Why a May festival changes everything

Most Indian candle businesses build their festive calendar around Diwali, Christmas and wedding season, and every one of those falls in cool or moderate weather. The scent brief for all three is broadly the same: warmth, resin, spice, sandalwood, amber, vanilla. Mother's Day is the outlier. It sits at the second Sunday of May, which in most of India means daytime temperatures in the high thirties and, across the north and centre, routinely past 40°C. A candle designed to smell like a warm room is being lit — or more often, simply opened — in a room the customer is trying to cool down.

This has two consequences and both are commercial. The first is perceptual: heavy notes read as heavier in heat. Ouds, tobacco, cinnamon and dense bakery gourmands feel oppressive in summer even at a modest fragrance load, and a gift that feels oppressive does not get re-lit or reordered. The scents that work are the ones that read cool — jasmine and mogra with their green-white freshness, tuberose, rose, neroli, cucumber and green tea, melon, pear and light stone fruit. Cool is not the same as weak: Raat Ki Rani is an extremely powerful oil. It is simply powerful in a direction that suits the season.

The second consequence is physical, and it is the one nobody plans for. Soy wax is soft at ordinary Indian room temperature and gets appreciably softer as the ambient climbs. A parcel in a delivery van, a sorting hub roof, or a locked lobby cupboard in Nagpur in the second week of May is not sitting at ambient — it is sitting well above it. The candle rarely turns into a liquid, which is why makers dismiss the risk. What it does is soften just enough to dent under packing pressure, slump on one side, lose its surface gloss, pull away from the glass wall, or push a bead of fragrance oil to the surface. The candle still burns perfectly. It just no longer looks like a gift.

The Indian floral trio — the strongest positioning you have

There are dozens of pretty florals in any fragrance catalogue, and most Mother's Day candle ranges in India are built from the imported ones — cherry blossom, English rose, freesia, peony. They sell. But they sell as decoration, and they compete with every other brand doing exactly the same thing at the same price. Mogra, Rajnigandha and Raat Ki Rani do something no imported floral can do: they are recognised.

An Indian mother in her fifties has a specific relationship with these three flowers. Mogra is the gajra bought outside a temple and pinned into hair; rajnigandha is the flower that arrives in the house for a puja or a wedding; raat ki rani is the plant near a window that announces itself after dark in a way no daytime flower does. That is not a marketing story you have to construct — it is memory the customer brings with her. A candle that smells like her own house at a particular time of year is a categorically different gift from a candle that smells expensive.

The full Mother's Day shortlist, with prices

How to read that table commercially. The top of it is where your margin lives: British Rose at ₹49.10 of fragrance per candle is the cheapest gift-appropriate floral CSI stocks, and it is a perfectly good entry product at ₹599. The middle is where the range gets its character — Rajnigandha, Gardenia, Jasmine. The bottom is your premium tier, and you should only be there if the packaging and price point justify it. A sensible Mother's Day range is three scents, not nine: one recognisably Indian, one classic imported floral, one light green or fruit. Add a fourth only if you are also building a gift set.

What a Mother's Day candle actually costs to pour

A 200g candle at an 8% fragrance load is 184g of wax and 16g of oil, plus a wick and a vessel. The non-fragrance part is fixed at ₹163.30: 184g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹110.20 (₹5,999 per 10kg, ₹0.60/g), one Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 at ₹5.90 (₹590 per 100), and an Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹47.20 (₹236 per pack of 5). Everything else is the oil you chose.

The ₹42 packing line is the part specific to May, and it is worth itemising because most makers absorb it without noticing: a corrugated candle box at ₹22.42 (₹1,121 per 50), roughly 15g of crinkle paper filler at about ₹9 (₹300 per 500g), one sheet of packing tissue at ₹6.50, a length of craft paper tape at roughly ₹4 and a candle care sticker at ₹0.70. Against a ₹699 retail price that is 6% of revenue spent on the parcel arriving intact, which is materially cheaper than one replacement candle plus return shipping.

Shipping soy wax through a 40°C May

This is the section that no other festive candle guide needs, and the one that decides whether a Mother's Day range is profitable. Soy is a soft wax by design — that softness is exactly why it releases fragrance well at a low melt-pool temperature — and it does not need to reach its melting point to cause you a problem. It only needs to warm enough to become plastic under its own weight and under the pressure of packaging.

The five failure modes, in the order they actually occur: a dented or fingerprinted top where packing material pressed into softened wax; a slumped surface where a jar travelled on its side; loss of surface gloss, leaving a dull or mottled top; wet spots, where wax contracts away from the glass after a heat cycle and leaves patches that look like damage but are cosmetic; and fragrance sweating, where oil beads on the surface — most likely when the load has been pushed near the wax's ceiling. Only the first two are genuinely irreversible. The rest resolve, or become invisible, after one full burn.

Formats that do not melt

The most under-used answer to the May heat problem is to sell something other than a candle, in the same fragrance, at the same counter. Two formats work, and they solve different halves of the problem.

A room spray is a liquid in a sealed bottle. Heat does not deform it, packing pressure does not dent it, and it ships in a fraction of the volume of a jar candle. It is the only home fragrance format in this guide that is entirely unbothered by an Indian May. Build it from the Room & Linen Spray Base at ₹999 per 500g and a 50ml room spray bottle with golden spray at ₹42. At a 12% fragrance loading — check the base's own guidance and adjust — a 50g fill is 44g of base at about ₹87.90 plus 6g of oil: roughly ₹148 in materials with British Rose, or ₹172 with Raat Ki Rani. Everything else you need sits in room and spray base accessories.

Wax sachets are wickless scented wax tablets hung in a wardrobe, a car or a drawer. They are not immune to heat — they are wax — but they fail gracefully in a way a poured candle cannot, because there is no gloss surface, no melt pool and no glass to separate from. Wax compatibility, order sizes and the 2027 calendar

Every oil in this guide is a candle fragrance oil and works across the CSI soy range. What changes between waxes is the maximum fragrance load, and the load is what sets your throw — and, in this season, your risk of sweating. Do not treat a single number as universal: work to the ceiling stated on the wax you actually bought.
