CSI Wick Lab · Commercial Wick Matrix
Twenty fragrances in five jars is a hundred cells, but rarely a hundred different candles. Group the oils, bracket the edges of each group, and verify every member on its group's wick before it goes on sale.

Quick answers — read this first
Five jar diameters and 20 fragrances: do I need 100 separate wick formulations? Not for initial testing. Sort the 20 oils into a few behaviour groups, bracket two edge oils per group in every jar, and verify everyone else on their group's wick. You still end with an approved wick for every oil in every jar you sell; you just don't bracket all 100 from scratch.

Where does the saving come from? The fragrance axis. Five diameters a centimetre apart differ by 26%–41% in pool area per step, so they stay separate. Twenty oils often behave like three groups.

How much does it save? In our worked example: 440 candles and 116,000 g of candle before grouping; 284 candles and 71,100 g after, including verification and six failed cells. That is 35% fewer candles and about ₹39,969.90 less oil, wax and wicks.

What is the rule I can't skip? Every grouped cell is verified before sale: two candles of that oil, on its group's wick, burned to about 1 cm left, in every jar you will sell it in. A group is a test plan, not an approval.
The short answer
The collapse: 100 formulations become 15 group-by-jar systems for initial tests: five jars × three provisional groups (light, middle, heavy) from page families and notes.
Stage A: two edge oils per group through the full 11-cell bracket: 132 candles. Stage B: the other 14 oils, two candles each on the group wick in five jars: 140. Stage C: failures get the neighbouring arm.
The numbers: 440 → 284 candles; 116,000 g → 71,100 g; oil, wax and wicks ₹105,773.32 → ₹65,803.42 (excluding jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST).
The honest limit: verification is nearly half of what's left; grouping removes bracketing, not testing. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, and no group is approved until each member has passed.

The twenty oils of the worked example against five jars, with each column as wide as the grams in one candle for that jar, so the 10 cm column shows how much of the wax and oil it takes. Six edge oils (black) carry the bracketing; fourteen (grey) are verified on their group's wick; the six outlined cells are illustrative failures that get a neighbouring arm. Below, the totals before and after grouping, each pair of bars on its own scale.
Straight answer
I have five jar diameters and 20 fragrances. Do I really need 100 separate wick formulations, or can I intelligently group similar candle systems for initial testing?
You need 100 approved cells in the end, one for each oil in each jar you sell, but you don't need to bracket 100 from scratch. Keep the five diameters as five columns, because a centimetre of diameter changes the pool area by a quarter to two-fifths. Group the twenty oils instead, provisionally, by what their pages state: light (citrus, herbal, aquatic), middle (florals and woods with amber or musk) and heavy (vanilla, coffee, oud, spice). In each group, pick the two members that look most different, the edges, and run each through the full bracket in every jar. The other fourteen oils go straight onto their group's chosen wick in each jar, two candles each, burned to about 1 cm left. Any that fail get the neighbouring arm. In our worked example that is 284 candles instead of 440, and every cell on sale has still passed its own full-life test.
One line: bracket the edges of each group, verify the middle on the group's wick, and sell nothing that hasn't burned to the bottom in its own jar.
The bulk lines grouping decides: CSI 464 10 kg (₹5,074.00; seven bags after grouping, not eleven) and Eco C2 100 (₹944.00), the rung the worked example uses most. Oils: 500 g only for the six edges; 100 g for the rest.
CSI 464 10 kg — ₹5,074.00

Why 100 formulations is the wrong unit of work

One hundred formulations sounds like a spreadsheet. In candles it is 440 jars and 116,000 g of wax and oil.

Take the five-jar matrix from the wick-matrix hub: eleven bracket cells across 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 cm jars, two candles a cell, at worked-example fills of 100, 150, 200, 250 and 500 g. One oil through it is 22 candles and 5,800 g of candle. Run all twenty oils through it and you pour 440 candles, 116,000 g: 9,280 g of oil and 106,720 g of wax, plus 240 C1, 200 C2 and 120 Cotton Braided wicks and 440 jars. Before a single candle is sold.

Most of that work repeats itself. If Lavender, Lemongrass and Lime, and Verbena all burn cleanly on C1 in a 7 cm jar, the fourth light herbal is unlikely to need a three-arm bracket to find out it does too. It still needs to be tested, because "unlikely" isn't "won't". The question is whether it needs to be bracketed. That difference is the whole of this page.

