My Current Cotton Wick Produces a Perfect Melt Pool but Excessive Soot — What Alternative Wick Characteristics Should I Test?
Share
Which characteristic is most likely to help? For a wide jar, two thinner wicks commonly make less soot than one thick one while still reaching the glass (a tendency, not CSI data). One rung thinner on its own usually costs you the pool, and a wick that loses the pool fails however clean it burns.
What about coating or core? They matter on wicks generally, but no CSI wick page states a coating or core in the text we captured, so you can't choose them from our list. The Braided Wick Roll is the one wick whose priming you decide yourself.
What do I buy? Eco C2 10 (₹94.40), Performance Wooden Wicks 10 (₹590.00) and the Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82): ₹1,391.22, beside three candles of your current wick.

Your candle, described precisely
The situation, in this page's terms. Your wick is cotton: at CSI, most likely Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, whose page positions it for "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". The pool is perfect: it reaches the glass by about hour three to four of each full session, sits roughly 0.5–1 cm deep (common rules of thumb), and leaves no collar as the candle goes down. The soot is excessive: a smoke trail you can see in still air, a grey card held briefly above the flame, a dark band forming inside the rim over a few sessions. Because no title figures are given for the candle, we use a labelled worked example for a wide jar: 300 g at 8% = 24 g fragrance + 276 g wax in a jar measuring 9.0 cm inside, pool area 63.62 cm². Use your own fill and diameter.
Three details change everything, so note them. When does the soot start? If it is from hour one, the flame is oversized for its fuel from the start; if it builds by hour three, a carbon cap or a deepening pool is involved (the flame-growth hub). Where is the soot? All round the rim points at the flame itself; one side points at a draught. Which oil? Heavy woods, ouds, vanillas and dark gourmands commonly build more carbon than citrus or light florals, a tendency, not CSI data.
Why a perfect pool can still soot
A wick does two things at once. It delivers heat to the wax, which sets how wide and deep the pool gets. And it feeds liquid wax and fragrance up to the flame, where it has to burn completely, which depends on how much fuel arrives, how much air reaches it, and how the flame is shaped. A single thick wick in a wide jar can be exactly right on the first job and too much on the second: its large flame melts to the glass on time, but it draws more fuel than the flame can burn in the air available, and the excess leaves as soot.
That is why the obvious move (one size thinner) so often fails here. A thinner wick feeds less fuel, so it soots less, but it also delivers less heat, and in a 9.0 cm jar the pool stops short of the glass. Splitting the job is the classic way round it: two thinner wicks, each with a smaller, cleaner flame, sharing the heat across the pool. Changing material or braid changes how the wick draws and how its tip curls and burns away, which can change the soot without changing the heat much. Whether any of these work in your jar is the test's job; these are common observations, not CSI burn data. Why one large wick can soot more than two smaller ones has the 9 cm version in depth.
Soot over a perfect pool: causes, ranked
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Long wick or carbon cap (user) | Soot worst late in a session, a glowing cap, clean after a trim | Trim to 5–6 mm, remove the cap, 4 h in still air | Trim before every burn | Nothing, or a cutter from ₹177.00 |
| 2. Draught (user) | Flicker, soot on one side of the rim | Fans and AC off, away from vents | Placement; care label | Nothing |
| 3. Sessions longer than four hours (user) | Clean for four hours, sooty after | Cap test sessions at 4 h | Burn-time line on the label | Nothing |
| 4. One thick flame for its air (formulation: wick count) | Pool right, flame tall and wide, soot all round | C2 pair beside your current wick | Two thinner wicks | ₹94.40 + holder ₹250.00 |
| 5. Construction or material (formulation: wick) | Tip curls little or caps heavily; soot persists after 1–4 | Wood and braided roll arms | Another construction | ₹590.00 + ₹706.82 |
| 6. Heavy oil or load (formulation) | Clean in a light oil, sooty in oud or vanilla | Same wick, light oil or one point less load | Per-fragrance spec or less load | Your oil |
| 7. Dye (formulation) | Worse in the coloured version | Undyed against dyed | Less dye | Nothing |
| 8. Deep headspace or narrow opening (jar) | Flicker and soot once the wax is low in a tall jar | Compare thirds; soot growing as the level drops | Jar choice or a wax floor | Your jar |
Causes 6 and 7 aren't wick characteristics, but they can produce exactly your pattern; soot after raising the load and the construction-or-formula post cover that side. Cause 8 is a tendency worth a note: as the wax falls in a tall jar the flame sits deeper below the rim, and many makers see more flicker there. It shows up as soot that grows through the thirds, which your section log will catch. Rim soot in general, and how to separate wick, load and burn length, is the rim-soot post's ground.
