CSI Wick Lab · 6 cm Jars
A slight tunnel on the first burn of a 6 cm soy candle is a measurement, not a verdict. Measure the inside of the jar, log burns 1–3 at four points, and step from C1 to C2 only if the ring is still there at burn 3.

Quick answers — read this first
My 6 cm soy candle with 8% Lavender tunnels slightly on the first burn. Should I increase the wick? Not yet. A thin ring of solid wax after the first burn in a small jar is a "keep testing" signal, not a wick-up order. Burn the same candle twice more, logging the ring at four points, and let burns 2 and 3 decide.

What is the catch-up rule? Our judgement, not a standard: if the pool meets the glass all round by the end of burn 2 or 3 and the ring never grows at any point, keep the wick and test on to about 1 cm left. If the ring is still there at burn 3, the same width or wider, with the wick centred and the air still, bracket one rung up: C1 to C2.

Is my jar really 6 cm? Probably not inside. CSI's 6 cm listings don't say which. On a 0.35 cm wall (our assumption) a 6 cm outside is 5.3 cm inside: a 22.06 cm² pool, not 28.27 cm². Measure the inside at rim, middle and base.

If the ring persists, what does the test cost? Six candles in the 6 cm jar, three on C1 and three on C2, 100 g each at 8% (8 g Lavender + 92 g CSI 464): 48 g of oil, 552 g of wax, six jars, six wicks, ₹868.50 of materials. The C1 10-pack is out of stock, so buy the 20-pack.
The short answer
The verdict: continue testing. One slight first-burn tunnel in a 6 cm jar at a mid-range load does not justify a bigger wick.
The log: for burns 1–3, note ring width in millimetres at N, E, S and W at 1, 2 and 3 hours, plus depth and flame. Sessions long enough to matter (about 2.1–2.4 h by the rough one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule; plan 3 h).
The rule (judgement): glass wet all round by burn 2–3 and no ring growth → continue to full life. Ring persists or widens by burn 3 → bracket one rung up. Lopsided ring → fix centring or draught first.
The honest limit: CSI's rungs are C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, and Cotton Braided's page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm". In a 6 cm jar, C1 → C2 is the whole bracket.
A 6 cm jar from above, drawn to scale: burn 1, then two burn 3s Outer 60 mm; inside 53 mm on a 0.35 cm wall (our assumption, measure yours). Pool edges are a worked-example log, not CSI data. Ring = solid wax left between the pool edge and the glass, read at N, E, S and W. 1 cm at this scale (3.4 px per mm) N S W E 1 · Burn 1: the slight tunnel you saw 1 h: pool 25 mm wide, 22% of the surface 2 h: pool 41 mm, 60% 3 h: pool 47 mm, 79% (pool edge, solid line) Ring left: N 3, E 2, S 4, W 3 mm = 21% still solid Verdict: not a wick decision yet. Log burns 2 and 3 on the same wick, same room. A 3 mm ring looks small; it is a fifth of the surface. N S W E 2 · Burn 3: catch-up, so continue Pool meets the glass at N, E, S and W by 3 h No point wider than after burn 1 (all 0–1 mm). Depth about 0.5–1 cm, calm flame, no soot. Rule: same wick, burn on to about 1 cm left. Approve only after the full life passes. N S W E 3 · Burn 3: ring persists, so step up one rung Pool 45 × 44 mm at 3 h, 70% of the surface Ring: N 4, E 4, S 5, W 4 mm, wider than burn 1 At every point, with the wick centred and still air. Rule: bracket one rung up, C1 → C2, 3 candles each. Already on C2? CSI's next rung (Cotton Braided) is described for candles "exceeding 8 cm".
A jar listed as 6 cm, seen from above at true scale (3.4 px per mm). Grey is solid wax, white is the liquid pool. View 1 is burn 1 of the worked-example log below: a 3 mm ring looks trivial, yet it is 21% of the surface. Views 2 and 3 are the two ways burn 3 can go. The wall thickness is our assumption and the pool edges are illustrative, not CSI data.
Straight answer
I'm using a 6 cm jar with soy wax and 8% Lavender. My candle tunnels slightly on the first burn. Should I increase the wick or continue testing?
Continue testing, on the same wick, and write it down. A first burn starts from wax and glass that are cold all the way through, and a slight ring on burn 1 is common in soy and often closes on burns 2 and 3. That is a tendency, not a promise, which is why you log it. Burn two more sessions of about three hours, reading the ring at four compass points at 1, 2 and 3 hours. If the pool meets the glass all round by burn 2 or 3 and the ring never widens, keep the wick and carry the candle through its full life to about 1 cm left. If a ring of 2 mm or more is still there at burn 3, as wide as after burn 1 or wider, with a centred wick and still air, run the bracket one rung up: three candles on C1 and three on C2. Lavender at 8% is mid-range on its page's 6–10%, so load is not the lever. Already on C2? CSI's next rung is described for candles "exceeding 8 cm"; check centring, session length and wax, and ask us.
One line: one slight tunnel is data, not a verdict; three logged burns decide, and at 6 cm CSI's bracket is C1 → C2.
Only if burn 3 fails the rule: the bracket needs Eco C1 (the 20-pack, ₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 29 September 2026) and Eco C2 (10 for ₹94.40). That is ₹212.40 if you already own the wax, Lavender and jars. If burn 3 passes, buy nothing.
Eco C1/C2 — from ₹94.40

