How to Choose Candle Raw Materials That Work Together Instead of Testing Randomly
Share
What does "work together" mean in practice? Six interfaces agree on paper: pour temperature against the jar's hot-pour limit, the lower of two load ceilings, vanillin against vessel colour, the wick family against vessel width, heavy oils against wick size, and stock depth at the sizes you will buy.
Is there a ready-made CSI combination? Yes, four. Clear 150 g jar + CSI 464 + Eco C1/C2 + oils up to 10% with low stated vanillin; black 150 g jar + CSI 468 + Eco C1/C2 + vanilla gourmands; tins + Eco Soy CSI 400 + Eco wicks; pillars + Soy Pillar Wax + cotton braided wicks.
What does the first check cost? A six-candle fit check for system 1 costs ₹2,037.80; for system 2, ₹2,357.20. Either one proves the parts agree before you order in bulk.
Four decisions, in order
In our judgement, many makers who feel they are testing randomly chose the oil first, because the oil is the exciting part, then picked a wax that was in stock, a wick that came with a kit, and a jar that looked good. Each part may be fine. The joins between them were never checked, so every failed candle has four possible causes and the next test changes two of them at once. Reverse the order and each choice removes most of the options for the next.
1. Format: the vessel or mould, and what it states
Decide what the customer holds: a 150 g jar, a tin, a pillar, a large multi-wick jar. Then read what its page states, because those figures become constraints. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) page gives "outer diameter 7cm", "150g fill capacity" and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C". The Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 gram) gives the same 7 cm and 85°C, with a 6.5 cm base. The tin containers listing sells "85 gram" and "135 gram" packs of 12 while its description talks about 100 g and 200 g tins; confirm the fill weight on WhatsApp before you calculate a load. Browse the jars collection with this question in mind: what does the page state that my wax and wick must respect?
2. Wax: made for that format, with stated figures
Containers need a container wax; pillars need a wax sold for pillars. Soy Pillar Wax is "Specially made for Pillar and Designer Candles"; CSI 464, CSI 468, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Eco Soy CSI 400 are sold for containers. Among container waxes, prefer one whose page states figures you can plan with: CSI 464 states a 10% ceiling and a pour temperature of 80°C–90°C; CSI 468 states 13% and a pour temperature of 58°C–60°C; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states 13% but no temperatures; Eco Soy CSI 400 states an add temperature ("add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes") but no ceiling. How these soy waxes differ with the same oil is covered in Why Does the Same Fragrance Oil Perform Differently in Different Soy Waxes?.
3. Wick family: set by vessel width and wax
The family comes before the size. For 150 g jars around 7 cm across and small tins, Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) are the natural family, and Eco Soy CSI 400's page names them directly ("Recommended Wick Eco Wicks"). For vessels over 8 cm, the Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page says they are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", and Eco Braided Wicks are described as for "large diameter container jars". Performance Wooden Wicks (₹59.00 each in a pack of 10) are a style choice with their own burn; treat them as a separate system, not a swap. The size within the family is never read from a page: it comes from a bracket test in your vessel with your wax. See the candle wicks collection.
4. Oil: last, filtered by everything above
Only now open the fragrance collection, with three filters. The load filter: the oil page's stated candle load must reach into your chosen load, and the lower of the wax and oil ceilings governs. The colour filter: oils whose pages state vanillin (Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Vanilla at 2.5%, Dark Vanilla "Vanillin present") belong in dark or tinted vessels or tinted wax; oils stating 0% or 0.2% suit clear jars better, though the page figure is still only a claim. The weight filter: dense gourmand, resinous and vanilla-rich oils often need a wick step up, so a heavy oil in the smaller wick of a bracket is a known risk. The list of CSI oils that suit soy on stated basis is in Which Fragrance Oils Work Best With Soy Wax?.
