CSI Wick Buying · Tapered Jars
A jar that narrows has two answers: one at the fill line, one at the base. Buy CSI's three tabbed rungs for the top, pour a counted set of shallow lower-zone candles for the base, and buy production wicks only when a full-height candle passes the bottom.

Quick answers — read this first
Which diameter do I plan my wick tests on if my jar is wider at the top? Buy the ladder for the top: the inside diameter at your fill line, because that is the pool the first burns have to reach. Then add a small, counted set of shallow "lower-zone" candles so the narrower base is tested in the first week, not discovered in the final third.

What does that order look like? For a worked-example jar 8.0 cm inside at the top and 6.8 cm at the base, 200 g fill: Eco C1 20 (₹118.00), Eco C2 10 (₹94.40) and Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00), ₹332.40 in all. Nine 200 g ladder candles (three per rung) plus six 60 g lower-zone candles on C2 and Cotton Braided. The base set needs no extra wick pack.

How much does the base set add? ₹417.00 in cash (one 500 g bag of wax and one more centering pack) plus six of your jars; it consumes ₹364.66 of materials, about 23% of the ladder's.

Can I order production wicks once the top looks right? No. A lower-zone candle is a screen. Production wicks are bought only when all three candles of one rung pass the full life, down to about 1 cm in the narrow base.
The short answer
Measure: inside diameter at the fill line, at mid-depth and just above the base, plus the water weight to one third of the fill depth. Three numbers and a weight write the order.
Buy for the top: C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, three 200 g candles each, from the smallest in-stock packs: ₹332.40.
Test the base early: six 60 g lower-zone candles (C2 and Cotton Braided, three each), poured from the same pot in the same jars. Our example base pool is 27.8% smaller than the top.
The honest limit: the taper is your jar (no CSI listing states an inside diameter at any height), and CSI's tabbed range is three rungs with nothing in between. If top and base want different wicks, a finer step may not exist here.
A tapered jar: buy for the top, test the base early Left: your jar, drawn to scale (3 px per mm) on worked-example inside diameters. Right: the order those three measurements write. CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Geometry, not a burn prediction; CSI lists no tapered jar with inside sizes. 8.0 cm · 50.27 cm² top of fill 7.4 cm · 43.01 cm² mid-depth 6.8 cm · 36.32 cm² just above base rim is wider still: measure at the fill line lowest third ≈ 59.5 g Base pool = 72.2% of the top pool. Fill depth drawn 5.3 cm (5.16–5.40 cm on the 0.86–0.9 rule of thumb). Shaded: the zone a 60 g lower-zone candle reproduces. 1 cm at this scale The order it writes Full-height ladder · 200 g · for the top C1 C1 C1 C2 C2 C2 CB CB CB 3 per rung · 16 g oil + 184 g wax each Lower-zone candles · 60 g · for the base C2 C2 C2 CB CB CB 3 per upper rung · 4.8 g oil + 55.2 g wax each (C1 skipped: it is expected to fail the top) Wicks C1 3 of 20 · C2 6 of 10 · CB 6 of 10 = ₹332.40, no extra pack Wax 1,987.2 g: 2 × 1 kg + 500 g Oil 172.8 g: 2 × 100 g bottles Jars 15 of yours (9 + 6) Base set adds ₹417.00 cash + 6 jars Base set uses ₹364.66 of materials Materials exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging, GST. A lower-zone candle is a screen; only full life approves.
Left, to scale: a worked-example tapered jar. The pool the first burn must reach is 50.27 cm² at the fill line; the pool near the base is 36.32 cm², 72.2% of it. The shaded lowest third of the depth holds about 59.5 g of a 200 g fill (29.8%), so a 60 g pour in the same jar reproduces the narrow zone in a single burn. Right: the order those measurements write: a three-rung ladder at 200 g for the top, and six 60 g lower-zone candles on the two upper rungs, all from ₹332.40 of wicks.
Straight answer
My jar is wider at the top than the bottom. Which diameter should I consider when planning wick tests?
Plan the rungs on the top: the inside diameter at your fill line, because the first burns must reach that edge and the whole ladder is judged there first. Plan the extra candles on the base. In a worked-example jar 8.0 cm inside at the fill line and 6.8 cm just above the base, the top pool is 50.27 cm² and the base pool 36.32 cm², 27.8% smaller: a wick chosen for the top has less wax to melt in the final third. So buy CSI's three tabbed rungs for the top, Eco C1 (20-pack, ₹118.00), Eco C2 (10-pack, ₹94.40) and Cotton Braided (10-pack, ₹120.00), and pour nine 200 g ladder candles. Then pour six 60 g lower-zone candles in the same jars (three on C2, three on Cotton Braided, the two rungs that can win the top), so you see how each behaves near the narrow base within days. The same three wick packs cover all fifteen candles. Approve, and buy production wicks, only when all three full-height candles of one rung pass the full life to about 1 cm left.
One line: the top decides which wicks you buy; the base decides how many candles you pour, and the full life decides what you buy next.
The whole wick order: Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026), Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) and Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00): fifteen candles' worth, with spares. Nothing bigger until a rung passes the base.
Eco C1/C2 — from ₹94.40

