Does Flash Point Affect Candle Hot Throw?

Does a low flash point mean the scent burns off in the candle? No. Flash point is an ignition threshold measured on neat oil, not an evaporation limit for oil dissolved in wax. Fragrance loss in a candle is driven by how hot the wax is held and for how long, not by crossing one number.
What actually decides hot throw? Four things you can change: load within the lower of the wax and oil ceilings, the melt pool your wick produces, the wax itself, and cure. A pool 50 mm wide in a 70 mm jar exposes 19.6 cm² instead of 38.5 cm² — about half the evaporating surface, at any load.
So why do suppliers print flash point at all? Because it is a transport, storage and handling figure that belongs on a safety data sheet and on a courier's paperwork. It is useful, and it is not a performance specification. Ask for it in writing on WhatsApp, then choose your oil by burning it.
Where the idea comes from, and why it sounds right
Nobody invents a rule like this out of nothing. The flash-point-equals-throw idea is stitched together from three statements that are each half true, and hearing them in sequence makes the conclusion feel earned. It is worth taking them apart one at a time, because if you only hear "that is a myth" you will quietly go on believing the mechanism.
Story one: "fragrance burns off above its flash point, so a high flash point protects the scent"
The true part is that fragrance does leave hot wax, and that holding a melt hot for a long time before pouring costs you scent. The false part is the cliff. Flash point marks the temperature at which the vapour above a liquid becomes briefly ignitable; it does not mark a temperature at which a molecule decides to leave. Evaporation is continuous and gradual, it happens at 50°C and at 90°C, and what governs how much you lose is time at temperature, not whether you crossed a line. If a single threshold governed scent loss, two oils with figures 8°C apart would behave completely differently at 90°C and identically at 80°C. They do not.
Story two: "a low flash point means a volatile oil, and volatile oils vanish"
This one is closest to a real mechanism, and it is dealt with properly further down. In short: the flash point of a blend is set by whichever materials in it evaporate most readily, so a low figure genuinely does tell you that something in the bottle is light. But "something light is present" is a long way from "this candle will smell weaker", because the light fraction may be a small part of the blend, light materials are exactly what makes a scent noticeable on first sniff, and the heavy materials that carry a candle through hour three are not represented in the number at all.
Story three: the comparison table on the product page
Several fragrance oil pages, CSI's included, run a comparison block that lists flash point disclosure as a point in the supplier's favour — and it genuinely is one, because a supplier who publishes a figure is a supplier who has the sheet. But a reader skimming a column of ticks absorbs "flash point disclosed" as though it were "flash point good", and from there it is one short step to "higher must be better". Disclosure is a fact about the supplier's documentation. The number itself is not a score.
The evidence: CSI's own pages, sorted by flash point
This is the cleanest test available to a maker, and it costs nothing. Take every CSI oil page that publishes a numeric flash point, sort them by that figure, and put next to each the throw description the same page gives. Same supplier, same house style, same commercial motive to describe every oil favourably. If flash point ordered throw even loosely, the strong descriptions would bunch at one end.

Read the second and third columns together. The pages claiming the most emphatic throw — excellent, exceptional, strong in both cold and hot — are at 132°C, 132°C, 143°C, 185°C, 193°C and 200°C. The pages claiming a moderate to strong throw are at 85°C, 93°C, 98°C, 190°C, 192°C, 193°C, 199°C, 203°C, 203°C and 206°C. The two groups are not separated. They are shuffled together, and one figure — 193°C — carries a page from each group.
Now widen the frame. Sixteen pages publish a number; 57 of the 92 do not. Among the oils with no published figure is Lavender Fragrance Oil, which carries more customer reviews than any other oil on the store, several of them about hot throw specifically. A reputation for throw has been built on that oil entirely without the number existing. Whatever buyers are responding to, it is not a flash point.
What actually moves hot throw, and what each move costs
The useful test for any candle-making variable is simple: can you change it, by how much, and what does the change cost per candle. Run the four real levers through that test and the comparison with flash point makes itself. All figures below are on the series unit — 200 g of wax, oil at the load under discussion, an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, with British Rose at 1 kg pricing as the reference oil.

