CSI Wick Buying · Oud vs Rose
The same 8% of oud and of rose is the same weight and a different fuel. Test the rung above your wick under two ouds at once, and you buy an answer for the whole oud family.
₹930.00
Cotton Braided 10 + White Royal Oud 100 g: the new items for a two-oud family rung test · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my oud candle have a smaller flame than rose at the same 8%? Composition, most likely. Oud-style oils are commonly built on heavy woody, resinous and amber materials, and heavier oils are often seen to burn with a smaller flame on a wick that suits a light floral. It is a tendency, not a measurement: CSI publishes no composition data.

What should I buy? Test the rung above your wick under two ouds, not one: a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and a 100 g White Royal Oud (₹810.00) beside the Woody Oud you already pour: ₹930.00 of new items for a 10-candle set.

Why two ouds? Because the question worth paying for is whether one extra wick SKU serves your whole oud family. If both ouds burn small on C2 and pass on Cotton Braided, the next oud you launch needs a three-candle admission test (₹599.28), not a nine-candle ladder (₹1,771.87).

When do I stock Cotton Braided? Only after all three candles of each oud pass the full life on it. Then stock it for the oud candles you sell, at ₹2.56 a candle more than C2, and keep rose on C2.
The short answer
Buy: Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00) + White Royal Oud 100 g (₹810.00) = ₹930.00. Your C2, Woody Oud, rose and wax cover the rest.
Pour: 10 candles in one batch: each oud three times on Cotton Braided, both ouds on C2 as references, one rose on C2 as the yardstick.
Decide: both ouds small on C2 and passing on Cotton Braided = a family rung. Only Woody Oud = an oil-specific wick. Neither = buy nothing.
The honest limit: two ouds are evidence for a family, not proof. Every later oud still gets a short admission test on the rung, and CSI sells nothing between C2 and Cotton Braided.
The oud family on CSI: which two ouds the rung test speaks for Price per gram at the 100 g size, CSI live prices, 1 October 2026, with the oil cost of one 200 g candle at 8% (16 g). Black: the two test ouds. Grey: other oud-style listings. White: the rose that burns well on C2. Price is not burn behaviour: CSI publishes no composition or wick data. A rung that passes for two styles of oud is a reason to screen the others on it first, not proof they will pass. Bars at 20 px per rupee a gram.
CSI's oud-named and oud-family listings in stock at 100 g (brand-inspired listings left out), by price per gram, with the oil cost of one 200 g candle at 8%. The two black bars are the test ouds: different styles (spice-patchouli-amber against saffron-rose-sandalwood) at two price points. The chart says nothing about how any of them burns; it shows what each oud would cost you on the rung, and which ones a family result would point to first.
Straight answer
My oud candle has a smaller flame than my rose candle even though both use 8% fragrance. Why can fragrance composition change wick performance?
Because the same 8% is not the same fuel. Fragrance oils are blends of many materials, and oud-style blends commonly lean on heavy woody, resinous, amber and musk notes, while a fresh rose leans lighter. Heavier, less volatile oils are often seen to give a smaller flame or more carbon on a wick that suits a light floral; that is a tendency, and CSI publishes no composition or wick data for any oil. The purchasing answer is to test the rung above your wick, and to test it under two different ouds at once, so you learn whether one extra wick serves the family. Buy a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and a 100 g White Royal Oud (₹810.00) to sit beside your Woody Oud: three candles of each oud on Cotton Braided, both ouds on C2 for reference, and one rose candle on C2 as the yardstick, all 200 g at 8% from one batch. If both ouds pass the full life on Cotton Braided, it becomes your oud wick and each new oud needs only a short admission test.
One line: ₹930.00 tests whether one rung carries every oud; the answer is worth more than a wick for one bottle.
The family test order: Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) and White Royal Oud 100 g (₹810.00), both in stock on 1 October 2026. If you will not sell White Royal Oud, swap in the oud you will.

