I Want to Reduce My Raw-Material Cost by Buying in Bulk — Which Candle-Making Supplies Usually Make Sense to Bulk-Buy First?
Share
Is wax cheaper in bulk? Mostly not on the listed packs. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 and 5 kg, and ₹599.90 at 10 kg. CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at 1, 5 and 10 kg. The exception is Natural Soy Pearl Wax, 5.6% cheaper per kg from 5 kg.
Are bigger fragrance bottles cheaper? For most oils, no. 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and 100 g. 24 oils save 5% or more, led by Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%) and Mango Coconut (20.7%). A few 1 kg packs are fractionally dearer per gram.
What should I not bulk-buy? Unproven fragrances, dyes, moulds, printed packaging and anything flat-priced you will not use within your normal reorder cycle. Bulk there buys risk, not savings. See what to leave in small packs.
Where the unit price actually falls
Most advice on bulk-buying assumes a smooth discount curve: buy more, pay less per unit. Real price lists are lumpy. On CSI's catalogue, some items drop sharply at one pack size and then stay flat, some never drop at all, and a few are fractionally dearer in the bigger pack. Before you rank anything, you need the unit price at each listed pack. The table below does that for every category a container-candle maker buys every month.
| Item | Smallest listed pack | Largest listed pack | Unit price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Wooden Wicks | 10 for ₹590.00 (₹59.00 each) | 100 for ₹4,130.00 (₹41.30 each) | −30.0% (−20.0% at 50) |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 5 for ₹200.60 (₹40.12 each) | 100 for ₹2,950.00 (₹29.50 each) | −26.5% (same at 50) |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | 5 for ₹118.00 (₹23.60 each) | 100 for ₹1,888.00 (₹18.88 each) | −20.0% |
| Mini Glass Jars, black | 5 for ₹129.80 (₹25.96 each) | 100 for ₹2,124.00 (₹21.24 each) | −18.2% |
| Votive Glass Jars, black | 1 for ₹35.40 | 10 for ₹318.60 (₹31.86 each) | −10.0% (flat from 5) |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 1 kg ₹450.00 | 50 kg ₹21,240.00 (₹424.80/kg) | −5.6% (from 5 kg) |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 1 kg ₹650.00 | 10 kg ₹6,370.00 (₹637.00/kg) | −2.0% (from 5 kg) |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg ₹507.40 | 10 kg ₹5,074.00 (₹507.40/kg) | 0.0% (500 g is ₹520.00/kg) |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1 kg ₹599.00 | 10 kg ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90/kg) | +0.2% — dearer |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 10 for ₹59.00 (₹5.90 each) | 1,000 for ₹5,900.00 (₹5.90 each) | 0.0% |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 10 for ₹120.00 | 1,000 for ₹12,000.00 | 0.0% (₹12.00 each) |
| Wax Melts Containers | 5 for ₹147.50 | 100 for ₹2,950.00 | 0.0% (₹29.50 each) |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 5 for ₹354.00 (₹70.80 each) | only pack listed | no larger pack |
Read the last column before anything else. Four items drop 18% or more: wooden wicks, the Salsa jar, stirring sticks and the black Mini Glass Jars. One wax drops 5.6%. The two container soy waxes most makers standardise on do not drop at all. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks even cost ₹0.90 a kilo more in the 10 kg bag than in ten 1 kg packs (₹5,999.00 against ₹5,990.00). The difference is trivial, but it tells you the 10 kg bag exists for convenience and fewer bags to store, not for a better rate.
Fragrance oils sit between the two groups. Measured from 100 g to 1 kg, 52 of 91 oils are within 1% per gram, and only 24 save 5% or more. The big savers are Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%), Mango Coconut (20.7%), Verbena (20.0%) and Roasted Coconut (19.2%). A few run the other way: Love Spell and Pomegranate Splash are fractionally dearer per gram at 1 kg (−0.2%), and Saffron Cedarwood is cheapest per gram at 500 g (₹5.17), not 1 kg (₹6.87). The one reliable fragrance step is out of the 15 g tester, which carries a median 23.1% per-gram premium over 100 g.
