CSI Wick Lab · 8 cm Jars
A full pool by burn 3 has passed the top of the jar. Before you move up to a bigger wick, burn both wicks to the bottom and let the lower third decide.
6 candles
C2 v Cotton Braided, three each, burned to about 1 cm left · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 8 cm soy candle with 8% vanilla tunnels at first but has a full pool by burn 3. Should I increase the wick? Not yet, and maybe not at all. A pool that catches up by burn 3 is commonly tolerated in testing. The bigger wick will almost certainly fix burn 1; what it may break is the bottom of the jar. Only a full-life comparison can say which matters more.

What is the comparison? Your current wick against one rung up, three candles each, burned to about 1 cm left. At CSI that is Eco C2 against Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm": your jar is at that border or below it.

What decides it? The lower third. Whichever wick passes the last third of the candle (flame about 5 cm or under after trimming, no flame leaning to the glass, no soot on the wall, no mushroom surge) wins. If only C2 passes, keep C2 and accept the three-burn catch-up. If both pass, the bigger wick has earned its place.

What does it cost? Six 200 g candles at 8% in your own jars: 96 g of Dark Vanilla, 1,104 g of CSI 464, three C2 and three Cotton Braided wicks, ₹1,384.20 of materials. CSI lists no 8 cm jar.
The short answer
The verdict: don't increase the wick on the evidence of burns 1–3. A full pool by burn 3 is a pass at the top; the lower third decides whether the current wick, or the next one, is right.
The test: C2 (control) v Cotton Braided (one rung up), 3 candles each, 200 g at 8%, weighed after every session, burned to about 1 cm left.
The deciding criterion (judgement): the lower third. Fail = trimmed flame above about 5 cm, flame leaning to the glass, soot on the wall, or a mushroom that returns every session. A bigger wick that fails there loses, however good its first burn was.
The honest limit: CSI's sized rungs are C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, with nothing between C2 and Cotton Braided. Cotton Braided's page describes it for candles "exceeding 8 cm". CSI lists no 8 cm jar.
The same candle twice, burned to the stop: where the verdict lives 200 g candle, 8% Dark Vanilla, 8 cm jar. The axis is grams of candle left (weigh it after every session, jar tared). Thirds by weight; the stop is about 1 cm of wax (about 36–38 g, estimate). Worked example, not CSI data. Upper third Middle third Lower third: decides stop 200 g 167 g 133 g 100 g 67 g 37 g grams of candle left (wax + oil), after each session C2 · your wick Cotton Braided rings, burns 1–2 full pool, burn 3 flame about 4 cm, calm: pass full pool, burn 1 lower third: flame 5.5–6 cm, leaning to glass, soot: fail stopped session with a ring on the glass session passes every check session fails a lower-third check
Each row is one candle's life, left to right, measured in grams of candle left rather than in sessions, because weight tells you which third you are in. Worked example: the C2 candle rings on burns 1 and 2, is full from burn 3 and stays calm to the stop; the Cotton Braided candle is full from burn 1 and fails in the lower third. Your log may run the other way. Thirds by weight, stop weight estimated from the water-weight rule of thumb; illustrative, not CSI data.
Straight answer
I'm using an 8 cm jar with soy wax and 8% vanilla. The candle tunnels initially but reaches a full melt pool on the third burn. Should I actually increase the wick?
Not on the strength of the first three burns. A candle that reaches the glass by burn 3 has passed the top of the jar, and early tunnelling that catches up by burn 2–3 is commonly tolerated in testing, provided the full life passes. The case for a bigger wick is that it fixes burns 1 and 2. The case against is where heat commonly builds: the lower third, where the glass above the pool has warmed, the pool can run deeper and the flame can grow. A wick chosen to cure a first-burn ring is the wick most likely to run hot at the bottom. So test the trade instead of guessing it: three candles on your current wick (C2 in our example) and three on one rung up (CSI's Cotton Braided), 200 g at 8% Dark Vanilla, weighed after every session and burned to about 1 cm left. Decide in the lower third. If Cotton Braided passes there too, move up. If only C2 passes, keep C2 and handle the slow start with the first-burn instructions on your label. If C2 itself fails the lower third, a bigger wick is the wrong direction entirely.
One line: the bigger wick wins burn 1 by default; make it win the lower third before you pour it.
For the pair you need only the rung up: Cotton Braided Wicks, 10 for ₹120.00, three used, 7 spare for a split cell. Add Eco C2 (10 for ₹94.40) if you are out of your current wick. That is ₹214.40 if you already own the wax, oil and jars.
Cotton Braided — ₹120.00