Mistake: the opposite shortcut, one house wick per jar for all twenty oils and no further testing. Why it fails: heavier, vanillin-rich and resinous oils are commonly linked to more carbon and a need for a different wick; a wick chosen on Lavender can sit a rung low for Dark Vanilla in the same jar. Fix: group, but test each group's edges properly and verify every member. Do I need different wicks for every scent? covers the first-level version of the question.

Collapse the fragrance axis, not the jar axis

Diameters a centimetre apart are different candles. Twenty fragrances are often three kinds of candle.

Grouping diameters looks tempting and rarely pays. On a 0.35 cm wall (our assumption), each step from 6 to 10 cm adds 41%, 34%, 29% and 26% to the pool area, and the bracket itself changes from small singles to pairs. Two jars belong in one column only when their inside diameters are within a few millimetres: a 3.3 mm difference around 7 cm already moves the pool area by about 10%. How close is close enough is the one-wick-across-jars post. With five sizes a centimetre apart, the five columns stay.

The fragrance axis is where the collapse happens. Oils share behaviour more often than jars share geometry, and CSI's pages give you enough to make a first guess: the stated family, the stated notes (especially the base), any vanillin line, and the stated load range. The groups below are provisional, a sorting for test planning, not a claim about how any oil burns. How to score pages for likely outliers in more detail is the paper pre-screen post.

How the groups were drawn. Light: citrus, herbal and aquatic families with nothing heavier than a soft musk, cedar or driftwood base. Middle: florals and herbal woods whose bases add amber, sandalwood or creaminess; Bergamot Amber sits here, not with the citrus, because its page lists "warm amber" and a "smooth vanilla base". Heavy: vanilla, coffee, oud and spiced gourmands, including the three with a vanillin statement. All twenty state a candle load or range; two state a maximum above CSI 464's 10% (Japanese Cherry Blossom "6-13%", Cinnamon Vanilla "Up to 13%"), and on CSI 464 the lower ceiling governs. The matrix runs every oil at 8%.

Edges, not averages
A group is tested at its edges because the group wick has to work for its most demanding member and its least. In each group, pick the two oils that look furthest apart on the page: here Lavender and Citrus Lemon (light), British Rose and Bergamot Amber (middle), Dark Vanilla and Woody Oud (heavy). If both edges land on the same wick in a jar, the members between them have a good chance of landing there too, and verification tells you which don't.

Stage A: two edge oils per group, every jar

Each of the six edge oils goes through the full matrix: the bracket for every jar (6–7 cm C1 v C2; 8 cm C2 v Cotton Braided; 9 cm Cotton Braided v 2 × C1; 10 cm Cotton Braided v 2 × C1 v 2 × C2), two candles per cell, screened at burn 3 and carried to full life. That is 132 candles, 34,800 g of candle and 464 g of each edge oil, which a 500 g bottle covers with 36 g to spare.

The output of stage A is a group wick for each jar: the arm both edges passed on. Three outcomes per group and jar:

Stage A · reading the two edges in one jar (judgement, labelled)
Each edge has already been read against the band rule from the matrix hub · "passes" = both candles pass at burn 3 and through full life
Edge 1 Edge 2 Group wick for this jar What it means for stage B
Passes on arm X Passes on arm X X Verify every other member on X
Passes on X only Passes on X and on the arm above X (the arm both pass) Verify on X; flag members that look like edge 2
Passes on X Passes only on the arm above None: the edges disagree The group is two groups in this jar; split it and give each half its own wick

The third row is not a failure of the method; it is the method working. A group that splits in the 10 cm jar but holds in the 6 cm jar is plausible (a small pool may forgive differences a large one exposes; judgement, to be tested), and it tells you exactly where the extra testing has to go. If two of your three groups split in most jars, your provisional groups were wrong; re-sort before stage B.

Mistake: picking the cheapest oil in a group as its representative. Why it fails: price says nothing about how an oil wicks, so the group wick can end up set by an easy member and the hard members fail at verification. Fix: pick edges on what the page states. Dark Vanilla costs more than Roasted Coffee at 500 g; it is in stage A because it states vanillin, not because it is cheap.

Stage B: every grouped cell verified before sale

A group tells you where to start. Only the oil's own candle tells you it can be sold.

This is the rule grouping cannot remove: every oil, in every jar it will be sold in, passes two candles on its group's wick, burned to about 1 cm left. Two candles because one can be an accident of pouring; full life because the top of a candle cannot approve the bottom (how far down to burn a test candle). For the fourteen non-edge oils in five jars that is 140 candles and 33,600 g of candle, 192 g of each oil, which two 100 g bottles cover with only 8 g spare.

