Quick answers — read this first
Can I put perfume oil in a candle? If the bottle is a perfume-grade fragrance oil whose page states a candle load, yes — pour it at that stated percentage and burn test it. On CSI's perfume-grade listings that line reads "Candles (Soy / Paraffin / Blends) 10%" with a recommended start at 7%.

Can I put actual perfume — an EDP or an attar — in a candle? No, and not because of a rule: because of arithmetic. A finished perfume is mostly carrier. To get the 16 g of fragrance a 200 g candle needs at 8%, you would have to add 80 g of a 20% eau de parfum — 40% of the candle's weight, against a wax that holds 10–13%.

What must I check before I try? Five lines: the applications list, the stated candle percentage, the solubility line, the discolouration note and the flash-point statement — then ask CSI for the SDS on WhatsApp.

How do I test it cheaply? A 10 g cup test costs ₹13.86 and tells you within a day whether the oil stays in solution. Six 70 g votives across three loads cost ₹1,099.60 in packs and tell you whether the candle is worth selling.
The short answer

Every percentage here is a rate CSI's own perfume-grade pages publish for that format — extrait 25%, EDP/EDT 20%, solid perfume 15%, reed diffusers 25%, room sprays 5%. One question, one chart: how much of this bottle would you tip into 200 g of wax to reach a normal load? Only the first bar fits inside the dashed line, which is why "perfume oil" can be a candle material and "perfume" cannot.
Straight answer
Can perfume oil be used in candles, and how do I know whether mine can?
Yes for one of the two things people mean by "perfume oil", and no for the other. A perfume-grade fragrance oil — a concentrate sold to be diluted into a base — is a legitimate candle material when its page states a candle application and a candle percentage. On the 32 CSI listings that carry the perfume-grade specification block, three lines do that work: "Solubility Oil-soluble", a usage row reading "Candles (Soy / Paraffin / Blends) 10%", and on 25 of them "Recommended load - candles 7-10% (start at 7%)". Pour at 7%, obey whichever ceiling is lower — the oil's or your wax's, which is up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% on CSI 464 — and then burn test, because a stated application is a specification and not a performance promise. A finished perfume is a different object: an extrait, EDP, attar, mist or room spray is a small amount of fragrance in a large amount of carrier chosen for skin or for air. At the rates CSI's own pages publish for those formats you would need 64 g of extrait, 80 g of EDP or 320 g of room spray to deliver the 16 g of fragrance a 200 g candle carries at 8% — against a wax that will hold 20 g at 10% and 26 g at 13%. There is no load at which that works, so the honest answer is to buy the concentrate instead — CSI's perfume-grade oils start at ₹183 for 50 g. One line: a perfume-grade concentrate with a stated candle percentage is a candidate; a bottle of finished perfume is carrier you would have to pour by the tablespoon, and the wax will not take it.

Which bottle are you actually holding?

Three very different liquids share the words "perfume oil", and the question only has an answer once you know which one is on your bench.

The phrase is used loosely by shops, makers and customers alike, and that is the whole reason this question keeps coming up. A concentrate is a raw material. A finished perfume is a product. An attar bought by the tola may be either, and usually arrives with nothing written down. Sort your bottle into one of these three rows first.

Row one is the interesting case, and commoner than makers realise: CSI's Fine Perfume Fragrances collection exists because one concentrate can serve a perfumer at 20% in alcohol and a candle maker at 8% in soy. The difference is a percentage and a base, not a grade. Where the two categories diverge is in what the page tells you — laid out in candle fragrance oil vs perfume oil. This page picks up after that decision: what do you check, and how do you test?

The mistake behind most of these questions: "it smells stronger, so it will throw stronger." A concentrate smells overwhelming from the bottle because you are sniffing it undiluted at 100%. In a candle it is 7–10% of the wax and has to survive a melt pool — a different test entirely, and cold-bottle intensity predicts almost nothing about it. The pre-flight check, two minutes per oil. Every line below is something a CSI perfume-grade page actually publishes, quoted as it appears. Copy the wording into your recipe card with the date you read it — pages get updated, and your batch record should say which version you worked from.

