Ten per cent is a serious load: 20 g of oil in a 200 g candle, and depending on which oil you bought, between ₹56.64 and ₹162.06 of fragrance in every unit. The reason the candle is quiet is almost never that the number is too small. This guide works through the seven explanations that are still open, cheapest test first.

Quick answers — read this first
Is 10% too low? Almost certainly not. 10% is the maximum load stated on the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page and the recommended figure on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page — and it is at or above the top of the stated candle band on several CSI oil pages. At 10%, load is a constant in your recipe, not a dial.
What should I check first? That your 10% is really 10%: oil weighed rather than measured, taken as a share of the finished candle, added inside your wax page's stated band and stirred for a timed two minutes.
And after that?Cure, then the melt pool, then the wax, then the vessel and the room. The oil last, and only in a controlled two-jar comparison. Four of those checks need nothing but a calendar and a ruler.
Should I push to 12% or 13%? Only if the wax page states it. Chunks state 8–13% and CSI 468 up to 13%; CSI 464 states up to 10%, so on that wax there is nothing above you. It is also the dearest change here: ₹31.33 more per candle on Lavender, ₹3,132.60 per hundred.
The short answer
Being at 10% eliminates one suspect out of eight: "not enough oil in the jar". It does not touch cure, wick, pool area, add temperature, stirring, wax choice, vessel size, room size or the nose that judged it.
Audit the number before you change anything: 20 g of oil stirred into 200 g of wax is a 220 g candle at 9.09%, not 10%. For a true 10% you want 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax.
Then buy one test, not one bottle: four 120 g jars — same oil, same wax, same load, two wick sizes, burned at day 7 and day 21 — cost ₹738.86 and name the cause. A fresh kilo of oil costs four to eleven times that and names nothing.
A 10% load is not a timid decision. On Lavender it puts ₹104.42 of oil into one 200 g candle and on White Royal Oud ₹162.06, before wax, jar or wick. That is why "add more oil" is the wrong first move: fragrance is already the biggest line in the candle, and whatever is failing sits somewhere the money has not reached.
I am already pouring at 10%. Why is the candle still quiet when it burns, and what do I do next?
Because at 10% you have finished with the only variable most makers ever adjust, and the candle has seven others. Start by proving the number: 20 g of oil in a 200 g candle is 10%, but 20 g stirred into 200 g of wax is a 220 g candle at 9.09% — and oil measured in millilitres rather than weighed on a ₹354 scale is not a known quantity at all. Then check what decides how much of those 20 g reach the room. Cure: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing; 14–21 days is standard practice for soy containers. Add temperature and stir: Chunks state 80–90°C, Eco Soy CSI 400 states 85°C and two timed minutes. The melt pool: fragrance leaves from the pool's surface, so a wick that never opens the pool to the glass is a throw problem wearing a fragrance costume — Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 and ₹9.44 each test two sizes for under ₹50. The wax: CSI 464 states up to 10%, so you are at its ceiling; Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%. And the oil's own page: several CSI oils state a candle band that stops at or below 10%. Four 120 g jars — two wick sizes, two burn dates — cost ₹738.86 and name which of these it is.
One line: prove the 10% is real, then spend ₹738.86 on four jars that change one thing at a time — not ₹3,000 on another kilo of oil.
The cheapest paid step on this page is a second wick size. Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 (Thin C1) and ₹9.44 (Thick C2) each, flat per wick across every listed pack, or Performance Wooden Wicks from ₹41.30 each in the 100-pack if you want a wider pool and a visible flame.
There are eight honest explanations for a quiet candle. Your 10% disposes of one of them. It is worth knowing which.
Fragrance load is the share of the finished candle that is fragrance oil. At 10%, a 200 g candle is 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax; a 120 g jar is 12 g and 108 g. Those are not small doses. On Lavender Fragrance Oil at the listed 1 kg price of ₹5,221, twenty grams is ₹104.42 — almost exactly the ₹107.82 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks beside it, and more than twice the jar. You are not under-dosing; you are mis-attributing. So the useful move is subtraction: list every explanation for a quiet candle, then strike out the ones your 10% has already answered.

The mistake: treating "10%" as a verdict on the oil. A maker at 10% who is disappointed usually concludes the oil is weak and orders a different one. That decision costs a bottle, a pour, a cure and a burn — six weeks at a proper 21-day cure — and it answers nothing, because other variables moved with it. Is your 10% actually 10%? The four-way audit
This is the free check, and it catches more quiet candles than any other single step. There are four common ways a recipe that says 10% is not pouring 10%, and every one of them is arithmetic or habit rather than chemistry. Do it with the batch sheet in front of you, not from memory.

