CSI Wick Diagnosis · Wooden Wick
A tall wooden flame is usually too much wood left standing, not too wide a strip. Trim it low in still air first. If it is still tall, the honest truth is that CSI sells one wooden width, so the next test is cotton, three candles to the end.

Eco C2 10-pack plus Cotton Braided 10-pack: both cotton arms for a jar over 8 cm · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle has a wooden wick and the flame is extremely tall. Should I test a narrower wick or a different thickness? First test the trim, because wood is commonly trimmed shorter than cotton. A wooden flame is usually low and broad, so an extremely tall one most often means too much exposed wood, a draught, a tilted or split wick, or wood too strong for the jar. Only the last needs a different wick.

What do I check first? Let the candle set, break or cut off the charred top so about 3 mm of wood stands above the wax (a commonly cited wooden-wick trim, labelled a rule of thumb), and burn four hours in still air. Back in your band: it was the trim. Still tall: keep reading.

Can I buy a narrower wooden wick from CSI? No. We sell one wooden-wick listing, Performance Wooden Wicks, with no width or thickness options, and the page states no dimensions. If the wood is too strong for your jar even trimmed low, the CSI options are cotton: Eco C2, then Cotton Braided (jars over 8 cm) or C1 (8 cm and under). For a narrower wooden wick, ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot get.

What does the test cost? Twelve candles: wood as now, wood trimmed low, and two cotton rungs, three each. The cotton wicks are ₹214.40 (C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10) or ₹212.40 (C2 10 + C1 20); the wooden arms use your own stock.
The short answer
The diagnosis: a tall wooden flame is usually too much exposed wood, then a draught or a seating fault, then wood too strong for the jar. Fragrance and load can add to it.
Check 1 (free): trim to about 3 mm (1/8 inch, a rule of thumb for wood), still air, four hours. Back in band: write the trim on your care card.
CSI's range, honestly: one wooden width, no thinner or narrower step. A "narrower wick" from us means cotton: C2, then Cotton Braided or C1.
The test: 12 candles of 200 g at 8%: wood normal trim, wood low trim, C2, and Cotton Braided or C1, three each, burned to the end, top, middle and bottom judged separately.
A tall wooden flame: trim first, then the wick Same candle, three exposed wood heights. Illustrative, not CSI test data. About 3 mm low, broad flame (wood trim) 5–6 mm taller, still steady (cotton-style trim) 10 mm or more tall, flickering, smoke (untrimmed) Trimmed to about 3 mm, in still air: is the flame back in your band? YES · keep the wood Write the trim on the care card. Test three candles, full life. NO · wood too strong here One CSI wooden width only. Test C2, then Cotton Braided or C1.
An illustrative side view of one wooden-wick candle at three exposed wood heights. Trimmed to about 3 mm, a wooden flame is commonly low and broad; at a cotton-style 5–6 mm it stands taller; left long, it climbs, flickers and smokes. The branch below is the decision this post is about: if the low trim in still air brings the flame back into your band, the wood can stay. If not, CSI has no narrower wooden wick to offer, so the next test is cotton. Shapes are drawn to show the pattern, not measured CSI data.
Straight answer
My candle uses a wooden wick and the flame is extremely tall. Should I test a narrower wick or a different thickness?
Test the trim before the wick, and know that at CSI there is no narrower or thinner wooden wick to step to. Wood behaves differently from cotton. A wooden wick doesn't curl or consume itself the way a braided cotton wick does; the flame sits on the charred top of the strip, and the more wood stands above the wax, the bigger the flame it supports. A trim that suits cotton can be too long for wood, so many makers trim wood to about 3 mm (a rule of thumb, not a CSI figure). So first: let the candle set, remove the char down to about 3 mm, and burn four hours in still air with the wick checked for tilt and splitting. If the flame comes back into your band, the wick is fine and the trim belongs on your care card. If it is still tall, with a deep pool and fast melt, the wood is too strong for this jar. Elsewhere you might test a narrower wooden width; at CSI there is one listing with no width options, so the honest next step is cotton: Eco C2, and Cotton Braided if your jar is wider than 8 cm inside, or C1 if it is narrower. Three candles per arm, burned to the end. An extremely tall, smoking flame is a reason to stop the burn first.
One line: trim the wood to about 3 mm in still air first (free); if it is still tall, CSI has no narrower wood, so test C2 and one more cotton rung beside it, three candles each, to the end.
The cotton arms, priced: Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) + Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) = ₹214.40 for jars over 8 cm; C2 10 + C1 20 = ₹212.40 for narrower jars. In stock on 7 October 2026; the C1 10-pack is not.
Eco C2 10-pack — ₹94.40

Why a wooden flame runs tall: what to look at

A wooden wick is a fuel ladder: every millimetre of wood above the wax is another rung for the flame to climb.