Measure-to-order: three diameters and one weight

A tapered jar has three diameters. Buy on one of them and you have measured a third of your jar.

Before anything goes in a basket, take four readings from two or three jars of the batch you will actually sell in. Use the inside of the glass, never the outside: a listed or measured outer figure includes two walls (why the external diameter misleads). In a taper the rim is wider again than the fill line, so the rim is the one width that never matters for the wick.

The measure-to-order sheet · tapered jar
Each reading mapped to the line of the order it changes · worked-example values in brackets
Reading How to take it Worked example What it changes in the order
Inside diameter at the fill line Callipers or a ruler across the inside, at the height your wax will stand 8.0 cm · 50.27 cm² Which rungs: the ladder is centred on this pool (C1, C2, Cotton Braided here)
Inside diameter at mid-depth Half-way down the fill; a bent wire or inside callipers 7.4 cm · 43.01 cm² (85.6% of the top) Whether the taper is even or curved, and so where the lower-zone pour should stop
Inside diameter just above the base At the height of the wick tab, not the outside foot 6.8 cm · 36.32 cm² (72.2% of the top) Whether to add lower-zone candles at all, and on which rungs
Water weight to one third of the fill depth Tare the jar, add water to a mark one third up, weigh; then to the fill line about 59.5 g of a 200 g fill The grams of each lower-zone candle, so how much extra wax and oil to buy

The last reading needs a rule of thumb: wax is lighter than water, and candle makers commonly multiply the water weight by about 0.86–0.9 to estimate wax weight. Confirm with one weighed test pour. In our worked example the taper is even, so the lowest third of the depth holds about 29.8% of the fill: 59.5 g, rounded to a 60 g lower-zone candle. A curved jar can hold much more or much less down there, which is why you weigh it rather than divide by three.

The add-on rule: how much taper earns extra candles

Not every slightly narrower base is worth six more candles. Compare the base pool with the top pool, area to area. The bands below are our judgement, readable off three measurements, and are a buying rule, not a burn prediction.

When the base earns its own candles · 8.0 cm top shown
Base pool as a share of the top pool · bands are editorial judgement · areas on inside diameters
Base pool vs top pool Base diameter under an 8.0 cm top What to add to the order
85% or more 7.38 cm or wider Nothing: treat it as straight-sided and run the plain ladder (the hub buy list)
70% to 85% 6.69 to 7.38 cm Three lower-zone candles on each rung that can win the top (C2 and Cotton Braided here): six candles
Under 70% narrower than 6.69 cm Lower-zone candles on all three rungs (nine), and plan for the chance that no single CSI rung passes both ends

Our 6.8 cm base is 72.2% of the top, the middle band: six lower-zone candles. If your jar is CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), its page lists an outer rim of about 7 cm and a base of about 6.5 cm, both outside figures; on our 0.35 cm wall assumption that is 31.17 against 26.42 cm², 84.8%. That is a hint of a taper, not a measurement: callipers on your own jars decide the band.

Spec it once, order once
Write the three diameters and the one-third weight on the same sheet as wax, oil, load and fill. The full pre-order sheet, field by field, is the 8 cm spec-sheet post; this page adds the two taper rows.

Why the top width sets the rungs

The first burn is judged at the fill line. Buy wicks that can reach it, then find out which of them survive the base.

A container candle's first burns are commonly expected to reach the glass within about 3–4 hours (a rule of thumb, not CSI data), and a very rough guide is about an hour per 2.5 cm of width: about 3.2 hours at 8.0 cm, about 2.7 at 6.8 cm. If you buy a ladder centred on the base, every rung is sized for a smaller pool than the one your customer lights first, and the likely result is a tunnel at the top that never recovers. If you centre on the middle, you split the difference and test neither end. So the rungs come from the top.