1
Pour on the group wick onlyTwo candles per oil per jar, same wax, same 8%, same fills and cure as stage A. No second arm yet.
2
Screen at burn 3 against the same rulePool to the glass by burn 2–3, trimmed flame inside your standard (many makers use about 2.5–5 cm), no heavy carbon, no soot. Glass watched, never touched.
3
Pass: carry both to about 1 cm leftAn oil is approved in that jar only when both candles pass the full life.
4
Fail: one step in the direction of failureUnder: pour two on the next arm up; over: the next arm down. That is stage C, and the failing oil now has its own two-arm bracket.
5
Two failures the same way in one jar: split the groupIf two members fail in the same direction in the same jar, the group wick is wrong for part of the group there. Give those members their own group for that jar.
6
Log the exceptionOil, jar, direction, the arm that passed. How a long-term two-group standard admits new oils and keeps an exceptions log is the behaviour-groups post.

Our worked example has six failed cells out of seventy (illustrative, not a prediction): Vanilla Bean and Cinnamon Vanilla under in the 7 and 8 cm jars, Japanese Cherry Blossom over in the 7 cm jar, and Lemongrass and Lime under in the 10 cm jar. The two 2.5% vanillin oils failing together in two jars is exactly the pattern step 5 is for: in a real run, it would split the heavy group in those jars. Stage C costs 12 candles and 2,700 g of candle, and each failing oil needs another 100 g bottle, because verification left only 8 g in its first two.

Per oil, the change is clearest in the bottles. Before grouping every oil needs 464 g, so you buy a 500 g of each. After, only the six edges need that; each verified oil needs 192 g, two 100 g bottles. A 500 g bought "to be safe" for a verified oil would leave 308 g on the shelf before you know whether it sells. One oddity cuts the other way: Blue Ocean's 500 g is fractionally dearer per gram than its 100 g (₹0.01 a gram more), so for that oil small bottles are not even a premium.

When grouping saves less than you think

Grouping removes bracketing, not testing. In the worked example the six edges still account for 34,800 g and verification for 33,600 g: verification is nearly half of what remains, and the rule says it cannot be skipped. Three things move the number honestly.

Sell fewer oils in the big jar. The 10 cm column is half the grams of every row. If only six of the fourteen verified oils will ever go into the 10 cm jar, you verify those six there and no others: 16 fewer candles and 8,000 g less candle. The rule is "every jar it will be sold in", not "every jar you own".

Get the groups right first. Every failure in stage B costs two more candles and another bottle. A group sorted carelessly fails more often; one sorted on stated bases, vanillin lines and families fails less. The pages are free to read.

Don't add groups to feel safe. Four or five groups mean more edges in stage A (two per group in every jar) and fewer members per group to share the saving. Three is our starting suggestion for twenty oils; two can work for a narrow range. If it is the jars, not the oils, you are unsure about, the anchor row-and-column design reads jar effects and fragrance effects separately; once groups are settled, fewer wick SKUs is the SKU audit.

Argued against our own interest: a shortcut that sells more wax is "group, then verify on one candle and a short burn". It halves stage B and it is how a heavy oil ends up overheating a customer's 10 cm jar in its final third. Two candles to about 1 cm left is the rule; if the calendar can't hold it, launch fewer oils first and add the rest after. Cutting obvious failures early from 20 fragrances shows what you can skip safely.
Honest about our range: grouping cannot create a wick CSI doesn't sell. If a group's edges agree that the right wick sits between C1 and C2, or between C2 and Cotton Braided, the whole group inherits that gap. Spacing (for pairs) and load are levers; another supplier's in-between size may be the real answer, and we'd rather tell you on WhatsApp than sell you the wrong rung.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results; the oils are picked as group edges, on what their pages state. Skip for now: 1 kg of any oil (no cell here needs more than 464 g), and 500 g bottles of oils that are only being verified.

