At a thousand candles a month you are no longer deciding whether you like a scent — you are deciding whether to commit three lakh rupees of materials and a month of a production line to it. So the test stops being a pour and becomes a qualification: four gates, each with a price, a criterion and a document, and each cheap enough that failing early is a result rather than a loss.

Quick answers — read this first
What does a proper fragrance qualification cost? ₹312.86 for three 15 gm candidate bottles, then ₹1,893.23 of materials for a six-jar load bracket on whichever candidate survives. That is ₹2,206.09 of pure cost. The 40-jar pilot that follows consumes another ₹12,120.13, but those forty candles are sellable if they pass, so it is inventory rather than expense.

How long does it take? Plan on five to six weeks from first sniff to a released recipe, because two of the gates include a fourteen-day cure and neither can be hurried. At a thousand a month that means qualification runs as a rolling pipeline alongside production, never as a pause in it.

What is the go/no-go criterion? Written before the test, not after. A full melt pool to the glass in two to three hours, no soot or mushrooming, a clean surface at day 28, and a hot-throw score at day 14 that beats or matches your incumbent on the same wax, wick and jar. Anything unwritten is an opinion.

Why not just pour 1,000 and see? Because a fault found after shipping costs the batch twice — ₹3,06,602.60 of materials wasted and the same again to replace it, before you count the customers. The qualification is about one third of one percent of that exposure.
The short answer
Gate it, do not sample it. Four gates — page and bottle, six-jar load bracket, forty-jar pilot at production settings, first batch with a hold-back — each with a written criterion and the authority to stop the project. A candidate that fails at Gate 1 has cost you ₹104.
Test in the vessel and wick you actually sell. A scent qualified in a 120 g jar on a thin wick tells you very little about a 200 g jar on a thick one, because the melt pool, the pool temperature and the release area all changed. One variable per test, and the vessel is never the variable.
Read the page before you pour. Some CSI oil pages publish a candle load, a measured flash point, a vanillin figure and a cure time; others publish a note pyramid and nothing else. Both are usable — but a silent page means the number has to come from your own gate, and from the SDS you request on WhatsApp.

The same fault, found in five different places, with bar length on a square-root scale so the first two gates are still visible beside the batch. Gates 1 and 2 are the only stages where the money is genuinely gone — ₹2,206.09 between them — and they are the two gates most manufacturers skip because they feel like homework. The bottom bar is what skipping them can buy: one month of materials wasted, plus one month of materials to make good, before anyone has counted freight, labour or a lost stockist.

I make 1,000 candles a month. How should I test a new fragrance before I run it across a full production batch?
Put it through four gates, in order, with the criterion for each one written down before the gate opens. Gate 1 is the product page and a 15 gm bottle: read what the page actually publishes — a candle load, a measured flash point, a vanillin figure, a cure time — and smell three candidates blind on card. Three 15 gm bottles of Saffron Cedarwood, Bergamot Amber and Japanese Cherry Blossom cost ₹312.86. Gate 2 is a six-jar load bracket on the survivor, three jars at 8% and three at 10%, in the exact wax, wick and jar you sell: ₹1,893.23 of materials, cured fourteen days. Gate 3 is a forty-jar pilot at the chosen load, poured at production settings by the people who will pour the batch — ₹12,120.13, of which every rupee is recoverable because the jars sell if they pass. Gate 4 is the first production run with fifty candles held back and a retained sample kept for the life of the SKU. The two gates that are pure cost total ₹2,206.09, against ₹3,06,602.60 of listed materials in a 1,000-candle month at 200 g and 8% — a ratio of about 1 : 139. What a thousand candles actually exposes

Before you design a test, price the thing the test is protecting. Almost nobody does, and that is why the test always looks expensive.

A thousand 200 g candles at an 8% load is 184 kg of wax and 16 kg of fragrance oil, before any allowance for spills and top-ups. Both of those numbers sit above the largest packs CSI lists, which is itself worth knowing: wax is listed to 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl Wax also at 50 kg) and fragrance oil to 1 kg. There is no 5 kg or 10 kg fragrance pack listed, so a month at this volume means sixteen 1 kg bottles of one scent at the listed per-kilo price, and that listed price is the ceiling — recurring volumes at this level are quoted on WhatsApp, and we will not guess what that quote is.