Line five needs its own sentence, because it appears on every perfume-grade listing and is the most misread item in the catalogue. "> 93°C" is a threshold, not a measurement. It says the oil sits above a line that matters in alcohol; it does not say whether the real figure is 94°C or 200°C, and it must never be converted into one. The contrast that makes this concrete: Palo Santo Fragrance Oil, a candle-led page, states "Flashpoint: 93°C" as a measured value — same number, entirely different status. Request the SDS figure rather than inferring one, and take your add temperature from the wax page: 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, pour 70–80°C. What IFRA is, and what the page actually says about it
IFRA is the International Fragrance Association, the industry body that publishes usage standards for fragrance materials by product category. An IFRA document for a specific blend states the maximum levels at which that blend may be used in each category — a conformity statement about a formula, not a quality award and not a permission slip for candles. CSI's perfume-grade pages publish their own maximum-usage table with the footnote "* Rates are maximum recommended percentages by weight. IFRA compliant within these limits." Read that twice: the limits are the table, and compliance is claimed within them. No page publishes a certificate number, amendment, category or assessment date, so nothing here asserts what any document contains — ask CSI for the IFRA documentation and the SDS for your oil on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926. Note the "by weight" in that footnote. Loads are weight percentages and oils differ in density, so a measuring jug will not give you a repeatable candle. This series treats load as a share of the finished candle — 200 g at 8% is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil — while several CSI pages phrase theirs as a share of total wax weight; pick one convention, write it on the card, never mix them. Why a finished perfume cannot reach a candle load

This is the part nobody costs, and costing it ends the debate. Take the rates CSI's own perfume-grade pages publish — extrait 25%, EDP/EDT 20%, solid perfume 15%, room spray 5% — and ask how much of each format delivers the 16 g of fragrance a 200 g candle carries at 8%.

Worked out above: grams needed = 16 g ÷ the stated fragrance share of that format. Extrait at 25% → 16 ÷ 0.25 = 64 g; EDP at 20% → 80 g; solid perfume at 15% → 106.67 g; room spray at 5% → 320 g. The wax ceilings are the wax pages' stated maximums applied to a 200 g candle: 10% = 20 g on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 13% = 26 g on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. Those are formulation limits set by the wax, not regulatory limits.

Read the third column as a sentence: every finished format busts the wax's ceiling before it delivers a normal load, and the gentler the format is on skin, the worse it is in wax. You could add less, of course — tip in 10 g of a 20% eau de parfum and you have delivered 2 g of fragrance, a 1% load — and that candle smells of nothing once the top notes have gone, at retail perfume prices.

And the carrier is not neutral. The other 80% of an eau de parfum exists to carry fragrance onto skin and evaporate off it — the opposite of what a candle needs from the material holding its oil. Alcohol does not belong in a wax formulation; treat any alcohol-based product by its own label and keep it away from the melting pot. The practical route is the boring one: buy the concentrate, and if you love a perfume you already own, shortlist on note structure instead — CSI states a pyramid on 102 of its 107 fragrance pages, which is how perfume-inspired fragrance oils are chosen.

One exception runs the other way. If you make solid perfumes, room sprays or reed diffusers alongside candles, a perfume-grade oil is one purchase serving several products — 15% in a balm base, 5% in a spray, up to 25% in a diffuser base, 7–10% in wax. The ₹13.86 cup test, then six votives

Two tests in sequence. The first costs less than a cup of chai and kills bad candidates in a day; the second costs about eleven hundred rupees and tells you whether to launch.

A stated candle percentage tells you the supplier expects the oil to work in wax. It does not tell you that your wax will hold it at your load, or that the jar will still look right after a fortnight. Those are physical questions, cheap to answer in the right order: solubility first, performance second.

Read the cup at 1 hour, 24 hours and day 7One question: does the oil stay in the wax? Note whether the set surface is even or filmed with oil, whether liquid has pooled at the bottom of the cup, whether the wax is curdled or grainy rather than uniform, and whether the colour has shifted against a control cup of plain wax. Pick the load that wins, not the load that is highestThe winner is often not 10%. If 8.5% scores level with 10% on hot throw, the extra 1.5% is money burnt — on a ₹8,469 per kilo oil that is 3 g, or ₹25.41 per candle and ₹2,541 per hundred. Three details decide whether the test is worth running. Weigh, do not measure. Change one variable — alter the load and the wick together and a better candle teaches you nothing repeatable. And keep a control: one jar of the same wax and wick with an oil you already trust, so a bad score tells you about the new oil rather than about your afternoon. Useful for the opposite reason: its page is candid about a problem. Alongside "Recommended load - candles 7-10% (start at 7%)" and "Candles 7-10% in soy, paraffin, or blended wax", its discolouration block reads "Tobacco Vanilla contains vanilla and tonka, which will cause browning in white or light-coloured wax, soap, and cream bases over time. This is natural and expected with vanilla-heavy fragrance oils." That is a line that should change a product decision rather than surprise you three weeks after a wedding order: design it into amber, bronze or dark vessels and the browning stops being a defect. The instructive edge case. Its specification block carries "Solubility Oil-soluble" and the usage row "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%", and a formulator tip reading "In candles, start at 7% and adjust based on wax blend and wick size" — but no candle usage-guide paragraph of the kind Sparkling Fruit carries. Enough to treat it as a candidate; not enough to skip the cup test. Stated notes are saffron, bergamot and cinnamon over oud, rose and patchouli, with amber, sandalwood, tonka bean and musk underneath — a heavy base, which is the profile most likely to hold through a long burn. It is also the dearest oil here: at ₹11,640 per kilo, 7% of a 200 g candle is ₹162.96 of fragrance.