Your symptom, restated: the candle has a wooden wick, it lights, and the flame is extremely tall, taller than you want and taller than wooden flames usually look. You haven't said when it starts or whether it has been trimmed, so treat both as unknowns and check them. Many makers use about 2.5–5 cm as a practical flame-height band (a rule of thumb, not a standard). If yours climbs well above that, flickers, or throws a smoke trail, it is outside anybody's comfortable range.

Four things decide a wooden flame's height, and three of them have nothing to do with the width of the wick. Exposed wood. The flame burns on the charred top of the strip. Many braided cotton wicks curl and partly consume themselves as they burn; wood stands straight, so a long exposed length simply feeds a longer flame. Leftover char from the last burn adds to it. Airflow. A ceiling fan or AC vent makes any flame flicker taller and smoke, and a broad wooden flame catches a draught easily. Seating. A wooden wick pushed only partly into its clip, tilted, or split along its grain can burn unevenly, with one edge flaring. Wood strength for the jar. A wider or thicker strip supplies more fuel; if the jar's pool is deep and liquid quickly, the flame has plenty to draw on and grows.

That order matters because the first three are free to fix, and only the fourth is a wick-size problem. It is also why "narrower or thinner" is the right question asked too early: a strip that is too tall because it was never trimmed low will look too wide in every test.

Wood-specific things to log
Exposed wood in mm before each burn (ruler beside the wick, not touching it). Char length after the burn, before trimming. Crackle: steady, loud, or none. Self-extinguishing events (a drowning or very short wick commonly causes them: why a wooden wick goes out later in the burn). Seating: straight, fully in the clip, no split. Plus the usual flame height, pool depth and width, soot card and grams per session.
Safety first, plainly: an extremely tall wooden flame is a safety problem before it is a looks problem. Stop the burn, let the candle set completely, and trim before relighting. Never trim a lit wick or pick char out of a liquid pool. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer at marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax), and treat a flame leaning towards the glass as a stop. No wick, wooden or cotton, makes a candle "safe" or "soot-free", and nobody should promise you one.

Causes ranked: how it's burned versus how it's made

Two causes live in the room and the trim. Three live in the candle. Rule out the first two for nothing.

The ranking is our judgement for a wooden wick with an extremely tall flame, ordered so the free checks come first.

Cause ranking · wooden wick, extremely tall flame
Ranked by likelihood and cost to test (judgement) · signs are common observations, not CSI burn data · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Too much exposed wood (burning: trimming) Tall flame from lighting; old char on the tip; loud crackle; worse after a long previous burn Set candle, char removed, about 3 mm of wood, relight in still air A low trim before every burn, written on the care card Nothing, or a cutter from ₹177.00
2. Draught (burning: room) Flicker, lean, soot streak on one side, one-sided pool; worse with fan or AC on Same candle, same trim, fans and AC off, away from vents Placement; a line on the care card Nothing
3. Seating, tilt or split (making: placement) One edge flaring; flame leaning; pool melting one side first Inspect a spare wick in its clip; cut a test candle open after setting Seat the strip fully, hold it upright while the wax sets Nothing; holders from ₹118.00
4. Wood too strong for the jar (making: wick size) Still tall at a low trim in still air; full pool fast; pool deeper than about 1–1.5 cm (rule of thumb); warm glass high up Low-trim wood beside C2 and a second cotton rung, three candles each No narrower CSI wood: move this jar to cotton, or ask us ₹214.40 or ₹212.40
5. Heavy oil or high load (making: formula) Taller, sootier flame in one scent than another on the same wood Same wood and jar, a lighter oil or unscented control A per-fragrance wick, or a load tested within both ceilings Your own lighter oil

Cause 1 deserves the top spot for wood in particular. Care cards written for cotton say "trim to 1/4 inch" (our trimmer page says it too, about 6 mm), and that is often too long for a wooden strip. Cause 3 is easy to miss: the Wick Centering Device has a single 4 mm hole ("Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)") sized for round cotton wicks, so measure your wooden strip before assuming it fits; the Steel Wick Holder says to "insert the wick(s) in the slots" but states no slot size. Cause 5 is a tendency, not CSI data: heavier or resinous oils commonly change how a wick burns (fine with lavender, huge with vanilla covers it). If your flame grows over the hours rather than starting tall, that pattern belongs to the hour-three hub.