Check the denominatorLoad in this series — and in most commercial recipe sheets — is oil ÷ (wax + oil) × 100, a share of the finished candle. So a true 10% in a 200 g candle is 20 g of oil with 180 g of wax. If you weighed out 200 g of wax and then added 20 g of oil, your candle is 220 g and the load is 9.09%. Working from a kilo of wax, 10% of the finished candle needs 111.1 g of oil, not 100 g. Note that some pages phrase their figure differently: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states "8% to 13% of total wax weight". Pick one convention, write it on the sheet, and use it every time.

Check you weighed rather than measuredFragrance load is a weight percentage, and fragrance oils do not all have the same density, so millilitres are not interchangeable with grams from one oil to the next. If your 10% came out of a measuring cup or a squeeze of the bottle, it is an estimate wearing a percentage sign. Check the add temperature against your own wax pageNot against a rule of thumb. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C with a pour at 70–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 states adding at 85°C and stirring gently for two minutes. CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C — an entirely different working range, which catches makers who switch wax without changing their thermometer habit. Check the stir, by the clockTwo full timed minutes, gentle and thorough. Oil that is dispersed rather than dissolved migrates while the candle cools, so you finish with more fragrance in some parts of the jar than others — which reads as a quiet pool and sometimes as an oily film on top. The Eco Soy CSI 400 page specifies exactly two minutes; treat it as good practice on any soy. Write the real number on the jarDo the division and label the batch honestly — 9.09%, or 10.4%, or unknown. A recipe you cannot reproduce cannot be diagnosed. One line per batch from here on: wax and grams, oil and grams, computed load, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, wick, pour date.
The 20 g you can see
A thirty-second check that involves no pouring: weigh 20 g of your oil into a small glass. That is what is hiding inside one 200 g candle at 10%. The seven open causes, ordered by what a wrong guess costs
A diagnosis is a sequence, not a list, and the rule that saves the most money is simple: test the cheapest and most reversible explanation first. A cure test costs a fortnight and nothing else. A reformulation costs a bottle, a pour, a cure, a burn and your production schedule — and if the wick was the problem, you spent six weeks learning nothing you can carry forward. The table below is the whole method for someone already at 10%. Every test is a protocol for you to run on your own bench; none of it is a result produced on your behalf.

Two different pages have an opinion about your 10%, and makers usually only read one of them.
Two published numbers govern a load. The wax page states how much oil that wax is formulated to hold in solution — a formulation limit, not a regulatory one. The oil page states the load range that blend was written for in candles. On CSI these two figures frequently disagree, and 10% is exactly where the disagreement bites.
The wax side first. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%, so a maker at 10% on that wax has no legitimate room above them at all. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended — the middle of the published window rather than its edge. CSI 468 states up to 13%. Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax state no load at all, which is information too: there, 10% is your own choice and only a cured burn test can justify it. Now the oil side, which is the half almost nobody checks — several CSI fragrance pages publish a candle band that ends at or below 10%, and one goes well above it.

Read that as a diagnostic, not a scoreboard. If your oil's page states 6–9% and you are pouring 10%, the honest conclusion is not "this oil is weak" — it is that you have taken the blend past the range its page describes, which pushes you toward the surplus-oil failures rather than away from them. If the page states up to 13% and you are at 10%, there is documented room, and that is one of the few places on this page where raising the load is a legitimate next step. Where a page states nothing — true of 26 of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages — your own cured burn test is the only evidence there is.
Two ceilings, and you must respect the lower one. Wax up to 10% with an oil stated to 13% gives a working ceiling of 10%. Wax stated to 13% with an oil stated 6–9% gives 9%. Never publish a recipe above either number, and never above a wax's stated maximum whatever the oil says — past the wax's capacity the surplus does not stay in solution. Add inside the stated band, stir two timed minutes, log the numbersFor Chunks that is fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C. Write both thermometer readings down as you take them, not afterwards. At two hours and three hours lay a ruler across the top and record the widest liquid diameter. Score throw from the doorway at 30, 60 and 120 minutes out of five, and have somebody who did not pour the batch do the scoring if you can.

Read the four scores as a patternDay 21 better than day 7 on both wicks: the problem was the calendar. C2 better than C1 at the same date: the problem was the pool, and the fix costs ₹3.54 a candle. Both wicks reach the glass in two to three hours and the day-21 pair still reads quiet: now you have earned the right to suspect the wax or the oil. Nothing conclusive at all: the uncontrolled variable is probably the room or the judge — go back to check 3. Pour a fifth jar for ₹182.94 on a C1 wick and keep it sealed as a reference, so a later batch is compared against a real candle rather than a memory.