Worked out above: 1,000 × 184 g = 184 kg of wax; 1,000 × 16 g = 16 kg of oil. Wax bought as 19 × 10 kg gives 190 kg, a ~3% allowance for spills and top-ups. Per-candle figures are the pack cost ÷ 1,000. The jar's page states its capacity as a 200 ml fill weight, not a weight in grams — so weigh one filled jar before you plan a month around it, because 200 ml of soy wax is not 200 g. Quantities above the listed packs, and repeat monthly ordering, are quoted on WhatsApp.

Now the sentence that reframes the whole question. ₹3,06,602.60 is the cheap version of getting it wrong. If the fault is cosmetic and you catch it before dispatch, you have lost a month of materials. If it ships — a wick that drowns at the 10% load you guessed, a vanillin-present oil that yellows a white wax over three weeks on a shelf, a scent that reads beautifully at day 2 and flat at day 21 — you lose the batch, you make it again, and you have spent ₹6,13,205.20 of materials to sell one month's candles. Labour, freight, packaging and the stockist's opinion of you are all extra.

The four gates, priced

A gate is not a stage. A stage is something you pass through; a gate is something that can stop you, and it only works if you wrote the criterion down first.

The design principle is simple: each gate should cost roughly ten times the previous one and prove roughly ten times as much. That way the expensive proof is only ever bought for candidates that have already survived the cheap proof. It also means a failure is never a disaster — it is the system working, at the price the system was designed to fail at.

Read the cumulative column from the diagram alongside that table and the economics settle themselves. ₹2,206.09 is the total amount of money you can actually lose in this system, because from Gate 3 onward you are making sellable candles. About seven-tenths of one percent of a month's materials, to find out whether a month's materials should be spent.

Gate 1: the page and the bottle

Half of Gate 1 costs nothing at all. It is reading, and it is the half most people skip.

Before any oil is bought, read the candidate's product page and fill in five fields. What matters is not whether every field has an answer — it is whether you know which fields are blank, because a blank is a number your own test will have to supply. Across CSI's fragrance range the pages genuinely differ: some publish a candle load, a measured flash point, a vanillin figure and a cure time; 56 of 107 pages state no flash point at all, and a further group state only the shared perfume-grade line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based formats and not a measured value for that oil. Treat both cases the same way: the figure is not published — ask for the SDS.

That table is the whole point of Gate 1. Saffron Cedarwood publishes a full note pyramid and no percentage, which does not disqualify it — it means the load has to come from Gate 2, capped at the wax's own stated figure, and that the flash point is a question for the SDS rather than a number you may assume. Japanese Cherry Blossom publishes a wider range than most, up to 13%, which is only usable if your wax also publishes that much. Bergamot Amber publishes a conventional 6–10%. Three candidates, three different amounts of homework, all knowable before you spend ₹104.

Do not read a page's IFRA wording as a document in your hand. CSI pages use a range of IFRA wordings — from "IFRA compliance Yes - skin-safe within category limits" to a bare badge — and 36 of 107 pages do not mention IFRA at all. No page publishes a certificate number, an amendment number, a category number or a date, and nothing is attached for download. For a manufacturer at this volume, that means one line in your Gate 1 checklist: request the SDS and IFRA documentation on WhatsApp, and file what comes back against the SKU. That is CSI's stated practice — documentation on request — and it is how a stockist audit gets answered in a week rather than a month. Smell them blind, on card, and not on the same day you bought them
Label three cards with codes rather than names, dip each in one candidate, and score them a day later with someone who did not choose the shortlist. Strength from the bottle is not a quality signal and it is not a throw prediction — an oil that shouts in the bottle can be the one that disappears in a cool soy pool. What Gate 1 is really testing is whether the direction is right for your line, and that judgement is cleaner when nobody in the room knows which card cost the most.

Gate 2: the six-jar load bracket

One jar is an anecdote. Six jars, split across two loads and read at day 14, is the smallest thing that can honestly be called a decision.