Why a slight first-burn ring is not a wick verdict

Burn 1 tests the wick and the way you lit it. Only burns 2 and 3 start to separate the two.

A tunnel is a pool that burns down faster than it spreads, leaving a wall of solid wax on the glass. A slight first-burn tunnel is smaller: a ring a few millimetres wide still on the glass when you put the candle out. The fix for a real tunnel is more heat; the fix for a slight first-burn ring is often time and a proper session.

Every first burn is different from the later ones. The whole candle starts at room temperature, so the flame's first hour goes into warming solid wax; the glass is cold; and the session is usually cut short. By burn 2 the surface has melted once and the pool commonly spreads faster. Many makers see a burn-1 ring close on burn 2 or 3: a common pattern in soy, not a rule, and exactly what the log below tests.

Be cautious about wicking up in a small jar. A 6 cm jar is short (the CSI listing says 6.5 cm tall), so the final third, where heat commonly builds, arrives within a few sessions. A wick chosen to erase a 3 mm ring on burn 1 can be the one that runs too hot near the bottom. That is why this cluster never approves a wick on the first pool, and why the acceptance gates in how far down to burn a test candle run to about 1 cm left.

Before you blame the wick: was burn 1 long enough?
A very rough rule of thumb is about one hour of burning per 2.5 cm of jar width, which is about 2.4 hours on the listed 6 cm and about 2.1 hours on a 5.3 cm inside. Another common rule is a full pool within about 3–4 hours of a first burn. Both are rules of thumb, not CSI data. If your first burn lasted an hour, the ring describes the hour, not the wick. Whether a wick survives customers who stop at an hour is the short-first-burn stress test.

Lavender itself is unlikely to be the cause at 8%. The Lavender Fragrance Oil page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles", and CSI 464's page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". You are mid-range on both. Heavier, vanillin-rich or resinous oils are the ones commonly linked to a wick change; a light herbal like lavender often wicks more easily (a tendency, not CSI data). Vanilla, coffee and oud each have a post in the cluster map below.

Measure the inside before you judge the pool

The pool can only reach the glass it can see. That is the inside wall, not the number on the listing.

A tunnel is judged against the inside of the jar, so measure that first. None of CSI's 72 container listings states an internal diameter; eight glass listings give a 6 cm figure (seven 120 gm shiny jars and the Shot Glass Jar) without saying inside or outside. Treat it as the outside until your ruler says otherwise. The full argument is the external-versus-internal diameter post; here is the small-jar version.

