CSI Wick Buying · Wick Construction
A tall flame over a pool that stops short is often a trim problem, sometimes a construction problem, and rarely solved by a bigger version of the same wick. Trim first, then test CSI's real constructions side by side.
₹7.07
per tabbed wick from the Braided Wick Roll: 100 tabs, 61 m, the tabs cap the yield · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle flame is very tall, but the melt pool still doesn't reach the edge. Could the wick type be wrong? It could be, but check the free causes first: an untrimmed wick, a draught and a heavy oil all make tall flames. If the flame is still tall after a trim to about 5–6 mm in still air, and the pool still stops short, a different construction is worth testing.

What can I actually swap to at CSI? Three real constructions: tabbed Eco wicks ("natural fibers like cotton and paper"), Cotton Braided ("thick, braided construction") and the Braided Wick Roll, cut to your own length with its 100 tabs. CSI publishes no braid counts, diameters or core details for any of them, so the test, not a spec sheet, decides.

What is the order? Three candles per arm, three more for the winner. Start with C2 (control) against Cotton Braided: a ₹120.00 pack. Add the roll arm (₹706.82, ₹7.07 per tabbed wick) only if Cotton Braided also runs tall and short.

Is the roll the cheapest wick? Per tabbed wick, yes, if you use all 100 tabs. The 100 tabs cap the yield, not the 61 m, and the pack is the dearest of the three.
The short answer
Free first: trim to about 5–6 mm, still air, a full cure, and a look at the oil. Tall flames have more common causes than wick type.
Stage 1: Eco C2 control vs Cotton Braided, three candles each, from your C2 and a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00).
Stage 2, only if needed: add the Braided Wick Roll cut to 11 cm (judgement): ₹706.82 for 100 tabbed wicks, ₹7.07 each, with 50 m left untabbed at that length.
The honest limit: CSI publishes no construction specs, Cotton Braided differs in size as well as type, and 8 cm is your jar, not a CSI listing.
A type-swap order: three constructions, and the cap on the roll Top: the Braided Wick Roll to scale (10 px per metre). Bottom: per-wick cost to scale (26 px per rupee) and the pack each arm needs. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Cut length 11 cm is a worked example for a 9 cm tall jar. Not CSI burn data. 0 m 10 m 20 m 30 m 40 m 50 m 60 m 61 m 100 tabbed wicks × 11 cm = 11 m 50 m with no tabs (CSI lists no separate tabs) The tabs, not the length, cap the yield: 100 tabbed wicks at ₹7.07 each. Without the cap, 61 m would make 554 cuts. A · Eco C2 (control) tabbed · "cotton and paper" ₹9.44 a wick 3 + 3 from a C2 10-pack, ₹94.40 B · Cotton Braided tabbed · "thick, braided" ₹12.00 a wick 3 + 3 from a 10-pack, ₹120.00 C · Braided roll, cut 11 cm cuts · tab fitted by you ₹7.07 a wick 3 + 3 from the roll, ₹706.82 The cheapest wick to run is the one with the dearest pack: the roll is only cheap if you use its tabs. If the braid arm loses after three test wicks, ₹685.62 of roll sits unused. Test B first, add C if B also shows a tall flame.
Top: the Braided Wick Roll drawn to scale. At a 11 cm cut (our worked example for a 9 cm tall jar), its 100 tabs use 11 m of the 61 m; the remaining 50 m has no tabs, because CSI lists none separately. So the roll is 100 tabbed wicks at ₹7.07 each. Bottom: the three arms of a type-swap test, with each arm's per-wick cost to scale and the pack that covers three candles plus a replicate.
Straight answer
My candle flame is very tall but the melt pool still does not reach the edge. Could the wick type be wrong rather than simply too small?
It can be. A flame that climbs while the pool stays short suggests the wick is burning fuel upwards faster than it spreads heat outwards. That pattern is commonly linked to an untrimmed or carbon-capped wick, a draught, a heavy or vanillin-rich oil, or a construction that doesn't suit the jar, wax and oil. So first remove the free causes: trim to about 5–6 mm, burn in still air, check the cure. If the flame is still tall and the pool still short, test a different construction rather than simply buying a bigger version of the same wick, because more of the same wick usually means a taller flame. At CSI that means three real constructions: tabbed Eco wicks (your C2, kept as the control), Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, and the Braided Wick Roll cut to your own length. Run three candles per arm, and three more of the winner. Start with C2 against Cotton Braided (₹120.00 for 10). Add the roll (₹706.82, ₹7.07 per tabbed wick, 100 tabs) only if Cotton Braided also runs tall and short. Be clear about one limit: CSI publishes no braid or core specs, and Cotton Braided is bigger as well as braided, so this test tells you which product works in your jar, not a clean verdict on "type".
One line: trim and still the air first; then test constructions, not sizes: C2 vs Cotton Braided, and the roll only if both run tall.
The stage-1 order: a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00), set against the C2 you already have. Stage 2, only if needed: the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs (₹706.82). Both in stock on 1 October 2026.
Cotton Braided 10 — ₹120.00