What the bigger wick fixes, and what it risks

A wick is chosen for the whole candle. Burn 1 is the part you see first, not the part that matters most.

Your candle is doing something common: the first burn leaves a ring on the glass, the second burn leaves a narrower one, and the third reaches the edge. Some of that is the first burn itself (cold wax, cold glass, a short session), and some is a wick that is only just big enough for this jar, wax and oil. Neither is a failure at the top of the jar. How to log a catch-up in millimetres and score it is the hub's job (the 7.5 cm two-burn catch-up hub); what the ring costs in wasted wax over the full life is the wasted-wax audit. This page asks the next question: if you do go up a rung, what happens further down?

As a candle burns down, the glass above the pool absorbs heat, the pool can deepen, and the flame can grow. These are common tendencies, not certainties, and they are why many makers stop test burns with about 1 cm of wax left and approve a wick only after full burn-downs. A wick that is "just right" on burn 3 at the top has headroom at the bottom. A wick that is "just right" on burn 1 at the top may have none.

Vanilla adds a second reason for care. Heavier, vanillin-rich oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick and sometimes need a wick change; that is a tendency, not CSI data, and it cuts both ways. It may be why your current wick is slow to open the jar; it may also be why a bigger wick mushrooms in the lower third. The Dark Vanilla page itself states "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax", a colour note, and no wick advice in the text we captured.

Mistake: moving up a rung after three good burns on the new wick. What happens: the new wick passes the top (it was always going to) and the problem surfaces in customers' homes, in the last third, as a tall flame, a sooty rim or a hot jar. Fix: give the bigger wick the same full-life test as the old one. Three good burns at the top are the start of its test, not the end.

8 cm and the "exceeding 8 cm" wording

Your jar sits exactly on the line of the only wick page that names a diameter above 5 cm.

CSI's rungs for a jar this size are Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made. The Eco page states no size or jar range in the text we captured. The Cotton Braided page says the wicks are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". There is no sized, tabbed wick between C2 and Cotton Braided at CSI, so "one rung up" from C2 is a bigger jump than you might want. We would rather say that plainly than sell you a pack of 50.

Whether your jar "exceeds 8 cm" depends on which 8 cm you measured. Measure the inside at the rim and at mid-height (method: external versus internal diameter).

Geometry · an 8 cm jar · 200 g candle
π r² on the inside radius · 0.35 cm wall assumed · column from the water-weight rule of thumb · all figures declared
Figure 8 cm read as outside 8 cm read as inside
Inside diameter 7.3 cm 8.0 cm
Against the Cotton Braided page ("exceeding 8 cm") below it at the border, not exceeding
Pool surface at the glass 41.85 cm² 50.27 cm² (20% more)
Rule-of-thumb first-burn time (1 h per 2.5 cm) about 2.9 h about 3.2 h
200 g candle, estimated wax column about 5.3–5.6 cm shorter; measure yours

On either reading, Cotton Braided is at or beyond the edge of the range its own page describes. That does not make it wrong for your candle: page wording is one bracket rung, not a rule. It makes it a candidate that must prove itself in exactly the zone where an oversized wick shows up.