A naming point that matters commercially: some perfume-grade listings are designer- or retailer-inspired directions, and CSI's own pages state that such an oil "is not affiliated with or identical to the original fragrance". The CSI principle
A stated application is permission to test. It is not evidence, and it is certainly not a result.
The page tells you the supplier formulated the oil for wax and at what percentage. The candle tells you whether that percentage works in your wax, your wick and your jar, on day fourteen, in a room of a particular size. Only one of those two sources has burned anything.

What to record, and what to ask for

A maker who tests a perfume oil once and cannot reproduce the result has learned nothing durable. The fix is one page per scent, filled in at the bench, plus two documents requested by message — the difference between a candle you sold once and a product you can reorder into.

The same goes for shelf life and storage, which no page in the range states: keep oils closed, cool and out of sunlight as ordinary good practice, and print no date you cannot source.

Can I pour my bottle of perfume into a candle?
No — not because of a rule, but because the numbers do not reach. A finished perfume is mostly carrier: at the rates CSI's own pages state, delivering the 16 g of fragrance a 200 g candle holds at 8% would take 64 g of extrait, 80 g of eau de parfum or 320 g of room spray, against a wax that holds 20 g at 10% and 26 g at 13%. Add a splash instead and you are at a fraction of a percent — nothing after the first hour. Buy the concentrate and match the note structure.
How much perfume-grade oil should I use in a soy candle?
Start at the figure the page gives you: on CSI's perfume-grade listings, "Recommended load - candles 7-10% (start at 7%)" with a maximum-usage row of 10% for soy, paraffin and blends. Then apply the lower of two ceilings — the oil's and your wax's: up to 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8–13%, 10% recommended), up to 10% on CSI 464. On a 200 g candle, 7% is 14 g of oil with 186 g of wax; 10% is 20 g with 180 g. Weigh it.
The page does not mention candles. Can I still try the oil?
You can test it, but treat it as unproven and do not put it into saleable stock until it has passed. Five of CSI's 32 perfume-grade listings publish the usage table — including the candle row — without a candle paragraph in the body text. The sequence is the 10 g cup test at 10%, two votives at 7% if the cup stays clean, then a 14-day cure and a blind burn. Ask for the SDS and IFRA documentation in the same message. If a page mentions no candle use at all, the honest description is "untested in wax".
Is perfume oil safe to burn in a candle?
Candle suitability is not something a blog can certify for your product. It comes from three things: the supplier's stated applications and percentages for that oil, the documentation you request and keep on file — CSI supplies SDS and IFRA documentation via WhatsApp — and your own burn test in the wax, wick and vessel you sell. Stay inside the stated load, never exceed your wax's ceiling, cure fully, and burn a finished sample yourself before a customer does.
Does "flash point > 93°C" mean the oil is safe for candles?
No. It is a threshold relevant to alcohol-based products, printed on every CSI perfume-grade listing, and it says only that the oil sits above that line — not what the figure is, and nothing about wax. Compare Palo Santo, whose page states a measured "Flashpoint: 93°C": same number, but one is a measurement and one is a floor. Take your add temperature from the wax page — 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, pour 70–80°C — and request the SDS figure for the oil's own number.
Will a perfume oil throw better than a candle fragrance oil?
There is no reason to expect it to, and nothing on the pages promises it. In a candle both classes of oil live at 7–10%, and perceived strength comes mostly from the melt pool, the cure and the wax rather than the bottle. Finding out costs ₹1,099.60: pour two votives of each at the same load, wax and wick, cure them together for 14 days, score them blind at 30 and 180 minutes. The difference usually turns out to be the note structure, not the grade.
