. A Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 holds temperature while you pour a run of jars instead of letting the pot cool between the first jar and the twentieth; the two together are ₹2,714.00. For production runs, the imported Electric Wax Melter is ₹21,240.00 in 10 kg capacity.

One process note that belongs to this step rather than the wax step: the fragrance addition. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for two full minutes of slow stirring at 80–90°C, and Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for two minutes of gentle stirring at 85°C. Two minutes is much longer than it feels. Stirring short is one of the commonest reasons a correctly weighed load behaves like an under-dosed one, and no amount of cure will rescue oil that was never properly bound in (add temperature for soy).

Pouring a batch as the pot cools. If jar one goes in at 82°C and jar twenty at 68°C, you have not poured one batch — you have poured twenty slightly different candles and you will never know which variable caused what. Either hold the melt at temperature or pour in small lots, re-checking before each lot. This is the whole reason a heated melter earns its price in a working studio, and why one CSI customer describes the melter as the thing that made the work manageable rather than a luxury.

Step 5 · The cure: 14 to 21 days, counted backwards from your delivery date

The only variable in the formula that improves your candle for free — and the first one every deadline eats.

Cure is the time between pouring and the candle being ready to judge or sell. Soy keeps changing during it: the wax finishes crystallising and the fragrance settles into it, and the hot throw you get at day three is not the hot throw you get at day eighteen. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Some oil pages give shorter figures — 48 to 72 hours for best throw is common — and both are true in their own terms: you can test-burn a candle after two or three days, but soy throw keeps developing after that, which is why 14 to 21 days is the standard most soy container makers settle on.

Three storage rules make the cure count. Lids off for the first 24 hours so the surface sets without trapped warmth, then lids on for the rest of the cure so the fragrance is not simply evaporating into your workshop. Keep cured stock away from sunlight and off hot walls — below about 30°C where you can manage it. And through the monsoon, store cartons sealed and raised off the floor, because soy candles cure perfectly well in humid air but cardboard, labels and jar exteriors do not (why your candle needs a 14-day cure).

Counted properly, the cure sets your pour date rather than the other way round. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Work back: a 14-day cure, a few days for burn-testing two jars from the batch, and packing and dispatch time means the festive batch wants to be poured by about mid-October. Miss that and the thing that gets shortened is always the cure, which is the one variable in this formula that cannot be bought back at any price (planning fragrance inventory before the festive season).

Each card below is a complete, internally consistent formula for a 200 g candle at CSI's September 2026 prices, using a different grade and a different oil so you can see the method applied four ways. They are illustrative starting points for a maker in that season, not prescriptions, and every one of them should be proved in your own jar before it becomes production. Costs are wax, oil and wick only — jars, dye, labels, packaging and your time sit on top. The spread across the four is ₹72.13 a candle.

Compare the four honestly and the lesson is not that summer is cheap and festive is dear. It is that the whole spread between the cheapest and the dearest card is ₹72.13 a candle, most of it fragrance rather than wax, while the difference between a cured and an uncured version of any of them is the entire reason a customer reorders. Spend your attention where the leverage is.

The twelve-jar test matrix that locks a formula

One wax, one oil, one jar, one room. Three loads by two wicks, two jars each. Three weeks later you have a formula instead of an opinion.

This is the experiment that converts four cards into your card. It varies exactly two things — load and wick — because those are the two that interact most and the two that cost least to change. Everything else is held fixed, including the pour temperature, which you write down before you start. Materials: 2.4 kg of CSI 464, 192 g of Citrus Lemon, six C1 wicks and six C2 wicks — about ₹1,853.54, plus twelve identical jars.

Write the fixed conditions down before you melt anything. Jar model and internal diameter, wax grade and weight per jar, oil and batch, pour temperature to the degree, room temperature and the date. Melt 2.4 kg of CSI 464 in batches, add Citrus Lemon by weight on a scale, stir slowly for two full minutes, and pour every jar of a load group in the same ten-minute period. Warm the jars first and cover the cooling tray.

Read the surfaces at 24 and 72 hours. Photograph all twelve from the same angle in the same daylight. Score surface, frosting and adhesion 0–3 each. This reading is about the pour temperature and the room, not about the load — if all twelve have rough tops, stop the experiment and fix the pour before you go further, because the throw scores will be meaningless.

Burn one jar of each pair at day 14 and the second at day 21. Three hours, closed room, fan off, nose rested between jars. At the three-hour mark measure pool diameter and depth, then score scent 0–3 at one, two and three hours, at arm's length and from across the room. That gives each of the six combinations a nine-point throw score at two cure ages — twelve readings in all.