Why oud can burn smaller than rose at the same 8%

Eight percent is a weight, not a behaviour. What that weight is made of decides how the wick feeds the flame.

A candle flame burns wax and fragrance that the wick draws up from the melt pool. Change what is dissolved in that pool and you can change how readily the wick feeds the flame. Three tendencies are commonly described, none of them a CSI measurement:

How composition can change a wick's behaviour · commonly described tendencies
General candle-making observations, not CSI data · CSI publishes no composition or viscosity figures for any oil
Tendency Often seen as Oils commonly linked
Heavier, less volatile materials in the blend A smaller or lazier flame on a wick that suits light oils Woody, resinous, amber, musk-heavy blends (many ouds)
Dense or viscous oils Slower edge, more carbon on the wick Vanilla-rich and dark gourmand blends
Lighter top-and-heart blends A livelier flame on the same wick Fresh florals, citrus, herbal

What the pages state fits that picture without proving it. Woody Oud lists a "rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk". White Royal Oud lists "labdanum" (a resin), "creamy sandalwood, ambergris, and soft musk". British Rose lists "fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones and a soft floral finish". Notes describe smell, not chemistry; two ouds can differ more from each other than one of them does from a rose. That is exactly why this page tests two.

8% of total weight is 8.70% of the wax weight, inside every relevant ceiling: Woody Oud "candles (6-10%)", White Royal Oud "6-10% for candles", British Rose "up to 10% soy", CSI 464 "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". So the smaller flame is not an over-loaded candle; it is the same load of a different oil. Raising the oud load to "feed" the flame is the wrong instinct: more oil commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, not bigger.

Mistake: reading a smaller flame as a fault in itself and buying the biggest wick. Why it fails: a smaller flame matters only if it leaves wax on the glass, a shallow pool or poor throw. Many oud candles burn smaller and still pass. Fix: photograph flames against a ruler at hour 1 and hour 2, and check the pool at four points before deciding the rung is too small. If your oud's problem is carbon, not flame size, that is a different diagnosis: the oud-mushrooming post.

The family test: two ouds, one up-rung

One oud on a bigger wick answers one question. Two ouds on it answer the one you will face every time you launch an oud.

The worked example is the cluster's jar: your 200 g jar about 8.0 cm inside (50.27 cm² of pool), CSI 464, 8%, 16 g oil + 184 g wax per candle. British Rose passes on Eco C2. Woody Oud on the same C2 burns with a visibly smaller flame. The test asks: does Cotton Braided fix it for Woody Oud, and does a second, different oud behave the same way?

New purchases are ₹930.00. From nothing except C2 and rose (a fresh Woody Oud and two bags of wax) it is ₹2,397.92. The candles: Woody Oud × 3 on Cotton Braided and × 1 on C2 (the small flame, repeated in this batch), White Royal Oud × 3 on Cotton Braided and × 2 on C2 (does the second oud burn small too?), British Rose × 1 on C2 (the yardstick).

Why only one Woody Oud on C2: you already have the small-flame result; one repeat shows it reappears in this batch. Why two White Royal Oud on C2: it is untested on the house wick, and its C2 result decides whether it belongs in the family at all. Three on the up-rung for each oud, because three candles through the full life is the approval standard this series uses.

Don't buy the oud rung in bulk on one oud's result: a Cotton Braided 100-pack (₹1,200.00) after Woody Oud alone passes is a bet that every oud you sell behaves like Woody Oud. Cotton Braided costs ₹12.00 a wick in the 10-pack and in the 1,000-pack, so waiting costs you nothing per wick. Argued against our own interest: buy the 10-pack, run both ouds, then size the order.

Which two ouds, and what they cost

Pick the two ouds that differ most, and that you would actually sell.