1
Rim: inside to insideA steel ruler across the mouth, inside edge to inside edge through the centre, twice at right angles; write both. Callipers with inside jaws are more precise.
2
Wall: at the rimCallipers on the lip give the wall. Outside diameter minus twice the wall is the inside. Our worked example assumes 0.35 cm, which turns a 6.0 cm outside into 5.3 cm inside. That is an assumption, not a CSI figure.
3
Middle and base: the heights the pool will live atJars that look straight often taper. Curl a card strip inside the jar at mid-height and about 1 cm above the base, mark the overlap, and divide that length by π (3.14). Record all three heights.
4
Base thickness and fill lineDrop a ruler to the floor of the jar inside and outside; the difference is the base. Then weigh water to your fill line on a tared scale. Commonly used candle-maker rules of thumb put wax at roughly 0.86–0.9 times the water weight; confirm with a weighed test pour.
5
Measure three jars from the batchGlass varies between batches. If three jars differ by more than a millimetre or two, note which jar each test candle went into.

On CSI's Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid the page says "Capacity: 120 gm" but not whether that is to the brim. Our worked example pours 100 g, 20 g under it, to leave headspace (about 1–1.5 cm is a common rule of thumb). That is our choice, not a CSI figure; weigh your own fill line and keep the load at 8% of total weight: 100 g = 8 g of oil + 92 g of wax.

Mistake: judging the ring on a black or dark jar from the side, or judging "full pool" by eye on a 6 cm candle. What happens: black glass hides the wax, and on a 53 mm pool a 2 mm ring is easy to miss. Fix: photograph from directly above with a ruler across the rim at each check and read the four rings from the photo. Keep hands clear of the flame; never touch the glass to judge heat.

What "6 cm" means in pool area

In a small jar, millimetres are percentages. A 3 mm ring is a fifth of the candle's surface.

Pool area is π × r² on the inside radius: geometry, not a burn prediction. The 0.35 cm wall is our assumption; the 7 cm rows use it too, for CSI's 7 cm listings, the other half of this cluster.

Pool geometry · 6 cm and 7 cm listings
π r² on internal radius · 0.35 cm wall assumed where the listing figure is read as outside · all figures declared
Jar figure read as Inside diameter Pool area to the glass Rule-of-thumb first-burn time
6 cm outside (CSI 6 cm listings, our reading) 5.3 cm 22.06 cm² about 2.1 h (one hour per 2.5 cm)
6 cm inside (if your ruler says so) 6.0 cm 28.27 cm² (28% more than the line above) about 2.4 h
7 cm outside (CSI 7 cm listings, our reading) 6.3 cm 31.17 cm² (41% more than a 6 cm outside) about 2.5 h
7 cm inside 7.0 cm 38.48 cm² about 2.8 h

Read the listing's 6 cm as the inside and you plan for 28% more surface than a 0.35 cm wall leaves, the kind of error that makes a correct wick look "too small". And a 7 cm jar adds about 41% of pool area over a 6 cm one, so a wick result does not transfer between them. The hour counts use width only; wax, oil, wick and room all move them.

Now the ring. In our worked example burn 1 leaves an average 3 mm ring: a 47 mm pool, 17.35 cm² out of 22.06 cm², so 79% of the surface has melted and 21% (4.71 cm²) is still solid. A thin line, and a fifth of the candle. That is why the log records millimetres at four points rather than "almost full".

Centring is worth millimetres in a 6 cm jar
A wick 3 mm off-centre in a 53 mm jar is 23.5 mm from the near wall and 29.5 mm from the far one, 26% further. The far side lags every burn and reads as a tunnel that has nothing to do with wick size. Hold the wick with a centering device or two sticks until the wax has set.

The pool log and the catch-up rule

Three burns, four compass points, three check times. Thirty-six numbers settle a question one glance cannot.

Use the candle you already poured, ideally with a twin from the same pour. Change nothing between burns: same wick, trim, room and session length. You are watching whether the ring shrinks to nothing or stays.