The bulk-first ranking
Price break is one of three questions. The other two are whether every candle uses the item, so its consumption is predictable, and what happens if it sits unused: can it go stale, go out of fashion, or trap cash you need for Diwali stock? Scoring each category on all three gives a ranking that holds for most container-candle businesses making a few hundred candles a month.
| Rank | Category | Unit break on listed packs | Used by every candle? | Risk if it sits | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jars with a pack break (Salsa, black Mini Glass Jars) | 18–26.5% | Yes, if it is your standard jar | Low: glass does not spoil, but it takes shelf space | Bulk-buy to the break |
| 2 | Wooden wicks, if your range uses them | 20% at 50, 30% at 100 | Yes, one per candle | Low | Bulk-buy to the break |
| 3 | Proven scents on the 24-oil list | 5–62% at 1 kg | No, only that scent | Medium: unsold oil is cash on a shelf | Kilo only proven sellers |
| 4 | Container wax (Chunks, CSI 464) | None | Yes, every candle | Low, if stored cool, dry and sealed | Bulk for stock security, not price |
| 5 | Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 5.6% from 5 kg | Yes, if it is your formula | Low | Buy 5 kg or more |
| 6 | Eco and cotton wicks | None | Yes | Low | Buy in the pack that saves reorders |
| 7 | Tools and consumables (stirring sticks) | 20% at 100 | Partly | Low | Buy the 100 once you know you use them |
| 8 | Flat-priced oils, new scents, dyes, moulds, printed packaging | None or n/a | No | High | Keep small until proven |
Two items deserve a note. Wax ranks fourth even though it has no price break, because it is the one input every candle shares, its monthly use is the easiest number in your business to forecast, and running out stops all production at once. Buying it in bigger bags is a sound decision; calling it a saving is not. Should I Buy Wax in Bulk Before Fragrance Oil Because Wax Is Used Across Every Candle While Individual Fragrances Sell at Different Rates? works through why wax should be secured before fragrance for exactly that reason. Fragrance ranks third, but only for proven sellers on the break list. A kilo of an unproven scent is the classic dead-stock purchase, and for 52 of 91 oils the kilo does not even buy a lower rate.
A 300-candle month, bought both ways
The candle is the series default: 200 g at an 8% load, so 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. 300 candles need 55.2 kg of wax, 4.8 kg of fragrance (800 g of each scent), 300 wicks and 300 jars. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption, left out of the table so the comparison stays clean. The table prices each category in small packs and in the listed bulk pack.
| Category | Small packs | Cost | Bulk packs | Cost | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 55.5 kg | 55 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹33,244.00 | 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹33,289.00 | -₹45.00 (bulk dearer) |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax, 56 kg (alternative) | 56 × 1 kg | ₹25,200.00 | 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg | ₹23,814.00 | ₹1,386.00 saved |
| Fragrance, 6 scents × 800 g | 8 × 100 g each | ₹22,111.04 | same 800 g at the 1 kg rate | ₹20,561.44 | ₹1,549.60 saved |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 300 | 30 × 10 | ₹1,770.00 | 3 × 100 | ₹1,770.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks, 300 (alternative) | 30 × 10 | ₹17,700.00 | 3 × 100 | ₹12,390.00 | ₹5,310.00 saved |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 300 | 60 × 5 | ₹21,240.00 | no larger pack | ₹21,240.00 | ₹0.00 |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, 300 (alternative) | 60 × 5 | ₹12,036.00 | 3 × 100 (or 6 × 50) | ₹8,850.00 | ₹3,186.00 saved |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks, 100 | 20 × 5 | ₹2,360.00 | 1 × 100 | ₹1,888.00 | ₹472.00 saved |
The pattern is plain. In a 300-candle month, bulk-buying Luxury Soy Wax Chunks saves nothing and costs ₹45.00 more. Moving the six scents to kilo rates saves ₹1,549.60, and almost all of that comes from three of the six oils. The big rupee figures sit with the formats that have breaks: ₹5,310.00 a month on wooden wicks, ₹3,186.00 on Salsa jars, ₹1,386.00 on Pearl wax. If your candle uses Eco wicks and White Matte jars, there is no bulk saving to find on either, and the rational move is to buy them in the pack that keeps you stocked.
| Oil | 100 g price | 1 kg price | 800 g in 100 g bottles | 800 g at 1 kg rate | Monthly difference | 1 kg saving per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹342.20 / 100 g | ₹3,068.00 / 1 kg | ₹2,737.60 | ₹2,454.40 | ₹283.20 | 10.3% |
| Mango Coconut | ₹500.00 / 100 g | ₹3,964.00 / 1 kg | ₹4,000.00 | ₹3,171.20 | ₹828.80 | 20.7% |
| Jasmine | ₹430.00 / 100 g | ₹3,923.00 / 1 kg | ₹3,440.00 | ₹3,138.40 | ₹301.60 | 8.8% |
| Lavender | ₹540.00 / 100 g | ₹5,221.00 / 1 kg | ₹4,320.00 | ₹4,176.80 | ₹143.20 | 3.3% |
| Sandalwood | ₹502.68 / 100 g | ₹5,026.80 / 1 kg | ₹4,021.44 | ₹4,021.44 | ₹0.00 | 0.0% |
| Love Spell | ₹449.00 / 100 g | ₹4,499.00 / 1 kg | ₹3,592.00 | ₹3,599.20 | -₹7.20 | -0.2% |
Mango Coconut alone accounts for ₹828.80 of the ₹1,549.60. Sandalwood saves nothing and Love Spell costs ₹7.20 more at the kilo rate. There is also a cash question the monthly column hides. To get kilo rates on all six you buy six kilos, ₹25,701.80 up front, against ₹22,111.04 for the month's 100 g bottles, and you carry 1.2 kg of oil into next month. That is fine for Mango Coconut, a clear saving on a scent you use steadily. It is poor value for Sandalwood, where the extra cash buys you nothing but stock. Three bulk buys that earn their cash
Three items where buying bigger does reduce the cost of every candle, and where the saving is large enough to justify the cash.

