Complex Fragrance Oils for Premium Scented Candles
Share
Which CSI oils are built from several notes? By title, twelve in-stock oils name two or more notes, from Coffee Vanilla Tobacco and Lavender Cranberry Coconut (three each) to Dark Vanilla Oud and Saffron Cedarwood. Read each product page for the full notes.
Can I blend two fragrance oils for a candle? Yes, that is common practice, but test every blend as a new oil. A 70/30 blend of Dark Vanilla Oud and Neroli Signature Grade costs ₹6.26 a gram at 1 kg rates. Check both oils' IFRA certificates. See layering.
Is a more complex oil always better for a premium candle? No. Complexity that turns muddy at full pool is worse than a clean single note. We have not published throw or complexity measurements for any oil, so score it in your own burn.
What complexity means in a candle
In perfumery, complexity is usually described in layers: top notes that you smell first and that fade quickly, heart notes that form the body of the scent, and base notes that last longest. A candle shows those layers differently from skin. Heat, the size of the melt pool and the air in the room all change which notes reach you and when. The cold candle, the first half hour, the full pool and the minutes after the flame goes out can smell noticeably different. That is where complexity shows, or does not.
Two things are easily confused with complexity. Strength is how much scent reaches you. A loud single note is strong but not complex. Sweetness can make a candle feel rich on first sniff, but a sugary gourmand often smells the same at minute five and minute ninety. When premium buyers say a candle smells "cheap", they often mean flat: it opened well and then had nothing more to say. How to choose oils that smell expensive deals with the wider question. This page is about the layered structure itself.
Oils built from several notes
The quickest way to shortlist for complexity is to look for oils whose titles name more than one material. A title is not a full note breakdown. Read each product page for that, and ask CSI on WhatsApp if a page does not list one. But it tells you the oil was built around several ideas rather than one. Twelve in-stock oils name two or more notes. Here they are, dearest first, with each oil's per-gram price at its largest in-stock size:
| Oil | Notes named in the title | ₹/g (largest in-stock size) | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Vanilla Tobacco | coffee · vanilla · tobacco | ₹8.60 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Vanilla Orange Blossom | vanilla · orange blossom | ₹8.29 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Lavender Cranberry Coconut | lavender · cranberry · coconut | ₹8.00 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon | jasmine · coconut · 'spa' | ₹8.00 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Smoked Rose Royale | smoke · rose | ₹8.00 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | sandalwood · 'ember' | ₹8.00 (500 g) | Premium |
| Saffron Cedarwood | saffron · cedarwood | ₹6.87 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Sage and Cedarwood | sage · cedarwood | ₹6.87 (1 kg) | Premium |
| Dark Vanilla Oud | vanilla · oud | ₹5.69 (1 kg) | Mid-tier |
| Bergamot Amber | bergamot · amber | ₹5.44 (1 kg) | Mid-tier |
| Mahogany Shea | mahogany · shea | ₹4.89 (1 kg) | Mid-tier |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | cinnamon · vanilla | ₹4.55 (1 kg) | Mid-tier |
Four of the twelve sit below the premium line, and that is worth noticing. Dark Vanilla Oud, Bergamot Amber, Mahogany Shea and Cinnamon Vanilla are mid-tier by price but still name two notes each. Lemongrass and Lime names two notes as well but is left off the table as a simple citrus pairing. A premium candle can be built on a mid-tier multi-note oil if it scores well in your burn. Names in quotation marks, such as "spa" and "ember", describe a mood rather than a material. Treat them as a hint about style, not as a note list.
Sacred Sandal Ember shows why the stock line matters. On the pull date its 100 g and 1 kg are out of stock, and only the 500 g (₹3,999.00) can be bought. That is a big first purchase for a test. Ask on WhatsApp whether the 100 g is due back before you commit. Single-note premium oils such as Midnight Bakhoor Royale or Santal Noir can still be complex in a burn. The title just does not tell you so, and you find out in testing.

Scoring complexity through a burn
Here is a scoring sheet for comparing candidates on complexity. Use one sheet per candle. Pour every candidate in the same build (same wax, wick, jar and load), cure them all for the same time, and code them so the person scoring does not know which oil is which. Soy and coconut-soy candles are commonly cured for one to two weeks before a fair judgement.
| Stage | What to ask | Score | How to keep it fair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold (cured, unlit) | How many distinct notes can you name? Is anything harsh or flat? | 1–5 | Lid off, 10 cm away, same person each time |
| First 30 minutes | Which note arrives first? Does it fill the space near the candle? | 1–5 | Pool still forming; note the opening only |
| At full melt pool | Do the other named notes appear? Is it balanced or is one note shouting? | 1–5 | Most candles need 1–3 hours to reach full pool |
| Across the room, 2 hours | Is it still recognisably the same scent at the far wall? | 1–5 | Door closed, same room for every candle |
| After extinguishing | Does it smell pleasant or smoky/burnt as the pool cools? | 1–5 | Trim wick next time if smoky |
| Overall complexity | Did the scent change in an interesting way, or just fade? | 1–5 | The score that separates premium from flat |
Add the scores, but read the pattern too. A candle that scores 5 cold and 2 at full pool is front-loaded: it sells on the shelf and disappoints at home. A candle that scores 3 cold and 5 at full pool is a slow starter that customers often come to love. For a premium range, the overall complexity score and the full-pool score matter most. Keep the sheets. When you reorder an oil, a new reference candle scored on the same sheet shows whether anything has changed.