Pick the cheapest combination that is not clearly beaten. A gap of two points or more, repeated at both cure ages, is a real difference; one point is noise. If 8% with a C2 wick scores within a point of 10% with a C2 wick, you have just saved ₹11.33 on every candle you ever pour — ₹5,664.00 across 500 — and you have proof rather than a hunch. Write the winner on a record sheet the same day, while you still remember the pour temperature.
Running the matrix with a different jar for each row because you ran out. Jar diameter changes the pool, glass thickness changes the heat, and a tapered jar changes both as the candle burns down. Twelve identical jars are not a luxury in this test — they are the experiment. If you only have eight of one model, run eight and repeat the missing rows later with the same model, rather than substituting. IF YOU ONLY RUN SIX JARS
Halve it honestly rather than cutting corners: keep the two wick sizes and drop the 6% row, giving 8% and 10% at C1 and C2, one jar each, burned at day 18. That is six jars and about ₹858.80 of materials. What you lose is the duplicate that tells you whether a difference was real — so treat a one-point gap as no gap at all, and re-run anything that surprises you.

The record sheet — and when a locked formula should change

Every professional workshop has one, and it is always the least glamorous piece of paper in the building.

A record sheet is one row per batch. Its job is to let you answer, six months later, why batch 41 smelled better than batch 47 — a question that is unanswerable from memory and trivial from a sheet. Keep it on paper by the melter or in a spreadsheet, but keep the same columns every time, because the value is entirely in the comparison.

Eighteen fields takes about ninety seconds a batch once the sheet is printed. In exchange, a customer complaint about one batch becomes a lookup rather than an investigation, a supplier conversation becomes specific, and a new person in the workshop can pour your candle correctly on their first day. That is the difference between a formula and a habit, and it is the whole reason this series ends here rather than with a product recommendation.

So when should a locked formula change? Four legitimate triggers, and one that is not. Change it when the wax grade changes, because the pour window and ceiling change with it; when the jar changes, because the pool changes; when the oil changes, because the stated candle range and the cure both change; and when the season changes, which is what the four cards above are for. The trigger that is not legitimate: one disappointing candle. Re-burn a second jar from the same batch, at the same cure age, in the same room, before you touch a single number.

Changing two numbers at once because a deadline is coming. It is the most understandable mistake in candle making and the most expensive: if the next batch is better, you cannot tell which change did it, so you carry both costs forever; if it is worse, you have two suspects and no time. One variable per round, always — and if the deadline genuinely does not allow a test round, pour the last formula you have a record of rather than an improvised one.

That is the series. If you have followed it from the start, you have chosen a grade, argued with your temperatures, fixed your frosting and your wet spots, survived a summer and costed a thousand candles. The five numbers on your card are the result. What is a good starting fragrance load for a soy candle formula?
8% of wax weight — 16 g of oil on 200 g of wax — which is the starting point the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives before its 10% recommendation and 13% maximum. Your ceiling is the lower of the wax's stated maximum and the oil page's candle range, which on many CSI oils is 6–10% of total wax weight. Raise the load only after the wick and the cure are right.
What pouring temperature should I use for soy wax in India?
Whatever your grade publishes, held to one figure for the whole batch, and positioned inside that window by your room. CSI 468 states 58–60°C; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states 75–80°C; the CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. In a 12°C January room warm the jars and sit in the upper half; in a 38°C May room sit in the lower half.
How do I choose between C1 and C2 wicks without a sizing chart?
By burning both. CSI does not publish a wick size table by candle diameter, so the only honest method is a three-hour test burn in your actual jar: the pool should reach the glass at around three hours without a deep, hot, sooting flame. How long should soy candles cure before I sell them in India?
14 to 21 days as general practice for soy container candles, weighted by fragrance family — citrus at the short end, woods, ouds and vanillas at the long end — and extended a few days through a humid monsoon. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Test-burning early is fine; judging an oil early is not.
Should I change my formula for summer, or change my wax?
Change the formula first, because it is reversible and free. A point off the load — 8% to 7%, which on Citrus Lemon is ₹39.65 of oil instead of ₹45.31 on a 200 g candle — plus cooler storage and slower cooling, solves most summer beading. Change the grade only if the reduced load and better storage still leave you with oil on the surface, and then test the new grade properly rather than switching mid-season.
Do I need an additive like Vybar in a professional soy formula?
No, and this page would rather you did not start there. The Vybar Additive page gives 0.5–2% of wax weight, with the lower end for soy, added to melted wax before fragrance and colour, and claims improved fragrance retention and a smoother surface. Treat it as an optional controlled experiment after your five numbers are locked — never as a substitute for a correct pour temperature or a full cure. Eco Soy CSI 400 is sold as needing no additives at all.