CSI has no 8 cm jar, and says so
No CSI container listing states 8 cm. The nearest in-stock glass is the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) at about 7 cm outside, and the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid at about 10 cm. Neither is your jar, and a wick result from either will not transfer to 8 cm. Run the pair in your own jars. If you need an 8 cm jar, ask us; we will tell you honestly if we don't have one.

The pair: C2 v Cotton Braided, burned to the stop

One variable, three candles a cell, every session weighed. The top of the jar is the warm-up.

Hold everything but the wick: the same wax bag, Dark Vanilla at 8% of total weight, jar batch, 200 g fill (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax), pour temperature, cure and room. Three candles per cell, so one odd candle cannot decide. The 200 g fill is our worked example for an 8 cm jar; weigh water to your own fill line and scale.

1
Weigh the empty jars, then pour six on one dayWrite each jar's empty weight on its base with the cell and number (C2-a to CB-c). CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". Your jar's heat wording is your supplier's; pre-warm clean jars and pour at the low end if it states none (our judgement). Trim the Cotton Braided at setting: the page gives the wick as 10.16 cm tall.
2
Cure all six the sameThe Dark Vanilla page says to cure soy candles "for at least 48-72 hours before burn testing". Many makers wait about a week. Keep the cure identical across cells.
3
Burn sessions of about 3–4 hours, togetherFor an 8 cm jar, count a session only if it runs at least about 3 hours (our judgement: roughly the rule-of-thumb 2.9–3.2 h). Light all six within a few minutes in one still room, trimmed to about 5–6 mm, spaced well apart. Burn within sight; cool completely between sessions.
4
Weigh after every sessionCandle weight minus jar weight = what is left. With a 200 g fill, the upper third runs to about 133 g left, the middle third to about 67 g, and the lower third from there to the stop. The stop, about 1 cm of wax, is roughly 36–38 g in a 7.3 cm-inside jar (a rule-of-thumb estimate; confirm with a ruler).
5
Log the top lightly, the lower third closelyUpper third: burn number of the first full pool, ring or not. Middle: flame height and any mushroom. Lower third: every check in the next section, at 1 hour and at the end of every session.
6
Stop at about 1 cm leftStop the session there, or earlier the moment any candle fails a safety check. A candle stopped early for a failure is a fail, not a missing result.

How many sessions this takes depends on how fast your candle burns: weigh after burn 1 and you have your own grams per session to plan with (the calendar method is the full-life calendar post). Deeper pools in the lower third can be measured the way the 7.5 cm depth-curve post does it, with a clean stick at a fixed point.

The lower-third checks that decide

Everything above 67 g is qualifying. Everything below it is the final.

These checks are our judgement, built on common rules of thumb (flame about 2.5–5 cm; pool about 0.5–1 cm deep) and on what you can see without touching anything. A candle fails the lower third if any one of the first four happens in two sessions, or once with the flame near the glass.

Lower-third checks · every session from about 67 g left to the stop
At 1 hour and at the end of each session · trimmed to about 5–6 mm before lighting · still air · glass watched, never touched
Check How to read it Pass Fail
Flame height Ruler held upright behind the candle, photographed about 5 cm or under, steady above about 5 cm in two sessions, or growing each session
Flame to glass Look from above and from the side upright, centred leaning towards the glass, or the wick drifted to within a finger's width of the wall
Soot Wipe the inside of the glass above the pool with a tissue after the session clean or a faint film that wipes off at the rim only a dark band on the wall, or smoke visible while burning
Mushroom Look at the wick tip before trimming small or none a carbon cap that returns every session despite trimming
Pool depth Clean stick at the same point, mid-radius about 1 cm or less at the session end well past 1 cm and still rising (a warning, not a fail on its own)
Pool width Glass wet all round at the session end yes a new ring in the lower third (rare; note it)
Never judge glass heat by touch. Touch is unreliable and hot glass can burn. If you want a temperature, use a non-contact thermometer (CSI does not list one). Otherwise let the flame, soot and wick position speak: a flame leaning to the glass or a wick drifted to the wall is a stop, whatever the glass feels like. The deeper argument for safety-first acceptance in the final third is the hot-jar-near-the-bottom post.