Narrower or thinner: what CSI can and cannot offer

Wooden wicks are commonly sold by width. We sell one width. That is the honest start of this section.

Wooden wicks from makers who sell a range commonly come in several widths, and sometimes in different thicknesses or with a thin booster strip laminated to the wood, so the classic fix for a flame that is too big is a narrower strip from the same range. You can't do that with CSI: Performance Wooden Wicks is one listing with no width options, and in the text we captured the page states no width, thickness or length and mentions no booster. If your current wood came from another supplier, our wick is not a known step narrower either; it is simply a different wick. Measure both with a ruler before comparing them, and treat a switch as a formula change (what to retest when you change wick type).

Your options for a tall wooden flame, honestly ranked
Judgement · costs are CSI live pricing on 7 October 2026 · no option is a promised fix: each is a test arm

Trim lower (about 3 mm) Fuel above the wax; the flame's starting height Yes: a cutter, or your scissors Usually, if the flame is not starved Nothing, or ₹177.00
Re-seat and centre the strip Even burn across the width Yes: holders and stickers Yes Nothing, or from ₹100.00 (40 stickers)
A narrower or thinner wooden wick Fuel supply at any trim No: one width only; ask us Yes —
Shave or split the strip narrower yourself Fuel supply, unevenly Not a product; not repeatable Unpredictable Not recommended for production (judgement)
Cotton: Eco C2 A different flame, typically taller and narrower than a well-trimmed wood flame Yes, ₹9.44 a wick No ₹94.40 (10-pack)
Cotton: Cotton Braided (over 8 cm) or C1 (8 cm and under) The second cotton rung Yes, ₹12.00 / ₹5.90 a wick No ₹120.00 / ₹118.00

Argued against our own interest: we would rather tell you we stock one wooden width than sell you a 50-pack that cannot fix an over-wicked jar. If the low trim works, you need nothing from us. If it doesn't and the crackle matters to your customers, message us on WhatsApp before moving to cotton; we will say plainly whether we can source a narrower wooden wick, and if we can't, we will say that too. The full comparison of wood and cotton as complete systems (pool, heat, throw, relighting, cost per candle) is 6953's job; here, cotton is a test arm.

Don't do this: don't buy a "thinner" wooden wick by guesswork. Without stated widths on either wick, you can't know it is thinner, and you change two variables at once. Don't solve a tall flame by asking customers to trim to 3 mm unless your test shows the candle passes at the trim a customer will actually manage: one cut before lighting, if that. Don't shave wooden wicks narrower for production: each one ends up different. And don't drop to a much smaller cotton wick in a wide jar without a full-life test: a wick that tames the flame can tunnel instead (why simply wicking down can backfire).

The twelve-candle test: wood low, wood as now, two cotton rungs

Four arms, three candles each, one variable per arm. The trim gets its own arm because it is the cheapest answer.

The worked example, labelled: your candle is the series default 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight) in your own jar, here poured with Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (page: "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C", "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C", "Fragrance Load Up to 13%"). Keep your own wax if your problem candles use another. Measure the jar's inside diameter at the fill line before you choose the fourth arm.