Before any order: the free causes of a tall flame

A tall flame is the cheapest symptom to fix, if it isn't the wick.

The worked example: three 200 g candles in the reader's own jar, 8.0 cm inside and 9 cm tall (CSI lists no jar at 8 cm; about 8.7 cm outside on our 0.35 cm wall assumption). Each is at 8% Cinnamon Vanilla (16 g of oil + 184 g of CSI 464, load as a percentage of total weight) on Eco C2. At the end of a 3.5-hour session the trimmed flame stands well above the 2.5–5 cm many makers use as a practical range, and a ring of about 6 mm is left all round, 27.8% of the surface unmelted. A very rough rule of thumb puts this jar at about 3.2 hours to the edge.

Free checks for a tall flame with a short pool
Each is a common cause, not a certainty · fix it, then re-run one burn on all three candles
Check Why it can make the flame tall and the pool short Costs
Trim to about 5–6 mm before every burn A long wick feeds a taller flame without widening the pool (one CSI trimmer page: "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn") Nothing, or a wick cutter (₹295.00)
Remove carbon caps between burns Vanillin-rich gourmands are commonly linked to carbon build-up, which can lengthen and widen the flame Nothing
Still air: no fan, AC vent or window Draughts stretch and flicker the flame and melt one side Nothing
Full cure An under-cured candle is not the candle you will sell Time
Load within both ceilings Heavy loads are commonly linked to taller, sootier flames; the oil page's 13% is above CSI 464's 10%, and the lower one governs Nothing

If trimming alone brings the flame back into range and the pool to the glass, you have no wick purchase to make. That is the cheapest outcome in this cluster, and it is the subject of the long-wick smoke post. If carbon caps keep coming back only with dark gourmands like this one, the oil-group test in the dark-gourmand mushrooming post may be the better order. This page carries on for the case where the free checks are done and the flame is still tall.

Mistake: buying a bigger wick for a pool that stops short while the flame is already tall. Why it fails: a bigger version of the same wick usually means a taller flame still, more soot and a hotter jar, and the pool may still not reach the glass. Fix: keep the size question for after the construction question. If the pool were short with a small, calm flame, the size-up evidence in the never-reaches-the-edge post would apply instead.

What "wick type" means in CSI's range

You can only swap to constructions that exist. Here are CSI's, described only in the words their pages use.
CSI wick constructions · what the pages say, and don't
Quoted page wording · "not stated" means not in the text we captured · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Product Construction, in the page's words Tab Size or length stated Per wick
Eco Candle Wicks C1 / C2 "natural fibers like cotton and paper" Pre-tabbed Not stated ₹5.90 / ₹9.44
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made "thick, braided construction" Ready made "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; "exceeding 8 cm" jars ₹12.00
Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs "braided cotton wick" 100 tabs included 61 m roll; cut to your length ₹7.07 per tabbed wick
Eco Braided Wicks "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars" Not mentioned 5 m or 10 m ₹94.40 / ₹82.60 per metre
Performance Wooden Wicks Wooden; one listing — No widths see the construction-cost post

Three of those make a clean type-swap order: they are tabbed, or come with tabs, and need no extra part from another supplier. The Eco Braided Wicks don't mention tabs, and CSI lists no separate tabs in the catalogue data we captured. The wooden wick is a different family with its own cost case, which the mushrooming cost-per-candle post lays out, so it stays out of this order.

What none of the pages give is the thing a construction question really needs: braid pattern, ply count, core, diameter, or whether the wick is pre-waxed. We aren't hiding a spec sheet; we don't publish one. A supplier that sells several numbered series with stated specs can let you swap "type" while holding "size" steady. Whether you need that, and how to weigh it, is the another-wick-series post. With CSI's range, the honest framing is narrower: which of these products burns your jar with a calm flame and a full pool.