The six interfaces where materials fight
Each row below is a join between two materials, the figure on each page that decides it, and the rule that makes them agree. Check all six on paper before the first pour; it takes ten minutes and costs nothing.
| Join | What the pages state | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| Wax ↔ vessel (temperature) | CSI 464 pour 80°C–90°C; CSI 468 pour 58°C–60°C; both 150 g glass jars "hot pour up to 85°C" | Pour inside both figures: 80°C to 85°C for CSI 464 in these jars; CSI 468 has room to spare |
| Wax ↔ format | Soy Pillar Wax "for Pillar and Designer Candles"; CSI 464 and 468 "For Container Candles" | Container wax in containers, pillar wax in moulds; do not swap to fix a scent problem |
| Wax ↔ oil (load) | CSI 464 up to 10%; CSI 468 and Chunks up to 13%; oil pages from "6-9%" to "6-13%" | The lower ceiling governs; test 6%, 8% and 10% inside it; the maximum is rarely the best load |
| Oil ↔ vessel (colour) | Cinnamon Vanilla "Vanillin content 2.5%"; Gardenia "Vanillin content 0.2%"; Eucalyptus Spearmint "No vanillin" | Vanillin-rich oils in dark or tinted glass or tinted wax; low-vanillin oils for clear jars and white wax; check anyway |
| Wick ↔ vessel (width) | Clear and black 150 g jars about 7 cm outer; Cotton Braided "exceeding 8 cm" | Eco C1/C2 family for these jars; braided family for wide vessels; size from a bracket |
| Wick ↔ oil (weight) | Heavy notes on oil pages: vanilla, caramel, amber, tonka, oud | Heavier oils often want the larger wick in the bracket; test, do not assume; re-bracket when you change oil (see How to Choose a Wick After Changing Fragrance Oil) |
A seventh check is commercial rather than technical: can you keep buying the parts? Check stock at the sizes you will use and the price per gram at those sizes. On 25 September 2026, every size of CSI 464, CSI 468, Gardenia, Cinnamon Vanilla and Eco wicks is in stock; the black jar is in stock but carries a stale delivery note in its title; Stearic Acid is listed but out of stock at both sizes, so do not design a pillar formula around it without asking.
Four CSI systems whose parts already agree
| System | Vessel | Wax | Wick family | Oils that fit | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Everyday clear jar | Clear 150 g jar, ₹94.40 each (pack of 10) | CSI 464, ₹507.40/kg, 10% | Eco C1/C2 | Stated soy load reaching 10% or below it; low or 0% stated vanillin; e.g. Gardenia | Pour at 80°C–85°C only: the jar's limit cuts the top off the wax's range |
| 2 · Gourmand in dark glass | Black 150 g jar, ₹107.00 each | CSI 468, 13%, pour 58°C–60°C | Eco C1/C2, often C2 for heavy oils | Vanillin-rich gourmands; e.g. Cinnamon Vanilla (up to 13% on its page) | Black jar title still says "Deliveries Starting 5th Dec" and its description says "Premium clear glass": confirm dispatch and glass |
| 3 · First candles in tins | Tin containers, ₹70.80 or ₹96.76 each (packs of 12) | Eco Soy CSI 400, ₹399.00/kg | Eco wicks (named on the wax page) | Oils with a stated soy load; work inside the oil page's maximum | Wax states no ceiling; tin listing and description disagree on fill weight |
| 4 · Pillars | Your pillar mould | Soy Pillar Wax, ₹600.00/kg | Cotton Braided (page: over 8 cm) | Oils with a stated candle load; test 6%, 8%, 10% | No ceiling or temperatures stated on the wax page; ask before you design the formula |
Why these four. Each one pairs a vessel with a wax whose temperature fits the vessel's stated limit, a wick family that fits the vessel's width (or, for Eco Soy CSI 400, the wick its own page names), and an oil rule derived from the wax ceiling and the vessel's colour. Of the four, systems 1 and 2 have the most stated figures and are where we would start a jar range. Systems 3 and 4 have more gaps on their pages; they work, but you will be setting figures by test rather than reading them. None of the four is a throw ranking: CSI has no measured throw data for any wax, wick or oil.
Running two systems. Systems 1 and 2 share a wick family and a jar size but not a wax or a temperature. That is fine for a maker with two lines, as long as each has its own process card. It is a likely source of "random" results when the cards are merged: a CSI 468 batch poured at a CSI 464 temperature, or a 13% oil load copied into a 10% wax. Per-oil load policy across a range is in Should Every Fragrance in My Candle Collection Use the Same Fragrance Load?.