Why these and not throw? Because throw improves with heat almost by definition, and a bigger wick will usually smell stronger. A stronger-smelling candle that fails the lower third has not earned its wick. If you want to know whether the extra scent is real diffusion or just more wax burned, that is a separate test; keep this one about the burn.

Reading the result

Four outcomes. Only one of them means "increase the wick".
Decision · C2 v Cotton Braided · 3 candles each · full life
A cell "passes" when at least 2 of its 3 candles pass every lower-third check to the stop · our judgement, labelled
C2 cell Cotton Braided cell Decision Then
Passes Passes Increase the wick. Cotton Braided fixes the early ring and has shown no lower-third cost Pour a production-style batch and repeat one full life; buy the 50-pack only then
Passes Fails Keep C2. The early ring is the price of a safe bottom Print first-burn guidance (a long first burn) on the label (the short-first-burn stress test owns that decision)
Fails Fails (earlier or worse) Both wicks run hot at the bottom: the wrong direction Test one rung down (C1) against C2, or review load and fill (the no-perfect-wick options)
Split 2–1 or 1–2 in a cell — Not decided Pour two more of that cell; see the oil note below

Two cautions. First, "passes" is not the same as "better". In the worked example in the diagram, Cotton Braided gives a full pool on burn 1 and fails at about 65 g left; C2 rings on burns 1 and 2 and runs calm to the stop. That is the outcome to plan for, not a prediction: your log may show the reverse. Second, if Cotton Braided fails and C2 passes but you cannot live with the early ring, CSI has no sized, tabbed wick between them. That is a limit of our range, not a fact about your candle; ask us, or test another supplier's in-between wick as a labelled third cell.

Argued against our own interest: in our judgement, the most likely good answer for an 8 cm jar at 8% vanilla that is full by burn 3 is to keep the wick you have, finish its full life, and sell it with honest first-burn instructions. The pair costs ₹1,384.20; skipping it and switching costs nothing today and may cost a batch later. If you won't run the pair, don't switch.

Pair, materials consumed 6 candles ₹1,384.20

Per candle, before the jar, that is ₹229.20 on C2 and ₹231.76 on Cotton Braided: ₹126.40 of oil, the wax and the wick. The wick is the cheapest line (₹2.56 between them); the oil is the dearest. Costs are worked examples and exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. From nothing, the cash outlay is ₹1,771.80.

The oil margin is thin
Six candles at 16 g use 96 g of a 100 g bottle, leaving 4 g: not enough for a seventh candle. A split cell needs two more candles, and the 15 g bottle is smaller than one candle's oil. Pour carefully, or buy the 50 g (₹410.00) alongside if you expect to re-pour. The 500 g would save ₹3.52 of oil per candle (₹122.88 v ₹126.40), which is not worth ₹3,840.00 before a wick has passed.

For comparison, the series' standard 150 g candle at 8% uses 12 g of oil; if your 8 cm jar is filled shallower, scale every figure above to your own weighed fill.

Buying for the full-life pair

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candles are counted at 16 g (200 g fill) and 12 g (150 g).