Seven characteristics, and what each risks
Here is everything that distinguishes one wick from another, whether you can vary it with what CSI sells, and how likely it is to cost you the pool. "Pool risk" is our judgement for a perfect pool in a wide jar.
| Characteristic | What it changes | How to vary it at CSI | Pool risk | Arm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exposed length (trim) | Flame size and fuel drawn | Trim to 5–6 mm every session; one trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn" | None at the right length | All arms |
| Count | One big flame or two smaller ones | Two Eco C2 in place of one Cotton Braided (₹18.88 a candle) | Low in a wide jar; watch the centre and glass for heat | B |
| Material | How the wick draws and burns away | Performance Wooden Wicks; one width (₹59.00 in 10s) | Unknown: one width only | C |
| Braid construction | Draw, tip curl, carbon build-up | Braided Wick Roll (no braid size stated), or Eco Braided by the metre | Unknown | D |
| Thickness, one rung | Heat and fuel together | Cotton Braided → C2 single | High: usually loses the pool | Screen only |
| Coating or priming | How the wick lights and draws early | Not stated on any CSI wick page; you control it only on the roll | Small, unknown | D (method recorded) |
| Core | Stiffness and standing | Not stated on any CSI wick page | Can't be chosen from our list | — |
| Standing height and tab | Where the flame ends; how much wick to trim | Cotton Braided page: "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; the roll is cut to your length | End of life, not the pool | Record it |
We keep writing "not stated" because it is true, and it matters: we can't tell you the coating or core of our wicks from our own listings, so we won't suggest you choose a CSI wick for its coating. If coating or core is the characteristic you need to change, that is a reason to ask us on WhatsApp what we know, and, honestly, possibly a reason to look at a supplier who specifies it. For why a "pre-waxed" wick can burn differently from an untreated one, see the pre-waxed wick post.
The pool-locked test: four arms, two gates
Four arms, three candles each, one characteristic changed per arm, all poured the same day from one oil lot. The control is your current wick: without it you can't tell a cleaner candidate from a cleaner day. The thickness question gets a single screening candle from the spare C2s rather than a full arm, because it is the characteristic most likely to fail gate one.
| Arm | Wick | Characteristic changed | Candles | Holder |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Cotton Braided (current) | None: the control | 3 | Centring device |
| B | Two Eco C2, 4.5 cm apart | Count | 3 | Steel Wick Holder |
| C | Performance Wooden Wick | Material | 3 | Centring device (check the slot fits) |
| D | Braided Wick Roll, your cut length | Construction and priming | 3 | Centring device |
| Screen | One Eco C2 | Thickness | 1 (from spares) | Centring device |
| Item | Need | Buy | ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (or yours) | 3,312 g + the screen candle from spare | 3 × 1 kg + 500 g (188 g spare) | ₹1,782.20 |
| Eco C2 | 7 | 10-pack (3 spare) | ₹94.40 |
| Wooden | 3 | Pack of 10 | ₹590.00 |
| Braided roll | 3 cut wicks | 61 m + 100 tabs | ₹706.82 |
| Holders | 3 pair, 9 single | Steel Wick Holder 5 + Wick Centering Device × 2 | ₹486.00 |
| Kit total | wax + wicks + holders | ₹3,659.42 | |
| Oil, only if bought | 288 g | Woody Oud 3 × 100 g (12 g spare) | ₹1,359.36 (kit with oil ₹5,018.78) |
The screen candle needs another 276 g of wax and 24 g of oil; the 188 g of spare wax isn't quite enough, so pour it from your own stock or take the 5 kg wax pack (₹2,537.00) instead of 3.5 kg if you'd rather have headroom. The oil is the tight line: three 100 g bottles cover the twelve arm candles with 12 g to spare, so the screen's oil comes from your own bottle.
