I Have ₹10,000 to Start a Candle Business — How Should I Divide It Between Soy Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks, Jars and Testing Materials?
Share
How many candles does it make? 60 finished 85 g candles — 6 test tins and 54 for sale. The 60 tins are the scarcest line; wax would fill 62 and the oils 63.
Why not more fragrances? Because containers, not oils, set the count. More oils on ₹10,000 means idle oil. Test extra scents with 15 g bottles instead.
What do I buy only after testing? The production wick pack: Eco Thin C1 50 (₹295.00) or Thick C2 50 (₹472.00), whichever passes the six-tin test. Wax, oils and tins are shared, so buy them now.
The ₹10,000 split, line by line
A first budget has three jobs, in this order: buy the few tools you cannot weigh and pour without, prove one candle works before you make sixty of it, and only then turn the rest into saleable inventory — keeping some cash back for the reorder you will need once you know what moves. The table is that order written as a CSI basket. Every price is a listed, in-stock pack, the lines add up exactly to ₹10,000, and the last line is not spent: it is a labelled reserve you hold as cash.
| Group | CSI item | Buy | ₹ | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tools | Candle Making Weighing Scale + Pen Thermometer + Pouring Jug | 1 each | ₹1,239.00 | 12.4% |
| Testing | Wick Centering Device | 1 × pack of 5 | ₹118.00 | 1.2% |
| Testing | Eco Thin C1 test wicks | 1 × 20-pack | ₹118.00 | 1.2% |
| Testing | Eco Thick C2 comparison wicks | 1 × 10-pack | ₹94.40 | 0.9% |
| Wax | Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 × 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | 25.4% |
| Fragrance | British Rose | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹554.60 | 5.5% |
| Fragrance | Citrus Lemon | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹470.00 | 4.7% |
| Fragrance | Jasmine | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹660.00 | 6.6% |
| Containers | Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill | 5 × pack of 12 | ₹1,800.00 | 18.0% |
| Wicks | Eco Thin C1 production wicks (after the test) | 1 × 50-pack | ₹295.00 | 2.9% |
| Wicks | Wick stickers | 2 × sheet of 40 | ₹200.00 | 2.0% |
| Reserve | Testing & reorder reserve (cash, not spent) | Held back — first reorder, a wick swap or a retest | ₹1,914.00 | 19.1% |
| Total | CSI spend ₹8,086.00 + reserve ₹1,914.00 | ₹10,000.00 | 100.0% |
Grouped, the money falls like this: tools ₹1,239.00 (12.4%), testing materials ₹330.40 (3.3%), wax ₹2,537.00 (25.4%), fragrance ₹1,684.60 (16.8%), containers ₹1,800.00 (18.0%), production wicks and stickers ₹495.00 (5.0%) and the reserve ₹1,914.00 (19.1%). Notice that the tins cost more than the wax. That is normal for small candles, and it is the first thing most ₹10,000 plans get wrong: they budget wax by the kilo, oils by the bottle and treat the container as an afterthought, then discover the container is what they run out of.
The example uses three oils from near the top of CSI's best-selling sort — British Rose (position 2), Citrus Lemon (position 7) and Jasmine (position 10). That position is the order the collection sorts in, not a promise about what will sell for you; swap in any three oils you prefer and re-price them from the pick cards below. The structure of the budget does not change when the oils do — only the fragrance line moves by a few hundred rupees.
Why the money falls in that order
Tools once. A weighing scale, a pen thermometer and a pouring jug cost ₹1,239.00 together and last far longer than the first budget. Without the scale, none of the numbers below can be reproduced — fragrance load is a weight, not a guess. If you already own them, that ₹1,239.00 moves straight into the reserve or into a sixth tin pack; the already-own-jars version shows how the split shifts when a big line is already paid for.
A test before depth. CSI publishes no wick size for any container diameter, so the wick is the one material you cannot choose on paper. The plan buys a small pack of Eco Thin C1 and a small pack of Eco Thick C2, pours one tin of each oil on each, and only buys the production wick pack once one of them passes. Wax, tins and oil are shared by both options, so they can be bought now; the production wick waits. That split is the cheapest insurance in the whole budget.