Why Cotton Braided can't settle "type" on its own
Cotton Braided is braided where Eco is cotton-and-paper, and it is also described as "thick". If it fixes the tall flame and short pool, you can't say whether braid or size did it. That doesn't matter for buying: you have found a product that works. It matters only if you were hoping to learn a rule to carry to other jars, and that rule would need a full retest in each jar anyway.

The type-swap order: arms, counts and packs

One wick changes per arm. Everything else, down to the pour temperature, stays put.

Three candles per arm, as in every test in this cluster, plus a three-candle replicate of the winner from a second pour. The replicate count follows the confirm-plus-replicate rule. Costed at the worked example's 200 g fill, with Cinnamon Vanilla at the 100 g price (₹4.84 a gram) and CSI 464 at the 1 kg price.

Your jars — 9; 12 with a replicate your supplier yours — —

Stage 1 costs one wick pack, ₹120.00, if you have the oil and wax. All three arms plus a replicate, from nothing except your C2 and jars, come to ₹3,069.22. The wick is a small part of each candle (Cotton Braided is 6.6% of a ₹182.77 candle), so the real cost of every arm is three candles of a fairly expensive gourmand. Each candle's materials: C2 ₹180.21, Cotton Braided ₹182.77, roll-cut ₹177.84, all excluding the jar, labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Don't buy the roll first: it is the dearest pack (₹706.82) for the arm that is least likely to be needed. If Cotton Braided fixes the flame, the roll is 100 tabbed wicks you didn't need. If the braid arm loses after its three test wicks, about ₹685.62 of roll sits unused. Argued against our own interest: buy the ₹120.00 pack, test, and only then decide on the roll.

Why not the 500 g of Cinnamon Vanilla? It is ₹0.24 a gram cheaper than the 100 g, but a type-swap test needs 192 g at most. Two 100 g bottles cover it with 8 g to spare, and the 500 g belongs to production, after a construction has passed full life.

The roll, priced honestly: the tabs cap the yield

Sixty-one metres sounds like hundreds of wicks. One hundred tabs say otherwise.

The Braided Wick Roll is sold as 61 m of braided cotton with 100 wick tabs. Cut at 11 cm (jar height plus 2 cm, our judgement for a 9 cm tall jar; your cut depends on your fill height and trim allowance), 61 m would make 554 lengths. Only 100 of them can have a tab. The tabbed wicks use 11 m, 18% of the roll, and the other 50 m is untabbed wick. CSI lists no separate wick tabs in the catalogue data we captured, so that remainder needs tabs from elsewhere before it can stand in a container.

What the roll really costs per wick
CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · per-wick figures declared · cut length is a worked example
Way of counting Figure What it means
Per tabbed wick (the honest unit) ₹7.07 ₹706.82 ÷ 100 tabs, at any cut up to 61 cm
Per metre, ignoring the tabs ₹11.59 Only meaningful if you source tabs elsewhere
Against Eco C2 ₹2.37 less per candle Before your time to cut, fit tabs and prime
Against Cotton Braided ₹4.93 less per candle The same caveat

So the roll is the cheapest of the three per tabbed wick, provided you use all 100 tabs and count your own labour as free, which this page never does in its costs (they exclude labour). Two things the page doesn't tell you affect the test. First, whether the tabs come crimped on or loose: the page says "These are small metal tabs that are attached to one end of the wick", which reads like an instruction as much as a description. Second, whether the wick is pre-waxed. Many makers prime an untreated wick by dipping it in melted wax and letting it set straight (judgement), and a primed and an unprimed wick can burn differently; the untreated-versus-pre-waxed post covers that change. Ask us both questions on WhatsApp before you order, and prime all six roll wicks the same way.

Cutting and fitting six test wicks
Cut six lengths of exactly 11 cm, fit a tab to each, prime them the same way if the wick is unwaxed, and hang them straight to set. Label them C-1 to C-6. Keep the next 20 cm of roll as a retained sample: if production ever burns differently, you can compare against wick from the length you approved.