1
Pour twelve candles that differ only in the wickOne wax lot, one oil lot, weighed fills, the wax page's pour temperature, poured the same day. Seat every wooden strip fully in its clip and hold it upright while the wax sets; centre the cotton wicks. Label the bases A1–3, B1–3, C1–3, D1–3.
2
Assign the four armsA: your wooden wick trimmed as you trim it now (the control). B: the same wood trimmed to about 3 mm before every burn. C: Eco C2 trimmed to 5–6 mm. D: Cotton Braided if the jar is wider than 8 cm inside, or C1 if it is 8 cm or less. 12 candles in total.
3
Cure togetherMany CSI oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy (Palo Santo's does); many makers also test at day 7. Compare candles of the same age.
4
Burn 4-hour sessions in still air, logging at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hFlame height, pool depth (a skewer midway between wick and glass) and width, crackle, a soot card, and grams lost (weigh before and after, once set). For wood, also log exposed wood before lighting and char length after. Stop and record a fail if a flame smokes continuously or leans towards the glass.
5
Burn to the end, judging each thirdMark the jar into top, middle and bottom thirds and stop at about 1 cm of wax left (a common rule of thumb). Wooden wicks commonly behave differently as the pool deepens lower down, so a pass on the top third is not a pass. For an 8 cm jar, a session is valid at about 3.1 hours or more (the one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule of thumb); four hours covers it.
6
Decide with the rule you wrote before burn oneIf B passes, keep wood and put the trim on the care card. If B fails but C or D passes, the wood is too strong for this jar. If C tunnels and D runs tall, the jar sits between our rungs: a pair of smaller wicks, a formula change, or a WhatsApp question.
The log sheet · per candle, per session
Limits are an in-house protocol you set and write down before you start, not industry standards · the flame band, trims and pool depth are rules of thumb
Measure How When Suggested starting limit (yours to set)
Exposed wood / cotton Ruler beside the wick Before lighting As the arm specifies: about 3 mm (B), 5–6 mm (C, D), your usual (A)
Flame height Ruler behind, photo level with the flame 1, 2, 3, 4 h Inside your band (2.5–5 cm is a common starting point)
Smoke Watch 30 seconds; white card 1, 2, 3, 4 h No visible trail; card no worse than your reference
Pool depth and width Skewer midway; photo Each hour No deeper than about 1.5 cm; reaches the glass from burn two
Char / mushroom Photo beside a ruler After the session A length or width you fix from round one
Crackle and relight Note it Each session Your own call: relights without help; no self-extinguishing
Grams per hour Weigh before and after, once set Each session Steady; a sharp rise lower down is a warning
Glass Your own non-contact thermometer, marked points 4 h, each third Your own written limit; flame never near the wall
The approval rule (ours, labelled)
An arm passes when all three candles meet every limit you wrote down, in the top, middle and bottom thirds, at 4-hour sessions in still air, at the trim the arm specifies and no other. One tall, smoking session or one hot-glass reading in any candle fails the arm. For arm B, add one honest extra: light one spare candle with the trim a careless customer might leave (your usual cotton-style trim) and record what happens, because that is what the candle will meet in real homes. This is an in-house protocol, not an industry standard. The method for wooden wicks in more depth is how to test whether wooden wicks burn as reliably as cotton.

Buying for the test, and the step to production

Our wick range is short, and for wood it is one wick long. Buy accordingly.

CSI's sized, tabbed cotton wicks are three rungs, C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, with nothing tabbed between them and nothing smaller than C1. For wood there is one listing and no step at all. So a "narrower wick" from CSI is always a cotton rung, and the test above uses the two that fit your jar.

Argued against our own interest: if your wax, oil and jars are already on the shelf, the test is ₹214.40 in cotton wicks, and if arm B passes you have spent nothing that matters. The 5 kg of CSI 468 (₹3,185.00) would be a 2% per-kg saving on wax you don't yet know you need; the 2.5 kg covers the test. If you have no wooden wicks left for arms A and B, the 10-pack adds ₹590.00, ₹804.40 with both cotton packs.

The step to production quantity

Once an arm passes on three full-life candles, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 120 candles a month with a 3% allowance is 124 wicks. If C2 passes, 100 + 20 + 10 = 130 C2 cost ₹1,227.20. If Cotton Braided passes, 100 + 3 × 10 = 130 cost ₹1,560.00. If the low-trimmed wood passes, the cheapest way to 130 wooden wicks is a 100-pack and three 10-packs, ₹5,900.00 (₹45.38 a wick; 100 + 50 = 150 would be ₹6,490.00). That month of wood costs ₹4,672.80 more than the same month in C2: a real number to weigh against the crackle and the look, and the subject of the wood-versus-cotton systems post. CSI publishes no lead times, so confirm yours on WhatsApp before you set a reorder point.