The scarcest component decides the count. An inventory makes as many candles as its scarcest line allows. Five packs of tins are 60 tins; 5 kg of wax would fill 62; 150 g of each oil would scent 21 each, 63 in all. The tins bind at 60, and everything else has been bought to land just above that line, never far above it — money sitting in an oil you cannot pour into anything is money you do not have.
A reserve you do not spend on day one. ₹1,914.00 is 19.1% of the budget. It is there because a first launch usually produces at least one surprise: the Thick wick wins and the production pack costs ₹177.00 more, one oil sells out in a week, or a test fails and needs repeating. A budget with no reserve turns any of those into a stalled launch.
The bill of materials behind the basket
The Golden Aluminium Tin is the only CSI container with a published fill weight that suits a candle this size — 85 g — which is why it anchors a ₹10,000 plan: you do not have to guess the fill before you can budget. CSI's convention puts the fragrance load on the finished candle, so at a working 8% each tin holds 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. CSI 464's page states a fragrance ceiling of 10%, so 8% leaves two points of headroom inside the wax maker's stated maximum. The allowance stack is applied in a fixed order and never twice.
| Step | Wax | Oil (per fragrance) | Tins | Wicks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per candle | 78.2 g | 6.8 g | 1 | 1 + 1 sticker |
| 1 · Candles of material (incl. 6 test tins) | 4,692.0 g | 20 × 6.8 g = 136.0 g | 60 | 60 |
| 2 · Reject allowance | Not bought extra — rejects come out of the 60 (5% example) | Same | Same | Same |
| 3 · Pour loss 3% (wax and oil only) | 4,832.8 g | 140.08 g | — | — |
| 4 · Glass breakage | — | — | None: tins are aluminium | — |
| 5 · Round up to in-stock CSI packs | 1 × 5 kg = 5,000 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g = 150 g | 5 × pack of 12 | 20 Thin + 10 Thick (test) · 50 Thin (production) |
| Leftover after the pour | 167.2 g (₹84.86) | 9.92 g each | 0 | 20 wicks |
Two choices in that table are deliberate. First, the reject allowance is not bought on top here: with the tins as the binding line and a ₹10,000 ceiling, buying a sixth tin pack for rejects would cost ₹360.00 and push the oils short. Instead the plan expects about 5% rejects (an example rate — replace it with yours) out of the 54 non-test candles, which leaves roughly 51 you can sell. Second, oil is rounded as 100 g + 50 g, not one 500 g bottle: on the listed catalogue, 50 g and 100 g are usually the same price per gram, while 15 g carries the premium, so 150 g as two bottles costs exactly what it should and leaves under 10 g idle per oil.
How many finished candles ₹10,000 makes
This is the number the title is really asking about. Count what each line of the basket can fill, take the smallest, and that is your launch.
| Component | Bought | Per candle | Candles it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 1 × 5 kg CSI 464 | 80.55 g incl. loss | 62 |
| British Rose | 150 g | 7.00 g incl. loss | 21 |
| Citrus Lemon | 150 g | 7.00 g incl. loss | 21 |
| Jasmine | 150 g | 7.00 g incl. loss | 21 |
| Golden Aluminium Tins | 60 tins | 1 | 60 ← scarcest |
| Eco wicks | 70 Thin + 10 Thick | 1 | 80 (only one type goes into production) |
| Wick stickers | 80 | 1 | 80 |
| Finished candles | 60 = 6 test + 54 for sale |
Sixty finished 85 g candles, 5.10 kg of candle in all. Six are your test tins — you burn them, you do not sell them. Of the 54 production candles, a 5% reject rate (example) would leave about 51 saleable. At this load and these pack prices the material in one tin costs between ₹99.39 and ₹108.00 depending on the oil — wax ₹39.68, wick and sticker ₹8.40, tin ₹30.00 — before labour, packaging, freight or GST. The five-fragrance ₹50,000 post runs the same capacity count at a bigger scale, where it gets more interesting because each oil binds separately.
The testing materials, and the test they pay for
The testing line is small — ₹330.40 — because it only has to answer one question that paper cannot: which of two Eco wicks gives this tin a full, safe melt pool with your three oils. Wax, oil and tins for the six test candles come out of the production inventory, so the test does not need its own wax bag.