Pouring and reading the arms

The arms are only comparable if the candles are identical except for the wick.
1
One melt for every armWeigh the batch for six candles (stage 1) or nine (with the roll arm), mix Cinnamon Vanilla once at 8%, and pour every jar from that pot. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C".
2
Same height above the waxEvery wick, Eco, braided or roll-cut, trimmed to the same 5–6 mm before each burn. Check that Cotton Braided's stated 10.16 cm clears your fill line.
3
Burn side by side in still airSame room, same session length (about 3–4 hours for 8 cm, judgement), with labelled bases. Light them in a different order each session so no arm always gets the first hour of a cold room.
4
Log flame and pool togetherTrimmed flame height at one hour, ring width at four points at the end, pool depth, and carbon on the wick. The question is not just "which reaches the glass" but "which reaches it with a calm flame".
5
Screen at burn 3, replicate, full lifePour three more of the leading arm on another day, and approve only when all six burn to about 1 cm left with no flame, soot or heat failure in the final third. Judge glass heat by eye, never by touch.

Cotton Braided: calm flame, full pool; C2 still tall and short A product that works (type and size together) Replicate, then Cotton Braided for production

Roll-cut: calm flame, full pool A construction that suits this jar and oil Replicate, then rolls by the formula below
All three tall and short Probably not the wick: oil, load or jar No more wicks. Test the load within the ceiling or a second oil, or ask us
All three fine after a strict trim It was the trim Nothing, or a cutter (₹295.00)

If your flame problem came from changing wick brands rather than from a new jar, it has its own change-control checklist: the larger-flame-after-a-brand-change post. And whichever arm wins, the approval gate is the series rule in the 8 cm ladder hub: the full life on every candle.

If a different construction wins

A new construction is a new SKU. Price it per candle, and order it on the formula.

Once six candles of one arm pass the full life: wicks to buy = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with a 5% allowance as our worked example.

Production worked example · 150 candles a month · one wick per candle
Wicks = 150 × 1 × 1.05 · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · labour to cut and tab the roll excluded · all figures declared
Winning construction Wicks a month Cost at the per-wick price How to buy it
Cotton Braided 158 ₹1,896.00 100 + 50 + 10 = 160 wicks, ₹1,920.00
Braided roll, 11 cm cuts 158 ₹1,116.78 1.58 rolls a month, so two rolls (₹1,413.64) for 200 tabbed wicks
For comparison: Eco C2 158 ₹1,491.52 the wick that ran tall

The roll comes in one size, so production buys it in whole rolls of 100 tabbed wicks. At 158 wicks a month that is two rolls, with the spare tabbed wicks carried into the next month. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock: about 5.3 a day here, so with a 7-day lead time and five days of safety stock (your figures; CSI publishes no lead times or stock depth), reorder at about 63 wicks. For the roll, that means a reorder whenever the tabbed wicks you have cut fall below that figure, not the metres.

Don't stock all three constructions: once one passes, the others are test wicks, not inventory. Keep the leftover Cotton Braided and roll wicks as retained samples and for the next jar's test, and don't reorder the losers. Argued against our own interest: a range that standardises on one construction buys less from us, and burns more predictably for you.

The three constructions, the oil and the wax

wick · the cut-to-length braided arm
Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters)
The one CSI braid you can cut to your own length and still put on a tab. The page describes "a long spool of braided cotton wick, ideal for creating custom-sized wicks", says "You can cut the wick to the desired length for your specific candle container size", and lists "100 Wick Tabs: These are small metal tabs that are attached to one end of the wick." In the text we captured it does not say whether the tabs come crimped on or loose, whether the wick is pre-waxed, or the braid's size. The tabs cap the yield at 100 wicks, so the honest unit price is ₹7.07 per tabbed wick, not a price per metre. Argued against our own interest: it is a ₹706.82 purchase for a three-candle arm. Buy it only once the Cotton Braided arm has also shown a tall flame and a short pool.

Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The first arm to add, because it is both a different construction and the next rung up: the page describes a "thick, braided construction", "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", with "preventing tunneling" as its own claim. It states one dimension, "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm", about 10.16 cm, so check it clears your fill line in a 9 cm tall jar. Limitation: because it is thicker as well as braided, a better result on Cotton Braided can't tell you whether type or size did the work. It answers "which product burns this jar", which is the question you are buying for.