That last row is the point of the table. The other four are dials. Flash point is a label. You cannot buy a version of Jasmine with a different flash point and see what happens, because changing it means changing the blend — at which point you have changed the fragrance, the price, the vanillin content and everything else along with it. A variable you cannot isolate is a variable you cannot credit with a result.
It is worth noticing how cheap the real levers are. Four extra grams of oil is ₹12.27 a candle. A thicker wick is ₹3.54. Waiting another twelve days is free. Against that, choosing Neroli at ₹6.66/g over British Rose at ₹3.07/g because of a number on a page adds ₹57.40 to every 200 g candle at 8% — ₹5,739.52 across a hundred-candle festive run, before you have improved anything measurable.
The one real link — and why it still does not help you
Here is the genuine physics, stated as plainly as it deserves. A fragrance oil is a blend of tens of materials with widely different volatilities. The vapour standing above the blend is dominated by whichever of those materials evaporate most readily, so the flash point of the bottle is effectively set by its lightest, most volatile fraction. Volatility also matters inside a candle: the materials that leave a warm melt pool fastest are, broadly, the same light ones. So the two quantities are connected — through composition, at one remove.
Follow the connection to its conclusion, though, and it does not deliver the rule. A blend with a very volatile top fraction reads low on the flash test and also announces itself quickly in a room, which is a strong first impression rather than a weak one. A blend built on heavy woods, resins and vanillin-carrying materials reads high and releases slowly, which is why a page like Vetiver asks for a full cure before you assess it and describes a throw that builds steadily. If you insisted on drawing a rule from the mechanism, it would be "low flash point means faster, brighter, shorter" — closer to the opposite of the common claim, and still far too crude to buy on.
There is a second reason the thread snaps. The flash point can be governed by a material present at a fraction of a per cent — a light solvent or a bright top note — that contributes very little of what you actually smell three hours into a burn. Two blends can share a flash point and differ completely in the heavy materials that do the work in hour three, and two blends built on identical heavy materials can differ by a hundred degrees because one carries a citrus opening. The number is real. The inference is not.
How to settle it on your own bench in one round
Nobody should take this on trust, least of all from a supplier who sells every oil in the table. The round below takes four jars, one wax, one wick and one load, and it costs ₹1,658.40 in materials before jars. It will not tell you that flash point causes nothing — no four-jar test can. It will tell you whether the published figures predict what your own nose reports, which is the only version of the question that affects a purchase.
What the number is genuinely for
Flash point earns its place in three places, none of which is a fragrance comparison. In transport, it is the criterion by which liquids are sorted for carriage, and some carriers ask for a safety data sheet before accepting a consignment of oils. In storage and handling, it tells you which bottles deserve a little more care near a hot bench, which on CSI's published list means three of sixteen. In documentation, it is one of the lines a corporate buyer's onboarding form asks a candle brand to fill in, along with GST details and an IFRA statement.
So the right response to a published flash point is to write it down, not to rank by it. One line per oil on your spec sheet — name, pack, rate per gram, stated candle range, stated flash point, vanillin where published, date the sheet was issued — and the figure has done its whole job. For any oil whose page does not print one, ask CSI for the sheet on WhatsApp rather than inferring anything from the silence.
Why this myth costs Indian makers real money
The commonest version here is the summer version: the belief that a high flash point oil will hold up better through an Indian summer. It conflates two unrelated things. A store room in Ahmedabad or Nagpur at 42°C in May is more than forty degrees below the lowest published figure in the whole catalogue, so flash point is simply not the thing being tested on that shelf. What degrades oils in Indian conditions is heat over months, sunlight, and air in a half-empty bottle — and those affect a 206°C oil and an 85°C oil alike.
The second version costs money directly. Choosing an oil on the strength of its published figure rather than a burn test is how a maker ends up paying ₹6.66/g instead of ₹3.07/g for no measurable gain: ₹57.40 more per 200 g candle, ₹5,739.52 across a hundred-candle run. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, which means festive stock should be poured by about mid-October to allow a 14–21 day cure plus transit — and a hundred candles is exactly the scale at which ₹57.40 per unit stops being a rounding error and starts being the difference between a healthy margin and a thin one.
The third version is a sales version, and it is worth naming because CSI benefits from it. A supplier — any supplier — can put a high flash point in front of a hesitant buyer as though it were evidence of quality, because it is a number and numbers feel like proof. If you are ever offered one that way, the useful reply is to ask for the same oil in a 50 gm pack and burn it against whatever you already sell. That is a ₹212.40 to ₹342.20 question, answered in a fortnight, and no specification sheet can argue with the result.