Gate 2 answers one question: what load does this oil want in the wax I already use? Everything else is held constant — same wax, same wick, same jar, same add temperature, same pour temperature, same carton, same cure. Two loads, three jars each, because the third jar in each arm is what lets you tell a result from a fluke. The bracket for a candidate with no stated percentage is 8% and 10%: 8% because it is a conservative working default, 10% because it is where most CSI oil pages that do publish a figure put their ceiling for soy.

Keep one jar of your incumbent scent, poured the same day at the same load, in the same carton. Without that control you are comparing a new candle against a memory, which is how flattering results happen.

Two arms is the minimum; three is better if the candidate's page publishes a wide range. Japanese Cherry Blossom's page states 6–13% for candles and describes 9–11% as the balanced band, so on that oil the honest bracket is 8%, 10% and a third arm at 12% — and only if the wax also publishes that much headroom. Chunks state 8–13%, so 12% is inside both figures; CSI 464 states up to 10%, so on that wax the third arm does not exist. Gate 3: the forty-jar pilot

Gates 1 and 2 test the fragrance. Gate 3 tests your factory.

This is the gate most makers have never run, and it is the one that catches the faults that actually reach customers. A six-jar bracket is poured carefully by whoever designed it. A production batch is poured by a team, at speed, from a bigger melt, into jars from a different carton, on a day when something else went wrong. Gate 3 makes the pilot look like that on purpose: forty jars, at the chosen load, poured at production settings, by the people who will pour the batch.

Forty is not arbitrary. It is large enough for fill-weight variation to show up, for one bad jar to be one in forty rather than a catastrophe, and for you to pull burn-test units and a retained control and still have saleable stock. It consumes 640 g of oil and 7,360 g of wax — ₹12,120.13 of materials — and the sensible purchase at this gate is the 1 kg bottle at ₹6,867.60, because 640 g goes into the pilot and the remaining 360 g starts the production run if the gate passes.

The trap: piloting in the wrong jar to save money. Forty 200 ml jars cost ₹2,832; forty 120 gm jars would cost ₹1,888 and save you ₹944. It is the worst ₹944 you will ever save, because the pool diameter, the pool depth and therefore the wick decision all change with the vessel. A wick that reaches the glass in a 6 cm jar can tunnel in a 7 cm one. Pilot in the jar you sell, on the wick you sell — and if you sell two sizes, you have two pilots, because diameter changes the hot throw on its own.

A useful candidate for this worked example precisely because its page is informative in one direction and silent in another. It publishes a complete pyramid — "Top: Citrus, Cardamom Middle: Palo Santo, Saffron, Violet Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber" — which is exactly the base-weighted structure a manufacturer wants for a scent that has to survive a cool soy pool and a fourteen-day cure. It publishes no candle percentage, no flash point and no vanillin figure, which means Gate 2 supplies the load, the wax's stated ceiling supplies the cap, and the SDS supplies the flash point on request. The pack ladder runs from a 15 gm screening bottle to 1 kg, so every gate in this guide can be bought at the size it needs.

Every gate needs something to be measured against, and at production volume that something should be the scent already earning money. This page publishes the full set a qualification wants to compare with: a candle load of "Up to 10% for soy wax" with a cure of 48–72 hours, a measured flashpoint of 203°C, and "Vanillin content 0%" with no discolouration in white or neutral wax. Pour one control jar in every gate, on the same day, at the same load, into the same carton. It costs one jar and it converts every subjective judgement into a comparison.

The CSI principle
A gate you can pass without writing anything down is not a gate. It is a pour with good intentions.
At a thousand candles a month the constraint is not skill, it is repeatability. The criterion written before the test is what turns a good result into a specification, and a specification is the only thing a second shift, a new hire or an angry stockist can actually be shown.

Gate 4: first batch, with a hold-back

The first production month is still a test. The only difference is that you are allowed to sell most of it.

Release the scent into production, and hold back fifty candles — five percent of the month, about ₹15,330.13 of materials — from the first batch. They are not stock; they are evidence. Inspect them at day 14 and day 28, burn two of them, and only let the last cartons of that batch ship once the hold-back is clean. Then keep one retained sample per batch, labelled and lidded, for the life of the SKU. The day a customer or a stockist raises something, the retained sample is the difference between an investigation and an argument.