What to leave in small packs
Some supplies should stay small even when you are growing fast. Unproven fragrances are first: a scent you have not sold twice should not be bought by the kilo, whatever its per-gram rate. Dyes and mica are used in tiny doses, so even a small bottle lasts many batches. Moulds are bought once and reused. Printed labels and branded boxes lock in today's design and today's legal text; if either changes, the stock is scrap. None of these belong in a bulk-first list.
The same applies to flat-priced items bought far beyond your reorder cycle. Eco wicks at ₹5.90 each cost the same in a 1,000-pack as in a 10-pack. A 1,000-pack is ₹5,900.00 sitting in a drawer; for a 300-candle month that is more than three months of wicks, bought for no rupee saving. Buying it may still be sensible if reordering is a nuisance, but that is a convenience decision. I Can Save 10% by Buying Six Months of Candle Raw Materials at Once — How Do I Compare the Saving Against Cash Being Locked in Inventory? shows how to put a number on cash tied up that way, and My Supplier Offers a Discount if I Buy More Fragrance Oil — How Do I Calculate Whether the Discount Is Worth the Risk of Slow-Moving Inventory? applies the same logic to a supplier's fragrance discount.
Run the check on your own list
The ranking above is built on CSI's listed packs and a typical container candle. Your list may differ: you may pour pillars, use wooden wicks, or buy from several suppliers. The method is the same. Put each item in a row, fill in your own unit prices, and let the numbers rank themselves.
| Item | Monthly use | Unit price, small pack | Unit price, bulk pack | Monthly saving | Months of stock the bulk pack holds | Bulk first? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: 200 ml Salsa jar | 300 | ₹40.12 | ₹29.50 | ₹3,186.00 | 0.17 (50-pack) | Yes |
| Your wax | ||||||
| Your best-selling oil | ||||||
| Your wick | ||||||
| Your jar |
Sort the rows by monthly saving and cross out any row where the bulk pack holds more than about three months of use; the saving has to beat the cost of holding the stock, which I'm Getting Better Wholesale Prices on 100 Kg of Wax — How Many Months of Consumption Should I Have Before Ordering That Much? and I Can Save 10% by Buying Six Months of Candle Raw Materials at Once — How Do I Compare the Saving Against Cash Being Locked in Inventory? calculate with a labelled example rate. What is left at the top is your bulk-first list. For most makers it will be jars or wicks with a break, then one or two kilo oils, then wax in whatever bag size stops you running short.
Two final points. First, the listed packs are not the ceiling. Wax packs stop at 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg) and oils at 1 kg; anything beyond that is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published, so compare any quote against the listed per-unit rates on this page. Second, shipping changes the picture for small, frequent orders even where the listed price is flat — I'm Ordering Wax, Wicks, Fragrance and Jars from the Same Supplier — Can Consolidating Orders Reduce My Actual Landed Raw-Material Cost? and I'm Paying Shipping Separately Every Time I Reorder Small Quantities — How Do I Calculate Whether Larger Raw-Material Orders Would Actually be Cheaper? cover landed cost with example courier figures. And when your volume grows, the ranking shifts; I'm Growing from 100 to 1,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Raw-Material Purchasing Strategy Change at Each Stage? walks through the stages from 100 to 1,000 candles a month.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a page about bulk-buying, the convenient advice for us would be "buy everything bigger". Our own listed prices do not support that: the 10 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs fractionally more per kilo than ten 1 kg packs, Eco wicks are ₹5.90 at every size, and 52 of 91 oils are flat per gram above 100 g. So this page ranks bulk purchases by where the unit price actually falls.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are from CSI listings pulled on 24–25 September 2026; the Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹5.90 each) and White Matte Glass Jar (₹354.00 for 5) figures match Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Unit prices, percentage breaks and monthly totals are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 300-candle month, the six-scent split, the 200 g candle at 8% and the risk judgements in the ranking are working assumptions for illustration, not rules. Your own use and storage decide your list. For quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