A family test is only as wide as the two oils in it. Two ouds that smell alike would tell you little about the third. Woody Oud and White Royal Oud are a useful pair because their stated notes differ (citrus, spice, patchouli and amber against bergamot, saffron, rose, labdanum and sandalwood) and because both state a candle load: "candles (6-10%)" and "6-10% for candles". Of the oud-style listings in the chart, Woody Oud, White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud are the three whose listing data states a candle load; Dark Vanilla Oud mixes oud with vanilla, so a result on it could be the vanilla talking.

The test ouds and the yardstick · oil cost per 200 g candle
16 g at the 100 g price · CSI 464 at ₹93.36 a candle · wick at pack price · jars excluded
Candle Oil On C2 On Cotton Braided
Woody Oud ₹72.50 ₹175.30 ₹177.86
White Royal Oud ₹129.60 ₹232.40 ₹234.96
British Rose (yardstick) ₹54.75 ₹157.55 not poured
The ten-candle set ₹2,036.12 of materials, excluding your jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST

White Royal Oud carries ₹57.10 more oil per candle than Woody Oud. That is a pricing fact for your range, not a reason to prefer either in the test. If White Royal Oud is not a scent you would sell, use the second oud you would: Dark Vanilla Oud's 100 g (₹590.00) makes the order ₹710.00, ₹220.00 cheaper, with the vanilla caveat above. A 15 g bottle of any of them is a sniff sample: at 16 g a candle it fills none of these candles, but it lets you smell an oud before spending on 100 g.

Perfume-grade ouds are a separate question
Lavender Oud and Amber Oud Royal are perfume-grade listings at ₹12.00 and ₹12.99 a gram (100 g). Perfume usage rates on such pages are not candle loads. If you plan to pour them, they need their own load decision before any wick test; a family rung approved on Woody Oud and White Royal Oud does not cover them.

Pouring the ten-candle family set

Flame size is the result, so everything that changes flame size except the oil and the wick must hold still.
1
Three pots, one wax bag, one dayWoody Oud for four candles (64 g into 736 g), White Royal Oud for five (80 g into 920 g), rose for one. Jars from one batch. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; a lower stated jar limit governs.
2
Split each oud pot across both wicksSame pot, same oil, two wicks: WO-CB-1…3 and WO-C2; WRO-CB-1…3 and WRO-C2-1, 2; ROSE-C2. Cotton Braided is tall ("Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"): trim it after the wax sets.
3
Cure togetherWoody Oud's page says "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing"; the White Royal Oud and rose pages state no cure time in the text we captured. Many makers wait about a week; cure all ten the same.
4
Burn 3–4 hour sessions in still airTrim to about 5–6 mm before each session; no fan or AC vent (draughts change flame size more than oils do); within sight; full cool-down between sessions.
5
Photograph flames against a rulerAt hour 1 and hour 2, every candle, same camera position. Many makers treat roughly 2.5–5 cm as a practical flame range (rule of thumb). The rose candle is your reference for this batch.
6
Log pool, carbon and the final thirdPool at four points each hour (the four-point pool log), carbon on the wick, soot on a white card, and near the base how close the flame sits to the glass, judged by eye, never by touch.

The flame photographs are the core record. A grid of flames at fixed times, the method in the flame-height grid post, lets you compare the two ouds' flames on C2 directly with the rose's, and then with their own flames on Cotton Braided. Commonly cited rules of thumb put a full first pool at about 3–4 hours and pool depth at about 0.5–1 cm; read the rest against your own standard and keep it fixed.