How to log it

Session: about 3 hours or until the pool meets the glass all round, with a full cool-down between sessions. Before each burn: trim to about 5–6 mm (one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn"), check the wick is central, and light in still air: no fan, AC vent or open window. At 1, 2 and 3 hours: photograph from above with a ruler on the rim; read the ring at N, E, S and W in millimetres ("0" when the pool touches the glass). At the end: depth near the wall with a skewer, trimmed flame height, and any soot, flicker or carbon cap. Burn within sight.

3 (catch-up) 8 / 8 / 9 / 8 1 / 0 / 1 / 0 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 about 0.9 cm about 3.5 cm, calm Pass: continue to full life.
2 (fail) 13 / 12 / 14 / 13 6 / 5 / 6 / 6 3 / 3 / 4 / 3 about 0.9 cm about 2.5 cm, quiet No narrower than burn 1.
3 (fail) 14 / 14 / 15 / 14 7 / 7 / 8 / 7 4 / 4 / 5 / 4 about 1.1 cm about 2.5 cm, quiet Fail: bracket one rung up.

In the pass case each burn ends with a smaller ring and the pool meets the glass by burn 3. In the fail case the ring never shrinks and the pool deepens: the wick melts down, not out. A persistent ring, a deepening pool and a quiet flame together are the under-wicked pattern; a single slight ring is not.

The catch-up rule

Decision rule · after burn 3 (our judgement, labelled)
Read the four end-of-burn rings for burns 1–3 together · a rule of thumb for testing, not an industry standard
What the log shows What it points to Next step Purchase
By the end of burn 2 or 3 every point is 0–1 mm, and no point was ever wider than after burn 1 Catch-up. The wick reaches the glass once the candle is past its cold first burn Same wick. Burn on to about 1 cm left and judge the final third (the full-life calendar) Nothing
At burn 3 any point is still 2 mm or more, and it is as wide as after burn 1 or wider; wick centred, still air Too little heat for this jar, wax and oil Bracket one rung up: C1 v C2, 3 candles each (below) C1 20 at ₹118.00, C2 10 at ₹94.40
The ring is one-sided: 0 on one side, 3 mm or more opposite Off-centre wick, a leaning wick or a draught, not wick size Re-centre, relight in still air, repeat burns 1–3 on a twin A centering device (₹118.00 for 5), or none
The ring closes, but the trimmed flame runs above about 5 cm, mushrooms or soots, or the pool goes well past 1 cm Heat on the high side, not a tunnel Stop wicking up; read the over-wick signals in the fast-pool, big-flame post Nothing yet
Sessions were shorter than about 2.5 hours The log can't decide Repeat on a twin with 3-hour sessions Nothing

The thresholds are our judgement, chosen because they can be read off a photo; the flame range many makers use is about 2.5–5 cm and the common depth target about 0.5–1 cm. Set your own standard, then keep it fixed. How fast the pool gets there is the timed-pool-curve post.

Mistake: passing a candle at burn 3 and pouring the production run. Why it fails: the catch-up rule clears the top of the candle only. In a 6.5 cm-tall jar the lower third arrives within a few sessions, and that is where a borderline-hot wick commonly shows itself. Fix: the rule decides whether to keep testing the wick, never whether to approve it. Approval comes after the full life to about 1 cm left, with the glass watched, not touched.

If the ring persists: C1 → C2 on CSI's real rungs

One variable, a control, three candles a cell. Anything less and you are guessing with extra steps.

When burn 3 fails the rule, hold everything but the wick: same wax bag, Lavender at 8% on total weight, jar batch, 100 g fill, pour temperature, cure and room. Two cells: the wick you have (C1 here, the control) and one rung up (C2), three candles each, so one odd candle cannot decide. If your current wick is another supplier's, make it the control and ask us where it sits.

Why only two rungs? Because that is what CSI honestly has for a jar this size: the tabbed Eco wicks come in C1 and C2, with no jar range stated. The next CSI rung, Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, is described by its own page as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". At 6 cm (5.3 cm inside on our reading) that puts it outside the range its page describes, so it does not belong in this bracket. Eco Braided Wicks are described as "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars", and Performance Wooden Wicks come in a single listing with no widths to step between. The only CSI wick whose page names a smaller diameter is the untabbed Eco Candle Wicks Loose, "designed specifically for 2 inch diameters". So the whole 6 cm bracket at CSI is C1 → C2. If your answer lies between them, CSI lists no sized wick there, and we would rather say so.