The oil this page is costed on. The page states "Up to 13% load for candles" and, in its FAQ, "Use a lower percentage (6-8%) for a more subtle warmth". CSI 464's page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", and the lower ceiling governs, so the most you can plan here is 10%, not 13%. 8% of total weight is 8.70% of wax weight. The page lists "Vanillin content 2.5%" and calls the oil "IFRA-certified" and "Phthalate-free"; those are the page's words, and documentation is on request on WhatsApp. Vanillin-rich gourmands are commonly linked to carbon on the wick and taller, sootier flames. That is a tendency, which is why the control arm stays in. Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026.

Gourmands for Diwali, 8 November 2026: spiced vanilla candles are where tall, sooty flames show up most. If a construction passes in October, send us your count and we will quote the wicks (or rolls), Cinnamon Vanilla and CSI 464 with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.
WhatsApp the type-swap order
The CSI principle
When the flame is tall and the pool is short, change the construction, not the size.
Trim first. Then C2 against Cotton Braided for ₹120.00, and the roll at ₹7.07 a tabbed wick only if both run tall. The tabs, not the metres, set what the roll is worth.
"A taller flame from a bigger wick is the same answer, louder. Ask a different wick the question."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, roll, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that we publish no construction specs, that our Cotton Braided can't isolate "type" from "size", that our roll's tabs cap its yield at 100, that the roll is the wrong first purchase, and that another supplier's numbered series may answer a type question more cleanly.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, such as the roll's tab fitting or priming, we say so.

The 11 cm cut, the tall-flame and 6 mm ring readings, the 8.0 cm by 9 cm jar, the 0.35 cm wall, the two-stage order, the 150-candle month and the 5% allowance are our judgement or worked examples. Flame heights, pool depths and session times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data, and CSI publishes no wick-performance data. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my candle flame so tall but not melting the edges?
Commonly an untrimmed or carbon-capped wick, a draught, or a heavy oil. If the flame is still tall after trimming to about 5–6 mm in still air, the wick's construction may not suit the jar, wax and oil, and a different construction is worth testing.
Should I use a bigger wick if my candle tunnels with a high flame?
Usually not first. A bigger version of the same wick tends to make the flame taller still. Test a different construction against your current wick, three candles each, and keep the size question for later.
What is the difference between cotton braided and eco candle wicks?
CSI's pages describe the Eco wicks as "natural fibers like cotton and paper" and Cotton Braided as a "thick, braided construction" for jars "exceeding 8 cm". Neither page gives braid counts or diameters, so compare them by burning both in your jar.
How many wicks can I make from a 61 m braided wick roll?
As many tabbed wicks as there are tabs: 100. At an 11 cm cut that uses 11 m and leaves 50 m untabbed. That works out to ₹7.07 per tabbed wick.
Do I need to prime braided wick from a roll?
CSI's roll page doesn't say whether the wick is pre-waxed. Many makers prime untreated wick by dipping it in melted wax and letting it set straight. Do the same to every test wick, and ask us on WhatsApp before you buy.
Does vanilla fragrance make the candle flame bigger?
Vanillin-rich and heavier oils are commonly linked to carbon on the wick and taller or sootier flames. It is a tendency, not a rule. Keep your current wick as a control so you can tell the oil's effect from the wick's.
Tall flame, short pool
Trim first, then test constructions: C2 against Cotton Braided for ₹120.00.
Three candles per arm, one melt, the same trim, the same room. Add the roll (₹7.07 per tabbed wick) only if Cotton Braided also runs tall, and approve on the full life. Ask us about the roll's tabs and priming before you buy it.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on wick symptoms → purchase decisions (5541–5560). It covers the free causes of a tall flame with a short pool, what "wick type" can mean in CSI's range, a two-stage type-swap order (Eco C2 control, Cotton Braided, then the Braided Wick Roll cut to a labelled length) with counts and rupees per arm, the roll's tab-capped yield, how to read the arms, and the production order if a different construction wins.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The 8.0 cm inside, 9 cm tall jar is the reader's (CSI lists no jar at 8 cm); the 8.7 cm outside figure uses a labelled 0.35 cm wall; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Cinnamon Vanilla up to 13%, its FAQ "of total wax weight"); the lower governs, and both are formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame height (about 2.5–5 cm), session length and pool-time figures are commonly cited rules of thumb. The 11 cm cut, the readings, the two-stage order, the 150-candle month, the lead time and the 5% allowance are worked examples and editorial judgement. Costs exclude jars, labour (including cutting, tabbing and priming), freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