One variable per release, even when you are busy
The temptation at production scale is to fold several changes into one batch — new scent, new jar, a cheaper wick, a shorter cure — because the pour is happening anyway. Do not. If that batch comes out worse you will not know which change did it, and if it comes out better you will not be able to buy the result again. A new fragrance is one release. A new jar is another. The arithmetic of how quickly combinations multiply is in why every new wax × wick × fragrance combination needs burn testing.

The pipeline and the festive calendar

Five weeks of qualification is only a problem if you start it five weeks before you need it.

Add the gates up and a single scent takes roughly five to six weeks from first sniff to a released recipe — two days of desk review and blind cards, sixteen days for the load bracket including its cure, and twenty-one days for the pilot, with a little overlap. At a thousand candles a month you cannot stop production for that, so qualification has to run as a rolling pipeline: one candidate at Gate 1 every month, one at Gate 2, one at Gate 3, and a release roughly every quarter. Run it that way and you always have a qualified scent available when the market asks for one.

Then work backwards from the dates that actually matter. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. A festive scent that has to be on a shelf in the third week of October needs its production pour in late September, which means Gate 3 finished in early September, Gate 2 started in early August, and Gate 1 done in July. If you are reading this in the middle of September 2026, a brand-new scent is not a Diwali scent — it is a Christmas or a wedding-season scent, and the honest commercial move is to run this Diwali on a recipe that has already passed and to start the new candidate's Gate 1 now.

One more planning note, and it is a stock note rather than a test note. Because fragrance oil is listed only to 1 kg, a sixteen-kilo month is sixteen bottles, and a scent you have just qualified is a scent you will be reordering monthly. How do I test a new fragrance oil before a large production batch?
In four gates with written criteria. Gate 1: read what the product page publishes and screen three candidates blind on card from 15 gm bottles — ₹312.86. Gate 2: six jars, three at 8% and three at 10%, in your production wax, wick and jar, cured fourteen days — ₹1,893.23. Gate 3: a forty-jar pilot at production settings — ₹12,120.13, recoverable if it passes. Gate 4: the first batch with fifty candles held back and a retained sample. Only Gates 1 and 2 are unrecoverable, and together they are 0.7% of a 1,000-candle month's materials.
How many test candles do I need before a 1,000-candle run?
Six for the load decision and forty for the process decision, plus one control jar of your incumbent scent in each gate. Six is the minimum that can distinguish two loads with a spare jar per arm; forty is the smallest pilot in which fill-weight drift, off-centre wicks and a day-21 surface fault will actually show themselves. Anything smaller tells you about the fragrance but nothing about your factory. Pour every one of them in the jar and on the wick you sell.
How long should the cure be before I judge a test candle?
Take the longer of the two figures your materials publish. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before performing burn tests, while several oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy. For a production decision, use fourteen days as the judging point and keep one unlit jar to day 28 for cosmetic evidence. Judging at day 2 is how a weak-looking candle gets rejected and a greasy one gets released.
What fragrance load should I test if the oil's page does not state one?
Bracket 8% and 10% and cap at the figure your wax page publishes. Several CSI oils — Saffron Cedarwood and Santal Noir among them — state a note pyramid and no candle percentage, which is not a problem as long as you do not invent one. Where both pages publish a figure, you owe the lower of the two: 13% on Chunks becomes 10% the moment the oil page says up to 10% for soy.
Does a fragrance oil's flash point matter for a production batch?
It is a handling and documentation fact, and you should know it or know that it is unpublished — never assume it. Only 18 of 107 CSI fragrance pages state a measured value (for example "Flashpoint 203°C" on Sandalwood); 32 state only "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based formats rather than a measurement; and 56 state nothing. Can I buy 5 kg or 10 kg of one fragrance oil for a production month?
Not as a listed pack. 1 kg is the largest fragrance oil size listed, so 16 kg of one scent is sixteen 1 kg bottles at the listed per-kilo price — ₹1,09,881.60 for Saffron Cedarwood, for example. Wax is listed to 10 kg, with Natural Soy Pearl Wax also at 50 kg. Listed per-unit prices are the ceiling for those quantities; recurring monthly volumes are quoted on WhatsApp along with GST invoicing and documentation, and we will not state in advance what that quote will be.