In CSI terms "the rungs" are short: Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, tabbed and ready to use, with no sized, tabbed wick between them and none above Cotton Braided. At an 8.0 cm top with a light herbal oil, our judgement puts the likely answer at C2, with Cotton Braided as the rung that may be needed if C2 leaves wax on the glass. C1 is in the order as the low anchor: it is expected to tunnel at the top, and that documented fail closes the bracket from below. None of that is a verdict; it is why all three are bought.

The oil matters because it sets the likely centre. Eucalyptus Spearmint states "up to 10% for soy wax", so 8% of total weight (which is 8.70% of wax weight) is inside both ceilings: the oil page's and the Chunks page's "up to 13%". Light, bright herbals often burn more easily than dense vanilla or oud oils, a tendency that keeps Cotton Braided at the top of the bracket rather than its centre. CSI has no measured wick data for any oil, so that stays judgement.

Mistake: splitting the difference and buying "a wick for 7.4 cm". Why it fails: the middle is the one depth nobody judges a candle at: the customer sees the top first and the jar's risk sits at the base. Fix: rungs for the top, extra candles for the base. How a taper changes the pool, the heat and the burn schedule all the way down is the tapered-jar burn-testing post; this page owns what to buy because of it.

One more reason to keep the full ladder: a wick that passes the top and is calm at the base still has to be compared against its neighbours. The bracket logic (a documented fail on each side of the winner) is the same as for a straight jar: the adjacent-rungs post covers what that means with only three rungs.

The lower-zone add-on: how many, how big, what it costs

Six small candles now are cheaper than one surprise in week three.

A lower-zone candle is a shallow pour, in the same jar, of roughly the weight that sits in the lowest third of the fill. Its wick stands on the same base, its pool is the narrow one, and it shows in a session or two what the full candle would show only after days of burning. The method (why the early test looked right, how shallow to pour, how to read it) is the bottom-zone shortcut post; it is labelled there as a screen that never replaces a full life. This page owns the counting.

How many

Three per rung that could win the top, so one odd candle is outvoted. In the middle band that is C2 and Cotton Braided: six candles. C1 is left out because it is expected to fail at the top, and a wick that fails the first burns is not bought however calm it is at the base. If your base is under 70% of the top, add three C1 lower-zone candles too (₹167.87 in materials at ₹55.96 each): in a strong taper the smallest rung is the one most likely to suit the base, and you want that on record.

How big

Weigh it, as above. In the worked example, 60 g at 8% is 4.8 g of oil and 55.2 g of wax. Keep the load identical to the full candles: a lower-zone candle with a different load tests a different candle.

What it costs

Lower-zone set · six 60 g candles · worked example
Eucalyptus Spearmint at the 100 g price (₹3.54/g) · Chunks at ₹0.60/g · wicks from packs already in the order · jars excluded
Line Quantity Materials New cash
Lower-zone candles on C2 3 × 60 g ₹59.50 each none: wicks from the C2 10-pack
Lower-zone candles on Cotton Braided 3 × 60 g ₹62.06 each none: wicks from the Cotton Braided 10-pack
Oil 28.8 g ₹101.95 none: the two 100 g bottles bought for the ladder cover it
Wax 331.2 g ₹198.39 one 500 g bag, ₹299.00: two 1 kg bags would leave only 12.8 g
Centring 6 more holders reusable one more pack of 5, ₹118.00 (all fifteen in one pour)
Total 6 candles, 6 of your jars ₹364.66 (23% of the ladder) ₹417.00 + 6 jars

That is the whole case for the add-on: it costs about a quarter of the ladder in materials and one bag of wax in cash, and it moves the narrow-base result from the last week of testing to the first.

Don't buy a second set of wick packs for the base: you don't need one. C2 and Cotton Braided come in tens; the ladder uses three of each and the lower-zone set three more, leaving 4 and 4. Argued against our own interest: the lower-zone set adds no wick spend at all, and the C1 20-pack (the smallest we have in stock) already leaves you 17 spare C1.

Why not simply wait for the full candles? Because by the time a full-height candle reaches the narrow base, you have burned it for days, and if the wick runs hot there, the replacement ladder starts from zero. Whether to also carry a lot of the next rung down for exactly that case is the reserve-rung post for narrowing jars.

The whole order, line by line

Fifteen candles, three wick packs, one pot.

Everything for the ladder and the lower-zone set, with the smallest in-stock pack that covers each line. The jar is the one item we cannot price: the taper is yours. Load is 8% of total candle weight, CSI's convention.