Four outcomes, four purchases

The test is built so that every result tells you what to buy, including "nothing".
Family test results · the purchase each one triggers (our judgement, labelled)
Screen at burn 3 · approve only after all three Cotton Braided candles of an oud pass the full life
Result Reading Purchase
Both ouds burn small on C2; both pass the full life on Cotton Braided Family rung: Cotton Braided is your oud wick in this jar, wax and load Stock Cotton Braided for oud volume; admit new ouds with a three-candle test
Woody Oud small on C2 and passes on Cotton Braided; White Royal Oud fine on C2 Oil-specific, not family Cotton Braided for Woody Oud only; every new oud is screened on C2 first (the stock-or-reformulate call is one fragrance, its own wick)
Neither oud burns small on C2 in this batch The original small flame was not the oil (session, draught, trim, a different bag) Nothing; keep the 4 spare Cotton Braided
Ouds small on C2 and running hot on Cotton Braided (deep pool, tall flame, mushrooming) Between CSI's rungs for this family A pair-of-C1 test, a lower load, or ask us
Rose yardstick misbehaves The batch, not the oils Nothing until you know why

The first row is the result the test is designed to find, and it is a judgement call to treat two ouds as a family. We think it is a fair working rule, provided each later oud still earns its place with an admission test on the rung, the kind of standing rule described in the behaviour-groups post. Two ouds do not prove that a smoky bakhoor-style oud or a perfume-grade one behaves the same.

Mistake: approving the family on burn 3 because both oud flames look like the rose's on Cotton Braided. Why it fails: a bigger wick that looks right early is the one most likely to run hot near the base, where heat commonly builds. Fix: all three Cotton Braided candles of each oud to about 1 cm left. The decision is about your whole oud range; it can wait for the bottom of the jar.

What a family rung saves on the next oud

The family result pays for itself the next time you launch an oud.

Without a family rung, a new oud in this jar is a new problem: a full three-rung ladder, three candles each on C1, C2 and Cotton Braided. With one, it is an admission test: three candles on the oud rung through the full life, with a C2 candle as a check if you want one. For a third oud such as Dark Vanilla Oud:

Launching a third oud · admission test vs full ladder
Dark Vanilla Oud at the 100 g price (₹94.40 of oil a candle) · CSI 464 at ₹93.36 · wicks at pack price · jars excluded
Route Candles Oil Materials
Admission test on the oud rung 3 on Cotton Braided 48 g ₹599.28
Full three-rung ladder 9 (3 × C1, C2, Cotton Braided) 144 g ₹1,771.87
Saved per new oud 6 candles and jars 96 g ₹1,172.59

The ten-candle family set costs ₹2,036.12 in materials; one avoided ladder recovers more than half of it. The admission route is not a shortcut around approval: the three candles still burn to the bottom. It is a shortcut around the rungs you already know an oud will not need.

Stocking the oud rung

Once the family is approved, order with the series formula: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), 5% as our worked-example figure. With 50 Woody Oud and 30 White Royal Oud candles a month, that is 84 Cotton Braided (₹1,008.00), bought as 50 + four 10-packs (₹1,080.00, 90 wicks) because Cotton Braided is flat per wick. The step over C2 costs ₹204.80 a month; if a third oud joins at 20 candles, ₹256.00. Rose and your other light oils stay on C2. With a 10-day order-to-bench time (your figure; CSI publishes no lead times) and a week of safety stock, reorder at about 48 wicks. Splitting quantities across two wick sizes by sales mix in detail is the two-wick quantity post.

Don't move rose to the oud rung for "one wick": it adds ₹2.56 to every rose candle and puts a light floral on a wick it has never been tested on, where it commonly burns hotter. Argued against our own interest: two wick SKUs, each matched to the oils that passed on it, is less of our product and the better stock. Switching a single lavender candle to a heavy oud, by contrast, is a one-shipment kit: the lavender-to-oud switch post.

What to buy for the oud family test, and what to skip

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data for any oil, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. Candle counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per 150 g candle.

wick · the candidate family rung
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
The rung above C2, tested under two ouds at once to see whether one extra wick SKU can carry the whole oud family. The page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and claims "preventing tunneling" (its claim); it gives one dimension, "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm". CSI sells no sized, tabbed wick between C2 and Cotton Braided. Limitation: if it runs hot for an oud, the in-between options are pairs or a lower load, not a slightly bigger single.