Layering two oils into an accord
Combining two catalogue oils is general candle-making practice, and it is one of the few ways to make a scent that is partly your own. It needs care. The blend is a new fragrance, so test it as one: fixed build, full cure, blind burn, five-stage score. Oils can interact in ways neither shows alone, including discolouring or behaving differently in the wax. Check each oil's IFRA certificate before you set the blend's load, and ask CSI on WhatsApp how to apply two certificates to a blend. Do not assume the higher of two figures applies.
Costing a blend is simple arithmetic. Its per-gram price is the weighted average of the two oils' per-gram prices at the sizes you buy. The table uses 1 kg rates, except for Saffron Cedarwood, which is costed at its cheaper 500 g rate. Each blend's candle cost uses the signature build (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹110.22, a Cotton Braided wick ₹12.00 and a White Matte Glass Jar ₹70.80):
| Blend | Idea | ₹/g of each oil | Blend ₹/g | Oil per candle | Material cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70% Dark Vanilla Oud + 30% Neroli Signature Grade | Warm base, bright lift | ₹5.69 / ₹7.60 | ₹6.26 | ₹100.21 | ₹293.23 |
| 50% Smoked Rose Royale + 50% Midnight Bakhoor Royale | Rose deepened with resin | ₹8.00 / ₹8.00 | ₹8.00 | ₹127.98 | ₹321.00 |
| 80% Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) + 20% Bergamot Amber | Earth with a citrus edge | ₹8.96 / ₹5.44 | ₹8.26 | ₹132.09 | ₹325.11 |
| 75% Lavender Cranberry Coconut + 25% Saffron Cedarwood | Fruit-herbal over spice-wood | ₹8.00 / ₹5.17 | ₹7.29 | ₹116.66 | ₹309.68 |
Blending can also be a cost tool. Pairing a mid-tier base like Dark Vanilla Oud with a smaller share of a premium lift like Neroli Signature Grade gives a blend at ₹6.26 a gram, below Neroli Signature Grade alone at ₹7.60. If your customers score the blend as more complex than either oil alone, you have a better candle for less. If they cannot tell it from the base oil, you have added supply risk for nothing, because both oils now have to stay in stock.
| A / B ratio | Oil A | Oil B | Wax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 / 0 | 8.0 g | 0.0 g | 92 g |
| 85 / 15 | 6.8 g | 1.2 g | 92 g |
| 70 / 30 | 5.6 g | 2.4 g | 92 g |
| 0 / 100 | 0.0 g | 8.0 g | 92 g |
| Total | 20.4 g | 11.6 g | 368 g |
The grid uses 20.4 g of Dark Vanilla Oud and 11.6 g of Neroli Signature Grade, so one 50 g and one 15 g cover it, ₹453.00 in all. The two single-oil candles are your controls. Without them you cannot tell whether the blend adds anything. Weigh the oil on a scale that reads to 0.1 g. At these quantities the 15% share is only 1.2 g, so a 1 g error nearly doubles it. If a blend wins, re-pour it in your full 200 g build before scaling, because a 100 g test pot and a 200 g jar do not burn the same way.
What complexity costs per candle
Complexity does not have to mean the dearest oil. In the signature build, a candle with Dark Vanilla Oud costs ₹284.08 in materials, one with Lavender Cranberry Coconut ₹321.00, and one with Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹330.60. The blends in the table fall between ₹293.23 and ₹325.11. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. What moves a premium candle's cost much more than complexity is the wax and vessel. The luxury hub shows a Coconut Wax build adding more than the gap between two premium oils.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The convenient advice for us would be that complexity means our dearest oils, or two of them. This page shows mid-tier oils that name several notes, and it tells you to sell a single oil when it scores as well as a blend.
Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026, including the stock status of each size. Non-price figures and assumptions: Multi-note status is read from oil titles, not from published note data. Blend per-gram = weighted average of the oils' listed per-gram prices. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹110.22, a Cotton Braided wick ₹12.00 and a White Matte Glass Jar ₹70.80, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. The 100 g test pours are illustrative. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. No ceiling is quoted in this series for Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, Coconut Wax or Soy Butter Wax, so 6–10% is used only as a labelled test range for those waxes. Burn stages, curing times and blending practice are general candle-making practice. No throw or complexity measurements are published for any oil. Prices and availability change, and the linked product pages are always authoritative.