Per candle that is ₹142.98 on C1 and ₹146.52 on C2: ₹43.20 of oil, ₹46.68 of wax, ₹47.20 of jar and the wick. The C2 candle costs ₹3.54 more. Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. From nothing, the cash outlay is ₹1,661.00 (Lavender 100 g, CSI 464 1 kg, five jars plus one, both wick packs and a centering device pack); if you already own the wax, oil and jars, it is ₹212.40 for the two wick packs.

The wick is the cheapest thing on the bench
A C2 costs ₹3.54 more per candle than a C1. The reason not to jump straight to C2 is not money. It is that a wick bought to erase a burn-1 ring can be the one that overheats a 6.5 cm-tall jar in its final third, and you only find that out by burning three of them to the bottom.

Protocol and decision

Pour all six the same day. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; the 6 cm jar's page states no heat rating, so pour at the low end and pre-warm clean jars (our judgement). Label bases C1-a to C2-c. The Lavender page states no cure time in the text we captured; the 25 of 102 CSI oil pages that do say 48–72 hours for soy, and many makers wait about a week. Keep the cure identical and log every candle the same way, in one still room.

Bracket decision · C1 v C2 · 3 candles each
"Passes" = at least 2 of 3 candles meet the catch-up rule by burn 3 with no heat signal · then full life decides

Passes Passes, but flame runs high or the pool goes past 1 cm C1. Your first tunnel was the first burn, not the wick Full life on C1 (calendar)

Fails Passes the ring, fails on heat later Your answer sits between C1 and C2, where CSI lists no sized wick Check wax, centring and session length; ask us on WhatsApp; consider another wick supplier
Fails Fails (ring persists on C2 as well) Neither CSI rung fits this system Re-measure the inside; review wax and fill height; don't reach for Cotton Braided without testing it as a separate, labelled arm
Split 1–2 or 2–1 inside a cell — Not decided Pour three more of that cell (6 candles' worth of Lavender is left)

Whether two rungs are enough to call a bracket "closed" (a documented fail on each side of the chosen wick) is the question the adjacent-sizes post owns. At 6 cm, if C1 passes, "nothing smaller" rests on CSI listing no smaller sized, tabbed wick: a limit of the range, not proof about your candle.

What not to buy for a 6 cm tunnel

A slight tunnel makes people shop. The log is free; start there.
What not to buy: Cotton Braided Wicks (₹120.00 for 10, ₹12.00 each) as the "bigger wick" for a 6 cm jar: its page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm". More Lavender to push to 10%: it is inside both ceilings, but it adds 10 g − 8 g = 2 g per candle (₹10.80 a candle), and oil does not widen a pool that the wick cannot reach; tendency is that more oil can make a flame smaller or sootier, the opposite of what a tunnel needs. Lavender 1 kg (₹5,221.00) before the wick is settled: it is only ₹0.18 a gram cheaper than the 100 g, and 1 kg is 125 candles in this jar. A 50-, 100- or 500-pack of either wick: the price per wick is the same in every pack, so a bigger pack buys you nothing but risk until full life has passed. Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10): one listing, no width to step between. Vybar (₹156.00): its page talks about fragrance retention and hardness, not pool width.
When the right purchase is nothing: if your first burn was under about 2.5 hours, if the ring is lopsided, if the candle was lit near a fan or window, or if you haven't yet done burns 2 and 3, there is nothing to buy. Re-centre, relight in still air, and log. In our judgement, most "slight first-burn tunnel" questions in a 6 cm jar end at the catch-up rule.

For the jar geometry behind all of this, see the jar diameter × wick hub; oil-specific brackets are in the cluster map below.

Five items, in the order you need them if burn 3 fails, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candles are counted at 8 g (100 g fill) and 12 g (150 g).