Don't buy the 100-pack after one good evening. A wooden wick that behaves at the top of the jar can drown or flare lower down. The wooden 100-pack is ₹4,130.00 and the Cotton Braided 1,000-pack ₹12,000.00; neither is a test purchase. Pass three candles to the end at the trim you will print, then buy by the month. A later change of wooden-wick lot or supplier is a formula change: compare old and new side by side first (why similar wicks from a new supplier can burn differently).
Christmas is 25 December 2026, 79 days from 7 October 2026. Wooden-wick candles are a popular winter gift, and a twelve-candle, full-life test fits comfortably before a festive batch if you pour this month. When an arm passes, send us your wick and wax quantities on WhatsApp so we can confirm stock and dispatch, with a GST invoice.

Performance Wooden Wicks | Imported
Your question is whether to test a narrower or thinner wooden wick. At CSI the honest answer is that there isn't one to test: this is our only wooden-wick listing, sold in packs of 10, 50 and 100, and in the text we captured the page states no width, thickness or length, and mentions no booster. It says the wicks are "made from thin strips of wood", that "One Pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs", and claims they "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot" and "can burn for longer". Those are the page's claims, and an extremely tall flame shows they depend on the jar and the trim. Argued against our own interest: if the low-trim arm fails, buying more of these will not fix your jar. It is the only tabbed wick here that gets cheaper in bulk (₹59.00 → ₹41.30 a wick; the 50-pack's "Save 25%" is really 20%).

Eco Candle Wicks — Thick (C2) and Thin (C1)
If the wood is too strong for your jar even trimmed low, C2 is the cotton rung to test first, and C1 the second if your jar is 8 cm or narrower inside. In the text we captured, the page states no length, width or jar-diameter range for either, so your burn log decides. The page claims "minimal soot or smoke": only true of a wick sized and trimmed for its jar. C2 costs ₹9.44 and C1 ₹5.90 a wick at every pack. Limitation: C2 burns with a different flame shape and no crackle; if the crackle is the reason your customers buy, that trade-off is a product decision, not a wick fault. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
Wooden wicks often go into wide jars, and a wide jar may need more than C2. The page says Cotton Braided is "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", claims "optimal flame height, preventing tunneling" and gives "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm". Take that as one bracket rung, not a rule: if your jar is wider than 8 cm inside, test it beside C2; if it is 8 cm or less, the page's own positioning puts it above your jar and C1 is the second cotton arm instead. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: nothing tabbed sits between C2 and Cotton Braided, so if C2 tunnels and Cotton Braided runs tall, the next step is a pair of smaller wicks (the double-wick post), not a half-size.

Candle Wick Cutter | Candle Wick Trimmer
A wooden wick is trimmed by cutting or breaking off the charred top when the candle is cool. Fingers and scissors struggle to get a clean, level cut at about 3 mm inside a jar; a cutter does it repeatably. CSI lists two Candle Wick Cutters (3 cm and 5.5 cm blades) and a Candle Wick Trimmer whose page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn", a cotton-style figure (about 6 mm), and "Perfect Length: Ensures optimal flame height" (the page's claim). For wood, many makers go lower than that. Argued against our own interest: if the low trim fixes your flame, this ₹177.00 cutter is the whole purchase, and the dearest trimmer adds nothing to the test.
Listing Price Stock Why

Candle Wick Trimmer, debris catcher ₹588.82 In stock page: "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn" (a cotton figure)

fragrance oil · woody · a page that names both systems
Palo Santo Fragrance Oil
Only if you are choosing an oil for a new wooden-wick candle: your problem candle's own oil is the one to test. We show it because its page names both systems: "Wick Recommendations: Eco wicks or wooden wicks for an even, clean burn. Wick testing is recommended based on your container and wax type." It states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax", so 8% sits inside it and inside CSI 468's "Up to 13%" (the lower ceiling governs: 10%), "Vanillin Content: 0%" (the page's claim; test anyway) and a 48–72 hour cure for soy. Argued against our own interest: it is priced flat at ₹6.02 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so the 1 kg saves nothing per gram; buy the 50 g for three candles.
Size Price Per gram 200 g candles at 8% (16 g)
15 g ₹106.20 ₹7.08 none (a sniff sample)
50 g ₹300.90 ₹6.02 3
100 g ₹601.80 ₹6.02 6
500 g ₹3,009.00 ₹6.02 31
1 kg ₹6,018.00 ₹6.02 62
50 g covers three 16 g candles with 2 g spare. Buy 50 g — ₹300.90

Skip for now: a wooden 50- or 100-pack before arm B has passed the bottom third; any "thinner" wooden wick from anyone whose page states no width; a new oil while the wick is unresolved; and the Cotton Braided arm if your jar is 8 cm or narrower inside. If you love the wood but your jar is wide, two wooden wicks is a different design question: moving a working jar to wooden wicks sets out what has to be retested.