CSI publishes no flame-height or tin-temperature limit, and no wick-per-diameter chart, so the standard for passing is your own: no worse than a candle you trust, within your container supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to. A bigger flame is never traded for more throw.
The priced shopping list: buy now, buy after the test
Split the basket into two orders. The first contains everything shared by both wick options; the second contains only what the test decides. Non-CSI lines are shown as examples you replace with your own quotes and are kept out of the CSI subtotal.

The same ₹10,000 in 200 g jars
Many first plans assume a 200 g glass jar. Here is the same structure — same tools, same test, same wax and oils — rebuilt around the White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 each. CSI does not publish this jar's fill weight, so the 200 g below is an illustrative fill; weigh a test pour before you budget on it.
| 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin | 200 g White Matte Glass Jar | |
|---|---|---|
| Container cost each | ₹30.00 | ₹70.80 |
| Containers bought | 60 (5 × pack of 12) | 25 (2 × pack of 10 + 1 × pack of 5) |
| Wax bought | 1 × 5 kg | 1 × 5 kg |
| Oil bought (three oils) | 450 g | 450 g |
| CSI spend | ₹8,086.00 | ₹7,779.00 |
| Reserve left | ₹1,914.00 | ₹2,221.00 |
| Finished candles | 60 | 25 |
| Finished candle weight | 5.10 kg | 5.00 kg |
| CSI spend per finished candle | ₹134.77 | ₹311.16 |
The surprise is in the weight row: both baskets make about the same kilograms of candle, because the wax bag is the same. What changes is the count — 60 small candles against 25 larger ones — and the cost per piece. Which is right is a selling decision, not a materials one, and only you know your price points. If you are still deciding, the tin plan gives you more candles to put in front of people and more feedback per rupee; the ₹30,000 jar-size post shows when a second size starts to make sense, and standardising on one jar and one wax explains why one container is the right number to start with.
What changes at ₹20,000, ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh
The four rules hold at every budget; the proportions move. Tools stay a fixed rupee amount, so their share shrinks. The test stays small but widens to more oils and a second wick size. The reserve stays — at larger budgets it becomes a reorder fund for whatever sells first. And from about ₹25,000 the price breaks in the catalogue start to matter: Natural Soy Pearl drops from ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kilo at 5 kg, and the 200 ml Salsa jar falls from ₹40.12 each in a 5-pack to ₹29.50 in a 50-pack.

This page is the hub of the budget shopping-list cluster. The posts after the ₹1 lakh questions deal with standardising and with what you already own: one jar and one wax, how much complexity standardising removes, a collection that looks large on ₹20,000, ₹10,000 when you already own jars, 100 jars and wicks already in hand, wax already in hand for 200 candles, oils already in hand, the smallest pilot before ₹1 lakh, when to move to wholesale quantities and the ₹10,000 → ₹1 lakh growth plan.

| A fixed number of candles (100 × 200 g and similar) | 100 lavender candles in 8 cm jars |
| A large confirmed order (500–1,000 pieces) | 500 wedding candles in two fragrances |
| One exact candle you want to develop | a 200 g luxury lavender candle in frosted glass |
| A formula that already works, and monthly sales | a 30-day purchase order from a finished formula |
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier writing a budget guide has an obvious interest in a bigger basket. This one tells you not to buy our 1 kg oils or 10 kg wax bags at ₹10,000, keeps a fifth of the budget as cash, and buys the production wick only after a test you run yourself.
Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Tins and wicks were re-checked 4 October 2026. Tools: scale and thermometer verified 10 September 2026 (Blog 760); pouring jug pulled 24–25 September 2026. Every allocation adds up to the rupee; splits, pack rounding, leftovers and candle counts are arithmetic shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 8% load, 3% pour loss, six test tins, 5% example reject rate, 7-day cure checkpoint, 3–4 hour burn cycles and the size of the reserve are labelled working assumptions, not standards. The 200 g White Matte fill is illustrative; only the tin's 85 g fill is published. Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). The Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g fill is published; the 200 g White Matte fill is illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — up to 10%, shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. The 8% load, 3% pour loss, six test candles, 5% example reject rate, cure checkpoint and burn cycle are labelled working assumptions. Best-selling positions are the collection's sort order as pulled, not sales data. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart, throw data or numeric safety limits. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