Your tapered jars 9 full + 6 lower-zone = 15 your supplier yours — —

From nothing, that is ₹2,891.40 in cash plus fifteen jars. The ladder alone would be ₹2,474.40 (two 1 kg bags, two centering packs, the same wicks and oil), so the base set's extra cash is ₹417.00. If you already hold wax and oil, the order is the three wick packs, ₹332.40, and nothing else.

The oil line deserves a check, because it is where baskets usually go wrong. A 100 g + 50 g pair (₹566.40) holds 150 g, short of the 172.8 g needed. Two 100 g bottles hold 200 g and leave 27.2 g: one more 200 g candle (1) or 5 more lower-zone candles, enough to re-pour a split cell. The 500 g is ₹0.24 a gram cheaper but would leave 327.2 g in the cupboard before you know which wick, or which jar, you are keeping.

Set totals Nine-candle ladder ₹1,583.72 · six lower-zone candles ₹364.66 · all fifteen ₹1,948.38

Notice how little the wick moves the number: the dearest full candle costs ₹6.10 more than the cheapest. The candles are the cost of a test, not the wicks, which is why the add-on is counted in candles.

Reading the two sets, and what each result buys

The top set tells you which wick can work. The base set tells you which one to keep watching.

Pour all fifteen from one pot, the same day, into one jar batch, and cure them identically; the Eucalyptus Spearmint page says "Cure time is 48-72 hours for soy wax", and many makers wait about a week before judging. Then run them in this order.

1
Label every baseC1-a to CB-c for the ladder, LZ-C2-a to LZ-CB-c for the shallow candles, with the pour date.
2
Burn the ladder in 3–4 hour sessionsStill air, full cool-down between sessions, trimmed to about 5–6 mm (one CSI trimmer page: "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn"). Log the ring at the glass each hour (the four-point pool log).
3
Burn the lower-zone candles in the same weekOne or two sessions each, until about 1 cm of wax is left. Watch trimmed flame height, how fast the pool deepens, carbon on the wick and how close the flame sits to the glass, judged by eye. Never judge glass heat by touch.
4
Screen at burn 3 of the ladderDrop any rung that fails the top in the expected direction; it is never reordered.
5
Keep the survivors burning to the endThe full-height candles of every rung still standing go to about 1 cm left. Only these approve a wick.
6
Buy on the result, not the hopeUse the table below.
Results → purchases · tapered jar (our judgement, labelled)
Top = ladder candles at burn 3 · Base = lower-zone candles · Full life = the ladder candles to about 1 cm left · only the last column releases production money
Top Base Reading What to buy
C2 reaches the glass by burn 3 C2 calm: steady flame, pool not racing deep The likely answer; the base set found no early warning Nothing yet: finish the full life, then production C2
C2 reaches the glass C2 tall, deep or carbon-heavy near the base C2 may be right for the top and too much for the base Nothing in bulk; consider a reserve of C1 (reserve rung) and watch C2's full life closely
C2 leaves a ring; Cotton Braided reaches the glass Cotton Braided calm Cotton Braided is the candidate Nothing yet: full life, then production Cotton Braided
C2 leaves a ring; Cotton Braided reaches the glass Cotton Braided hot near the base No CSI rung may pass both ends Stop buying rungs; read the narrowing-jar retest and ask us whether anything sits between
Every rung tunnels — Check centring, session length, draughts before blaming the wick Nothing until the test is fair

The second and fourth rows are the reason the lower-zone set exists. Without it, both are discovered in the final third of the ladder, after a week of burning, and the reorder starts from there. How the flame commonly grows in the lower third of a wider jar, and how to separate stored heat from wick size, is the lower-third aggression post.

Mistake: approving the wick from the lower-zone candles because they behaved. Why it fails: a 60 g candle starts cold; a full candle reaches the base after days of heat built up in the glass and wax. A calm shallow candle lowers the risk, it doesn't remove it. Fix: the lower-zone set can stop a purchase early; only the full life can start one.

From an approved wick to a production order

Approve on the full jar, then buy by the formula, not the pack list.

Once all three full-height candles of one rung pass the full life, size the wick order from your own production: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance for rejects and retests. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided are flat per wick, so the pack only changes how much cash leaves today.