The candidate. The page says it is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and claims it helps by "preventing tunneling"; it also says "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm", which may be taller than your jar, so trim it at setting. An 8 cm jar is at the border of that wording, and at 7.3 cm inside it is below it. That is exactly why this card is a trial, not a recommendation. tool · how you know which third you are in
Candle Making Weighing Scale
The lower third is defined by what is left, not by the session count, so weigh each candle after every session (jar tared before pouring). The page describes a digital scale with an LCD that "shows measurements in grams or ounces"; it states no capacity or resolution in the text we captured, so check it with a known weight. Argued against our own interest: the kitchen scale you weighed the oil on will do.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here
One scale ₹354.00 ₹354.00 weigh after every session to know which third you are in
₹354.00, once. Buy — ₹354.00
What not to buy yet: a 50-pack of Cotton Braided (₹600.00): the same ₹12.00 per wick as the 10-pack, bought before the lower third has spoken. More Dark Vanilla to push the load to 10%: it is within both ceilings, but a second change in the same test hides which one did what, and higher loads commonly make a flame smaller or sootier. Eco Braided Wicks or the braided roll to "make an in-between size": cut-to-length wicks are unsized, so you would be testing a new wick, not a step. A second jar style: the result belongs to the jar you tested.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. Pour this week, cure about a week, and burn all six together: the lower third decides in the second half of October if your sessions are about four hours. Tell us your candle count and we will quote C2, Cotton Braided, Dark Vanilla and CSI 464 with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Choose the wick at the bottom of the jar, not the top.
A bigger wick fixes burn 1 by default. It has to pass the lower third before it earns the jar. At 8 cm, CSI's rung up is Cotton Braided, described for candles "exceeding 8 cm": a candidate, never a given.
"Any wick can win the first burn if you make it big enough. The last third is where it has to be right."

This page still says the likely right answer is to keep the wick you have, that CSI has no sized wick between C2 and Cotton Braided and no 8 cm jar, and that a bigger wick pack before the lower third is a bet.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: every size shown is in stock except the Eco C1 10-pack, flagged where it appears. Wick, load, vanillin, cure and temperature wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The lower-third checks and pass rule, the 0.35 cm wall, the 200 g fill, the stop-weight estimate and the diagram's session log are our judgement or worked examples; flame height, pool depth and full-pool times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

Should I use a bigger wick if my candle takes three burns to reach a full melt pool?
Not automatically. A full pool by burn 3 is commonly tolerated in testing. Compare your wick with one size up through the full life, three candles each, and let the lower third decide: the bigger wick must stay calm, upright and soot-free near the bottom.
What wick size for an 8 cm candle jar?
There is no single answer: wax, oil, load and the inside diameter all change it. With CSI wicks, 8 cm sits between Eco C2 and Cotton Braided, whose page describes it for candles exceeding 8 cm. Bracket them and judge in the lower third.
Does vanilla fragrance oil need a bigger wick?
Often, as a tendency: heavier, vanillin-rich oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick and sometimes need a change. It is not a rule and CSI has no measured wick data for any oil, so test your vanilla at your load in your jar.
Why does my candle burn hotter near the bottom of the jar?
Commonly because the glass above the pool has absorbed heat, the pool runs deeper and the exposed wick lengthens as the level falls. That is why a wick is only approved after burning test candles to about 1 cm left.
Is tunnelling on the first burn normal for soy candles?
A thin ring on burn 1 that closes by burn 2 or 3 is common in soy, especially in wider jars and short first sessions. It is acceptable in testing if the full life passes; a ring that never closes is a wick or centring problem.
How do I know when I'm in the last third of a candle?
Weigh it. Tare the empty jar before pouring; after each session, candle weight minus jar weight is what is left. For a 200 g fill the lower third starts at about 67 g left; stop at about 1 cm of wax.
Before you move up a rung
Three C2, three Cotton Braided, burned to the stop: ₹1,384.20 in materials.
Keep your current wick as the control, weigh every candle after every session, and decide in the lower third. If Cotton Braided passes there too, move up; if only C2 passes, keep it and write honest first-burn guidance. Send us your log on WhatsApp.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 7.5–8 cm jars with a single wick (4221–4240). It owns the one-rung-up comparison through full life for an 8 cm vanilla candle that is full by burn 3 (current Eco C2 against Cotton Braided, three candles each, weighed after every session) and the lower-third checks that decide it.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 200 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the thirds by weight and the stop weight (from the 0.86–0.9 water-weight rule of thumb) are labelled worked examples or estimates; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Dark Vanilla 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame height (about 2.5–5 cm), pool depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and full-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. The pass rule and the diagram's log are editorial judgement and illustrative. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