The CSI buy list and the step to production
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, with no sized, tabbed wick between them and one wooden width. For a perfect pool with soot on Cotton Braided, the characteristics you can buy are count (C2 pairs), material (wood) and construction (the roll). If your soot is on C2 in a narrower jar, the same logic runs one rung down: a C1 pair, wood, the roll.
| Current wick, perfect pool, soot | Arms | Buy | ₹ | Per wick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided (wide jar) | C2 pair, wood, roll | C2 10 + wooden 10 + roll | ₹1,391.22 | ₹9.44 / ₹59.00 / ₹7.07 a tab |
| Eco C2 (narrower jar) | C1 pair, wood, roll | C1 20 + wooden 10 + roll | ₹1,414.82 | ₹5.90 / ₹59.00 / ₹7.07 |
| Wooden | C2, Cotton Braided | C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 | ₹214.40 | ₹9.44 / ₹12.00 |
Argued against our own interest: rule out causes 1–3 before you order any of this. If a 5–6 mm trim in still air with 4-hour sessions cleans your candle, the whole list is unnecessary, and if the C2 pair passes, you never need the 100-pack of wood that would earn us the most.
The step to production quantity
Production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 150 candles a month at 2%. If the C2 pair wins: 306 wicks, bought as 3 × 100 + 10 = 310 for ₹2,926.40. If wood wins: 153 wicks, bought as 100 + 50 + 10 = 160 for ₹7,080.00. For comparison, 160 of your current Cotton Braided cost ₹1,920.00. Safety stock, lead time and what is on hand belong in the purchase-quantity formula; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. A pair means two wicks per candle in every reorder, which is easy to forget; write it into the master formula.

Skip for now: a full arm of single C2 (screen it on one candle); Eco Braided by the metre unless the roll arm shows braid construction matters; a 500 g oil pack for a test; and any 100-pack before approval. Buying every construction at once is the sampling post's question, and how many arms to run side by side is the candidate-count post's.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, holders, wax and oil named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that our wick pages don't state coating or core, that our range has no half-sizes and one wooden width, and that a free trim-and-airflow check may make every purchase here unnecessary.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not offered; every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Eco page's "natural fibers like cotton and paper" and "minimal soot or smoke", the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" and "10.16 cm", and the wooden wick page's "less smoke and soot".
The 9 cm jar, 300 g fill, 4.5 cm spacing, 0–3 soot scale, 9 g/h, 150 candles a month and 2% allowance are labelled worked examples; the characteristic ranking and pool-risk column are our judgement. Non-price figures: "perfect melt pool" and "excessive soot" are the reader's results (title). The 9 cm inside jar and 300 g fill at 8% (24 g oil + 276 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight) are a labelled worked example. Wax ceiling as the page states (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%), a formulation limit, not a regulatory one; Woody Oud's page states "candles (6-10%)". Trim 5–6 mm, pool depth about 0.5–1 cm, flame band about 2.5–5 cm, the 1 cm wax floor and about one hour per 2.5 cm of diameter (9 cm ≈ 3.5 h) are common rules of thumb. Pool areas are π r²; spacing is a starting point, not a prediction. Diagram positions are illustrative. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