The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" and "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base"; 8% is mid-range and inside CSI 464's "up to 10%". No cure time or wick advice in the text we captured. Every size is in stock on 29 September 2026. The 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram, so buy the 100 g: it covers all six candles (48 g) and leaves 52 g, enough for 6 retests; the 50 g would leave 2 g. IFRA documentation is on request on WhatsApp.
Size Price Per gram 100 g candles (6 cm jar) at 8% 150 g candles at 8%

jar · CSI's own 6 cm listing
Black Shiny Glass Jar with Golden Lid
CSI's 6 cm jar for the bracket. The page says "Capacity: 120 gm" and "Dimensions: 6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height". It does not say whether 6 cm is the inside or the outside, it does not say whether 120 gm is to the brim, and it states no heat or hot-pour rating in the text we captured, so do not borrow the 85°C wording from the 150 g jar family. In stock on 29 September 2026; six other colours of the same 120 gm shiny jar are listed. Limitation: black glass hides the wax from the side, so read the pool from above.

tool · centring, because 6 cm forgives nothing
Wick Centering Device (Pack of 5)
A wick that sets 3 mm off-centre in a 53 mm jar sits 23.5 mm from one wall and 29.5 mm from the other, 26% further. The page describes a wooden bar, "Length 4.4" (11,4 cm)", with one "Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)", for openings "less than 4"": one wick, which is all this cluster needs. Argued against our own interest: two ice-cream sticks and a rubber band do the same job; pour six at once and the sixth jar needs them anyway. The Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5) is dearer for single wicks.

wax · the soy the worked example uses
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The worked example's wax; if yours differs, bracket in your own, because wick results do not transfer between waxes. The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C", and claims "excellent glass adhesion". Price is flat at ₹0.51 a gram from 1 kg to 10 kg. Argued against our own interest: the 500 g bag (₹260.00) covers only 5 of the six candles; two 500 g bags cost ₹520.00, more than one 1 kg bag, so buy the 1 kg, not the 10 kg, until a wick has passed full life.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here
500 g ₹260.00 ₹0.52 per g 5 of the six bracket candles, not all six
1 kg ₹507.40 ₹0.51 per g all six (552 g) with 448 g left, 4 more candles
5 kg ₹2,537.00 ₹0.51 per g the same per gram; after the wick has passed full life
10 kg ₹5,074.00 ₹0.51 per g production; flat per gram from 1 kg

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. A bracket poured this week, cured about a week and logged over three burns can answer the catch-up question by mid-October; the full-life burns need the weeks after that. Send us your candle count and we will quote wicks, 6 cm jars, Lavender and CSI 464 with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

Map of this cluster: 4201–4220

This page owns the short answer, the measurement, the pool log and the catch-up rule. Each other post owns one test for one situation in a 6–7 cm single-wick jar.

Cluster map · 4202–4220
6 cm speed and heat (4202), 6.5 cm oils (4203–4205), 7 cm load, pool and throw (4206–4213), one jar for many oils (4214–4216), full life and production (4217–4220)
No. What the post answers (linked)
4202 Full pool inside an hour and a big flame: a three-signal over-wick scorecard, and what "smaller" means below C1.
4203 6.5 cm, 10% vanilla mushrooms where lavender doesn't: swap the vanilla before touching the wick.
4204 6.5 cm, 8% coffee, small flame, edge wax: wick up first or load down first, in a 4-candle plan.
4205 6.5 cm, 8% oud struggles after several hours: a session-clock log to find the onset hour.
4206 Fine unscented, tunnels at 10%: why the unscented wick is only a baseline, and the scented re-bracket.
4207 7 cm, 8% rose pools very quickly: the step-down pair from C2 to C1.
4208 7 cm lavender, good flame, weak throw: the guarded wick-up trial, and why the answer is usually no.
4209 7 cm, 10% sandalwood mushrooms at two hours: a three-candle triad to split wick from oil.
4210 First-burn tunnel that corrects later: the short-first-burn stress test and the care-label decision.
4211 Edge only at three hours: a timed pool curve and when 3 h is acceptable.
4212 Perfect pool, little room fill: pool area by diameter, and why a bigger wick is not the fix.
4213 Strong throw, very hot glass: a throw-preserving step-down where safety outranks praise.
4214 One 7 cm jar for four oils: a same-wick screen, and which oils earn their own bracket.
4215 Vanilla needs a bigger wick than lavender: commonly yes, and the offset bracket.
4216 6% to 10% and the flame shrank: a load ladder on one wick, photographed against a ruler.
4217 Flame grows halfway down: the full-life calendar for a 150 g, 7 cm candle.
4218 Passes two hours, overheats at the bottom: bottom-zone shortcut candles as a screen.
4219 How many adjacent sizes before production: the bracket-closure rule on CSI's few rungs.
4220 One 7 cm jar across ten fragrances: an adaptive grid instead of 60 candles.