Production order · worked example: 150 tapered-jar candles a month
150 × 1 wick × 1.05 = 157.5, rounded up to 158 · flat per-wick pricing · oil and wax for scale · all figures declared

C2 158 100 + 50 + 10 = 160 ₹1,510.40
Cotton Braided 158 100 + 50 + 10 = 160 ₹1,920.00
C1 (only if it passes the top, which a strong taper can allow) 158 100 + 50 + 20 = 170 (no C1 10-pack in stock) ₹1,003.00
For scale: Eucalyptus Spearmint 2,400 g 3 × 1 kg (or 2 × 1 kg + 500 g) ₹7,363.20 at the 1 kg per-gram price
For scale: Chunks 27,600 g 3 × 10 kg ₹16,557.24 at the 10 kg per-gram price

A month of wicks is a small line next to the oil and wax; the costly mistake is 150 candles of oil and wax poured around a wick that only passed the top. Reorder points and safety stock follow the hub's formula, daily use × your lead time + safety stock (the hub's production section); CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times or stock depth, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before a large run. What full life costs in days, against what a wrong bulk order costs in rupees, is the heavy-base full-life post.

Don't buy the Cotton Braided 100 because it filled the top fastest: ₹1,200.00 buys 100 wicks at exactly the price of ten 10-packs, and in a taper the wick that wins the first burn is the one most likely to fail the base. Argued against our own interest: we would rather sell you that 100-pack after its three full-height candles have reached the bottom of your jar.

A change of jar batch is a change of geometry. If a new delivery measures differently at the base, the approval is for the old jar; how small a change still needs a confirmation order is the 5 mm post.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items in the order the test uses them, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per 150 g candle.

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
Two of CSI's three tabbed rungs. C1 is the low anchor for the 8.0 cm top: expected to tunnel there, it closes the bracket from below. C2 is the likely centre for a light herbal oil at that width (our judgement), and the first rung whose lower-zone candles you need to watch. The page describes wicks of "natural fibers like cotton and paper" that "pair perfectly with soy wax" and, in the text we captured, states no length, width or jar range. Stock on 1 October 2026: the C1 10-pack is out of stock; the 20-pack and every C2 pack are in. Per wick the price is flat in every pack (₹5.90 C1, ₹9.44 C2). Limitation: there is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, which matters most in a taper, where the base may want something a little smaller than the top.

The top tabbed rung, and the one most likely to fill the wide top fast. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and claims "preventing tunneling"; your top is 8.0 cm, your base is not. That is exactly why its three lower-zone candles are in the order: the wick that wins the first burn is the one most at risk of running hot near a 36.32 cm² base. The page also states "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm", taller than a 60 g pour by a long way, so trim it before every lower-zone burn. Limitation: no width or braid count is stated, and CSI lists no larger single tabbed wick.

wax · the container soy in this worked example
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
The wax the ladder is costed on. The page states "Exceptional fragrance throw with up to 13% fragrance load capacity" and "Clean burning with minimal soot" (the page's claims), so 8% sits well inside it. In the text we captured it states no pour or add temperature; follow your jar's hot-pour wording if it has one and keep the pour identical across all fifteen candles. Per gram it is effectively flat: ₹0.60 at 500 g, ₹0.60 at 1 kg and 5 kg. That makes the 500 g bag the cheapest way to buy margin, not a premium. Limitation: a wick approved in Chunks is approved in Chunks; move to CSI 464 and the ladder starts again.

fragrance oil · herbal · the oil in this worked example
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
A light, bright oil, chosen so the ladder tests the jar rather than a heavy fragrance. The page describes it as "combining crisp eucalyptus with cool spearmint", "Moderate to strong throw", states "Recommended fragrance load up to 10% for soy wax, up to 6% for paraffin" and "No vanillin - zero risk of discoloration" (the page's claim; test anyway), and says "Cure time is 48-72 hours for soy wax". Lighter herbal oils often burn more easily than heavy gourmands, a tendency that pushes the centre towards C2 rather than Cotton Braided (judgement). Every size is in stock on 1 October 2026; per gram it falls from ₹4.56 at 15 g to ₹3.07 at 1 kg.

tool · keeps fifteen wicks centred in one pour
Wick Centering Device (Pack of 5)
An off-centre wick fakes a one-sided tunnel at the top and a wick drifting towards the glass at the base: both would send you to the wrong purchase. The page describes a wooden holder, "Length 4.4" (11,4 cm)" with a "Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)", for openings "less than 4"", which spans an 8 cm top. Three packs hold all fifteen wicks while one pot sets. Argued against our own interest: if you pour the lower-zone candles straight after the ladder from the same pot, two packs and a clothes peg will do.