After the wick — where the first paid experiment always belongs, whether that is the other Eco size at ₹9.44 or a Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30–₹59 each for a broader pool — two products do the remaining work, and neither is another bottle of the same oil: a wax with documented headroom, and an oil whose stated structure is weighted toward the base.

The wax to test against if you are at 10% on CSI 464 and have nowhere to go. Its page states a fragrance load of up to 13%, a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a markedly cooler working range than the soy waxes, which is exactly why it is a real test rather than a like-for-like swap. Run it properly: one oil, one wick, one jar size, two waxes, poured the same day, cured together, scored blind — then re-test the wick, because a different wax is a different pool. Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
When you finally earn the right to suspect the oil, compare against something whose stated structure puts its character in the base, because the base is the part still evaporating in hour two. The page states "Base Notes Woody notes, amber, musk - warm, deep, and long-lasting" under a citrus-and-spice top and an oud-and-patchouli heart, and a candle band of "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours" — so your 10% is the top of its stated range, not below it. One buyer's experience rather than a specification, but the right kind of evidence to weigh before spending. The CSI principle
At 10% the percentage has stopped being a question. Everything that is still a question is cheaper to answer.
A ruler, a calendar, a thermometer and two wick sizes cost under ₹780 together and can close five of the seven suspects your 10% has not already closed. The last two cost a bottle or a bag of wax each, and they only mean something once the first five are shut. Order matters more than effort.
Diagnosing before a festive run? Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026, a day-21 verdict needs the test jars poured by mid-October. Bulk pricing, GST invoicing and SDS or IFRA documentation are handled directly on WhatsApp.
The reason to diagnose in order is not tidiness. It is that the wrong answer is a permanent line on your cost sheet.

The cheapest verdicts cost nothing at all and between them explain a large share of quiet candles. The two dearest — a higher load and a costlier oil — are the ones most makers reach for first, and they add ₹2,774 and ₹5,764 a month at only a hundred candles; at 500 a month, ₹13,870 and ₹28,820. That is a marketing budget spent on a hypothesis nobody tested.
Do not stack the fixes. If you answer a quiet batch by curing longer, moving to C2, switching wax and going to 13% all at once, and the next batch is excellent, you now carry every one of those costs forever without knowing which earned its place. Change one thing per batch, keep the score sheets, and reverse whatever made no difference. Ten per cent is not a small number. If the candle is quiet, the missing thing is not oil — it is evidence.

If the candle still reads quiet, the productive question is what happens to those 20 g, not whether there are enough of them.
Should I go from 10% to 12% or 13% to fix weak hot throw?
Only if both your wax page and your oil page allow it, and only after the free checks have failed. Chunks state 8–13% and CSI 468 up to 13%; CSI 464 states up to 10%, so there is no legitimate step on that wax. It is also the dearest change available: on Lavender, 20 g to 26 g adds ₹31.33 of oil per 200 g candle — ₹3,132.60 per hundred — and past a wax's capacity the surplus does not stay in solution.
How do I know if my 10% is really 10%?
Do the division. Load as a share of the finished candle is oil ÷ (wax + oil) × 100. Twenty grams of oil with 180 g of wax is 10%; twenty grams stirred into 200 g of wax is a 220 g candle at 9.09%. From a kilo of wax you need 111.1 g for a true 10%. Then check you weighed rather than measured: oils differ in density, so millilitres do not convert reliably, and a ₹354 scale settles it permanently.
Can a fragrance oil be too concentrated for 10% to work?
Some CSI pages certainly ask for a lower load. Fresh Strawberries states "6-9% of total wax weight for candles" and Coffee Vanilla Tobacco states "7-9% in soy wax" with "Start at 7% and test". At 10% you are above both bands, which is the opposite of under-dosing and pushes you toward surplus-oil behaviour rather than stronger throw. Read the oil's page as well as the wax's, and work to whichever ceiling is lower.
How long should I wait before deciding a 10% candle is weak?
Day 21 for any verdict you would act on commercially. The Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing; 14–21 days is standard practice for soy containers, and woody, gourmand and oriental profiles often keep improving to the end of it. Burn one jar at day 7 for information and a sister jar at day 21 for the decision — the four-jar layout above builds in both dates for ₹738.86.
Will a bigger wick fix a quiet candle at 10%?
A correctly sized one can, because fragrance leaves a candle from the melt pool's surface and that surface is set by the wick and the vessel. An oversized one will not: it soots, mushrooms, overheats the pool and burns off the light end of the blend early. Test rather than assume — Eco Candle Wicks ₹5.90 (Thin C1) and ₹9.44 (Thick C2) each, Performance Wooden Wicks ₹41.30–₹59 — and keep the wick that reaches the glass in two to three hours and burns clean.