When a mismatch looks like a weak oil
Before you blame an oil in a new line, check whether the candle is actually a mismatched system. Each pattern below is easy to mistake for a weak or faulty fragrance; none of them is fixed by buying another oil. The logic is simple: if the oil is being asked to work outside a join its pages state, the oil has not been tested yet.
| What you see | Join that failed | Cheaper fix |
|---|---|---|
| Weak throw, oily surface, a 13% oil in CSI 464 | Wax ↔ oil load: 13% is above CSI 464's stated 10% | Re-pour at 8% and 10%; the lower ceiling governs |
| Weak throw, pool stops well short of the glass | Wick ↔ vessel: bracket not run, or wick family too small | C1/C2 bracket (₹153.40); braided family if the vessel is over 8 cm |
| Weak throw only in the vanilla scent, small flame | Wick ↔ oil weight | Rebracket that scent only; it often wants the larger wick |
| Clear-jar candle turned yellow or brown in a week on the shelf | Oil ↔ vessel colour: a vanillin-rich oil in clear glass | Move the scent to system 2's dark jar, or choose a low-vanillin oil for clear glass |
| Wet spots, rough top, weak throw, new wax | Wax ↔ vessel temperature: poured outside the page figures | Pour to the wax page's figure, within the jar's hot-pour limit; log it with a thermometer |
| Pillar sags or burns strangely | Wax ↔ format: container wax in a mould | Soy Pillar Wax and a braided wick; not a new oil |
The six-candle fit check
The fit check is deliberately small: one oil, one wax, one vessel, three loads and two wicks, 150 g each. It is not a launch test (sizing a whole range is in How Many Wax × Fragrance Combinations Should I Test Before Launching?) and not a full testing sequence; the step-by-step order for makers who have already wasted money on random combinations is the deep guide I'm Wasting Money Testing Random Wax, Wick and Fragrance Combinations — What Order Should I Test Raw Materials In?. It answers one question: do these parts work together at a sensible load and wick?
Worked example of what a passing system costs in production, per 150 g candle at 8% with oil at the 1 kg price and wax at the 10 kg price: system 1 (Gardenia, CSI 464, clear jar, C1) ₹222.31; system 2 (Cinnamon Vanilla, CSI 468, black jar, C2) ₹259.00, ₹36.70 more. Both exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
What to buy for systems 1 and 2
The parts for the two jar systems with the most stated figures, in system order. Oils are chosen because their stated load, vanillin and notes fit their system's wax and vessel, and because every size is in stock on 25 September 2026, not on throw, which CSI has not measured. Wax "what it covers" assumes 150 g candles at 8% (138 g of wax); oil candle counts assume 12 g per candle.

Diwali gifting: which system is ready
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 44 days after these prices were checked. System 1 is fully in stock and can run its six-candle fit check by mid-October, leaving time for a cured production batch. System 2 depends on the black jar, whose title still says "Deliveries Starting 5th Dec"; if you want dark-glass gourmands for Diwali gifting, confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before you commit, and have system 1 ready as the fallback. Corporate and wedding orders are where a written system card earns its keep: the tenth batch should match the first.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every material in these four systems, and does not sell finished candles. This page asks you to rule out most oils on paper before buying any, and to fix a wick or a temperature before you replace a fragrance; a maker whose first system works comes back for the second.
Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size in the pick cards is in stock on that date. We flag what the pages get wrong or leave open: the black jar's stale delivery note and lid and glass wording, the tin listing's conflicting fill weights, and the waxes that state no ceiling.
The four systems, the interface rules and the fit-check design are editorial judgement built on stated page figures; CSI has no measured throw, colour or burn data for any combination. Non-price figures: candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (6% = 9 g, 8% = 12 g, 10% = 15 g oil); wax "what it covers" is floor(grams ÷ 138). Ceilings, temperatures, vessel dimensions, hot-pour limits, vanillin figures and wick notes are quoted from CSI product pages; ceilings are formulation limits, not regulatory limits. The melt-pool benchmark is a commonly cited rule of thumb. The systems, interface rules, mismatch table and fit-check design are editorial judgement. Costs are worked examples excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.