Skip for this order: Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5): a single-wick taper doesn't need a three-hole bar. Eco Candle Wicks Loose: untabbed and described for "2 inch diameters", well below even this base. Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10): one listing with no widths, so it cannot form a ladder; wooden versus cotton is a separate test. Eco Braided Wicks (₹472.00 for 5 m): unsized and cut to length; only worth it if top and base land between CSI's rungs.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 38 days from 1 October 2026. A ladder and lower-zone set poured this week can show the base result by mid-October; the full-life burns take the weeks after. Pour production only after the full life, then send us the approved rung and your candle count for a quote on wicks, Chunks and Eucalyptus Spearmint with a GST invoice and dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Buy for the top. Test the base before it tests you.
Three diameters and one weight write the order: a three-rung ladder for the fill line, six shallow candles for the narrow base, ₹332.40 of wicks for all of it, and no production order until a full-height candle reaches the bottom.
"A tapered jar tells you the truth twice: once at the top, once at the bottom. Pay for both answers before you pay for a thousand wicks."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, oil and centring tools named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that the base set needs no extra wick pack, that our tabbed range has nothing between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, that no CSI listing states an inside diameter at any height, and that the 100-packs save nothing per wick.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The 8.0 / 7.4 / 6.8 cm diameters, the 200 g and 60 g fills, the add-on bands, the likely centre, the 5% allowance and the 150-candle month are worked examples or editorial judgement; melt-pool times and the 0.86–0.9 water-to-wax factor are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data. Frequently asked questions

Which diameter do I use for wick size in a tapered candle jar?
The inside diameter at your fill line sets which wicks you test, because the first burns must reach that edge. The base diameter decides whether you add shallow lower-zone test candles. Neither one names a wick: you still burn a ladder.
Why does my candle burn fine at the top but run hot near the bottom of the jar?
In a jar that narrows, the pool near the base is smaller, so the same wick has less wax to melt; heat built up over earlier burns adds to it. In our worked example the base pool is 27.8% smaller than the top. A wick that is right at the top can be too much lower down.
How many test candles do I need for a jar that is wider at the top?
Nine full-height candles (three each on Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided) plus, when the base pool is between 70% and 85% of the top, six shallow lower-zone candles on C2 and Cotton Braided. CSI's C1 20, C2 10 and Cotton Braided 10 packs cover all fifteen for ₹332.40.
How much wax goes in a lower-zone test candle?
About the weight that sits in the lowest third of your fill depth: weigh water to that mark and multiply by roughly 0.86–0.9, then confirm with a test pour. In our evenly tapered example that is about 60 g of a 200 g fill, at the same 8% load.
Can I approve a wick from shallow test candles?
No. They are a screen that shows a base problem early. A full-height candle reaches the base with heat already stored in the glass and wax, so only full-life burns of three candles approve a wick and release a production order.
Does CSI sell a tapered candle jar with the inside diameters listed?
No CSI jar listing states an inside diameter at any height. The 150 g Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid lists an outer rim of about 7 cm and a base of about 6.5 cm, outside figures only, so measure your own jars with callipers before ordering wicks.
Your wick order for a tapered jar
C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10 = ₹332.40: a ladder for the top and a lower-zone set for the base.
Measure three inside diameters and the one-third weight, pour nine 200 g ladder candles and six 60 g lower-zone candles from one pot, screen at burn 3, and buy production wicks only after the full life. Send us the measurements on WhatsApp and we will check the order before you pay.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on jar diameter → wick testing (5501–5520). It answers one purchasing decision for a jar that is wider at the top than the base: measure three inside diameters and a one-third weight, buy the three-rung ladder for the fill-line width, and add a counted set of 60 g lower-zone candles so the base is tested early, with the full bill, a results-to-purchase table and the step to production.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; 60 g at 8% = 4.8 g + 55.2 g). The inside diameters (8.0, 7.4 and 6.8 cm), the even taper, the 5.3 cm drawn fill depth and the 60 g lower-zone fill are worked-example assumptions; pool area = π r² on inside radii; the lowest-third share uses frustum volumes. The 0.35 cm wall applies only to the CSI 150 g jar comparison. Chunks "up to 13%" and Eucalyptus Spearmint "up to 10% for soy wax" are the pages' stated ceilings, formulation limits not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm) and the 0.86–0.9 water-to-wax factor are commonly cited rules of thumb. The add-on bands, the likely centre, the 5% allowance and the 150-candle month are editorial judgement and worked examples. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