Grouping only works if the wax never changes: a wick result from one wax does not carry to another. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; price is flat at ₹0.51 a gram from 1 kg to 10 kg. At this scale wax is the biggest line: 65,412 g after grouping, 106,720 g before. Argued against our own interest: grouping cuts your wax order from eleven 10 kg bags (₹55,814.00) to seven (₹35,518.00). Japanese Cherry Blossom (6–13%) and Cinnamon Vanilla (up to 13%) state more than CSI 464's 10%; the lower ceiling governs, and the matrix runs at 8% anyway.

wick · the large single for 8–10 cm
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The upper arm at 8 cm and the large single at 9 and 10 cm. The page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; treat that as one bracket rung, not a rule. Grouping cuts the Cotton Braided count from 120 to 58 in the worked example, at a flat ₹12.00 a wick. Limitation: it is CSI's largest tabbed single; if a heavy-group oil is still under on it at 10 cm, the next step is a pair, not a bigger Cotton Braided.

fragrance oil · gourmand · heavy-group edge
Dark Vanilla Fragrance
One of the two edges of the heavy group, chosen because its page says "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax" and its notes run "rich vanilla and spice opening into deep caramel and cream, settling into dark amber and warm musk". Page load: "candles (6-10%)". The matrix uses 464 g from a 500 g bottle, leaving 36 g. Honest money fact: it is a dear edge at ₹7.68 a gram at 500 g; the 500 g costs ₹2,420.00 more than Citrus Lemon's. That is the price of testing the group's hardest member instead of its cheapest.

fragrance oil · citrus · light-group edge
Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil
The other end of the light group: "zesty lemon and lime top notes, bright grapefruit and orange heart, and a tangy mandarin finish", page load "candles (6-10%)", nothing heavy in the stated base. If a light-group wick is going to run hot anywhere, a bright citrus is a sensible place to look for it (a tendency to test, not CSI data). It is also cheap per gram: ₹2.84 at 500 g, so its edge costs ₹1,317.76.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. Stage A plus stage B for twenty oils will not finish full life by then on a small bench. Launch the oils whose cells have passed, and keep verifying the rest for Christmas (25 December 2026). Send us your list for a quote on CSI 464 by the 10 kg bag, Eco C1/C2 and the oils, with a GST invoice and dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Group to plan the test, never to skip it.
Collapse twenty oils into a few behaviour groups, bracket each group's edges in every jar, and verify every member on its group's wick before it goes on sale.
"A group is a guess with good manners. The candle in its own jar is the evidence."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wax, wicks and oils named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still shows you how to buy four fewer 10 kg bags of our wax, 100 g instead of 500 g bottles for most oils, and why grouping cannot fill a gap in our wick range.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: every oil on the list is in stock at 100 g and 500 g; the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and flagged where it appears. Families, notes, vanillin lines and loads are quoted from the product pages as captured; where a page is silent we say so.

The groups, edges, stage design, worked-example group winners and the six failed cells are our judgement or illustration; the 0.35 cm wall and the fills are worked examples; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different wick for every candle fragrance?
Not necessarily. Many oils share a wick in a given jar and wax. Group them provisionally, bracket two edge oils per group, and verify every member on the group's wick with two candles burned to about 1 cm left.
How do I group candle fragrances for wick testing?
Start from what each product page states: family, notes (especially the base), any vanillin line, and load range. Light citrus and herbals, middle florals and woods, heavy vanilla, coffee and oud is a common first sort. Treat it as provisional until tested.
Can I group similar jar sizes too?
Only when their inside diameters are within a few millimetres. A 1 cm step between 6 and 10 cm jars changes pool area by roughly 26%–41%, so jars a centimetre apart need their own brackets.
How many test candles do I need for 20 fragrances in 5 jar sizes?
In our worked example, about 284 with grouping (edges bracketed, others verified, a few failures re-poured) against 440 if every oil is bracketed in every jar. Selling fewer oils in the largest jar reduces it further.
If two fragrances are in the same group, can I skip testing one?
No. Grouping removes the bracket, not the test. Every oil needs two candles on its group's wick, burned to about 1 cm left, in each jar you will sell it in.
What if one fragrance fails on its group's wick?
Pour two candles on the neighbouring wick in the direction it failed. If two members fail the same way in the same jar, split the group for that jar.
Before you pour 100 brackets
284 candles instead of 440, and every cell still tested.
Sort your oils into provisional groups from their pages, bracket two edges per group in every jar, then verify each member on its group's wick to full life. Send us your list on WhatsApp and we will check the groups and quote the wax and wicks.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on the commercial wick matrix (4281–4300): the grouping maths for five jar diameters and twenty fragrances: why the fragrance axis collapses and the jar axis doesn't, three provisional behaviour groups from page data, a three-stage plan (edges bracketed, members verified, failures stepped), candle, gram and rupee totals before and after grouping, and the verification rule.