The CSI principle
A wooden flame is set by how much wood you leave standing. Trim it low and still the air before you shop for a narrower wick, because from us there isn't one.
For an extremely tall wooden flame: about 3 mm of wood, four hours in still air, then three candles each of wood-low, C2 and one more cotton rung, to the end. The cotton arms cost ₹214.40 or ₹212.40.
"With wood, the first wick to change is the length of the one you already have."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wooden and cotton wicks, wax, oil and cutters named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that we sell only one wooden width, that the first fix is a free trim, that our wooden page states no dimensions, and that a bigger wooden pack will not fix a jar the wood is too strong for.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the wooden page's claims of cleaner, longer burning, the Eco page's "minimal soot or smoke", the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" and the trimmer page's "1/4 inch".

The 3 mm wooden trim, the 5–6 mm cotton trim, the 2.5–5 cm flame band, the 1–1.5 cm pool depth, the 1 cm wax floor and the hour-per-2.5 cm guide are common rules of thumb. The 120-a-month order and 3% allowance are labelled examples; the diagram is illustrative. Fragrance effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. Frequently asked questions

Why is my wooden wick flame so big?
Most often too much exposed wood or old char, then a draught or a tilted, split or loosely seated wick. If it stays tall after a low trim in still air, the wood is likely too strong for the jar.
How short should I trim a wooden wick?
Many makers trim wooden wicks to about 3 mm (1/8 inch), shorter than the 5–6 mm common for cotton. That is a rule of thumb: confirm it with your own burn test and print what passed.
Does CSI sell wooden wicks in different widths?
No. Performance Wooden Wicks is one listing, in packs of 10, 50 and 100, with no width or thickness options, and the page states no dimensions. For a narrower wooden wick, ask us on WhatsApp.
Should I switch from a wooden wick to a cotton wick?
Only if a low trim in still air doesn't fix the flame. Then test Eco C2, and Cotton Braided (jars over 8 cm) or C1 (8 cm and under), three candles each, burned to the end.
Can I cut a wooden wick narrower?
Some makers try it, but each wick ends up different, so it is not a repeatable production method. Change to a wick with a known size, or to cotton, and test that.
Why does my wooden wick crackle loudly and smoke?
Commonly a long exposed length, leftover char or a draught. Let it set, trim to about 3 mm, burn in still air, and log flame height and a soot card.
Wooden wick, extremely tall flame
Trim the wood low in still air first; if it is still tall, test cotton beside it, because CSI has no narrower wood.
The cotton arms cost ₹214.40 for jars over 8 cm or ₹212.40 for narrower ones. If you want to keep the crackle, tell us your jar on WhatsApp, and we will say plainly what we can supply, and what we can't.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster "Flame Is Too Large" (6901–6920) in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It covers an extremely tall flame on a wooden wick: why wood runs tall, a cause-ranking table, what CSI can and cannot offer in place of a narrower or thinner wooden wick, a twelve-candle test with an in-house approval rule, a CSI buy list and production step.

Non-price figures: "wooden wick" and "extremely tall" are the reader's description (title); the reader gave no flame height, so none is assumed. The 200 g test candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight) is the series default, labelled. Wax and oil ceilings as their pages state them (CSI 468 up to 13%; Palo Santo up to 10% for soy; the lower governs): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. The 3 mm wooden trim (1/8 inch), the 5–6 mm cotton trim, the 2.5–5 cm flame band, the 1–1.5 cm pool depth, the 1 cm wax floor and about one hour per 2.5 cm of diameter (8 cm ≈ 3.1 h) are common rules of thumb. The 120 candles a month and 3% allowance are labelled worked examples; the diagram is illustrative. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Christmas 25 December 2026 is a calendar fact.