The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" and no cure time in the text we captured. It is flat at ₹8.10 a gram from 100 g up. Argued against our own interest: if you would never sell it, do not buy ₹810.00 of it for a test; use the second oud you would sell. The 15 g (₹130.00) is a sniff sample: smell it before you commit; it fills no 200 g candle.

The page lists "fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones and a soft floral finish" and states "candles (up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin)". It stays on C2 whatever the ouds decide; moving it to the oud rung would cost ₹2.56 a candle and needs its own test.

The CSI principle
Test a rung for the family, not for the bottle.
₹930.00 puts two different ouds on the rung above your wick. If both pass the full life, one extra SKU carries your ouds and every new one needs three candles, not nine.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks and oils named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy ₹810.00 of an oud you will not sell, not to bulk-buy the rung on one oud's result, to keep rose on the cheaper wick, and that we sell nothing between C2 and Cotton Braided.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack, Regal Royal Oud and Royal Oud's 100 g are out of stock on that date and flagged; every size offered is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The composition tendencies are general candle-making observations, not CSI data; CSI publishes no composition, viscosity or wick-performance data for any oil. The 8.0 cm jar, 200 g fill, family rule, 5% allowance, monthly volumes and 10-day lead time are our judgement or worked examples. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Why does oud fragrance make a candle flame smaller?
Oud-style oils are commonly built on heavy woody, resinous, amber and musk materials, and heavier oils are often seen to burn with a smaller flame on a wick that suits light florals. It is a tendency, not a rule; test it rather than assume it.
Do oud candles need a bigger wick?
Often, but only if the smaller flame leaves wax on the glass or a shallow pool. Test the rung above your wick (with CSI wicks, Cotton Braided above Eco C2), three candles, through the full life.
Can all my oud fragrances use the same wick?
Possibly. Test the rung under two different ouds at once; if both pass the full life, treat it as your oud wick and give each new oud a three-candle admission test on it rather than a full ladder.
Does fragrance composition affect how a wick burns?
Commonly, yes. The same load of a different oil can change flame size, carbon build-up and how fast the pool reaches the glass. Notes describe smell, not burn, so only a burn test tells you.
Should I increase fragrance load if the flame is small?
No. More oil commonly makes a flame smaller or sootier, not bigger, and you may pass the wax's stated ceiling (CSI 464 states up to 10%). Change the wick, not the load, to fix a small flame.
How many candles do I need to test a wick for oud?
Three on the new wick per oud, through the full life. This family test uses 10: three per oud on Cotton Braided, both ouds on C2 for reference, and one rose candle as the yardstick.
Your oud family test
Cotton Braided 10 + White Royal Oud 100 g = ₹930.00: one rung, two ouds, one answer for the family.
Pour 10 candles in one batch, photograph flames against a ruler at hour 1 and 2, screen at burn 3 and approve each oud on the full life. Tell us your ouds and jar on WhatsApp and we will check the order before you pay.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on fragrance changing the wick (5521–5540): why an oud can burn with a smaller flame than a rose at the same 8% (composition tendencies, hedged), and the purchase that turns one oil's problem into a family decision: Cotton Braided under two different ouds with C2 references and a rose yardstick, costed; the oud family on CSI by price per gram; four outcomes and their purchases; what a family rung saves on the next oud; and how to stock it.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — British Rose Fragrance Oil, Dark Vanilla Oud, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, Sacred Sandal Ember Fragrance Oil, Woody Oud Fragrance Oil. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the wick-purchase advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Payal Patel, Arshad Shaikh, Urvashi Patel, Sakshi Jain. The reviews from Ashwini, SUMAN BISHT are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 200 g fill and 8.0 cm inside diameter are labelled assumptions. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%; Woody Oud, White Royal Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud 6–10%; British Rose up to 10% in soy): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Composition effects are commonly described tendencies; flame-height and melt-pool figures are commonly cited rules of thumb. The family rule, 5% allowance, monthly volumes and 10-day lead time are editorial judgement and worked examples. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