For 7.5–8 cm jars, the next hub is the two-burn catch-up in 7.5 cm. If the wick mushrooms over several burns as well, read the mushrooming-after-several-cycles post first.

The CSI principle
Log three burns before you buy one wick.
A slight first-burn ring is a measurement, not a verdict. Burns 2 and 3 decide whether the wick changes; the full life decides whether it stays. At 6 cm, CSI's honest bracket is two rungs.
"The first burn tests your patience as much as your wick. The third burn tests the wick."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, jars and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says the first answer is to buy nothing, that only two of our wick rungs fit a 6 cm jar, and that bigger wick packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, jar, load and temperature wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The catch-up rule and its thresholds, the 0.35 cm wall, the 100 g fill and the pool-log figures are our judgement or worked examples; melt-pool times, depths and flame heights are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Should I use a bigger wick if my candle tunnels on the first burn?
Not after one burn. A slight first-burn ring in soy often closes on burns 2 and 3. Log it at four points for three burns of about three hours; step up one wick size only if it is still 2 mm or more at burn 3 and no narrower than after burn 1.
How long should the first burn of a 6 cm candle be?
By a rough rule of thumb (about one hour per 2.5 cm of width), roughly 2–2.5 hours; many makers expect a full pool within about 3–4 hours. For testing, plan about 3 hours or until the pool meets the glass.
How do I measure the inside diameter of a candle jar?
Inside edge to inside edge at the rim, twice at right angles. For the middle and base, curl a card strip inside, mark the overlap and divide by 3.14. Or outside diameter minus twice the wall.
What wick size do I need for a 6 cm soy candle?
No single wick fits every 6 cm candle: the wax, oil, load and inside diameter all change it. With CSI wicks, bracket Eco C1 against Eco C2, three candles each. Cotton Braided's page describes it for candles over 8 cm, so it is outside a 6 cm bracket.
Can fragrance oil cause a candle to tunnel?
It can contribute: heavier or vanillin-rich oils and higher loads commonly change how a wick burns. Lavender at 8% is mid-range on its page's 6–10%, so it is rarely the first suspect. Don't raise the load to fix a tunnel.
How many burns before I know if my candle is tunnelling?
Three is a sensible minimum for a small jar. If the pool meets the glass all round by burn 2 or 3 and the ring never widens, keep testing on the same wick to about 1 cm left. If the ring persists or widens by burn 3, bracket one wick size up.
Before you buy a bigger wick
Log burns 2 and 3; if the ring persists, C1 v C2 costs ₹212.40 in wicks.
Measure the inside, burn the same candle twice more for about three hours, and read the ring at four points. Catch-up: keep testing to about 1 cm left. A persistent ring: a six-candle C1 v C2 bracket. Send us your log on WhatsApp.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (100 g at 8% = 8 g oil + 92 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 100 g fill is a worked example below the jar page's stated "Capacity: 120 gm". The 0.35 cm wall is an assumption; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Lavender 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm), depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame height (about 2.5–5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The catch-up rule, its thresholds and the pool-log readings are editorial judgement and illustrative. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
